I’m so excited to share the stories of such talented trailblazers in this issue. I believe these creatives are crossing boundaries and revitalizing the industry with their work. They’re rejecting the typical approach to fashion and making waves with their unique and innovative ideas. And I hope that something you discover in this issue inspires you to do the same. ctress/singer, Olivia Holt grew up in a small town outside of Memphis, Tennessee. Southaven, which is technically located in Mississippi, is a tight-knit community where “everyone knows everyone,” according to Holt. Her new home of LA, however, is notoriously known for being very different. “It was definitely a challenge, for me and my whole family,” Olivia says of her transition to life in LA. “We had to adjust to a whole new environment and lifestyle, but we just dove right into it all. Some days were a lot harder than others—I still sometimes get homesick—but I love the life I’ve made for myself in LA, too.” Despite relocating across the country, Holt still embraces her roots, citing Memphis BBQ as her favorite Southern cuisine. When she’s unable to indulge, due to her limited meat intake,

she turns to “any fried junk food” for her guilty pleasure. Holt’s authentic, contagious energy has undoubtedly translated into her work. Before she took on the emotionally complex role of Marvel’s Tandy Bowen, she most notably played Kim in the Disney XD series, Kickin’ It. More recently, she starred opposite Ross Lynch in the teen comedy film, Status Update, featuring a magical application that brings social media statuses to reality. And, speaking of status updates, Holt expressed to us that she has always had “mixed feelings” about social media. While she acknowledges that “there are an equal amount of pros and cons” to social media’s effects on people, Holt specifically notes the benefits that social media provides, such as educating people on what is occurring around the world and its ability to “easily connect [us] with each other and have a whole different community of family and friends through our device.”

Welcome to the marvelous world of Olivia Holt.The name probably rings a bell because the young actress currently stars as Marvel’s Tandy Bowen (aka Dagger) in Freeform’s hit series, Cloak & Dagger.The compelling comic book adaptation follows two superpowered teenagers from vastly different backgrounds, whose destinies intertwine as they discover a mysterious connection between their abilities. While Holt is part of the sprawling Marvel world, we think that the 21-year-old is a marvel herself—evolving from small-town Southern girl to multi-talented Hollywood starlet, while embracing every moment along the way!

The connectivity that technology provides certainly comes in handy for Olivia, with many of her friends being scattered around the US. When it comes to managing her work/life balance, Holt says, “[it’s] a big challenge in its own, for sure.” “But my friends and I make it work,” she explains. “I’m not the only busy one in my circle, my friends are all busy doing really amazing things, so we all find and make the time to see each other whenever we can.” Holt is also mindful of the people she surrounds herself with. When it comes to surviving in the entertainment business, Olivia has learned the importance of protecting her energy and space. “This industry is filled with so much competition,” she divulges. “Always trust your instincts when letting people into your circle, because you never know what [their] agendas are.” And just in case you’re wondering what it takes to be in Olivia’s inner circle— “loyalty, respect, support, and a kickass sense of humor” are the characteristics she values most. Given the nature of her work, Holt relies on those closest to her to keep her grounded. But these days, she’s constantly on the go. Currently battling feelings of jet lag, Olivia reveals to us that six days is the longest she’s been home since September. “But I’m fine,” she says, laughing. Holt is always up for the challenge. There’s even a certain tenacity in the way she approaches her roles. Unfamiliar with the Cloak & Dagger comics when she initially auditioned for Tandy Bowen, Holt immediately dove into them when she booked the part. Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, which airs on the Freeform network, has attracted a reputation for digging deep into real sociological and, at times, political topics. When discussing Season 2 of the series, Holt emphasizes that she is “very grateful to be part of a show with such great storytelling and a message behind each episode and character.” Her recollection of securing the role was that it all felt “very surreal.” Of course, this seems like a fitting way to chronicle any Marvel-related masterpiece. When we want to dig deeper into the details of her role on the show, Olivia doesn’t hold back. Citing it as her most challenging performance to date, Holt reveals that Tandy Bowen is a complex, multidimensional character to play. “Tandy has a lot of layers,” she says. “She’s not just one note, which I love about her, but she also has a very cynical side, which is sometimes a very challenging headspace to be in, for me as an individual. But Tandy beats to the rhythm of her own drum and there is something so unique about that.

