A Message From The President & CEO HIGHLIGHTS By Trish Christensen

Welcome to March … our Annual Gala highlights edition. This month’s pages are rich with accolades, names, photos, stories of giving and accomplishments, and numerous highlights. It would be impossible to have shared in the evening’s festivities and not leave feeling proud and inspired by all the greatness that swirls through and around the wonderful people who make Modesto and our community all that it is. For the abundance of award stories included here, please note that we chose to save a few stories to sprinkle in over the next several months. Please watch for them in future editions. I spent the week following the Gala in Portland, Oregon, at the Annual W.A.C.E. (Western Association of Chamber Executives) conference. I met dozens of Chamber Executives. Many who are long standing veterans, and more than 130 who were attending for the first time. A trend of newness in the Chamber of Commerce world? Perhaps … I came away inspired and excited for the great possibilities that lay ahead of us and reassured that many of the plans and ideas I, my team, the board, and our numerous volunteers are building, are headed in the right direction. The following are some of the exciting experiences coming in the next few months:

COMMUNITY

We are a co-sponsor of the Cradle to Career Partnership Summit taking place on March 13th. This is an all-day forum which will bring together partners from philanthropy, education, the private sector, and government to learn about efforts to support children and young adults at critical gateways in their lives.

4

March 18th is when we will launch our Women in Business Support Network! We are looking forward to the power and positive energy that can be generated when we come together to encourage one another. Here we will strive to support and appreciate the unique scenarios and successes women of all ages in all sectors in business face day to day. You will find more information in the pages ahead. On March 26th, Mayor Brandvold will give his State of the City Address at the DoubleTree Hotel Ballroom. Tickets are selling, tables sponsors are being secured, and speech only seats are getting reserved. Please call our office or go to our website to register. This will once again be a luncheon, and space is limited. MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

Following the February presentation by Greater Stockton Chamber’s Program & Public Policy Director, Frank Ferral at our monthly Stanislaus Green Team meeting, we are now building the framework to launch our REACON Team outreach program. This focuses on REACON Assessments (Recycling, Energy Conservation, Air Pollution Mitigation, Water Conservation), and Green Sustainable Business Certifications, amongst other items. We are actively seeking partners for this effort. Please contact me to inquire and become a key participant. On April 9th we will host the 25th Annual Ag Aware Luncheon. This is a scholarship funder for our local high school FFA programs. The richness of scholarship rewards come directly from the number of sponsors and attendees that commit and attend. Please help keep the future of our region’s Ag programs thriving. Be a sponsor or buy a ticket. You can call the office or register through our website. May 12th will bring Mark Keppler, Executive Director of the Maddy Institute up from CSU Fresno for this year’s State of the Region address. Prof. Keppler is responsible for hosting both the Maddy Report (TV) and the Maddy Report – Valley Views Edition (radio & podcast) programs; publishing the Maddy Daily e-newsletter; coordinating the Institute’s Citizenship Academy and intern-scholar programs in Washington, D.C., Sacramento and political offices throughout the Central Valley. Prof. Keppler is a wealth of information and knowledge. Registration to sponsor and attend is open. Lastly, we are looking into ideas centered around connecting and supporting non-profits, as well as a separate connection group for young professionals. Watch for details in the near future, and please let me know if you are interested in being a part of the conceptualizing process for any of these engaging opportunities. With warm regards, Trish

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: 106TH ANNUAL GALA AND MEMBERS CHOICE AWARDS By: Felicia Lopez, Events Coordinator February 1, 2020 marked the 106th Annual Gala and Members Choice Awards presented by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. The community came out for a night of honoring and celebrating Chamber members from local businesses and non-profits, as well as community members who are making a positive impact for the public and people of Modesto and the Central Valley. The halls of the Gallo Center of the Arts were filled with glitz and glamor. The aroma of delicious food filled the air as patrons sampled a variety of amazing delicacies from some of the top local restaurants in Modesto. These amazing restaurants gave us a taste of elegance and included, Galletto Ristorante, Fiscalini Cheese Company, Green’s on Tenth, Tresetti’s World Café, St. Stan’s, Stonefire Pizza by MidiCi, Rodin Ranch Farmers Market, Papapolloni’s Mediterranean Bistro, Chefs Of New York, Nothing Bundt Cakes and DoubleTree by Hilton Modesto. Laughter could be heard throughout the lobby as people enjoyed the night’s festivities. The fun and excitement continued as attendees came together to partake in the night’s awards ceremony. Marian Kaanon graced us with her presence as Master of Ceremonies, Ambassador of the Year while the evening focused on the hard work and commitment the Chamber and community members have passionately shown this past year.

