Hello. Hi. Provincetown’s
SUMMER OF DRAG
Never before in history have so many drag queens converged, staged as many shows in as many drag styles, in as many venues, selling as many tickets to as many fans who will take as many selfies with them than are happening in Provincetown this summer. Nowhere else. Not ever. Which should you see? (pg 80) for Drag-showmatic and Listings (start pg 24). ---------
Thanks to everyone who has helped this 5th edition become our biggest! Please take a look through and notice the ads. (Some are really hot.) And then be a one of those people who lets them know you saw it in Ptown Hacks. We appreciate it. And who doesn’t like to be acknowledged...even if you’re not buying something. Advertising is kind of just saying “Hi” and that your business is welcomed. And honestly, we can’t take even that for granted. So pass along some of the appreciateion we’re also sending your way for having a look and hopefully picking up some of the love we have for the place. So much love... we moved here. ‘ Say hi if you see us out and about (or email at hacks@ptownhacks.com) with comments or to be part of next year’s edition. It’s not you. We really did split covers. Collect them all-- Provincetown First Pride (by the Guild, with Bang the Queen, Jaymes Mansfield, Miss Richfield and Chichi) and Steve Grand ( ). And look for our new ARTStickers in most print versions --Michael Goff, Andy Towle, Towleroad.com and Ptown Hacks

STORM FINDS: “BOY ISLAND” AND ‘GAYHENGE’, THE SUBMARINE TEST TOWER
A quarter mile or so of dunes that used to be middle of ‘Boy Beach’ were wiped out so getting there and back is hazardous at high tide. It’s not just hold-your-phone-up-high-depth any more, and there may be strong currents pulling you out to sea. Also uncovered: the foundations of early 20th century submarine test towers, affectionately dubbed ‘gay henge’. The deep harbor near shore made it ideal for submarines calibrating a nautical mile.
‘GAY-HENGE’ AIDS MEMORIAL INSTALLED Provincetown installed its AIDS memorial this summer. And it’s already sacred to some as a repository for or means of accessing and processing the traumatic losses. Stop and see it on the grounds of Town Hall. Many gay men came here to live and die in the 80s and 90s. Many other gay men, lesbians and allies forged a strong response across the town. And that is what the town honors in the prose describing the epidemic, (but doesn’t mention the homophobia that made it necessary or the populations hardest hit.)
EX-PORN STAR WANTS TO MARRY YOU. Long-time guide for Art’s Dune Tours Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard) knows a ton about Provincetown, the dunes, and the many creative, quirky washashores whose footsteps he walks in. He also knows a thing or two about love and making it. So getting ordained, kind of follows. As he wrote on Instagram, “I will now add this to my list of ‘can-

THE MUST-SEE ART WALK It’s hard to know where to start here in America’s oldest art colony. So here’s our curated stroll (west to east). Friday evening openings are good people watching. Anytime is good to see the art.
1 (131 Commercial) Woodman/Shimko Gallery. Gorgeous new location in the west end (visit their east end gallery too at 398 Commercial)! Striking paintings, rugged portraits, sculpture and ceramics by local artists including Cassandra Complex, Tim Scapes, and Christopher Sousa. 2 (167 Commercial) Jo Hay Open Studio Gallery. Rotating shows of contemporary artists and, if you’re lucky, Jo Hay’s trademark bigger-than-life bunnies. 3 (237 Commercial, 1st floor) Frederick Studio. Painter, cartoonist, and illustrator James Frederick’s colorful Ptown street scenes on wood panels, abstract works, coloring books, and comics leap off the walls! 4 (237 Commercial, 2nd floor) Studio Lacombe. You’ll know someone (perhaps yourself?) who would look stunning in one of photographer/artist Gaston Lacombe’s bright, innovative portrait photo-drawings. Commission one, or pick from what’s on display.
THE MUST-SEE ART WALK, CONT. 5 (115 Bradford) CUSP Gallery. Curtis Speer’s painterly photographs and self-portraits turn heads every time. Ordinary objects made instantly iconic. Rotating shows of emerging photographers too. 6 (349 Commercial) Kyle Ringquist Gallery. A working studio where Kyle’s bold reverse paintings on plexiglas of whale pods, floral bursts, and vivid electric seascapes take shape before your eyes. 7 (432 Commercial) AMP ‘Art Market Provincetown’. Always something lively taking place here - readings, music, and other happenings - amidst ongoing shows of contemporary art. 8 (439 Commercial) The William Scott Gallery. Emerging and mid-career contemporary artists like John Dowd, whose street scenes evoke many a memory of time spent in Ptown. 9 (494 Commercial) Schoolhouse Gallery - You’ll be astonished to learn the history of this building but the art it contains is also a treasure trove of Ptown, including local Mark Adams, whose paintings explore the flora, fauna, geography, and maps of the Cape. 10 The Unexpected. Find it along the way. That’s what art’s all about. Look for some of our other favorites: Bowersock Gallery, On Center Gallery, Kobalt Gallery, Four Eleven Gallery, Julie Heller Gallery, Alden Gallery, TJ Walton Gallery, Stewart Clifford Gallery, and Berta Walker Gallery. Emerging artists rotate at Fine Arts Work Center’s Hudson Walker Gallery. Don’t miss Provincetown Art Association and Museum, PAAM, Cape Cod’s most attended art museum.

