WE ARE BIG FANS OF GRANNY CHIC! THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS ADORABLE BOOK IS THAT SO MANY OF THE CRAFT PROJECTS (OR ‘RECIPES’) CAN BE PRODUCED USING REMNANTS. IN FACT, THE BOOKS CREATORS, BLOGGERS TIF FUSSELL AND RACHELLE BLONDEL, ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE ‘SCRAP BOX’. USING SMALL PIECES OF FABRIC AND ODDS AND ENDS FROM LARGER PROJECTS, THEY MANAGE TO COVER EVERYTHING FROM A LAMPSHADE TO THE INSIDE OF A CARAVAN THERE IS SOMETHING INCREDIBLY AUTHENTIC ABOUT THE STYLING USED AND THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE EASY TO FOLLOW. THIS IS QUITE A SUBSTANTIAL BOOK, IT’S BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND WOULD MAKE A FANTASTIC GIFT FOR LOVERS OF VINTAGE, CRAFT AND FABRIC.

IF YOU’RE AN AVID BLOG READER, CRAFTER OR KITCHEN DWELLER, YOU WILL NO DOUBT HAVE HEARD OF BLOGGER EXTRAORDINAIRE, CHERRY MENLOVE, AND IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD OF HER, WELL YOU SOON WILL!! WITH RECENT APPEARANCES IN SAINSBURY’S MAGAZINE AND EASY LIVING AND A BOOK SOON TO BE RELEASED, CHERRY’S IS A NAME YOU WILL HEAR AGAIN AND AGAIN IN 2013. WE CATCH UP WITH HER AS SHE PREPARES FOR CHRISTMAS AT HOME. FIRST THING’S FIRST....IS CHERRY MENLOVE YOUR REAL NAME? Yes! Cherry Menlove is my real name, people are always so surprised! I was named after Cherry Gillespe. She was part of a dance troupe on Top of the Pops. There were five leggy blondes and a tiny little brunette in the middle! Menlove is my family name and you can trace it back to a famous rogue who lived in Liverpool. He has a street named after him and that just happens to be the street where John Lennon was born.

WHAT MADE YOU START YOUR BLOG? I was looking for a product online, I can’t quite remember what it was now, probably a piece of china. The only place I could find any information was on a blog. I sat reading it for ages, I was mesmirised. It was amazing to think that this lady was in America and yet I could read all about her life, her home, her projects. I started reading lots of blogs and eventually decided to start my own. I was hooked. It opened up a whole world of creativity. I’d be wandering around Borough Market thinking ‘I could blog about that’, ‘I can’t wait to show everyone that’.

I discovered skills I never knew I possessed. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS FROM? Anywhere and everywhere. I write often. My blog posts are just a stream of consciousness; I just start doing things and see where they go; I enjoy the process.

SHARING ONLINE ISN’T WITHOUT IT’S PITFALLS, ARE YOU GLAD YOU EMBARKED ON THIS JOURNEY? I love everything about my website and where it’s taking me. I’m quite careful about what I write. I write about my children and Husband because they are so wonderful, but I don’t want to embarrass them or deny them their privacy. My blog is a home and garden blog, not a confessional! So sometimes, when I write a post, I have a time out and decide whether I really want to hit publish!

‘I used to dream of an open house, one where everyone would always be welcome’ YOUR CHILDREN ARE ADORABLE! HOW HAS HAVING TWINS CHANGED YOUR HOME? It hasn’t changed how I decorate, but it has made me a lot less worried! So what if they get chocolate on the couch….the covers are washable. The walls? They can be wiped. My attitude has changed, not my style; although I must admit, there have been a few occasions where I’ve been glad that we haven’t got round to changing the carpets yet!!!

YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WEBSITE AS A HOME FROM HOME, BUT NOW YOU ARE ABOUT TO OPEN UP YOUR HOME FOR REAL!? Yes! Isn’t it exciting? I used to dream of an open house, one where everyone would always be welcome and now I’m hopefully going to get it!

16 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 6

The idea of a school has been in the back of my mind for a long time. Blogging changed my life. I found skills I never knew I possesed, I’m completely self taught with everything. I do what looks nice or feels right and I love passing on skills. I wanted to do it in person. So I started cupcake decorating classes and Picket Fence Bakery was born! The first few classes were held at an outside venue, but there’s no place like home and we decided that our house would make a much better base for the new venture. So I’m currently setting up for next years classes!!

IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH YOU’VE BEEN DOING AN AWFUL LOT OF BAKING RECENTLY, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CAKE? I am currently obsessed with bauble cakes. They are perfectly round and just a feat of engineering! I’ll be teaching a class about them next year.

A LOT HAS HAPPENED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED POSTING! YOU’VE ALWAYS LIKED THE IDEA OF A SCHOOL, BUT DID YOU ALWAYS INTEND TO WRITE A BOOK? It wasn’t my plan when I first set out with my blog, but I’m thrilled that my book is about to be published. I feel like I’m on an amazing journey right now; I’d happily do this for the rest of my life. I’m really lucky! Writing the book has been quite a learning curve as it’s a completely different way of writing. Instructions are very hard to write when you’re used to a blog! I write as though I’m having a chat with the reader, which doesn’t always work in a book,. But we got there in the end and the book will be released in Spring.