This year’s Gala attendees had the pleasure of meeting the newly appointed Modesto Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Trish Christensen. Trish took over the reins of the Chamber in December, but has spent nearly two years engaging with our members, businesses, community partners, committees, and board of directors. Trish brought a fresh and fun air to the evening.

Together we celebrated and honored not only our fantastic members but also our amazing board, and the many volunteers who work together to make the Modesto Chamber of Commerce the success that it is.

The next award of the evening to be presented was the NonProfit of the Year. Presenting the award was Chamber Board member Pat Gillum and last year’s winners from The Modesto Police Officers Association, Tony Arguelles and Doug Ridenour Jr.

Following this award was the Small Business of the Year award, presented by Chamber Board Member, DeSha McLeod and the winner of the 2019 Small Business of the Year, Get Fit Modesto, represented by owners Jonathan and Tera Crenshaw. The winners of the Small Business of the Year award went to Intrinsic Elements. Intrinsic Elements is a gift boutique with a metaphysical core. Owners Susie Fagundes and Michelle Van Artsdalen offer offsite services including meditation and speaking engagements. Their philosophy is that they are there to inspire people to recognize their greatness so that they may find and develop their own personal power and live consciously. The Modesto Chamber was one of the first chambers in the State of California to form a leadership program. Leadership Modesto is a 10-month program that begins with a weekend retreat focusing on leadership, self-reflection and team building. This year’s Presenters of the award were Cynthia Fenech, Stanislaus County Office of Education, and Leadership Modesto Steering Committee member, and last year’s winner, Kirstie Boyett with the State Theatre. Tony Jordan was the recipient of the 2018-19 Leadership Modesto Graduate of the Year Award. Tony was instrumental behind the class project, which was to build an outdoor adventure course at Foothill Horizons, also known as 6th grade camp. The course included a rockclimbing wall, a ropes course, and adventure platforms. Tony was committed to this project, because he’s seen firsthand the impact Foothill Horizons has not only on 6th graders and summer campers, but also on children who have lost loved ones and attend Camp Erin in an effort to heal.

Galletto Ristorante first fine dining venture began in 2001 located in Modesto, California - 1101 J Street. The name Galletto Ristorante is synonymous with the best of restaurant hospitality and ultimate in all aspects of the culinary arts in the Central Valley. Tom and Karyn Gallo, along with their Executive Chef Michael Goularte, have a passion for fresh and locally sourced cuisine. Fiscalini Cheese Company Fiscalini cheese making roots go all the way back to their ancestors in Switzerland who made a living producing cheese in the 1700’s. The aging process of their Signature Line is an art all on its own with the wheels being hand rotated, allowing for unique rich flavor profiles to develop. Guest of the Gala would testify to the rich creamy flavor of Fiscalini’s cheese, paired magnificently with an assortment of crackers, nuts, and fruit. Four generations later the Fiscalini Family continues to oversee the day to day operations of running the business and works to build and strengthen relationships in the community it all began in. “Welcome to Greens ... where we are passionate about gatherings”. We were grateful to have Greens on Tenth as yet another food host, where their passion for gatherings and good food shone through. They presented shrimp cocktails and a ceviche station that left you asking for more. Greens celebrates the bounty of the seasons, creating pure, delicious food using the fruits and vegetables grown on their own organic farm. Greens on Tenth creates colorful organic masterpieces and an environment for friends and family to gather and celebrate everything that makes our community great.

