A Message From The President & CEO REJOICE By Trish Christensen
M
arch is one of my most favorite months of the year. Whether it is a dreary rainy month, as I am truly hoping for us right now, or a mostly sunny month, things will come to life before us. I think that is what captivates me. We get to witness the rebirth of plants and flowers, the resurgence of bright cheery color, the sightings of baby animals popping up in the scenery that surrounds us. I find it impossible to not be thankful for the wonderful world we live in when it is rejoicing all around us. It also happens to be my birth month, so maybe I have an innate connection to it all.
COMMUNITY
The Chamber team and I are excitedly preparing for our upcoming Soiree, postponed from last month due to the rapid spread of covid at that time. The award winners who will be honored are not only inductees who earned their awards for their service in 2021, but we look forward to introducing in person all those who received awards for 2020 in very small, private, covid cautious presentations. Same can be said of milestone members. We will publicly be announcing and introducing them all during the event. We can’t wait to share our fresh new take on a long-standing tradition of the chamber, with all our attendees and sponsors.

The staff has collected some great content from members and community partners who will speak to the real estate and development environment of our area. We invite our members in all sectors to send in their stories and updates, themed monthly throughout the year. That is what makes the content in our business magazine so relevant. It primarily comes from those members who wish to share what is current and taking place right here every day within their lane of expertise and industry.

You will discover a few “newly” returning items in here as well. SCORE is bringing webinars back to the Modesto Chamber, these are open to all, member or not. Leadership Modesto is back in action with their 39th class. With that, you will find a summary and photos of each of their monthly “day experiences” shared here going forward. Each penned by a different classmate. You will also find an updated roster with headshots of our 2022 board of directors. The biggest point to note is our newly filled executive committee position of chairperson elect. For reference, we have labor law posters available in both English and Spanish. We continue to assist all exporters with any documentation services needed via our online portal with Swiftdox. Our conference room and meeting room can be reserved for an occasional meeting, or on a regular cadence as comparable to coworking space. These each have both member and non-member rates. We are working hard to support businesses county wide in gaining their California Green Business Network certification. Please let us know if you are interested in expanding your sustainability efforts and being recognized for doing so. Lastly, take time to peruse our website from time to time. Under each tab of programs, committees, ribbon cuttings, and events you will find the recordings of each occurrence we captured. They are such a great resource to look back on. Happy reading~ With warm regards, Trish

AMBASSADOR HIGHLIGHT Dandi Manuel with Boomers Modesto I have been a member of the Modesto community for 20 years. The last 9 years I have brought fun to families and friends of all ages as the Event Sales Specialist at Boomers Family Entertainment Center. I love seeing the eyes of children light up when they visit and say, “It’s my birthday!” It is just as enjoyable watching the kid come out of those that are never too old to have fun when they come for a work-related company picnic or team building event.
I look forward to continuing the partnership I have with the Chamber, while promoting businesses to become involved as it can be beneficial to everyone.
I get to see excited school kids when they are rewarded for good grades or attendance, and congratulate Graduates when they spend their night with us for an exclusive lockin. What could be better than that! In addition, I teach recreational and competitive baton twirling for the Ripon and Manteca Recreation Departments.
RELATIONSHIPS
During our recovery from the Covid shutdown, I missed the human connection I enjoyed so much. Being a member of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce I received emails with various information, but one day something in their weekly email caught my eye. It said they were looking for members to be a part of their Welcome Team and Ambassadors. In an attempt to regain some of the human connection I was missing, I inquired about the duties and expectations of the positions the Chamber was looking for. I decided this would be a great way for me to stay in touch with members of our community and regain some of the human connection I was missing.
12
At first communications were virtual as we were only able to hold online meetings due to regulations. Now, we are able to do in person Ribbon Cuttings as well as Chamber Mixers where we can once again be face to face and share with others information about our business and promote things to come in the future. Being an Ambassador for the Chamber has shown me how businesses can work together to be a better community while strengthening my personal relationship with other Chamber Members. MEMBER HIGHLIGHT Huff Construction
A Team Approach In a "traditional" construction process, a client will bring a project to a commercial contractor on paper and that information will be used to develop pricing and assemble the team to construct it. At Huff Construction, upwards of 85% of our projects are for repeat clients, and our team is trusted from the beginning to negotiate and develop the projects. The Huff Team is among the most experienced in the industry as many of our employees have worked together for over 20 years. Whether our clients choose to work with a traditional delivery or a design-build delivery method, the team approach that we lead ensures efficiency, time savings, and cost controls.
Consistency Across All We Do At Huff, we build and execute a variety of projects using a wide range of building materials. How we deliver our projects is customizable to meet the needs of our diverse customer base. Whether a project is large or small, there are often many similarities. Many projects require the same scope of work: concrete foundations, frames, electrical wiring, plumbing, and more. While the budget, time of construction, and the building materials may differ, a solid, systematic approach is always essential. At our core, we are a general contractor committed to building projects of outstanding quality and value no matter their size or complexity. Commitment to “The Huff Way” Building a foundation of taking ownership of your work and learning every aspect of the business through actually doing it is truly "The Huff Way.” Our team approaches every project as if they were building it for themselves. This level of commitment towards a project translates into success. Many of our employees have been a part of the Huff Team for many years which illustrates how committing to “The Huff Way” benefits our work environment. "Building Excellence" from Start to Finish At the end of the day, we want our clients to recognize that Huff Construction builds excellent projects in a way that can’t be offered by other contractors. Our goal is to have a high-quality finished building, but we also strive for more. We want the entire process from initial budgeting to turnover of keys to be excellent. We do our best to make sure that our project’s entire process is an experience unique to Huff Construction. For more information about our company, please visit www.huffcon. com MARCH 2022

