Growth Cycle All the hair on our body has a growth cycle. Once it reaches a specific length, it sheds, falls out and repeats. There are three phases to the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen.
1. Anagen: (Active growth phase) Hair is still attached to the Dermal Papilla (blood supply). This phase can last 4-6 weeks.
2. Catagen: (Transitional phase) The eyelash stops growing and the follicle shrinks. This phase can last 2-3 weeks.
3. Telogen: (Resting phase) This phase can last over 100 days before the eyelashes falls out. Each lash is growing on its own cycle. They are not growing and shedding simultaneously. Typically, a full lash cycle can be anywhere from 21-90 days. Once a lash extension is applied it will grow and shed with the natural eyelash.

Eye Infections Eye infections occur when harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses that invade any part of the eyeball or surrounding area. Common eye infections:
1. Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids. Commonly occurs when tiny oil glands located near the eyelash base becomes clogged. Usually caused by poor hygiene. Scales and debris.
2. Conjunctivitis: Also known as pinkeye. Thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of eyelid. Caused by mold, spores, viral and bacterial infections. Can be highly contagious!
3. Stye or Hordeolums: Localized infection in the eyelid that causes a tender, red bump near the edge of the lid. Caused by bacteria or oil build up!

Sanitation & Sterilization It is extremely important to keep your hands, work area, and tools cleansed at all times. Cleanliness rules and regulations vary upon county and state. Please check with your local Health Department and Cosmetology State Board office for regulations required by the state. There are 4 aspects to a clean environment in the beauty industry we must keep in mind: Cleansing, Sanitation, Disinfection, and Sterilization. 1. CLEANSING: Hot water and soap. To rid of impurities. Listed as the first step in the decontamination process. 2. SANITATION: Barbicide. Conditions relating to public health in reducing bacteria to a safe level or environment. Does not destroy all bacteria! 3. DISINFECTION: Bleach, Alcohol. The process of cleaning, especially with a chemical, in order to destroy bacteria. 4. STERILIZATION: Boiling water, High Heat. To completely free something from bacteria or kill all living microorganisms.

Applying & Lash Process 1. Prep the Lashes: Every client should come in makeup free with clean lashes. But let’s be honest, life happens. In order to help prevent bacteria growth and aid in the retention of the lash extensions, prepping is major. Use a gentle oil free cleanser or Secret Lash Shampoo with distilled water and a brush. Dry the lashes and use a primer or saline solution to create a base for the adhesive to stick properly. Primer dehydrates and removes proteins from the hair, prepping for a longer lasting bond.
2. Apply Gel Pad and Tape: This step should not be rushed and must always be gentle. We don’t want to poke or irritate the client’s eye. Make sure the pad or tape isn’t touching the inside of the client’s eye, this can cause red and painful bruising. Gel pad should cover bottom lashes completely.
3. Apply Lashes: Once adhesive is placed in the glue ring and your bridge is mapped you may begin applying the extensions. Make sure you lay the extension no more than 1mm away from the eyelid. Isolate the lash, dip extension into the adhesive and place on the natural lash. Repeat steps until completed.
4. Check your work: Brush through lashes and check to see if any lashes are stuck together and not in correct position. If so, remove.
5. Remove gel pads and Tape: Brush extensions one last time after removal of tape and gel pad as this step can push lashes out of place.
6. Nano Mist & Fan: Spray the Nano Mister over their eyes high enough to get the end of the mist sprinkled onto the lashes. This step will help to cure the adhesive. Also misting helps with the fumes they may feel from the adhesive and feels great on the face too! Fan them for 2 minutes to end the service.
7. Take a Picture: Put your light on and take pictures of the end result of your work. No matter where you are in your lash career always take photos !!

Applying & Lash Process REMOVING LASHES: 1. Apply gel pad under eye 2. Client should keep eyes closed gentle and tight 3. With a small amount of remover and Micro-swabs apply remover to the base of the extensions 4. DO NOT TOUCH SKIN WITH REMOVER 5. Let remover sit for a few seconds then brush through lashes with Micro-swabs 6. Repeat until all lashes have been removed 7. Cleanse lashes with Secret Lash Shampoo or cleanser and rinse well with distilled water 8. Remove Pads THE FILL TECHNIQUE: 1. Cleanse and Prime lashes as done so on a new client after everything is set up and sanitized 2. Lashes must be at least 50 percent full in order to qualify for a “fill appointment” 3. Place gel pads and tape 4. Brush through lashes to find old out grown lash extensions 5. Peel these extensions away from the natural lash gently to remove 6. We don’t want to keep any old lashes that have out grown the 2 -week mark. These lashes can grow out and twist into the client’s eye before shedding completely. Also, old outgrown lash extensions can prevent your new set from appearing flawless if not removed 7. Once old lashes are peeled off and cleaned up, begin your bridge and groove 8. Isolate the lash, dip extension into adhesive, and apply lash extensions 9. Once completed Nano mist, fan and remove gel pads MODLASH Academy | Lash Seminar E-Book