Since its grand opening in the Spring of 1994, Tresetti’s World Café has remained a family owned and operated restaurant nestled right in the heart of downtown Modesto. Using fresh and local ingredients to craft a wide variety of Cuisine from around the world, Tresetti’s truly has something for everyone! They put their skills on display at the Gala providing goat cheese and pesto in phyllo cups topped with sundried tomatoes. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a good glass of wine, a delicious meal, or a place to host your next special event, Tresetti’s can always make that happen. (www.tresetti.com) St. Stan’s For those of you not so familiar with St Stan’s here is a little history for you. The idea was conceived in the early 70’s, the name derived from many possible sources, our two favorites are Chief Estanislao, a “Rebellious Indian Warrior who defended his people” and St Stanislaw “a Rebellious Bishop who excommunicated a King”. St Stan’s was the 7th Micro Brewery established in the US and they are here to stay. They came with force bringing with them a variety of good eats for our guests to enjoy. Included in this is their specialty pizzas, garlic cheesy bread, and German Bavarian pretzels. St. Stan’s is located at 1028 11th Street in Modesto. You can find them Tuesday-Saturday enjoying good food, incredible beer, and growing the beautiful community of Modesto and the greater area. (www.ststans.com)

Stonefire Pizza by MidiCi

Nothing Bundt Cakes

Like the Italians, MidiCi believes a meal is about taste, flavors and colors, but it is also, and if not more, about the people, the conversations, the laughter. MidiCi’s goal is to bring friends together, and we thank them for helping us do just that.

By the end of the night our guests and award recipients were stuffed with all the fantastic food … But when you see a Nothing Bundt Cake, your stomach makes room. Nothing Bundt Cakes celebrate the very heart of hospitality, where all are welcome, and no one is a stranger. Economic Development Committee Report Focuses On Housing By John Beckman, CEO

Building Industry Association For San Joaquin & Stanislaus County As of February 2020, what is the state of housing in the state of California and Modesto? Following the great housing recession of the mid 2000’s housing construction has consistently been improving, and across the U.S. new unit production is nearing normal levels. However, the same is not true in California and even more so in Modesto. Based on population increases over the last 20 years California is 3.5 million homes short of where it should be and proportionally Modesto is just as far behind. The Governor and legislature recognize the problem, home builders want to help solve the problem but several roadblocks have made it politically impossible: environmental laws, local control and tax policy. California is a global leader in reducing green-house gases (GHG). To achieve the success it has, and to continue to be on the cutting edge of climate change the California legislature requires hew housing developments to produce far less GHG than existing housing. The cost burden of achieving this makes California housing the most expensive in the world. The cities of California

demand a great deal of local control to limit, reduce and even prohibit new housing. In order to build, home builders must incentivize local government to get permission to build. And, the tax policy of California places an incentive on cities to prioritize commercial and industrial buildings over residential ones. Over the last 12 months in Modesto there were 3,000 used homes sold with an average age of 41 years. Those homes sold at a median price of $201 per square foot. Due to the regulatory costs of producing a new housing unit today, the cost of new homes is only marginally related to the size of the home. A 1,700 square foot home in Modesto costs about $217 per square foot to produce but a 2,600 square foot home only costs about $195 per square foot to produce. The end result is new homes tend to be much larger and more costly than the median 41 year old home, and therefore not many are being produced. These big issues, and many smaller issues, have all combined into the perfect anti-housing storm. It’s taken 20 years to fall behind by 3.5 million units. Without a unified effort to build more homes the housing crisis will only get worse.

Transworld Business Advisors focus on three core concepts: business brokerage, franchise consulting and franchise development. In today's economy, there are more people looking to buy and sell businesses than ever before. When a company owner needs to sell their business, they can't just stick a for sale sign in the window. They need the assistance of a business broker to locate and vet potential buyers. On the other side, buyers rely on the broker to help facilitate the process of evaluating potential businesses and franchises for sale. A Transworld Business Advisor is the solution for both scenarios.

Baseball And Modesto: A Sure Hit The city of Modesto has been a baseball town since as early as 1914, beginning as the Modesto Reds, eventually becoming what is now known as the Modesto Nuts, High ‘A’ Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. As the Central Valley of California is primarily agricultural, priding themselves on producing an extraordinary amount of our country’s produce, along with 80% of the world’s almonds, 38% of the world’s walnuts, & 99% of the world’s pistachios, the name the “Nuts” was only fitting. The Nuts provide the community with family fun, community involvement, and America’s favorite past time. This year they celebrate 50 years of partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, working together to serve the greater Modesto area. Aside from baseball, they make it a priority to continually increase how they leave their mark on the community.