Golden Valley Health Centers Celebrates 50 Years It has been said that one’s health is one’s greatest possession. At Golden Valley Health Centers, we have built a business spanning half a century around this very belief. In 1972, we began as a small Migrant Health Services program affiliated with Merced General Hospital. Since that time, we have expanded greatly to meet community needs across Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties, now serving nearly 150,000 patients each year through 45 clinical locations in the region. We have certainly grown. But we will never outgrow our mission. We are proud of our 50-year longevity and while that sounds like a long time in a rapidly changing world, Golden Valley Health Centers’ (GVHC) focus has not wavered since 1972. We were born out of a strong desire to increase access to healthcare in the lives of migrant workers, who toil to sustain our largely agricultural economy. In 1962 when then President John F. Kennedy signed the Migrant Health Act, federal funds were authorized to open community migrant health centers that would provide care for this critical farmworker population. It was later mandated that these centers make their services accessible to all who need them. We felt that way from the start, and never denied services to a patient in need. The ideology that everyone should have access to health care has been central to Golden Valley’s work over the past five decades and remains our guiding principle today. At GVHC we make quality healthcare accessible to all, regardless of their ability to pay. From our humble beginning, our mission has been to improve the health of our patients by providing quality, primary health care services to people in the communities we serve regardless of language, financial or cultural barriers. 50 years later, this still holds true.
As we see the need for services growing in our community, we plan to continue pacing that need with smart growth. We partner with local government, community based organizations, education and health plans to ensure top-notch services are provided to those who need us. At Golden Valley Health Centers, we like to say, “Your Health is Our Priority.” We hope the same is true for you. If you find that you need help living your healthiest life, visit us online at gvhc.org. We’ll be here to help…for at least another 50 years.
RELATIONSHIPS
Golden Valley Health Centers is a fully accredited FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) offering quality medical, dental, behavioral health, vision and other specialties at our health centers. Services also include urgent care, school-based health centers throughout the Central Valley and most recently, PACE (a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), which includes a day center offering a full array of quality of life and health services for seniors.

Burly's California Cuisine Finds A Welcome Home In West Modesto BY SABRA STAFFORD When caterer Kimberly Gaynor, Chef Mike Ortiz and business partner John Curtis made the decision to open a restaurant together, there was one aspect that Gaynor was absolutely set on. It has to be in West Modesto. "It wasn't going to be anywhere else," Gaynor said. "The real estate agent kept saying, 'Well, I have a place downtown,' and I'd say 'No, it has to be in West Modesto.' We're all from this side of town and still live on this side of town. And it was something this side of town needed." Burly's California Bistro opened at 1219 N. Carpenter Road, Suite 5 in March 2021 and gaynor's hunch about West Modesto has been proven correct. The restaurant and bar routinely draws in a crowd of diners and drinkers who come for the delicious meals and stay for the conversations with old and new friends. "West Modesto has been very supportive of us," Gaynor said. "One custimer said to me that they feel comfortable enought to come in after work milking the cows and sit down and order a beer and get food that they would at a white tablecloth place."
RELATIONSHIPS
The connection to West Modesto is reflected in a mural on one wall that highlights the region and some of the landmarks, like Modesto High School. The three business partners met while working at Mallards and remained friends and sometimes co-workers when opportunities took them to new places and ventures. They operated a successful catering business together for quite sometime, which is where the idea of the restaurant started perculating. "We really wanted a kitchen to cook out of for the catering business and then we thought we might as well attach a restaurant to it," Ortiz said. Initially, the plan was to open in early 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic 16
MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG
shuttered that goal. Instead, the fine-tuned their plans and practiced patience. On March 24, 2021, they opened their doors for the first time. It happened to be the first day restaurants in Stanislaus County could open for indoor dining. "Every week we were waiting to see if they would announce that restaurants could open up," Gaynor said. "We played Russian roulette and it worked out because they opened that day." The cuisine at Burly's California Bistro takes inspiration from the Central Valley, not to mention the actual products. "It's a cumulation of what the Valley has," Ortiz said. "It's steak and potatoes and pasta with Asian and Mexican influences." Some of their specialties include the cavatappi with vodka sauce, the whiskey peppercorn sirloin and the crispy calamari.
The cavatappi pasta is served with chicken or shrimp and is cooked in a "very spicy" vodka sauce with onions, garlic, mushrooms, red pepper flakes and cream. The whiskey peppercorn sirloin is topped with a whiskey cream sauce served alongside garlic whipped potatoes and local, seasonal vegetables. The crispy calamari is an appetizer that is served with a trio of sauces - ginger teriyaki, cilantro pesto and sriracha aioli. "People love them," Ortiz said. "They fly out of the kitchen."
Because they have this local focus, Ortiz will change the menu to reflect what items are in season. It's not just the menu that shines at Burly's California Bistro. The bar has plenty to offer as well. It's a fullstocked bar with 10 beers and five wines on tap and a menu os specialty cocktails like the Lavender Lemon Drop and Burly Water, which is a concoction of mango-infused vodka, lemonade and cranberry juice.
Burly's California Bistro is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays. For more information follow them on Facebook at Burly's California Cuisine, on Instagram @ burlys_california_bistro or call at (209)3129400.