Cherry’s book will be released in Spring 2013

SO 2013 WILL BE A BIG YEAR FOR YOU! WHERE WILL YOU SPEND THE LAST OF 2012, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR CHRISTMAS? I plan to spend it at home with the children and Robert. I love home! I love Christmas! It’s my favourite time of year and I think I deserve a rest! Visit Cherry’s home from home on the web www.cherrymenlove.com or to enquire about classes: www.picketfencebaking.com

MARLON BRANDO WAS BORN IN APRIL 1924. ROCK AND ROLL BEFORE ANYBODY

30 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 6

The Classic Smokey eye The Smokey eye became famous in the 1920’s as women looked to the black and white movies in Hollywood for style inspiration. Make up used for the big screen was not only dramatic but also dense in colour and tone making the figure on the screen appears as if she had black eyes and black lips! Women of this time wore their eye make up as heavy as possible and used dark shadow around the eye either smudged rubbed or smoked into it’s fashion of the decade. As time went on and more cosmetic products and tools became available, women were able to be a little more creative with the make up. The 1930’s saw a mix of brown and grey shadows worn a little softer and more smoked giving them a closer appearance to what we are more familiar with today. As time progressed even more colours and tools were easily accessible however the techniques used in the earlier decades were not forgotten and women experimented with different ways of smoking the eye and the socket line. The 60’s saw a great deal of very inventive versions of the Smokey eye! Here are a few tricks of the trade to help you achieve this stunning season’s ‘must have’ look! a. Don’t overwhelm yourself with products. keep it simple. Two brushes only, a flat shadow to apply the product and a more fluffy soft dome style brush for blending. Two shadows are also ample, a light and a dark. b. Choose a shadow for the smoke either a grey (which looks great with green or brown eyes

or a dark brow which works really well with a blue eyes). Only go for black if you are very confident as this is the hardest shadow to work with and not advisable for beginners! c. Sit in front of a mirror with your eyes OPEN. This is the best way to apply eye shadow. Never close your eyes as you loose control of the application and shape. You can use your finger to stretch the eye upward or even to the side so you can apply the shadow all the way to the lash line. Even raising your eyebrows is also a way of stretching out the eye naturally. d. Firstly take a pale shade of shadow (champagne or cream works well, never white) and dust on the brow bone and under the brow. This does two things, it pulls the brow bone forward (bear in mind a Smokey eye is all about tone and shading) and also accentuates the socket line making it easier for the next application. Then dust of the shadow form the brush and apply the darker shade to the socket ONLY. Apply in a pressing motion NOT a swishing motion as particles will then drop and gather in place you don’t want them too.

32 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 6

e. Once you are happy with the dense half moon shape you have created then take your blender brush. NEVER put this brush in a shadow, as it is there only to move around shadow that has already been applied. For this you must be looking straight ahead. An easy way to blend your line is to sit the brush in the socket line and just move it back and forward along the socket line, softening the line and blending slightly upwards into the first part of the brow bone. Once you are more confident you can apply small circular motions to soften the line this is a great way to create good strong blending with a shadow. Continue to take your application brush and press in more shadow and then again use your other brush to blend. Take your time this look cannot be rushed and will benefit from not overloading the shadow. Finally I think a good soft black pencil will finish of a Smokey eye perfectly. Apply a good amount both underneath and on top close to the lash line. Then take your blending brush, cotton bud or even your finger and soften using the same method as above the effect is amazing and voila you have achieved your desired look! The hotel was suitably Deco in terms of the exterior and interior and Ocean Drive was buzzing. The next morning was my first sight of Ocean Drive in daylight. What can I say? Every other word I uttered was “Wow”. The buildings are beautiful, bright and bold. I can see why Miami Beach was known as the American Riveria. The majority of buildings have been lovingly restored and there is the odd building here and there currently being worked on to bring it back to it’s former Deco glory. The Art Deco Welcome Centre is a great place for advice and information on what to do and see during your trip. There are guided and self-guided tours and next door is the gift shop with all sorts of cool and kitsch souvenirs. While we were there, a display of posters that have been designed to promote the Annual Art Deco Weekend got us in the mood for sight seeing. The Miami Design Preservation League are currently promoting the 36th Art Deco Weekend taking place in January 2013 and it sounds like it will be amazing. We were able to watch a short film about the restoration and preservation of Miami Beach over the years, with

preservation of Miami Beach over the years, with interviews from local people and those who have supported the preservation efforts. The great thing was that we could take all this in for free. We spent a few hours mooching round The Wolfsonian Museum where a range of exhibitions take place. Improving the Modern Home 19001945 was particularly interesting. All the guide books that cover the Art Deco District remind you to look out for the 1929 Mailbox form the New York Central Railroad Terminal. It was a beautiful bronze masterpiece so I’m glad of the tip to look out for it. You really start to get a sense of what it must have been like during the 20s and 30s. It almost seems strange to see people in modern clothing, driving new cars up and down the avenues. The trip only reinforced my thoughts that I was born in the wrong era! Carrie-Ann
