ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Marisol Betancourt, Artistic Director and Dancer
Latin Ballet’s Artistic Director began her dance training at age three with her mentor Latin Ballet of Virginia’s founder and Director Emerita Ana Ines King. She became a member of the Junior Company at age six and performed the lead role of Little Maria in the Legend of the Poinsettia. At 13, Marisol began training with LBV’s Professional Company. She has performed numerous solo dance roles since 2012, when she was chosen to perform as principal dancer for LBV’s World Premiere of “El Pintor,” produced by Antonio Hidalgo and Ana Ines King. That same year, Style Weekly honored her as one of their annual “16 under 16.” Marisol has also performed with renowned Cuban Percussionist Melena, La Rumbera in the production of MELENA: A Cultural & Musical Journey into my Afro-Cuban Roots. Although trained in many diverse styles of dance, her fierce pride in her Cuban heritage is reflected in her passion for Orisha Dance, Salsa, Rumba and Flamenco.
Guided by Ms. Ana’s example, Marisol nurtures the next generation of dancers at her alma mater, the School of the Latin Ballet of Virginia. A natural teacher, she is a faculty member at both school locations and the summer day camp, and she serves as the Junior Company Director. Additionally Marisol has been working with children and families for The Youth Care Worker (YCW) program, helping them to develop positive rapport while serving as a role model to create a safe and caring environment. The program is responsible for providing direct care supervision for youth residing in Southwest Key Programs (SWK), fostering an environment that facilitates learning and behavioral management in a supportive manner.
As part of her duties as Artistic Director, Marisol is the répétiteur for the LBV’s company and school of dance, reproducing the original choreography of the company’s repertory produced by Ana Ines King and international collaborators. As such, Marisol maintains the legacy of LBV’s original productions. Marisol was named the Artistic Director of the Latin Ballet of Virginia in 2022.
Adelle Broom, Dancer
Adelle is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned a degree in African American History, with a minor concentration in Dance and Choreography.
During her time at VCU, Adelle studied under Ana Ines King (Founder of LBV) in Latin American dance studies classes at the Department of Dance and Choreography. She graduated a few years later and became an official dancer of the Latin Ballet Professional Company.
She grew up in a myriad of places including Idaho, Barbados and Virginia, giving her a uniquely diverse background. She has been teaching dance in the Richmond and Chesterfield areas for over 13 years. Adelle has worked with and performed with artists such as Coyote Run, Cathy Davalos, Antonio Hidalgo Paz, Francisco Mesa “El Nano”, and Frances Wessells. She also runs Mixed Karma Productions, a nationwide online music editing service. Between teaching, editing music and performing, she is also mom to Miles and Vivienne, her two children.
Since 2008, Adelle has been dedicated to our Company not only as a dancer, but also a faculty of our educational outreach program. Her expertise in African American history, dance, and choreography are just a few of the talents she brings to us. Adelle has made her life’s mission to exercise her passion, and share her life experiences through movement, music and dance.

DeShon strives to frame, construct, instruct, and inspire youths across the world that anything is possible through hard work and dedication.
Lydia Ross, Dancer
Lydia Ross, originally from Richmond, VA, discovered her love for dance early on through Richmond Ballet’s Mind in Motion program, which sparked a lifelong passion for movement and expression. She began her training at the School of Richmond Ballet (SRB), where she quickly advanced through the ranks, participating in the school’s prestigious trainee program for two years. During this time, she partnered with the VCU Dance program, expanding her knowledge of dance and earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her dual focus on dance and psychology has given her a unique perspective on the emotional and mental benefits of dance. After completing the trainee program, Lydia pursued a professional dance career with Starr Foster Dance Company and has performed with various companies. She continues to dance with Conflux Dance Theater, where she has had the opportunity to refine her technique and performance skills. Her most memorable performances, which span across different stages and companies, include Swan Lake, Napoli, Angelica Burgos’s Tensegrity, and Ma Cong’s C’est pas d’Lamour. These roles have been significant in her growth as an artist, allowing her to explore a range of emotions and storytelling techniques through dance.
Lydia is also deeply committed to education and community service. As a former Southampton Tiger, she worked as the Student Intervention Liaison at Southampton, where she passionately supported children from different backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and personal growth. Lydia is excited to join the Latin Ballet of Virginia as a new faculty and company member, where she looks forward to contributing her talents and passion to the culturally rich environment of LBV and inspiring others through dance.

Markell is also passionate about freestyle dance and continues to explore and refine his skills across these varied forms.
Melissa Martinez, Dancer
The beats of conga and steel drums were a heavy influence on Melissa Martinez’ upbringing. Her love of dance and music was no surprise since her mother is from Trinidad & Tobago and her father from Puerto Rico. Two vibrant cultures combined created the foundation of Melissa’s love of art and dance.
Melissa started dancing at Regency Dance Academy in Richmond and progressed to classical ballet, training at The Richmond Ballet. A graduate of Henrico County Center For the Arts, Melissa trained under influential RVA artists and notable companies, such as NC State University’s Tara Mullins, Starr Foster of Starr Foster Dance, Ezibu Muntu Dance Company, and Founder, Ana Ines King (LBV). While attending Henrico High School, Melissa became Captain for the newly formed Henrico HS Marching Warriors Auxiliary Dance Team. She would also dance and cheer for the former minor league arena football team, Richmond Speed. After graduating from Henrico County Center for the Arts, Melissa assisted in several outreach programs with Latin Ballet.
In the last 17 years, Melissa’s passion for educating youth in the community
has grown since working and teaching in RVA, including Henrico County and Richmond City Public Schools, private pre-schools, and local dance studios. She has been a faculty member of the after school and outreach program, and a professional dancer at the Latin Ballet of Virginia since 2008. Melissa’s motivation and mission is to share her love of dance through educating children and families in the community. Melissa is assistant to the Artistic Director of LBV and aids in the rehearsing of the existing repertoire and collaborating with Junior Company direction.