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO EAT... ...LUNCH The outdoor raw bar at the Crown & Anchor has the best new street view. For more sunny dining, try Patio with its many outdoor tables. Pepe’s Wharf is waterfront and we love a good Bloody Mary there. Get a high-top at the NorEast Beer Garden and take an afternoon break with their excellent brew selection and gastro-pub fare. Also recommended (mentioned elsewhere) Yolqueria, Bubala’s, Bayside Betsy’s, and Lobster Pot. The bloody at Harbor Lounge is garnished with almost a full salad. WITH LIVE MUSIC OR SPORTS ON TV? Tin Pan Alley is a seasonal American restaurant and piano lounge with music nightly from Jon Richardson, Gerald Goode, or Jim Brosseau. Waydowntown offers modern eclectic fare with live rock and blues bands 4 nights a week. 1620 Brewhouse is a burger and sports bar with a wide selection of beers. The Squealing Pig offers TV sports with pub fare. ...AT THE BAR When we’re out on our own and want to sit at the bar and eat, we love Joon Bar, Ross’ Grill, The Red Inn, Liz’s Cafe, Mac’s Seafood, Strangers & Saints, Jimmy’s Hideaway, Spindler’s, Sal’s Place, Crown & Anchor, and Local 186. THAT’S OK FOR KIDS? Lobster Pot (must-visit Instagram opp. as well). Steamed or baked lobster, of course! Fanizzi’s has a massive menu and Sunday brunch buffet. Bubala’s is great for people watching and has ample outdoor seating. Vorelli’s offers burgers and basic fare right downtown. The Mayflower Cafe is another Ptown classic - have the baked sea scallops stuffed with Ritz crackers.

DINING TABLE SERVICE WHERE CAN I FIND A...ROMANTIC SPOT FOR DINNER?
The Red Inn’s old Cape elegance and harbor views, filet mignon, smoked duck are among the good choices. • Sal’s Place (pictured) a European vibe with modern takes on Italian classics. • Victor’s is upbeat, lively and intimate, withsmall plates that feel special: Deconstructed ahi Napoleon. • Saki offers beautiful sushi and a huge, well-appointed room with large tables and intimate booths.• We’ve had many memorable meals at Joon Bar. Frequently we have duck sliders. • Baie’s lighter Mediterranean vibe feels easy but thoughtful - try the creamy spaghetti with garlic shrimp. • The cozy, classic Italian old-school caverns of Ciro & Sal’s make an intimate escape - we love their vongole bianco. • Edwige is a center-of-town favorite with a few booths, try the braised short ribs or a tender, juicy burger. • Front Street has been around for years for a reason - top rate service and an ever-shifting seasonal menu. • Jimmy’s Hideaway is just that - a cozy den of tasty fish and meat dishes. • Liz’s Cafe/Anybody’s Bar hits a sweet spot with generous classics - fried chicken, mussels, lower price point and comfortable setting. • Mews has elegant tables downstairs with beach views - the vindaloo is delish. • The Pointe offers night views of the Monument and modern coastal fare including grilled tuna and seared Cape halibut. • Ross’ Grill serves up water views and succulent meats. like the roasted rack of lamb. • Spindler’s interior courtyard is a unique spot - try the charcuterie and cheeses..

Among her favorite dishes: Front Street’s penne puttanesca or beans and escarole, Brewhouse’s veggie burger, Connie’s Bakery’s tofu peanut burrito, Fortune Cookie’s tofu and broccoli, the vegan cheese pizzas at Mangia or JD’s, and Relish’s ‘unbelievable’ vegan brownie.

7 FLAWLESS WAYS 1 Herring Cove ‘Boy Beach’ Walk south from Herring TO CATCH Cove parking lot. Storms breached the dunes at ‘boy beach’ over the winter. It‘s now ‘boy island’. If biking, park A FEW RAYS at the Province Lands Road racks north of Bradford and
take a (long) hike over marshes at low tide. Caution! High tide makes getting back potentially hazardous.
2 Pool It! In town, the Crown & Anchor pool and
Boatslip pool are open daily with chaise and towel rentals, in-season grills and full bars. Provincetown Inn pool (fun fact: shape is a Pilgrim’s hat), chaises are coveted on a hot day. Frozen drinks, music, beach access.
3 See that lighthouse across the harbor? Flyer’s (131a
Commercial) runs a shuttle every half hour to Long Point, the very tip of the Cape. Gorgeous view of Ptown, but bring your own food and drink.
4 A half mile walk from the north Herring Cove parking lot is Hatches Harbor, an ever-changing natural inlet where the tides form shallow pools in which to swim.
5 For a quick dip and
sun fix, the town beach next to iconic Captain Jack’s Wharf is a good bet. At W. Vine.
6 If you’re fond of sand dunes...head across Rte 6 at
Snail Road for a hike through the dunes. Stop where you like the view. Or skip out to Race Point Beach.
7 Boats! Charter. Rent. Befriend. Whale watch. Sunset cruise. Kayak. Sail away. Heck, ride the ferry to Boston and back.
MOTHER NATURE UNPAVED A PARKING LOT...AGAIN. PUTTING UP A PARADISE. Provincetown and the National Seashore will not spend any more money trying to prop up the north parking lot at Herring Cove...where one could park and watch the sunset. Many fewer spots now.
60- Special AD
A new lot will be built 125 feet back in the coming years, will require widening the access road, and should last 50 years before erosion is an issue. Millions have been wasted over the past few years, with each fix washed away in months.

Covers We’re thrilled to have singer/songwriter Steve Grand covering half our 5th Ptown Hacks guides. His second album, “Not the End of Me”, drops July 6, just as he opens a second Provincetown residence (Art House. Wed, Thurs, Fri from 7/5 ptownarthouse.com for tix). All the lyrics and music are Grand’s on ‘End of Me,’ “This album is very personal; somber and reflective” he told us. (Available from your favorite digital retailers. For CDs, vinyl, and swag go to shop.stevegrand.com). Asked for his favorite thing to do in Ptown, “riding my bike home after my show each night. Saying hi to people from all over. Feeling the cool breeze off the ocean after a long hot day.”
