Affiliation ASSA is a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations–Egypt (IFMSA-Egypt) which is a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students’’ Associations (IFMSA) The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) is a non-political and non-profit organisation recognised as one of the oldest and largest student-run organisations in the world. IFMSA was established in 1951 to serve as a platform for unity, collaboration and peace amongst international medical students. It was established by eight European countries, and has since expanded to include 97 member organizations from 92 countries in 2009. All these member organizations have local committees of medical faculty organizations who execute to work of IFMSA. The mission of IFMSA is to create culturally sensitive medical students who are aware of national and international challenges to community health and who can make a difference in creating a healthier society. IFMSA offers its members a wide range of unique experiences in various fields related to community and global health. It is the perfect place for medical students to receive capacity building exercises in diverse areas equipping them with the necessary tools to become better physicians. The IFMSA is officially recognised by the WHO, the WMA and the UN as the voice for international medical students, and is invited to many of their annual conferences. Amongst these conferences is the World Health Assembly organised by the WHO where the IFMSA represents the views of future physicians when it comes to international health concerns. The IFMSA’s activities range from raising awareness on public health, human rights & peace and reproductive health issues to involving students actively in curricular reform and medical education. Our activities also encompass the largest international student exchange program, with more than 10,000 medical students given the opportunity to experience medicine and research as practiced in countries other than their own. We also have a very active training division that offers IFMSA’s members a wide range of trainings in the fields of; leadership, strategic planning, time management, project planning, presentation skills, public relations, fundraising and marketing amongst others.

SCOME (Standing Committee on Medical Education) SCOME, the Standing Committee on Medical Education, is one of the six Standing Committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and IFMSA - Egypt. SCOME is a discussion forum for students interested in the different aspects of medical education in the hope of pursuing and achieving its aim. Medical Education should be a concern of every medical student as it shapes not only the quality of future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare. In Egypt, SCOME was first officially introduced during the 2002-2003 term. Since then dozens of initiatives, projects and activities were launched and carried out.

Mission Our mission is to build awareness on topics needed for changing the Medical Education for the better.

Activities Influence of Studying on Students’ Health (ISSH) 15 – 16 December 2010 The aim of the ISSH project is to determine the level of deterioration of health among medical students as a result of stress-related factors and to develop programs to reduce or even prevent it. This year during December 2010, a new phase of the project started in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine aiming at helping medical students to cope with stress and get acquainted with many useful studying techniques.

SCORA (Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS) SCORA, the Standing Committee on Reproductive health including AIDS, is one of the six Standing Committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and IFMSA - Egypt. SCORA is a forum for active discussion for medical students interested in promoting reproductive health. Our overall goal is the implementation of an optimal understanding of the reproductive health problems and their prevention by medical students. In Egypt, SCORA started to work effectively more than 5 years ago and organizes many events for medical students, from different universities around Egypt to guide them on how to improve reproductive health issues in our country. SCORA work reached the maximum within the last 2 years. It is now well established in 13 medical schools in Egypt. This big number of participation allowed the increase in various topics & styles of this committee’s work.

Mission Our mission is to offer Egypt’s future physicians a comprehensive introduction to reproductive health. Through education, we aim to raise awareness on a variety of reproductive health issues amongst the wide public, and strive to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and whilst challenging the widespread violation of reproductive rights and gender inequality.

Activities NGOs Outreach Capacity Building to reach MARPs 23 – 27 October 2010 ASSA members participated in this capacity building training held by Caritas Egypt – Alexandria at Alexandria Reproductive Health Research Center. The training was recruiting participants able to carry out a networking task with other NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS to reach most at risk populations (MARPs). HIV/AIDS Peer Education Training for Medical Students 28 November 2010 It's an ongoing project aiming at improving health care professionals' knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and practices toward people living with HIV (PLHIV). A six hour training was given for 36 participants by a Y-Peer certified peer educator in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine. The training focused on HIV basics and the Stigma and discrimination associated with it followed by the WAC guidelines and some organizational skills required for the field work mentioned hereinafter.