And I think that’s what helps me push through all of the cynicism.” Given Holt’s life mantra of not taking life too seriously, it is understandable that she would feel challenged by Tandy’s personality, at times. We ask how she keeps her spirits high, and she offers these wise words: “Have fun with what [you] do or end up doing. Be present and embrace every moment. It matters in the long run, and you’ll be happy you did.” For now, the 21-year-old’s priority is acting, but she has always simultaneously had another true love—music. Since releasing her first single in 2017, Holt tells us she wants to continue writing and recording “as much as possible.” “I love it,” she says. “I love music, man. The effect it has on me is like no other. And I just want to soak up as much knowledge as I can and keep evolving as an artist.” We intend to watch—or rather listen to—this space for what musical melody Holt graces with us next. If you have not seen Cloak & Dagger, be sure to check it out. But for now, we leave you with a few of Olivia Holt’s current marvels: Santa Fe is where Holt would teleport right now if she could because it’s one of her “favorite places in the world.” Even though she only spent a day and a half there, she described it as “magical.” Painting and Netflix is what you will find Holt doing when she is not acting or singing. She loves to paint, despite feeling like she is “not very good at it.” Sex Education is the last thing Holt watched on Netflix and she gives it a 10/10 rating because it is “witty and charming.” Maren Morris’ new album Girl is what Holt is currently listening to. Olivia’s Perfect Day consists of waking up, working on her dream project, going out for drinks with friends, and finally heading home to eat vegan cookie dough in bed. Simplicity is Holt’s token go-to look, consisting of a “white tee, pair of denim jeans, and some sneakers.” Austin, Texas is what she calls a “rad city” and she loved everything about it—the culture, food, and people, and she plans on going back (hopefully for SXSW)! “It’s always a good time!” Follow Olivia on Instagram & Twitter @Olivia_Holt!

Safe to say, that dream came true, with Pernas having portrayed a number of fierce women throughout her burgeoning career.You may know her as Hannah Archer from military-drama The Brave, but this summer, Sofia is gearing up for a new adventure in CBS’s action-packed series, Blood & Treasure. Pernas stars as Lexi, a cunning, kick-ass art thief, who teams up with an antiques expert named Danny (Matt Barr) to chase a ruthless terrorist around the globe. interview by shannon phelps

Shannon: It’s so cool that you speak four languages! Did you learn most of them while you were younger, or did you pick some up as an adult? Sofia: I was so incredibly fortunate to have been raised by a mother and father who were both multilingual and insisted on hammering that into my thick skull as a kid, so most of them I picked up as a child. My German I picked up later,

although it isn’t so great these days—definitely gotta knock some rust off that—but when I was in my early twenties, I enrolled myself into a lingual institute for a couple years to learn it because I absolutely love the language. Most of that passion came from listening to Rammstein—LOVE their music. Shannon: When did you realize you wanted to be an actress? Sofia: I knew I wanted to become an actress quite early on. My father used to force me to watch black & white movies with him because he’s addicted to TCM (Turner Classic Movies), and after a while I became a willing participant and totally fell in love with film noir—particularly Bette Davis. Growing up, wanting to be an actress became a serious dream when I discovered Xena: Warrior Princess. I can’t even begin to explain to you the obsession with that character, but it was real. Shannon: Who/ what are your greatest inspirations, and why?

hannon: Tell us a little about your life, growing up. Sofia: I feel like I’m a total farm girl, since going back to Morocco every summer was the highlight of every year, growing up. My mother’s family has a big ol’ farm down in Fes, where I was born; we have cows, horses (yes, even ponies)—basically all this land to play in with my four other siblings. But at the same time, we lived in Orange County, so I’m also a 100% Cali girl. My siblings and I ran around wild.