The Nuts have doubled their community appearances since 2017, work with over 43,479 students in the area through their reading program, host a skills camp for local all-stars who have their own big league dreams for baseball, and donate to over 200 different local charities. The Nuts recognize that providing a place for a day out at the ballpark is only worth investing in if they do their part to invest in this place that we all call home. As the 2020 season is quickly approaching, head on out to John Thurman Field to enjoy the fun! Go Nuts! Head Out to the Ballpark! Call: 209-572-4487 or go to modestonuts.com to snag your tickets today. The Modesto Minor League Baseball team celebrates 50 Years in business this March with the Chamber, we look forward to many more years celebrated!

ORIENT HOUSE SERVES UP CHINESE AND JAPANESE CUISINE Story and Photos By VIRGINIA STILL Orient House Chinese and Japanese Cuisine has been in Modesto since the 1980s, serving the community tasty food under the leadership of owner Allen Li. Involved in every aspect of the restaurant from busboy to chef, Li has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years. He has been at 805 W. Roseburg Ave., Modesto since 2014. Li is from South Korea and when he was young his parents moved them to Buenos Aires, Argentina and opened a restaurant business there. “We started a restaurant there,” stated Li. “It (Buenos Aires) is really pretty. The situation wasn’t too good so we decided to move to America in 1983.”

RELATIONSHIPS

They opened Orient House on Tully Road and Coldwell Avenue which was formerly a Sno White. In 1989 his father decided to open another location on McHenry next to the Wienerschnitzel. Although both locations did well for quite some time they decided to close the McHenry location in 2004 and focus on the Tully location.

22

He said, “We wanted to call it Orient House because we wanted two different types of cuisine, Chinese and Japanese. Nobody was doing Japanese at that time.” The Tully location burned down in 2013 that led them to look for a new location that is now in the shopping center on Roseburg Avenue. However Li and his wife Chong Yih did discuss the possibility of pursuing new business ventures or to continue the restaurant business. “I always had my eye on this shopping center,” explained Li. They approached me like five times before. They wanted an Asian cuisine here. There wasn’t one. I established this place six years ago in 2014. MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

I do everything. In this business you have to know everything. That is the only way. I train all my people.” They decided to continue in the restaurant business expressing that it can be very rewarding and the customers and friends that have become part of their family through the years are worth it. They have served many generations including parents with kids, then their kids as adults with their kids and the cycle continues. Their long time regulars know the Li’s children and now their grandchildren. Being part of a community is what keeps him going. The restaurant on Roseburg was not a restaurant originally; it was a photo studio. So they had to gut the whole thing and make new plans with new permits that included a new kitchen build. The Li’s made sure that they were there for every decision to make sure everything was done correctly and went smoothly. After the restaurant was completed they filled it up and decorated it to their liking.

Li’s wife has pursued other ventures and though retirement may also be looming on the horizon for Li himself, until then the extensive menu at the Orient house is sure to satisfy any palate, whether you are craving Chinese or Japanese food, guests can get both right there. “The restaurants today are all fusion,” added Li. “I don’t do that. We are old school. In this industry you have to keep up with what people like and change accordingly. So we might do a new plate. We have to freshen it up a little bit.”

Being part of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and involved in the community for different events as well as part of the Stanislaus Chinese Association is important to Li. Each year they participate in two food shows and iron chefs from Japan work with them. The Chinese New Year celebration had approximately 600 guests that they provided food for along with several other restaurants in February.

Pathways To Allied Health “Compassion and community.” Those are the words that come to mind for most students when describing their experience in any of the five Allied Health Programs at Modesto Junior College. There are five areas of study within Allied Health: Associate Degree Nursing, Advanced Placement Pathway for LVNs and Psych Techs, Medical Assisting, Nurse Assistant, and Respiratory Care. The Modesto Junior College Allied Health professions offer degree and certificate programs which are designed to prepare students for a career in specific health care occupations. The programs range from one semester to four academic years in length.

