Season of Emergence Gearing up for the summer, we are excited to share new offerings and experiences

Dear Friends, I hope that you and yours have stayed safe this past winter. I am optimistic about the upcoming season of emergence—on many fronts—providing the most unforgettable summer yet on the New England coast. Gearing up for summer is one of the most exciting times of year for me, and our five-star teams have a lot planned for you. In the pages that follow we explore many experiences, including imaginative new dining at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn. Guests have been applauding the physically distanced and private dining options at all of our properties, and we’re pleased to unveil new menus and concepts at some of our most popular venues—from the Pondhouse at Weekapaug Inn to brand new concepts like The Sipping Terrace at Ocean House, an afternoon tea, cocktails and dinner offering with partner Sipsmith Gin. Beyond the coast, we take a closer look at Preserve Sporting Club & Residences in Richmond, Rhode Island and Inn at Hastings Park in Lexington, Massachusetts. In a profile about Preserve—where 3,500 acres of outdoor adventure await—take a peek at first-class lodging experiences that suit a variety of traveler’s needs. Luxury suites in the new Hilltop Lodge will soon join the other exceptional and versatile accommodations that make Preserve the perfect escape for adventurous guests and families of all sizes. At Inn at Hastings Park—the charming Relais & Châteaux property just minutes from Boston—we explore the abundance of new culinary experiences they’ve been cooking up for you. Inn owner Trisha Pérez Kennealy and her team spent the winter launching everything from a new weekly menu concept in the acclaimed Town Meeting Bistro to immersive culinary weekends. And the summer season means the return of the Whispering Angel Culinary Garden. Lastly, we’re hopeful that sooner rather than later we can return to the larger celebrations and gatherings that are among the most cherished traditions at each of our properties, weddings being chief among them. In the meantime, we share two couples’ stories of their intimate nuptials that captured the grandness and magic of a wedding at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn. nhale. Exhale. Take some deep cleansing breaths and indulge in the relaxing experience of your coastal getaway. You can do it wherever you are at the Ocean House and feel good about it. That’s because the air guests are breathing inside rivals what they experience outside along the Watch Hill coastline. Maybe cleaner! Since last spring Ocean House’s guest rooms, suites, cottages and common areas have been appointed with state-of-the-art air purifiers by Molekule. The family-founded, San Francisco-based company has transformed years of scientific research—and a collective passion for creating cleaner indoor environments—into next generation technology that doesn’t just collect and trap airborne irritants and pathogens. It destroys them. “In the past year, we’ve all had important lessons on how essential it is to be breathing clean air in the spaces we inhabit,” says Jaya Rao, Cofounder and CEO of Molekule. “The need for cleaner air is imperative now, which is why what we’re doing at Molekule is so critical and timely. We’ve created systems that catch bad things in the air.” For Rao and the Molekule team, a shared dedication to creating reimagined indoor air purification systems is deeply personal.

The spark behind Molekule began more than 25 years ago with Rao’s father, solar energy researcher Dr. Yogi Goswami. His work at the University of Florida and the University of South Florida led to the patented PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) technology that is the genius behind Molekule’s sleek, whisper-quiet systems. “He always had a passion for the environment and began with work trying to clean up contaminated jet fuel from groundwater,” explains Rao. “And as he did this work, he figured he could use some of the same technology to clean the air above the ground.” Rao laughs as she shares that she and her brother, Dilip Goswami, (now Molekule’s President and Chief Technology Officer) were guinea pigs for her father's prototypes. Rao admits she was a skeptic initially, but her brother believed he could feel a difference in the air. Their father’s research continued. Three years ago, Molekule launched its reimagined air purification systems in a range of sizes for commercial and residential spaces. Rao and her brother, Stanford-trained engineers, were company cofounders. “We’re very proud that the technology we use at Molekule is my father’s invention,” Rao says. What sets Molekule apart from rivals is that they typically rely on HEPA-type filters, designed

to merely trap bad air particles, Rao explains. Molekule’s PECO technology works to eradicate pathogens such as VOCs, mold, viruses, gaseous cleaning chemicals and other environmental toxins, rather than simply sucking them into a filter. Its filters are coated in a proprietary catalyst that, when activated by light, creates a reaction on the surface of the filter that breaks pollutants at the molecular level. In its systems, LED light is the catalyst that stealthily recognizes pathogens and obliterates them. Molekule’s technology has been tested in numerous thirdparty laboratories to demonstrate its effectiveness in capturing and destroying viruses. “I have a vivid way of explaining how it works. Imagine air pollutants as a bunch of zombies,” Rao says. “Instead of just capturing them and trapping them where they stay in that room, we make the zombies go poof.” Besides restaurants, nail salons and luxe destinations such as Ocean House, an increasing number of residential customers are using Molekule for the peace of mind that comes from having cleaner air. “For many people, what’s going on with the air indoors is a really big threat, but you can’t always pop open a window to get fresh air,” says Rao. “That’s why our partners like Ocean House have Molekule.”

What to SEE My first stop with out-of-town friends is D Narragansett Beach. We typically walk to the end of the beach and swim to the sandbar at Narrow River, or we kayak in these calmer waters. I love to visit E Roger Williams Park in Providence, especially the Japanese Gardens. Our final stop is usually F Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, where you can explore army barracks from the First and Second World Wars, along with marveling at Newport Harbor views and the East passage of Narragansett Bay.