LEMO ’22 Community Services Day By Samantha Christensen, E. & J. Gallo Winery Photographer: Damian Martinez, Stanislaus County Chief Executive Office
“Stanislaus County is a community of choice,” says Marian Kannon, self-described ‘maverick’ and Executive Director of the Stanislaus Community Foundation. On a day where the LEMO Class of 2022 would be schooled in how much need, service, and value lies within our city, a brief history of the Stanislaus C.F. was the perfect start.
LEMO lunch was held at Community Hospice, where Interim President & CEO John Renner shared that they are the longest standing & largest not-for-profit Hospice Center in the Valley. They own the beautiful Alexander Cohen House in Hughson, and proudly offer the Camp Erin program to children experiencing loss and grief. June 2022 is their next Camp!
Last year, the Foundation granted over $6 million, 90% of which remained in the County. Did you know that Modesto lies in a “media desert”? This means that the local goings-on, like city council meetings & decisions, are not reported back to the local community. The Foundation is trying to change that. They started in 2021 by sponsoring 3 reporters at the Modesto Bee and are eager to keep “filling in the gaps that no one is thinking about.”
Formerly Roller King, the Youth Navigation Center (YNC) is making outstanding use of a much-beloved childhood hotspot. As Program Director, Emily Webster showed us, the YNC is a compassionate response to youth homelessness in Modesto. As a temporary living space for youth aged 13-24, the Center features beautiful, secure dorm-style quarters and communal living spaces with shared responsibilities for residents.
The Family Justice Center was our first on-site visit. Lisa Mantarro Moore (Executive Director) shared that since 2009, they’ve helped members of the community escape unsafe situations by offering support in endless forms: legal counsel, clinical & mental health services, safe housing, and more. It is a blessing to the community that the Center managed to keep their doors open every day of the pandemic.
Their main struggle is having enough volunteers for the evening and overnight shifts, so please consider donating your time. You may have an excellent meal in it for you. As one resident was heard saying about their favorite YNC chef, “…I’m trying to lose weight, but whenever she cooks, I go back for seconds.”
SERVICE
Formerly Inter-Faith Ministries and now The Food Initiative of Greater Stanislaus (FIGS), team FIGS is bringing one of CEO Elizabeth White’s passion projects to life. A creative approach to closing Stanislaus’s food gap, this year FIGS Mobile Farm Stand will bring fresh produce weekly to 12 Modesto neighborhoods! With a focus toward closing the food-insecurity gap in Stanislaus, FIGS wants to make accessing healthy food easier for everyone. Please contact FIGS to request the Mobile Farm in your neighborhood!

A surprising chapter of the day was with Modesto Downtown Streets Team (DST); surprising because many of us are familiar with the DST folks in their orange hazard vests, but very few knew about the hardworking organization behind the vests. Meggan Clifford, Program Coordinator for DST, proudly shared that in under 3 years, DST has served 183 Modestans in their journey to rise out of homelessness. In 2021, they helped 52 people secure permanent housing and 51 secure permanent employment while maintaining essentially a 100% ongoing success rate! MODESTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I MODCHAMBER.ORG
What better way to end the day than with a sweet treat? At Enrich & Employ Ice Cream Co, Executive Director Bonnie Acree and husband Corey have a passion for eliminating obstacles to employment for those with special circumstances. A perfect example of their success is Bonnie’s sister Diane. Diane may live with Down Syndrome, but she is as visible as her fellow co-workers and doing her job with pride. As Bonnie noted, countless Modestans are looking for work after facing immense challenge, like addiction or disability. Many employers will only see the work-experience gap on their resume, so how do they get hired? Bonnie will hire them; happily, and she’ll help them gain important soft skills that transfer to other professional opportunities in the future. The Ice Cream Co.’s biggest challenge right now is lack of a permanent, visible location, so please make a plan to visit for a scoop and tell a friend! I strongly encourage you to connect with these amazing organizations on Facebook and Instagram to connect more with each, stay informed of their work, and celebrate in their successes.