Sofia: That one’s a toughie because my mom and dad would be at the top of that list; but to keep this from being novel length, I’ll say Xena the Warrior Princess. When I was growing up, females in TV were a far cry from what they are today, and actress Lucy Lawless completely redefined what that meant for me. Xena was fierce, passionate, independent (as all hell), and exactly what I wanted to be able to be lucky enough to represent in film & TV. I kid you not: I learned how to do her battle cry, I was that obsessed. Shannon: Tell us a little about your new show, Blood & Treasure. What can viewers expect? Sofia: To me, Blood & Treasure affords audiences that unique choice on their ‘watch list’ that is a whole a lot of fun, good ride, action-packed, dramatic, but always feel-good. I think in the current entertainment climate where viewers are so overwhelmed by content, this show stands out because it’s got that National Treasure, Indiana Jones vibe – it’s for anyone looking for a good time and a trip across the globe! Shannon: You’re giving major Lara Croft/Tomb Raider vibes in the show promo we’ve seen so far! What can you tell us about your character, Lexi? She seems like a total badass! Sofia: Oh, she is. Tomb Raider vibes for sure, especially since I have a British accent on the show! Lexi is a lot like I described Xena: fiercely loyal, passionate and indomitable. She’s an art thief (she really just steals anything she likes) who has a bit of a checkered past with Danny and still harbors feelings for him. She has a hard shell but, to me, only clings to it because she’s so very afraid of getting hurt; tragedy has followed her since she was a child. She kicks ass and never likes to

just walk through the front door—she prefers to crash right through it. Shannon: You and your Blood & Treasure co-star, Matt Barr are actually a couple! What was it like working with him? Sofia: Yes, we are! Matt is a dream partner in every way. He works tirelessly, is so passionate about what he does and always, always, has the greatest attitude on set. It never feels like work when the dynamic on the job is so positive—he is also this great sounding board for creative ideas and efforts, and we balanced each other out, even on our most stressful work days. The chemistry part was, well, you know. A slam dunk. You could say we’re both really skilled at kissing each other… Shannon: What was the casting process like for you? Is it true that they’d been eying you for this role for quite a while. Sofia: The process was so stressful, mainly because there were so many bridges to cross. At the time, I was contractually obligated to NBC’s The Brave, and even though I knew I had booked Blood & Treasure, I had to still wait and see if NBC would either choose to renew or cancel the show. When the news came that Brave was canceled, it was so bittersweet because even though it meant I was now free to do B&T, I had to say goodbye to my Brave family and a farewell to Hannah, my character on the show, who I came to love so dearly. Shannon: You previously starred as Hannah Archer on NBC’s The Brave. Has your experience on that show come in handy while preparing for this role?

Shannon: You seem to take on a lot of action-packed material! What’s the most challenging action sequence you’ve ever filmed? Sofia: Ha, I live for that stuff. As you might surmise, I love to challenge myself. I do all my own stunts, unless the producers tell me I’ve officially lost my mind and the stunt double has to do the sequence (which happens plenty). I think, to date, one of the most challenging things I’ve filmed was a big showdown fight I have at the end of the season—I can’t even tell you how many beats were in it, I lost count. I had about two hours to rehearse it and we were filming a few days later; I think I had about 8 million bruises by the time the night was over. Shannon: We’re sure they teach some pretty amazing skills in action training, but what’s the coolest trick you’ve learned, so far? Sofia: I’ve still got so much to learn and I think that’s why I particularly love these types of roles, but so far, jumping over fences one-handed and sliding off hoods of cars in the coolest and smoothest way possible. I know that sounds terribly underwhelming, but you’d be surprised by how hard it is to fly over the hood of a car with a gun in one hand while making it seem as effortless as tying your shoes. Shannon: How do you manage to stay active off set? Sofia: My dog keeps me active (she’s a malamute and very energetic) so I’m always taking her out for jogs and long walks. I also played tennis in high school, so I like to play with my friends at least once a week and keep that up. I try to stay away from cardio aside from that, since I burn a lot very quickly; I lift heavy at the gym and squat, squat, squat. Shannon: What’s your favorite thing about being an actress? Sofia: The storytelling aspect of acting is what is most addicting about the craft to me. Ever since I was a child, I loved listening to the ghost stories my sister would tell me, which I would then tell my brother and act out. As an actress, I now have that unique responsibility to adequately portray a character in one of those stories and do my part to help the viewer get lost—even for an evanescent moment—in that story. Shannon: What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from the industry, thus far?