The Artistry of Building Your Bridge Lash.art.ist /lash’ar,teest\ Noun
Being a Lash Artist does require some artistic nature. Every set you create is a custom masterpiece. Every client has a different set of eyes and it is our job to recognize that and figure what style would look best. Once you have decided the style of lashes you may then start the bridge technique to guide you through the process. An easy way to map your bridge would be to draw the lengths of extensions on the gel pads. This is a great process especially for new Lash Artists to help with gaining in their speed and groove. In order to begin the Bridge technique, place a lash on the corner of the eye, place a lash in the middle of the eye, and then an outer corner lash. Repeat process on the other eye to match. Whatever you do to one eye, you then do to the other eye right away to make sure the eyes match. While bridging the eyes with lashes pay attention to the map lengths drawn on the eye pad and make sure you are applying the correct sizes in the right areas. This technique is done so you end the lash session with the same number of lashes on both eyes and everything is even. You find your groove by repeating this process until lashes are full. Once you get your Bridge down, this is where your creativity begins. You can then mix different lengths, curls and diameters to create dimension and customized styles. This would come with more experience of course but always begin with your Bridge and get into your groove.

Aftercare You want to make sure you are educating every one of your clients on the proper care after getting their lashes done. Proper eyelash extension aftercare is imperative to your client’s retention and also your professional reputation. AFTERCARE BREAKDOWN Do not get Lashes wet for 24 hours/ avoid steam and sweat: Introducing water molecules to their eyelash extensions too soon could cause their lashes to shed from the natural lash prematurely. Our Nano misters at the end of the service does help with this avoid moisture rule, being that the mist helps to cure the adhesive. Although, to be on the safe side always give them a 24-hour time frame. Do not use oil-based makeup or products: This includes anything applied to the face. Facial cleansers, SPF, moisturizers and foundations are all included. These products easily spread to our lash follicles without us knowing even if we try to avoid the eye area. These are products we all use daily just make sure clients are mindful of their eye area. Do not perm, tint or use eyelash curler / Avoid pulling or rubbing: Basically, we want to leave the lashes alone once applied unless we are cleansing. Perming and curling would harm your naturals and also cause shedding and balding. Touching and rubbing lashes can sometimes happen subconscious or in our sleep. The oils in our hands and fingers can cause quick shedding that we don’t want. Face sleeping is something some cannot help. We want to identify this and allow clients to walk away with realistic retention expectations. They are the clients that will have lashes going in different directions or shedding on the corners. Investing in a silk/satin pillow case helps. Avoid strong heat: Ovens, BBQ’s, cigarettes, and candles. These are all situations we need to be conscious about with our lash extensions. Clients have come in with seared or singed lashes due to heat exposure. The heat can melt and damage the curl pattern of the extensions. Please be aware as this is also a hazard to the eye. Retention KEEP NOTED REGARDING RETENTION
•
Are the lash extensions applied to clean natural lashes?
•
What is the temperature in which you are applying the lashes in?
•
Adhesives work best in 40-60% humidity and 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
•
Are you working with old or new adhesive?
•
No longer than 5 weeks depending on size of the bottle. Date the Bottle.
•
Was enough adhesive used during the lash process?
•
Was the clients aftercare on point?
•
What were the healthy state of the client’s natural lashes to begin with? Strong? Brittle?
•
How was the placement of the extensions you applied?
•
Always make sure placement and isolation is perfect. Take all the time you need to ensure this.
•
Were there any allergic reactions or irritations?
•
Did the client have watery eyes?
•
Always make sure tape and gel pads fit properly to their eye to ensure comfort and less tearing during application.

Eyelash Curls/ Lenghts/ Diameters CURLS: Curls vary and choosing the best fit for the client’s eye shape, features and style is important. Most common worked with is C, CC, D. J-curl B-curl C-curl CC-curl D-curl L-curl
LENGTHS: Lengths vary from 8mm-17mm. Longer extensions, depending on the client’s lashes may cause premature shedding. Ideally the extension should be no more than 1-2mm longer than the natural lash. Although, in Vegas we have professions that require a more glamorous look. Always factor in the health of the lashes and make decisions at your own professional discretion. Most common lengths used are 8mm-12mm. (for a natural look)
DIAMETERS / THICKNESS: This tells us how thick or thin an extension is. They range from .03mm (not pictured) being the thinnest to .30mm being the thickest. Again, you want to use your professional opinion on the correct thickness to use for the natural lash. You wouldn’t put a .25mm in diameter on a small thin natural lash. Always keep health in mind 1st as a Lash Artist.

More on Curls J-CURL: This curl mimics the natural eyelash curl. It is the straightest curl with the slightest curve for a more natural appearance. Used to be more popular than it is now.
B-CURL: This is more used for the bottom lash line lashes. You can use this curl to blend with the C-curl to create a more textured look. Also used for the inner corner lashes at times depending on style and preference. It has slightly more curl than the J-curl.
C-CURL: One of the most common curls used. It is great for blending and texturing as well as giving the eye a wideeye effect without looking too heavy. This is the next step up from the B-curl in the curl pattern. Still would be considered a more “relaxed curl”.
CC-CURL: This curl is curlier than C-curl, But not quite as dramatic of a curl as the D-curl. It’s also a popular go to. Great for blending with D-curl to soften the dramatic D a bit.
D-CURL: This curl is all about the drama! It definitely opens up and lifts the eye with its dramatic curl pattern. The degree of the curl is the curliest of curls.
L-CURL: These work great for straight or downward lashes. The curl gives a natural looking lift for hooded eyes as well. The straight base allows a stronger, longer bond. MODLASH Academy | Lash Seminar E-Book