In collaboration with the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), an awareness campaign was carried out in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine and it included:  Setting an awareness booth  Providing a mobile VCCT unit  Distribution of IEC materials and red ribbons The interactive games performed were:  “I fight” photo game about stigma  Awareness red zone  “Stick the sticky” game about HIV modes of transmission  “Snakes and ladder” game about HIV/AIDS basics The campaign was held simultaneously in 12 Universities in 10 different governorates allover Egypt. World AIDS Day – Public Celebration "Your participation means your interest" 8 December 2010 ASSA in partnership with Alexandria Scientific Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (ASPSA) and Caritas Egypt - Alexandria were all celebrating the World AIDS Day at Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The program included the following activities:  Awareness and entertainment stations to provide correct information to the community about HIV/AIDS such as: “Know More”, “Promise Tree”, “See an HIV patient” and “Leave your Hand print”.  Providing a mobile VCCT unit at the site of celebration.  Press conference to draw the public attention towards the Stigma and Discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS.  Live Concert featuring the performance of 5 bands: Seizure, Belm2loob, Peace Cake, Station and Portrait Avenue.

Alexandria Students' Scientific Association Member of IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Associations) ‫اﻟﺠﻤﻌﯿﺔ اﻟﻌﻠﻤﯿﺔ – ﻛﻠﯿﺔ اﻟﻄﺐ – ﺟﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻹﺳﻜﻨﺪرﯾﺔ‬ ‫ﻋﻀﻮ اﻻﺗﺤﺎد اﻟﻔﯿﺪراﻟﻲ اﻟﺪوﻟﻲ ﻟﺠﻤﻌﯿﺎت ﻃﻼب اﻟﻄﺐ‬ World AIDS Day – AIDS Bicycle Challenge "The ride doesn't end until AIDS does" 10 December 2010 A cycling marathon on along Alexandria Corniche in commemoration of World AIDS Day to show support to 33 million people worldwide suffering from HIV and contribute in fighting this disease. The event was held in collaboration with Rotaract Alexandria El-Nozha and Cycle Egypt. The number of participants was 70 bikers and they received red T-shirts to wear during the marathon to show support for this cause and during the break, a brief awareness session was introduced focusing on HIV modes of transmission and methods of prevention. Happy Marriage Awareness Campaign 20 May 2011 It’s a national project concerned with health education and raising awareness of women and men about the medical aspects in the process of marriage. The message highlights the importance of pre-marital examination, health education about natal and post-natal care, and also tackling the social issues in marriage. The campaign took place during “Bokra A7la” carnival held at the stadium of Lycée Al-Horreya School. ASSA team had an awareness booth where they distributed a concise guide containing all the essential knowledge and recorded some interviews with the public about the social aspects of marriage and how to tackle them effectively. Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Reaching the greatest number of public aiming to reduce cancer burden on the local level to enable a supportive environment to deal with cancers and associated problems without myths and stigma attached, by implanting best evidence based social marketing and communications strategy models. The campaign was held in collaboration with Alexandria Students’ Pharmaceutical Scientific Association (ASPSA) and Suzanne Mubarak Regional Center for Women’s Health (SMC). Interactive approach was used (Snake game – Face paintings – Choose a ball competition – Longest banner). The campaign aimed to promote for primary prevention and early detection of the Breast cancer by distributing discount cards with 50% discount at the SMC and 80% discount at Elhedaya Hospital (sponsor of the event). The project was implemented in 2 phases:  Targeting medical students in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine – 30 October to 2 November 2010  Targeting the general population in Carrefour city center – 2 December 2010

SCOPH (Standing Committee on Public Health) SCOPH, the Standing Committee on Public Health, is one of the six Standing Committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and IFMSA - Egypt.. SCOPH is a forum for active discussion for medical students who work together to improve the public's awareness, encourage them to take on healthy life styles and get rid of wrong health beliefs, which are the major factors in most health issues that we face in our country. In Egypt, we deeply believe in the vital role that should be played by the Public Health sector and are compelled to and concerned with all issues that affect Public Health. The SCOPH team gathers medical students from many universities all over Egypt. Together we work hand in hand for the good of the public’s health and to promote public awareness.