Sofia: Be bold. Trust your choices and run with them, because the camera will catch that moment you balk. Don’t be afraid to constantly challenge your own boundaries, and when you’ve reached what you think is your limit, stretch those boundaries some more. There is no ceiling! Shannon: Who are some actors/ directors you’d like to work with in the future? Sofia: I think I’d roll over and die if I ever got to share the screen with Cate Blanchett. She’s one of those rare actors who transforms with every role and it’s an acting master class watching her command a scene. As for directors, Guillermo Del Toro and Quentin Tarantino have always been at the top of my list—I love their passion and unique visions for telling stories. Shannon: What’s your favorite city you’ve ever visited, and why? Sofia: Boracay Island in the Philippines is one of those places where, if you get the chance to go, you look around and think you’ve died and gone to heaven. It’s that beautiful. I shot a movie in the Philippines and took the opportunity to fly to Boracay when it ended, and it was a transcendent experience. The water was this brilliant aquamarine and the white sand that felt like a fine powder under your feet stretched for miles; couple that with the reputation Filipinos have as being some of the kindest people around—I never wanted to leave. Shannon: What are some places you’d love to visit in the future? Sofia: I’d love to visit Cuba; it’s where my father was born and I’ve always wanted to see it. I’ve also never been to Mexico (I know, embarrassing) but I think I’m crossing that off my list very, very soon! Shannon: What’s your favorite thing to cook? Sofia: Absolutely! We all got to train with our instructor, former Navy Seal, Mikal Vega. It was quite a surreal experience doing shooting drills (sometimes with obstacles) under his supervision. He hammered gun safety and proper firearm handling into our heads—one misstep in that department and we were beating a fat tire with a weighted sledgehammer. I shoot quite a few guns in this show as well, so it felt so easy getting back on that wagon and dusting the rust off. It’s amazing what that does to your confidence on screen.

Just to name a few, her dreams include attending culinary school and working with “cinematic genius,” Quentin Tarantino. Jackie gave us the inside scoop about her style, the new show, and what it’s like working with Netflix. interview by Sandy Aziz

Sandy: We heard you like to bake and would love to go to culinary school. What is your favorite sweet to bake and why? Jackie: I love to bake cakes! Oddly enough, I never actually eat it (I’m more of a frosting girl anyway!) Cakes are a lot of fun to decorate, so it brings out the creative side in me! Sandy: Which five words do you think your friends would use to describe you if we asked them? Jackie: Five words I think my friends would use to describe me: down-to-earth, honest, caring, sassy and hopefully funny! Sandy: What was the last thing you did before this interview?

Jackie: I actually just got back from the Santa Barbara Zoo! My boyfriend and I fed the giraffes, they were so cute! I definitely recommend going! Sandy: On the same topic, what is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t acting? Jackie: When I’m not working, sleep is my best friend. But I usually have a workout in the morning and then I get to spend the rest of the day relaxing with my friends. Sandy: What is a pet-peeve of yours and why? Jackie: Chewing loud. I don’t know when it started, but I’ll notice anyone chewing or smacking their food from miles away! My family always jokes and will come eat something super crunchy in my ear because they know I hate it. Sandy: If you had to define your style, how would you define it? Jackie: My style changes regularly, but I do try to get inspiration from the 90s. I think that the 90s had a unique take on everyday clothes and weren’t afraid to be “too much.” I like simple outfits with a crazy jacket or a crazy shoe. Sandy: What are you looking forward to? Jackie: Aside from Malibu Rescue, I’m looking forward to graduating high school this year and starting community college! I’ve never really been able to be a “normal student” so being able

andy: Tell us about yourself and where you grew up. Jackie: Hey! I’m Jackie Jacobson, I’m 17 and I’m a first-generation American! Both of my parents are from Russia and Russian was actually my first language. I’m the youngest of two brothers who played hockey, so I basically grew up in a hockey rink. My brothers’ teammates have become my other brothers. I’m from the Valley, in a really tight-knit community. Everyone knows everyone and I’ve been in school with the same kids since preschool; which could be good or bad.

