As we head into (hopefully) wetter weather, I am reminded that there is possibly no greater long-term issue facing our region than water and the State’s determination to send our water to Southern California. On October 20, 2017, Mike Dunbar wrote about this complicated issue in the Modesto Bee, and he did a great job explaining the players and the motives. Read about it here to stay informed: http://www.modbee.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/ mike-dunbar/article180099486.html

October was a busy month for our region, and November kicks off that time of year when businesses are looking toward the short sprint to the holidays and the end of the year, with their mind on wrapping up 2017 while planning for 2018.

A key appointment and several awards occurred last month. Congratulations to Paul Van Konynenburg for his appointment as a Commissioner to the California Transportation Commission (CTC). Paul is the only current Central Valley Commissioner of the CTC, and his appointment should have a game-changing effect on local transportation projects. The Modesto Chamber presented its Excellence in Education Award to Cindy Young, Director of Career Technical Education (CTE) for Stanislaus County of Education, at the Stanislaus Partners in Education’s Annual Ceremony. Congratulations also to Sam Bettencourt, retired CEO of Stanislaus Farm Supply, who received the 55th Annual “Good Egg” award for his lifelong activity in the local agribusiness community. Finally, looking to 2018, we are now accepting submissions for nominations for our annual awards. We would ask for you to contemplate who deserves to be nominated, and complete the form which you can find on our website, www.ModChamber.org. | P

COVER STORY SHOP LOCAL, BUY LOCAL
IS BACK! THE 5TH ANNUAL MOD SHOP returns to downtown Modesto on Nov. 25. The Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday marks Small Business Saturday. As a part of this movement, local Mod Shop organizers encourage you to join them downtown between 5 and 9 p.m. to shop at independent retailers, eat at a local restaurant, listen to some local music, and generally just have a great time.
COMMUNITY
Now in its fifth year, Mod Shop’s mission is to contribute to a vibrant, culturally-rich, connected community where people are supporting people in a variety of ways. One of Mod Shop’s producers, Kate Trompetter, shared, “From buying local and/ or handmade goods, to enjoying dinner at a local restaurant, tipping a local musician on a street corner of ice skating with your family, we hope people will be inspired to do it again the next weekend, and the one after that. This year, local vendors from the area will sell an assortment of one-of-a-kind items from clothing to accessories and artwork from area artists. At this annual event shoppers can find anything from handmade furniture, cosmetics, art, clothing, knitted items and more.
Downtown should come alive every night; however, on this night organizers hope more people than ever will spend the evening perusing the offerings of our vendors, while supporting local shops, restaurants and bars, the returning ice rink and more. Also, live music will be provided by several local musicians busking the streets, in addition to a stage hosted by Modesto View at the corner of outside Ralstons Goat. Returning this year will be Mini Mod Shop, located inside the Mistlin Gallery, which has opened the event to young crafters. New this year is the addition of Tresetti's Wine Shop as a host location. Mod Shop organizers welcome back our other host locations: Preservation Coffee and Tea, Concetta, Mira Bridal Couture, Deva Café, Mod Spot, Ralston’s Goat, and Peer Recovery Art Project. A raffle for items provided by participating vendors will be held inside the Modesto Chamber Office. Proceeds from this years raffle will support MoST (ModestoStanislaus Poetry Center). “This year, we are especially thankful to our returning host locations,” shared Trompetter. “We know staying open on this night, in most cases, means more hours, extra work, additional staff. But it also means more community, more fellowship, and a better Modesto. We are so thankful to all that continue to participate.” | P
MOD SHOP:
In addition to supporting local business, the goal of Mod Shop is to create a hip, inclusive and entertaining atmosphere and attract a variety of people to come together for the evening— young and old, families and friends.

Carolyn Huff Photography Studio and Gallery is hosting Charles Waldman this November. Charles Waldman began painting fulltime in 1999 after practicing Family Medicine in Sonora for 22 years. He was born in Oakland and had an early interest in art but didn’t start oil painting until 1987. The former physician is awed by the course of events since leaving medicine for art. During month-long trips to France, he will often come home with 50 plein air studies. He teaches two to three workshops per year. Carolyn Huff Photography is located at 1224 K St. in Modesto. Henrietta Sparkman will also have a display October - December. An artist reception is held the third Thursday of each month, 5-9 p.m., corresponding with the Modesto Art Walk. Together, the Koelsch family has six decades in developing, building and operating senior housing. The tradition began in 1958 when Emmett Koelsch and Alice Koelsch-Schultz founded the company based upon their goal of providing quality service in a warm and caring environment. The first family-owned property was a long-term care facility in Kelso, Washington. It was no exaggeration to call this home a “family operation” since the basement served as the family residence. Family and staff embraced the vision developed by Emmett and Alice, employing the simple philosophy, “Treat all people with the respect they deserve and the special attention they may need.” | P