Mission Our mission is to offer Egypt’s future physicians a comprehensive introduction to public health issues, who will in turn improve public health awareness. We are dedicated to try to influence the public health status in Egypt.

Activities World Diabetes Day 24 – 25 November 2010 Target Group: Medical students (17-24 years) and Alexandria Facultyof Medicine employees (random ages) Goals:  To raise awareness of people about the early symptoms of DM  To raise awareness about risk factors and how to avoid future illness  Advocacy about the danger of the disease  To educate people about the complication of the disease  Promoting healthy life styles The project started by training the project team on the health message and how to deliver it then the awareness campaign was implemented at the faculty campus approaching 350 students and 70 employees. Hand Hygiene Project (Hy–Five) “Save lives ... Clean your hands” 5 May 2011 Hand hygiene refers to removing or killing microorganisms (germs) on the hands. When performed correctly, hand hygiene is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and

In health care, hand hygiene is used to eliminate transient microorganisms that have been picked up via contact with patients, contaminated equipment or the environment. Hand hygiene may be performed either by using soap and running water, or with alcohol-based hand rubs. Target Group: Children under the age of six years The delivered health messages:  Germs can be transmitted by many ways, including touching dirty hands, changing dirty diapers, through contaminated water and food, through droplets released during a cough or a sneeze, via contaminated surfaces and through contact with a sick person's body fluids.  Good hand washing protects against the spread of many illnesses, from the common cold to more serious illnesses such as flu and infectious diarrhea. Implementation: At Children’s House nursery school, leaflets were distributed amongst the children so that they would get a brief idea about hand hygiene. Then, we showed them how to wash their hands using water and soap and we made sure they knew the right technique by letting them repeat the procedure again in front of us. Teddy Bear Hospital Project 11 May 2011 Teddy bear hospital aims to introduce the clinical examination to children aged between 4-6 years in a playful way in order to reduce their fears and at the same time provide an opportunity for medical students to learn more about pediatrics and interaction with children. Target Group: Children aged between 4-6 years The delivered health messages:  Don’t be afraid of doctors, they are friendly and they will help you get better when you feel pain.  Always try to tell your doctor everything you feel to help him diagnose your case and prescribe the right medication. Implementation: At Children’s House nursery school, we guided the children around various activity stations, representing different areas of a hospital. The children’s teddy bears stood in for patients in need of help, with tummy aches, sore throat and even broken legs. The children played the roles of the medical team. They were dressed up as doctors and performed examinations and operations.

Within community, doctors are the most knowledgeable in health issues and they are expected to act on the basis of this knowledge. Doctors are expected to be role models for the rest of the population and that includes their behaviour in health-related matters such as diet and exercise, and particularly regarding smoking. Target Group: Medical students and health care professionals The delivered health messages:  Doctors are the most knowledgeable in health issues and they are expected to act on the basis of this knowledge.  Doctors are expected to be role models for the rest of the population and that includes their behaviour in health-related matters such as diet and exercise, and particularly regarding smoking. Implementation: Leaflets were distributed to assess and raise awareness of medical students and doctors of impact of smoking behaviour on the public, smoking hazards and tobacco control. We worked on promoting and advocating the non smoking behaviour of medical students by using simple models and games.

SCORP (Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace) SCORHP, the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace, is one of the six Standing Committees of IFMSA – Egypt. SCORP is a forum for active discussion for medical students interested in promoting humanitarian issues. In Egypt, it was initiated in 2007 to gather medical students from different universities around Egypt to guide them on how to share in and advocate for humanitarian issues and promote relevant projects in Egypt.

Mission Our mission is to offer Egypt’s future physicians a comprehensive introduction to humanitarian issues. We are dedicated to work towards empowering and improving the life of vulnerable people and alleviating the pain of those suffering.