In 2015 Modesto Junior College (MJC) became the first California Community College to offer a bachelor’s degree program in Respiratory Care. The goal of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Respiratory Care is: To provide graduates of entry into respiratory care professional practice degree programs with additional knowledge, skills, and attributes in leadership, management, education, research, or advanced clinical practice both to meet their current professional goals and to prepare them for practice as advanced degree respiratory therapists. The MJC Bachelor’s Degree Program in Respiratory Care is delivered in an accelerated format. The required program courses (40 units), is offered in an 8-week online format. A new cohort begins the online program each fall. Applications are accepted October 1 through February 28 or until filled and classes are 100% online.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for Respiratory Care Practitioners is expected to grow by 19% by 2022, due in part to the growth in the middle-aged and elderly population that experience the deleterious impact of cardiopulmonary diseases. We are proud to announce Modesto Junior College celebrated its first graduated class in 2019 for the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Respiratory Care. LEADERSHIP MODESTO: Infrastructure And Economic Development Day By Meggan Clifford, Downtown Streets Team This February, the Leadership Modesto Class had the opportunity to take a dive in to the inner workings of our community. Both Melissa Williams with Modesto Irrigation District and Will Wong with the City of Modesto organized an action-packed day for us to learn from experts in Modesto. Throughout the day we were able to pull the curtains back and gain an understanding of what goes on behind the scenes to make our community thrive. Our adventure began at Modesto Irrigation District where we had an overview of how the community uses power and water, led by Will Wong and John Davids of Modesto Irrigation District. While learning from them I had the realization that I knew very little about MID, likely because I never have to call them to report my power is out! One of the highlights of the day was going on a tour of the control room at MID where we got to see how power usage is tracked, learn about their efficient monitoring programs, and so many other things that few people get the opportunity to witness. We took a walk over to the City of Modesto to hear from Bill Sandhu, Director of Public Works who reviewed the annual report and spoke about the goals of 2020: trees, traffic, and trash. Hearing these goals makes me excited to see what unfolds this year. With the start of a Caltrans program in our community, clearing trash from roadways while employing our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, I am thrilled to call Modesto home. Adam Barth, Transit Manager with City of Modesto joined us to share his knowledge and expertise. We learned so much about what goes in to helping us drive across town, from the timing of stop lights, what happens when a pedestrian crosses the street at a busy intersection, and how cameras are used to monitor the smooth flow of traffic.

SERVICE

At this point the day was already half over and our minds were buzzing with knowledge about our community. We stopped in to Skewers for lunch and the co nve rsati o n s were flowing about all things Modesto.

28

MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

We spoke about how to get involved in our community at new levels and stressed the importance of using our voice to make our community stronger. Next, we dove in to a presentation with Jaylen French, Director of Community and Economic Development with the City of Modesto who provided an overview of the Downtown Master Plan. Modesto is unique in many ways, including that we have a full square mile in our downtown area, so there is a lot to work with. We got to draw our ideas and share what would enhance our already vibrant community. We have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. As I reflect on the day I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to learn from our community leaders, share ideas, and explore new pathways to improve the place we call home. We excitedly celebrate Modesto’s 150 year anniversary this year, but I have to say, I think the best is yet to come.

Tony Jordan Earns Leadership Modesto Graduate Honors The Modesto Chamber was one of the first chambers in the State of California to form a leadership program. The 10-month program begins with a weekend retreat focusing on leadership, self-reflection and team building. Following the retreat, the class meets on a monthly basis to gain a better understanding of the community. Each day together, the Leadership Modesto class gets a backstage pass and an opportunity to explore different parts of this fantastic city. Each class also works together on a project designed to give back to the Modesto Community. The goals of Leadership Modesto are simple: identify, educate and motivate potential community leaders. The criteria for this award include:

2. Bringing positive energy and demonstrating leadership qualities. 3. Demonstrating promising leadership potential and a strong desire to make an impact. Every year one student is picked who has met all these requirements and beyond. This year’s recipient of the Leadership Modesto 2018-19 Leadership Modesto Graduate of the Year is Tony Jordan. Tony was the catalyst behind the class project, which was to build an outdoor adventure course at Foothill Horizons, also known as 6th grade camp. The class set a goal to raise $50,000 to help fund a rock-climbing wall, a ropes course, and adventure platforms. In the end, their class raised nearly $83,000, going well above their initial target.

