MAREK C EC U LA FOUNDER AND LEADER OF MODUS DESIGN, AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR ĆMIELÓW DESIGN STUDIO

This catalog is a presentation of work from the Modus Design studio, which for 30 years has participated in the development of contemporary ceramic design and played an important role as a producer of utilitarian, decorative and artistic porcelain. Many years of experience have lead to the establishment of the new brand Ćmielów Design Studio for the oldest Polish porcelain manufacturer Ćmielów, in 2013.This unique event allowed traditional Polish porcelain to expand into the local and international market by introducing new and innovative collections. The collections in this catalogue come from three different periods:Modus Design New York, Modus Design Kielce and Ćmielów Design Studio. The visual material is accompanied by excerpts from interviews and statements of Marek Cecula.

Today I can say that my years of experience have developed into an unconditional reflex, which can autonomously shift gears and create a synthesis between art and design.

MAREK CECULA - WHY PORCELAIN? ”Art has always been the strongest stimulus for me, but ceramics has this universal multidimensionality. Something in my nature demands orientation and recognition of the creative values hidden in this medium. A plate can lie on a table and fulfill its utility function, but it can also hang on the wall, where it turns into a picture. The same material can create a usable mug or a unique sculpture.” In the 60s when I started working in ceramics, porcelain existed mainly in the industrial domain and was difficult to obtain for individual studios. However, the beauty of this material attracted many ceramic artists and designers. Porcelain is special. It is a noble material, white, transparent, and delicate. Yet, at the same time, it is durable and practical in use. Porcelain also looked fresh and modern compared to brown pottery clays, which were the standard. Seductive and demanding, porcelain has always offered a completely new territory for experimentation and innovation.

MODUS DESIGN - NEW YORK ORIGIN ”I arrived in New York in 1976. I came there from Brazil, my previous base. I wanted to be as close as possible to the centre of contemporary art, to absorb the creative new grounds and the dynamics of NYC. And that’s was Soho, an up-and-coming district of art. I felt that time and space were on my side.”

In Soho, Manhattan, on Sullivan street, I founded the first Contemporary Porcelain studio and showroom. In this artistic environment, my products quickly found interest and the studio grew into an active design operation, under a new brand called Modus Design. Orders from clients like the American Craft Museum, DKNY, Barneys, and the Fillmore in San Francisco, created the need to establish a new source of production. The direction was the porcelain industry. To make this happen, Modus Design moved to Poland in 1999, establishing cooperation with Polish porcelain manufactures.

“So I found myself in New York, a young artist looking for influence and creative energy.

”Ćmielów was always in the back of my mind. My secret wish was that one day I would be able to work in the factory and make ceramic projects, under industrial conditions.”

CMIELOW DESIGN STUDIO - DESIGN AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF TRADITION ” When leaving Poland in 1960, I took along a small illustrated album of Ćmielow porcelain. This album accompanied me through all my wanderings and returned with me to Poland in 2000. The fact that the oldest porcelain factory in Poland was close to my home city, Kielce, was an impressive source of pride with my foreign contacts! I showed them the figurines, forms and patterns from Ćmielów as evidence of the modernity and forward-thinking of Polish design.” The legacy of Ćmielów manufacture, founded in 1790, consists of many outstanding, classical and modernistic collections, which are still popular today. Over the years, many recognized artists cooperated with the factory and left behind their accomplishments in forms and decorations. Today, Marek Cecuła, co-founder and artistic director of the Ćmielów Design Studio is resuming and implementing new programs for artists and designers within the industry.

ĆMIELÓW DESIGN STUDIO CDS Is a professional design studio, operating from 2013 in the Cmielow factoryas a new brand of contemporary Polish porcelain. The aim of CDS is to create original contemporary products, directed to customers looking for modern aesthetics. The studio is located in the heart of the two hundred and twenty year old Ćmielów factory where the long tradition and the classic porcelain is being infused with the artistic sensitivity of contemporary design.

INDUSTRIAL CO Cooperation with the ceramics industry has introduced new design principles to Modus Design. Adaptation of the object to mass-production requires every design to be well planned, not only in terms of functionality, but also suitable for the specific ceramic technology and mechanical processing. Industrial projects are characterized by simplified form, symmetry, ergonomics and standardization. Modus studio has designed and produced a number of tableware collections and porcelain decorations, which are currently a part of a wide range of industrial productions.

Today, contemporary porcelain design must respond to the challenges of the 21st century, to keep up with the spirit of our times and reclaim its new position in a home environment.

The New Atelier collection is the first product to be signed under the brand Ćmielów Design Studio. The design is an example of contemporary aesthetics, with streamlined shapes and minimalist solutions. The three-color design opens the door to interactive arrangement, allowing you to create various color compositions between forms and decor.

Production technology is a critical element and must be taken into account. A form can have a physical manifestation, but this cannot limit or compromise the imagination of the final concept.

The System is a new set of table porcelain, representing contemporary design that expresses the aesthetics of the 21st century. The „System set created in the new technological era. Made by 3D modeling it carries within itself the reflection of this process and representations of our time.