LEARN LOCAL, LIVE LOCAL AND TEACH LOCAL
By Elizabeth Facanha, Community & Corporate Outreach Manager & Richard Carnes, MA Director Modesto Campus, Brandman University
We are excited about the numerous partnerships, and state and federal funding to support these efforts. “The goal is help fill critical full-time teacher and substitute teacher positions with passionate, highly competent, and technologically savvy teachers for our partner school districts,” said Dr. Christine Zeppos, Dean of the School of Education at Brandman University. “Due to the increase of teacher retirements, the increase in the number of K-12 students to teach, and the fact that statewide California has produced about 50 percent fewer teachers each year than we did 10 years ago, the state is facing a serious teacher shortage that will last for several years. There is no better time to enter the teaching profession,” continued Dr. Zeppos. According to the California Department of Education, school districts need to fill 21,500 teaching slots, but the state is issuing fewer than 15,000 new teaching credentials per year. California issued 14,810 teaching credentials in 2013-14, according to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. That number has been steadily declining since 2008-09. School districts and private schools are recruiting from outside the United States for people interested in careers in education.
The goal of this collaborative effort is to work with local K-12 school districts to identify students in high school who can achieve their AA or AS degree through local community colleges and continue on to complete their Bachelors of Art in Liberal Studies and step into a credentialing program for completion. Alumni students from community colleges can also come back and start the Liberal Studies program and complete quicker depending on the number of units they attained to graduate. Statistics have proven that students that begin and stay in programs together have a higher success rate and lower drop-off as opposed to entering independently. Greater financial opportunities are becoming available for students interested in the field of teaching through grants, partner scholarships, and loan forgiveness programs. The flexibility of choosing online classes verses on ground classes taught at night or on weekends may overcome some of the standard objections many working adults are faced with to start or complete their educational dream. The growing need for an educated and skilled labor force in many of our communities is directly tied to the quality of the education that comes out of the K-12 classroom. The need to fill this gap and allow students to learn local, live local and teach local is critical. Providing local students with a pathway for success will ensure the growth and leadership throughout the community. For more information on how local businesses and community members can help fill the gap in education, please contact Elizabeth Facanha at Brandman University, 209.550.4524 or efacanfa@brandman.edu. | P
EDUCATION
A critical shortage of teachers and substitute teachers is impacting communities across the state of California. Nonprofit Brandman University Modesto Campus is teaming up with county offices of education, school districts, businesses, and community colleges to assist in filling the gap that continues to impact the state of California and beyond. Businesses and local officials are concerned of the growing educational and skills gaps that are plaguing our state.

LEADERSHIP MODESTO RETREAT By Ryan Dziadoz, President of Takapa Media & LEMO Current Class Member A bus containing the 2017-2018 Leadership Modesto Class wound its way through mountainous terrain to Pacific Grove on Sept. 15. On the trip, the group had to complete a no-cook food serving exercise on the bus, which proved to be a challenge in planning and logistics. After dinner, the class bounded around the fire pit of the hotel and got to know each other with an exercise. Saturday was an all-intensive day of leadership workshops. First, everyone analyzed their personalized DISC assessments. People found out if they were a dominating, influencing, steady, or conscientious in their behavior. They then looked at how to deal with the positive and negative aspects of those personality types, and how to work with other people, who could have potentially clashing styles. Next, the team focused on discussing leaders they admired. The lists ran the gamut from historical figures, to current political giants, to local trendsetters. The group did a deep dive on those leaders’ inspiring values. This then lead to a discussion on the team’s personal leadership values. Where did those personal values stand? Where could they be made more honest and impactful? Finally, the team discussed how best to represent the community with their ideal leadership principles. On Sunday, the team received a brief introduction on meditation, learning how to be mindfully aware of their thoughts. Many found it hard to be focused in the brief time allotted. It will take further practice and skill for many to even begin to appreciate the benefits of mediation. Additionally, the serious analytical activities of the weekend were interspersed with structured and unstructured bonding activities which inspired lighthearted camaraderie. For instance, the group was split into teams that had to construct a floating object that had to survive a balcony drop out of a bag of rag-tag supplies.

Presently, the business is being run by the third generation of Gowans: Bruce Gowans and Terry Gowans, who were preceded by Richard Gowans and Declan Gowans. Their conjoined efforts have seen Gowans Printing Co. through its 98 years of business.
They also have a profound effect on the community. Gowans Printing has actively supported fallen officers for both the Police and Sheriff’s department by donating printing and graphic services. In addition, they are proud to contribute to PAL (Police Activities League), the Modesto Community Concert Association (MCCA), and the Boyett Petroleum “Make Dreams Real Golf Tournament.”
Gowans Printing Co. utilizes a technical expertise combined with a commitment to exceptional quality, services, and competitive pricing that makes Gowans Printing one of the premier printers in the Central Valley. When Gowans Printing accepts a job, no matter how big or small it is, they work on

MORE TO LIFE.
Surgery is one of the best decisions I ever made. I’m medication and pain free – and for the first time in years, I live more freely.
DIANE; SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS PATIENT
In the last decade, the number of adults now taking prescription drugs has increased nearly 10 percent – an increase correlating with the rise in obesity across the United States. Many obese adults are now taking more than five prescription drugs each month. When you’ve tried every weight loss tool in your kit, but the weight won’t budge, it’s time to try a new tool that may make the difference. Take our surgical weight loss assessment at ValleySurgicalWeightLoss.com to find out if you’re a candidate, or call (877) 946-3604.
Doctors Medical Center is now a Center of Excellence! County employees now have two local options for weight loss surgery. To find out more, contact DMC’s Nurse Navigator for Weight Loss Surgery, Aline Van at (209) 276-3847.
Now’s the time. Redefine yourself. Bariatric body mass criteria: this surgery is designed for those with a BMI equal to or greater than 40 or equal to or greater than 35 with serious co-morbidities. Weight loss surgery is considered safe, but like many types of surgery, it does have risks. Consult with your physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.
