|manifesto| A striking tapered moss covered crag. [CRAG] A steep rugged mass of rock projecting upward or outward, especially a cliff or vertical rock exposure. A plinth draped over the sloping topography Three buildings hinged on a mountain pass and light chamber Striking views of both nature and city The sense that user can scale the face of the mountain and Never lose sight of the changing external context. |didactic site| By gently balancing a generic plinth on the sloping topography, I propose a pragmatic landmark, both efficient and unique. Leaning the plinth towards the new medical center of UNMH mitigates its impact on the view from campus to city, while improving its own visibility. The gesture allows for an auditorium to be placed on the slope of the site. Through gentle openings in the slope, the entry floor facilities receive daylight. Going further than utilizing the roof as the “fifth façade”, in my proposal the central stair (mountain pass) becomes the sixth façade. Continuing the landscape underneath the building maintains the possibility to cross the site on foot, and creates a distinctive entrance from underneath the building. Modernist plinths are organized in layers, but tilting changes that hierarchy. I propose to place the lobby at the intersection so everybody can contribute to the dialogue, while functions with more need for privacy and task focus are placed at the extremities. The tilted entrance [student center] creates special on the roof plane, where I place a stepped floor volume that will house a café and study area. The space is draped and crowned with the rising topography. The site rises to wrap the building and anchor the building to site. The wall then gestures gently to the slope and converges with the green roof. The green roof offers cascading terraces with views to the main campus and duck pond, and undisturbed mountains in the other.

Bosque Del Apache \ Ornithology Center

The Ornithology Center encompasses the idea of a vessel to facilitate a TRANSITION between the built and the natural. Observing the image of the birds amongst the reeds, the building is a container for humans to feel the habitat of these birds. Creating a sensation of being in the reeds the pavilion is penetrated with ‘reeds’ of light through the circular fenestration and is comprised of two concrete planes suspended upon four steel columns. The building acts as a boat that protrudes out into the habitat of the birds uniting these two often estranged worlds.

analysis: the facility is designed with accessibility in mind. The building is designed as a continuation of the street scape moving by a series of ramps and concourses. Ample open areas are available for movement through and up the structure. There are no doors to have to manipulate through. Elevators are strategically placed to allow quicker access to different floors. one of the initial thoughts was to make the structure so a push cart vender could make his way up and down the structure using solely the ramps.

TRACKING THE EXCHANGE OF TECHNOLOGIES AND ECONOMIES

COMMUNITY A.B.C.D

EXCHANGE OF TECH/ECON TECHNOLOGICAL SPACE/TIME

"the representation of the contemporary city is no longer determined by a ceremonial opening of gates, by a ritual of processions and parades, Nor by a succesion of streets and avenues. from now on architecture must deal with the advent of a 'technological space-time'" -Paul virilio

31

DROMOLOGY

nucleus and the relational movement of space/time the city (fabric) : all cities today are instantaneously connected as part of vast networks, in which images, data and money flow freely. and if the advent of mass communication and information technology has undermined the idea of the city as the place of architectural permanence, the social value of memory itself has been eroded by the series of catastrophic political events that have marked the twentieth century data (electric pulse) : today the technologies of communication, information exchange, and war, along with the economies of multinational capitalism and global commodity exchange, have produced a condition in which the urban site is no longer simply geographic.

DATA

What is the modern city? barelas is an established very old neighborhood. studies have unearthed a compelling question about the neighborhood. at specific points barelas has been the physical site of certain industry expolsions. these events have caused barelas to experience an absense of growth relating to several of the elements that comprise a modern city. modern city: a place that no longer conforms to the conventions of traditional city planning and dynamics but aims to revolve on a central axis called 'technical space/time'

33

there exists a deficiency that causes the void of certain elements. the community fabric is perceived as deficient in money, a system of territory (use) and speed. these deficiencies gesticulate an action; an action that is founded on the principles that dictate the structure of the deficiencies.

MONEY

development in barelas has been influenced over the centuries by various forces - the early colonial agricultural lifestyle, the coming of the railroad in the 1880s, and the rise of the automobile in the 20th century. evidence suggests that barelas road was part of the route of the camino real de tierra adentro once a major route from mexico city to santa fe.