to say I’m going to college is pretty cool! Sandy: Where would you like to travel next and why? Jackie: I’ve been dying to go to France and Greece. Europe is so beautiful, and I’m so fascinated by the culture. Traveling all over Europe soon is for sure on my bucket list. Sandy: If you could reach your younger self now, what would you say to her and why? Jackie: If I could talk to little Jackie right now, I’d tell her that her roller backpack is cool and that everything happens for a reason. Every job I didn’t get led me to another amazing job I did get! This industry teaches you a lot about yourself, and I wish I knew when I was little. Specifically, that all the times I thought I wanted to quit, but pushed through, led me here. Sandy: Do you have any words of wisdom you would like to give to fans? Jackie: I’m seriously a firm believer that everything does happen for a reason. Do what you love and put in the work and your effort will be valued and appreciated. Sandy: What is the most interesting thing you have heard/seen this week? Jackie: The most interesting thing I’ve seen this week had to be this man at a gas station who was rocking a baby carriage with nothing in it; definitely a weird sight. Sandy: What is the weirdest question you have been asked so far? Jackie: The weirdest question I’ve ever been asked is “Who’s my least favorite cast mate?” Sandy: What show are you currently binge-watching and why? Jackie: I’m re-watching all of New Girl. Every episode makes me cry laughing. The new season also just came out—so I’m trying to catch up to that.

from Friends. She’s so quirky and in her own world. She’s the heart of the friend group and is always super optimistic. Her crazy songs seem super fun to sing too! Sandy: Let’s throw it back to your time on Criminal Minds—what was that like? Do you find it so different to the roles you have been recently playing? Jackie: Criminal Minds was a crazy experience. It was my first guest star role on a show, and I was so new and green—I had no idea what to expect. What was interesting was in an episode when I got pulled out from under the bed, and it was a spontaneous decision by the director to add. Me getting pulled out was never in the original script, so the scream I let out was 100% real! Criminal Minds definitely helped me understand set life and what to expect. Sandy: How did you get involved with Malibu Rescue and do you identify a lot with your character, Dylan? Jackie: My agents got me the audition for Malibu Rescue, where I was originally auditioning for Lizzie. I remember reading the full script, and I instantly felt more like Dylan. After one of the callbacks, the producers felt that, too! Dylan and I have pretty much been in sync ever since the movie. I kept trying to tell myself we aren’t alike and I’m not as dorky as she is, but I’ve realized I totally am. I find myself saying awkward and dorky things she would say. Sandy: Have you ever been a lifeguard in real life? If not, did you have to learn a lot for the role? Jackie: I am actually not a lifeguard! I was still in school while I started filming the movie, and as an assignment, my teacher made me write a 5-paragraph essay on the history and job of a lifeguard. I learned so much, and it was really helpful while filming.

Sandy: Netflix! What is it like being in a Netflix movie/show? Can you give us any details? Jackie: Being on Netflix is insane. Everyone is so sweet, and they really are there for us. It’s been crazy the last couple weeks seeing everything coming together. It was surreal seeing our poster on Netflix. And it was a reality check that this is actually happening. I’m so blessed.

Sandy: Tell us about what it is like working with your costars! What is the vibe? Jackie: When you do an ensemble show, it’s really a 50/50 chance on how you will get along with your co-stars. On Malibu Rescue, we got so incredibly lucky that we all bonded really fast and just had great chemistry. We are all still a super close family when we aren’t filming, too. Work didn’t feel like work at all when we were on set because it was like going to work with your friends. Time flew by.

Sandy: Who is someone you would like to work alongside next (could be director, producer, actor/actress etc.)? Jackie: If I could work with anyone, it would be Quentin Tarantino. He’s a cinematic genius, and it would be amazing to step into his crazy world and see how he works, firsthand.

Sandy: What is next for you? Can you tell us what else you are working on? Jackie: As of right now, Malibu Rescue is my top priority. Waiting to see how everyone reacts, etc. I would love to either work on a season 2 or hop onto a great feature film. Time will tell!

Sandy: If you could play any character on any show, who would you play and why? Jackie: If I could play anyone, I think I would want to be Phoebe
