It’s a time of great opportunity and reconnection at the Modlin Center for the Arts. My name is Paul Brohan, and I am delighted to join the University of Richmond and the Richmond community as the new executive director of the Modlin Center for the Arts. I am equally delighted to share with you our exciting slate of performances for the next several months. “Pivot” and “change” have become watchwords over the last two years, haven’t they? Everything about our day-to-day lives has been in flux for a long time. That has certainly been true for universities, artists, audiences, and performing arts venues like the Modlin Center. Times requiring us to pivot and embrace change also represent moments of great opportunity. At the Modlin Center for the Arts, we are fully committed to seize this moment of opportunity to serve and contribute to the rich cultural landscape of our community and campus in ways both familiar and innovative. We are committed to providing meaningful experiences, forging deep connections, and offering transformative opportunities to the University of Richmond campus and the wider Richmond region. Those experiences may be centered on the Modlin Center stages, in robust residency activities, and via digital presentations. Our upcoming programs demonstrate these commitments. Whether you are a longtime attendee or a new member of our diverse and engaged community, we invite you to join us for exceptional shared experiences. I can’t wait to see you at the Modlin Center for the Arts.

A performance by either of these masterful musicians would be a moment to be remembered. A concert bringing together their talents and artistry will be a moment to be treasured. Of Ohlsson, the Seattle Times exclaims, “What a sound!...There are no histrionics, no flailing or thumping or grand-standing, just an incredible technique with razor-sharp accuracy, producing a sound so lush it almost glistens,” while of Gerstein, The Observer raves, “This is the kind of serious, intelligent,

Three powerhouse vocalists of today revive the liberated spirits and pioneering vocalizations of four divas of the blues from the 1920s: Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Ethel Waters. As the singers delve deep into the music of the Empress, Queen, and Mother of the Blues as well as that of stage and screen icon Waters, pianist Mark Shane leads a seven-piece band. There’s just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Evocatively woven with music and imagery, the presentation is drawn from live interviews, written stories, and improvisation. An eclectic ensemble re-enacts the courageous personal narratives of Richmonders’ encounters with fear, sadness, confusion, and anger against a tapestry of resilience, hope and re-awakenings. Often haunting, sometimes humorous, always compelling Standing Together, Six Feet Apart celebrates the indomitable strength of the human spirit and its ability to thrive in the face of grave adversity. NEUMANN LECTURE ON MUSIC Storyteller of the Shadowland: Marginalized Identity at the Roots of ‘Americana’ Dr. Robynn Stilwell, speaker Monday, April 4, 2022 | 7:30 PM Ukrop Auditorium, Robins School of Business
Robynn Stilwell (Georgetown University) is a musicologist whose research centers on the meaning of music as an expression, or impression, of movement through space and narrative. Her lecture will focus on songwriter Robbie Robertson. Canadian by nationality, but half-Mohawk and half-Ashkenazy Jewish by ethnicity, Robertson was the primary songwriter of the seminal roots group, The Band. For his first album (1987) Robertson turned to his Indigenous roots, and conceived a parallel American history, created by songs, dances, folk tales, and legends. Stilwell will discuss how Robbie Robertson's life and work uniquely sit at the center of debates about authenticity and identity, and between insider authority and outsider perspective.

The exhibition features 15 sculptural artworks by artist Nancy Judd, that address topics including the ecological and social cost of our clothing, the food we consume, our connection to the land and sea, waste reduction, product packaging and waste, and the importance of bees in our world. Judd loves the challenge of making castoff fashion elegant and inspiring people to look differently at waste and human impacts on our planet. Her utilization of fashion beckons the viewer to think about their own personal impact on our world and how people can make small changes to improve our environment.
This exhibition focuses on the cumulative work of the twenty students that have been awarded the Harnett Fellowship since 2001. Each piece has been selected by a Fellow to represent the exhibition they curated. The seemingly disparate pieces coalesce to create an intricate narrative that highlights the experience of the past fellows. Two Decades adds meaning to the pieces displayed and integrates the identity of each Harnett Fellow and their personal connection to the art work.