Activities The International Day of Peace 21 September 2010 As a member of IFMSA-Egypt, ASSA has participated in “International Day of Peace” project organized by the Institution of Peace Studies and Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The project aimed at delivering an effective message through the means of the written and seen media to let the whole world reach peace and to find a way for the conflicts worldwide to be settled. It was an all-day event with a program full of different of activities for children and youth as well. There was also some NGOs and international organizations that shared in the activities. Blood Donation Campaign “Donate blood … Donate life” 29 – 30 December 2010 Together with El Shatby Hospital Blood Bank, the campaign was held at Alexandria Faculty of Literature. Methodology:  Partnership with the University Hospital Blood Bank to set fully equipped station for blood donation.    

Public awareness on the necessity of blood donation and its medical importance with the use of printed educational materials. The university hospital’s blood bank team established their blood collecting station with 4 social workers, 3 nurses and a doctor to outline for potential donors the medical specifics of the donation process. Blood bags were collected with those matching criteria while others willing but not capable on the day to donate were added to the database. Those under 18, have previously donated within previous 3 months or not fit to donate blood were excluded from the donating process but were added to the database.

Through our yearlong visits to Alexandria's orphanages, we'll be trying to become Big Brothers and Big Sisters to the children with our regular visits & support in any way we can. Moreover, we will be accompanying our Little Brothers and Little Sisters to play, have picnics or see football matches outside the regular visits. The first visit was at Red Crescent Orphanage in Smouha, Alexandria. Upon arrival, we were given a briefing of the household status from the orphanage’s manager as well as the general obstacles that face the orphanage to persist a sustainable operation of the household for the orphans. The team was informed of the conditioning of the children, 28 in total, taking residence in the orphanage. We were instructed on the means of addressing the children’s emotions along with their educational and social attitudes we will be exposed to. The program was started by half an hour free-time for the children and the team to get to know one another. A team of 25 volunteers from different academic grades of our faculty mingled easily with the children at a surprising rate. The team was divided into mini-stations for face-painting, snacks distribution with healthy diet tips, growing plants in plastic cups, teaching ABCs of photography and doodling. The Big Brother Initiative – Orphans Day Celebration 15 April 2011 The celebration featured 1200 orphans approximately from over 15 orphanages in Alexandria with predominance of impoverished shelters. ASSA team was participating in this event which was mainly supplied by the Acacia club which organizes such celebration in Alexandria on an annual basis. The charity surplus was directed to the ICU unit of El Shatby Pediatrics Hospital.

SCOPE/SCORE (Standing Committee on Professional/Research Exchange) SCOPE, the Standing Committee on Professional Exchange, is one of the six Standing Committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and IFMSA - Egypt. SCOPE is the first IFMSA Standing Committee to be created. It constitutes the largest exchange program within the IFMSA and it has been running since the organization's foundation in 1951. SCORE, the Standing Committee on Research Exchange, is one of the six Standing Committees of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and IFMSA - Egypt. SCORE provides medical students from around the world the unique opportunity to participate in exceptionally rewarding and affordable clinical or pre-clinical research projects in a foreign country. Through this international exchange program, SCORE hopes to contribute to the international co-operation and understanding between the medical faculties, research institutes and - last but not least - among the students and health care professionals.

Mission Our mission is to promote international understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals through international exchange of students and to offer medical students from around the world the opportunity to participate in a unique research and cultural experience through clinical or preclinical research projects.

Activities Outgoing Exchange Division Through SCOPE/SCORE ASSA gives around 30 students every year the chance to participate in an international exchange program to gain clinical and research experience from different hospitals and research institutes around the world. Selection of the Exchange candidates passes through phases of exams and interviews to provide a fare and clear criteria of selection for all medical students in Alexandria University.

Incoming Exchange Division Through SCOPE/SCORE ASSA hosts around 30 incoming Exchange students every year arranging boarding, lodging, scientific and social program for them. ASSA incoming exchange division is constantly receiving wonderful feedbacks from exchanges worldwide for its well organized, sustainable and professional arrangement.