The touch of the human hand, introduced during the industrial production creates the uniqueness of a handcrafted object.

Each of the vessels belonging to this series has been manually immersed in salt of cobalt, forming a unique „touch of blue” on the white porcelain. Despite the apparent repetitiveness, each of these objects is one-of-a-kind. Touch of Blue is an archival project of Modus Design, currentlycarried out in a new version in Ćmielów porcelain, under theĆmielów Design Studio brand.

TOUCH OF BLUE A deep blue color emphasizes the nobility of porcelain, creating elegant table forms with a touch of blue background. This product won the Must Have award from the Łódź Design Festival in 2013.

In my creative process the element of chance is an important factor. It usually brings new direction for further creative explorations.

Each of this mass-produced utilitarian cups has a randomly selected 3-digit number. These unrepeated 999 numbers make each cup an original object, adding a conceptual layer and expanding the conventional use of the cup. Random is another series of objects where decoration becomes information, adding individuality into the industrial mass production.

The long history of ceramics has many practical and artistic achievements which have accompanied humanity in its daily existence. Ornamentation and beauty, injected into the utilitarian ceramic object, have evolved our culture and aesthetics over time.

The central message of this collection is the contrast of two various production sources. Some pieces of the objects originate from hand-made production in the studio, and parts come from the assortment produced industrially by the factory. Both parts are harmoniously connected to create a usable form.

Sometimes the designer becomes just an observer, choosing forms and structures from the limitless sources of nature, transferring them into the aesthetic and practical world.

The designer provides the user with a functional object which carries a message about today’s reality. We bring the presence of nature into everyday life, linking our needs with an object that has been designed by evolution. Natura is a collection of usable ceramic forms and objects which broaden our view on the condition in our environment.

In the studio, which is an active creative lab, we are always finding new inspiration, based on what has already come into being. Colored porcelain is an innovative proposition today’s culinary culture, where original tableware is an important asset, both at home and in the restaurant.

Ceramics is a medium, with two major elements: Art and Design. Moving between them is an important creative exploration. For me personally. I find quite a lot of creative substance that is suitable for both situations in ceramics.

The wide open form of the cup, its soft contour and thinwalled porcelain with the classic handle, makes a delicate but functional object. The cup is available in 5 colors with a matt surface and a glazed interior. White version - glazed in full.

ARTISTIC COLLE The work of designer-artists in the industry usually goes further than designing a routine product and typical production standards by reinterpreting traditional forms, giving them contemporary value. Factory interiors, mass production lines, repeatability of forms, and even porcelain scrap can become an inspiration for artistic activities in the industrial environment.

The abstract art inspiration improves the contemporary quality of the object.

Form and Color is the latest set of table porcelain in the Modus Design studio. Thanks to its strong aesthetic qualities, it is a functional, porcelain artwork. Forms and decorations permeate to form an integral composition. They are divided by strong planes of color, referring to Dutch constructivism and Piet Mondrian’s work. The porcelain set is interactive and thanks to the playfully moving individual elements, its visual layout changes into a new, three-dimensional image.

The „Bauhaus 100” porcelain set was created by interpreting motifs, forms and colors, of the school’s aesthetics creating through this process interactive porcelain coffee set.

The set “Bauhaus 100” was created to commemorate the centenary anniversary of Bauhaus school 1919-2019, which still has a great influence on contemporary aesthetics, especially architecture and design. In my ceramic works, the inspiration and philosophy of the Bauhaus was a frequent factor in the various expressions and forms of the ceramic product. However, the 100 years of Bauhaus gave rise to a special project that introduced my contributions to the anniversaries so important to our culture. so important to our culture.

Process and material are only coefficients in the process of making an object . They should play a minor role in the definition and evaluation of the work.

Introducing unsymmetrical forms based on vertical construction and divided by strong color planes. The Geometria series is an interactive design, inspired by constructivism and Mondrian neoplasticism. It encourages users to play with form and color. When the user moves the individual objects on the tray, a new three-dimensional image is created.

EDYTA CIELOCH My passion and professional work is connected with art and design. My first professional experience I got in the field of classical art in the restoration studios. After some years of involvement in direct contact with the works of old masters and literally “touching” history I decided to develop my own art and design projects and to start my own career.

I have been member of MODUS DESIGN team since 2007. As a senior designer I work on development of specific projects and assisting Mark Cecula in his creative activities. I contribute with my personal designs to the collection of Modus Design and taking part in the evolving projects in form and decor. In the studio we create functional and decorative porcelain, that get the attention of porcelain lovers and contemporary design. Since 2013 I am also designer for Ćmielów Design Studio, a new brand of contemporary Polish porcelain, The studio is in the heart of Cmielow manufacture a heritage of polish industry and culture operating continuously since 1790.

Against the background of this tradition my personal creativity evolve exploring patterns, decoration methods and various hand painted process. I also produce and exhibit my work independently. “Spanish Lace” 2009, porcelain hand carved industrial teapot form is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art & Design in New York City, and in the KOCEF Ceramic Foundation in South Korea I like to paint, painting for me is a pleasure and important part of my professional life, but in the studio I feel more like a designer who is closer to the form and shape of the object.
