DELTA DAVID GIER has been the music director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) since 2004. During this time, SDSO has been lauded for its programming, specifically their side-by-side program of Bridging Cultures. This program has engaged Arab, Persian, Chinese, South Asian, Latinx and Sudanese and Somali refugee communities. Gier has also conducted a variety of orchestras across the United States, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, and as the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic. KEITARO HARADA began his tenure as Music & Artistic Director of Savannah Philharmonic and as Associate Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in the 2020-21 season. He also just completed his fourth season as Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops. Maintaining a growing presence across the globe, recent and upcoming guest conducting highlights include the symphony orchestras of Houston, NHK, Seattle, Hawaii, and more! In the opera canon, Harada has led productions at North Carolina Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and was the 2010 Seiji Ozawa Fellow at Tanglewood. DIRK MEYER currently is the Music Director of the Augusta Symphony, the Duluth Superior Symphony, and the Lyric Opera of the North. He has guest conducted orchestras including Toronto, Phoenix, and the Naples Philharmonic. Meyer brings classical music to new audiences through the creation of new concert experiences that range from multimedia to adventurous collaborations. Additionally, he has conducted in countries including South Africa, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Bulgaria. Assistantships have led him to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Germany), the Vienna State Opera (Austria) and the Teatro Real in Madrid (Spain). PAUL HAAS has served as Music Director of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas since 2010 and of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra which has grown substantially since the start of his tenure in 2017. Not only a conductor, Haas is an installation artist and composer as well. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Sympho, an organization devoted to the creation and performance of symphonic experiences in unusual venues. As a composer, over the last decade, fifteen commissions have come in from iconic venues including the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

Conductor Delta David Gier rings in the new year and kicks off our Music Director Search with the lively and colorful Espejos en la Arena by Mexican composer, Arturo Márquez featuring the exceptional Francisco Vila-Haas on cello. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a mysterious and triumphant masterpiece that explores the composer’s own life experiences.
The tradition which we celebrate each time we play music as an orchestra intends to enrich the lives of those of us participating (both performers and audience) so as to create community.

Written in honor of the dean of American orchestral music, Mr. Henry Fogel, Sidereus literally means “of the stars”. Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony is at once a work of staggering genius, a remarkable expression of the human condition, and one of my absolute favorite symphonies. No audience has ever experienced this music without feeling intensely the epic journey from the moment of absolute despair at the opening of the piece to the triumphant victory of the human spirit at the end of the last movement.