IFMSA-Egypt 3rd National Weekend 2011 20 – 22 July 2011 NWE 2011 is the event of the year in the New Egypt where the amazing blend of cultures will conjure a spell-binding gathering. It’s where medical students meet from all over the world to get the chance to join us in a life changing experience under the serene skies and splendid beauty of the Siwa Oasis. As usual ASSA participated in this event and the incoming exchange students were excited to spend such weekend. Moreover, the Head of OC was Mr. Amir Hamdy, ASSA local exchange officer.

Local Activities Social Activities ASSA Orientation Session 25 November 2011 It was held at the Medical Education in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine aiming at introducing ASSA vision and activities and presenting ASSA Board members and their different fields of work to all faculty students in order to increase their involvement in different extracurricular activities. LEO-Act 7: Football Tournament 2 – 4 December 2010 After winning the last year tournament cup, ASSA participated with 2 teams in LEO-Act Football Tournament organized by the LEO & the ALPHA LEO at Alexandria University Stadium. Graduation Day of Class 2009 14 April 2011 As it has been going on for years, ASSA team participated in the organization of Graduation Day of Class 2009 of Alexandria Faculty of Medicine with celebration of the Egyptian revolution. The event was held at the Conference Center of Bibliotheca Alexandrina in coordination with Public Relations department and Youth Care department. Yacht Trip 15 May 2011 The program included a cruise in the charming Mediterranean Sea to enjoy the warm sun and the refreshing breeze in addition to fishing, swimming and much more excitement.

ASSA Emergency Medicine Summer Course ASSA Emergency Medicine Summer Course is concerned with teaching medical students how to deal with patients with acute illnesses or injuries which require immediate medical attention and to undertake acute interventions to stabilize the patient. This was done through lectures and clinical training in addition to clinical visits to the faculty hospital during which students can practice what they learned during lectures under the supervision of doctors. The participants were divided into smaller groups for the clinical teaching and the Hands-On experience when dealing directly with patients. Attendance: 80 participants Topics included:  Fracture injuries  Arrhythmias  ECG  Poisoning Management  Burns  Sutures  OTC drugs  Hemorrhagic Shock Treatment and Management  Normal Labor and Obstetric Emergencies

Happy Marriage National Awareness Campaign Happy Marriage is a project concerned with health education and raising awareness of women and men about the medical aspects in the process of marriage. The message highlights the importance of pre-marital examination, health education about natal and post-natal care, and also tackling the social issues in marriage. Date: 28 April 2011 Description: A team of 16 IFMSA-Egypt members visited different healthcare institutions in Alexandria to implement the Happy Marriage project as follows  Ras EL Tin General Hospital A training was given to introduce the project message to the attendants as a refresher of their roles. The Head of Obs/Gyn department in the hospital provided a brief talk about the nature of his work with women, and specific advice of how to handle critical cases in the department. The attendants were divided into 2 teams: o Team 1: (Antenatal and natal care) headed to the gynecology clinic where they gave health education about natal care. o Team 2: (Postnatal care) headed to wards of C-section patients and held a one-to-one interview with the freshly new moms about postnatal care.  Al-Gomrok Family Health Centre The manager took us in a tour and explained the services available in the centre.

She explained the Family file and its importance and then introduced us to the customers of the centre which we had the opportunity to talk to and deliver our message.  Suzanne Mubarak Regional Center for Woman’s Health The Tour guide first showed us the halls of the centre and then the skill lab containing medical mannequins of the female body and different organs, including the process of pregnancy. We completed our tour with a look at the library, which has access to registered paid online articles for medicine and woman’s health.

IFMSA-Egypt 3rd GA in the term 2010-2011 In April 2011, ASSA successfully hosted the IFMSA-Egypt 3rd General Assembly in the term 2010-2011 at Alexandria Faculty of Medicine. The event started by a Pre-GA President Session on 28 April 2011. The main event was the GA itself held on 29 April 2011 and the number of participants exceeded 330 medical students from 16 medical schools all over Egypt. The participants spent 2 days in the charming city of Alexandria enjoying the wonderful weather, meeting their friends and sharing in discussions and projects adding to the progress of IFMSA-Egypt.