Tony was committed to this project, because he’s seen firsthand the impact Foothill Horizons has not only on 6th graders and summer campers, but also on children who have lost loved ones and attend Camp Erin in an effort to heal. Each year, more than 9,000 children attend Foothill Horizons and these children will have the opportunity to enjoy the new Tom Changnon Adventure Course, thanks to Tony Jordan and his Leadership Modesto classmates. Tony was instrumental in working with the Stanislaus County Office of Education to coordinate the ribbon cutting of the adventure course and he presented plaques and certificates to the sponsors and donors. A plaque commemorating the hard work of the Leadership Modesto class and recognizing the major sponsors was also installed at the site. Tony was a true leader in this class project, inspiring those around him to dream big. Congratulations to Tony Jordan, the 2018-19 Leadership Modesto Graduate of the Year. MARCH 2020

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT Dr. Modi of Pinnacle Health Center I am elated to share my story of perseverance in spite of major obstacles in life, success, dedication, gratitude and extreme satisfaction with all of you on occasion of my silver Jubilee or my 25th year of my private practice in Internal Medicine. I am very excited and happy to complete my 25th Year in Medical Profession and serving the people of Modesto, since 1995. I came here to Modesto in 1989 after completing Medical School in India and then I completed my Post Graduation in Internal Medicine in 1994 in Stockton, CA. Qualifying and Passing Medical School in India was also a big challenge for me, since I had to work and support my education expenses for the entire medical school through scholarships and part time jobs, as my father was sick. It was also not free from hurdles for me to continue my Private Practice, since I had to balance my duty and commitments towards my patients and my extended family. Despite my overwhelming daily routine, I derived my enjoyment by seeing the smiling faces of my patients after they were being diagnosed and cured.

I also feel excited and proud when I see my both daughters following my trail. Beside my duty and commitments, I also did lots of social work and contributed to the society, which was duly recognized. I was bestowed with the title of Outstanding Woman of Stanislaus County in 2014. I also was honored as best 10 Moms of Modesto and visiting editor of Modesto Bee. Presently, I cherish all my past achievements and success with newly married husband who is also trying to follow my trail of serving people of Modesto in healthy living. A Dream Made Real Back in 2014, we came up with an idea that raised eyebrows. Having an ice rink here in California’s Central Valley, where we’re not exactly known for our sub-freezing temperatures. Part of our inspiration came from our own three daughters and a desire to provide a place where people of all ages in our community could have a safe, fun place to gather.

The other part came from a desire to support Downtown Modesto’s renaissance efforts and give people another great reason to come down. Our dream was to create a destination where everyone could come and have fun throughout the winter season – even if they weren’t skaters.

And when Modesto On Ice opened downtown at the corner of 11th & K streets, people were lined up. We can’t express the honor it has been to be a part of the community’s holiday memories. Over the last five seasons, over 160,000 skaters have glided around the rink, holding hands, pushing gliders, falling and laughing, taking selfies and skating to their favorite music. And rink spectators, numbering over 100,000+ have captured holiday memories in photographs, cheered, encouraged and laughed from the sidelines, warmed up under heaters and shared thousands of cups of our steaming loaded hot cocoa. MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG

A hallmark of our business is to strive for excellence in every aspect of our organization, and we have been blessed to continue to attain that with the help of our sponsors, our amazing staff and a wonderful community. Modesto Subaru stepped up as Title Sponsor in our Inaugural Season and has been an incredible sponsoring partner all five seasons, as have each of our sponsors. We have been very privileged to work with those we wholeheartedly admire. In 2017 we made the decision to move out of state to live closer to family. And with that move came the difficult decision in our fifth season to sell the rink. Fortunately, the perfect buyers have stepped up, the Halsey family, and we are thrilled that they will continue the Modesto On Ice tradition and provide a family-friendly, fun venue for the community to gather for seasons to come. With warmest thanks, Jerome & Andrea Murray