Where to SHOP As a trained and educated chef, my first spot is G Neapolis, the original Pasquale’s pizzeria in Wakefield. They have so many wonderful treats from Italy that are hard to find anywhere else in New England. Non culinary-related, my favorite shop is here at the Preserve. H The Preserve Sporting Shoppe has a vast selection, the prices are incredible and the service is tremendous. The Post Hotel & Spa was built during the World War II era by a crew of just 10 men. It has since had several owners who expanded the property, with the current owners taking the reins in the late 1970s. They added fine dining and Europeantrained chefs, and grew the wine program. By the mid1980s, the restaurant was so popular they decided to expand and upgrade the hotel too. Today, the Post’s wine cellar is among the most impressive in Canada, with a collection of more than 25,000 bottles. In 2020, the hotel was yet again a recipient of the Wine Spectator Grand Award, the brand’s highest honor for the top level of wine service—an award the property has won every year since 2002. Guests eager to taste some noteworthy bottles with finely paired cuisine should try the Wine Maker’s Dinner Series, with each meal limited to 30 guests. For serious foodies, a new offering called the Gourmet Package is scheduled to begin in June. Chef Hans Sauter

is preparing a six-course menu paired with wines from the cellar. The package also includes two nights in a deluxe room with a king bed and fireplace, breakfast each morning, and a welcome wine and fruit basket. Banff National Park has almost 1,000 miles of trails to explore, and there are four noted golf courses nearby. The renowned Banff Springs offers a par-71 course with 18 holes and stunning mountain views. And when it’s time to relax, the hotel’s Temple Mountain Spa offers a range of massages, body therapies, facials, and nail and waxing services. At Aubergine, the awardwinning restaurant of L’Auberge Carmel, the eightcourse tasting menu changes every day. Executive Chef Justin Cogley and Pastry Chef Yulanda Santos work with the season’s best ingredients, and with the property’s 2,500bottle wine cellar, which has a special focus on bottlings from Monterey County and France. Expect the menu to include dishes made with interesting combinations that elevate the palate and surprise the senses, such as an artichoke tart with white anchovy, honeycomb and mint, or a strawberry cremeaux with pistachios and olive oil cake. The restaurant, like the rest of the property, combines modern excellence with classic touches. L’Auberge Carmel has a décor that features original coved plaster walls and antique doorknobs, but also flatscreen televisions and Wi-Fi. Bathrooms combine antique travertine tiles with radiant floor heating. The sinks are hand-hammered copper, while the custom bath products are contemporary. Helga Horner, most recently in the news for interior design on 2626 Larkin—one of San Francisco’s most renowned townhouses at an asking price of $25 million—chose the

open-canopied and tufted beds, antiques and custom fabrics found throughout L’Auberge Carmel’s guest rooms. And everything that L’Auberge Carmel offers is in the heart of Carmel-bythe-Sea, a city that in and of itself combines classic architecture and the feeling of a quaint village with modernday pursuits such as surfing and scuba diving. Shops here are as unique as they come, such as Viau’s Antique Jewelry and the Carmel Pipe Shop. Restaurants in Carmel, too, are far from the ordinary. One example is Le Soufflé, with just six tables, fine dining, French wines and, of course, various types of soufflés for dessert. (A bite of the Grand Marnier soufflé, perhaps?) When real-estate developer Robert Walton Goelet died in 1941, he owned more property than almost anyone else in New York City. He had his choice of where he wanted to spend his time, and starting in 1911, that included Glenmere—a country retreat he commissioned in the style of villas he had seen in Tuscany, Italy. The retreat overlooked Glenmere Lake and thousands of acres of land he owned, and he hired America’s first major female landscape architect, Beatrix Jones Farrand, to design the Glenmere Gardens. Much of their vision survives more than a century later at Glenmere Mansion, which has been restored with a great deal of attention to preserving original architectural details. Guests can walk through the marblecolumned porticos, up the majestic interior and exterior staircases, and throughout the formal gardens—all 150 acres of them, including the fountains. The Supper Room is filled with antiques and custom, hand-painted eglomise panels that depict the countryside in Tuscany. An Italianate fireplace sets the mood during the fall and winter months. This summer, when guests explore the sprawling 3,500-acre property, they will find safari tents fashioned as chic lounges. This luxurious new venue is in collaboration with Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled on the Isle of Islay in Scotland, and Cohiba cigars, premium handmade cigars blended with the finest tobaccos. The Bowmore tent offers a sweet and savory menu paired with the brand's whiskies, while the Cohiba cigar lounge features a curated cigar collection. You’ll see. Driving back, the landscape is idyllic as you munch a baked delight and meditate on the day. Everything on the itinerary is quite close to 6 Ocean House so it’s no big time investment. And the dinner conversation is always livelier after time spent touring these wondrous environs.

DANIEL A. HOSTETTLER Bringing a hands-on style to hospitality, Hostettler ensures an exceptional guest experience

H

ospitality at its finest requires meticulous attention to the details of a guest’s experience. And finding and training a team that can accomplish this magic, with nearly invisible precision, has been the modus operandi of Daniel Hostettler, Ocean House Management Collection’s (OHM) President and Group Managing Director, since he joined the organization in 2009. Back then, Ocean House was undergoing a complete transformation, from aging dowager to elegant queen of the Atlantic. Under Hostettler’s direction, OHM’s flagship hotel has become one of just a handful of resorts that can boast triple five-star ratings from Forbes, plus a host of other laurels. The operation that he developed has set the stage for a growing enterprise that includes the management of multiple premium

properties under the OHM umbrella. In addition to his main post, Hostettler has also taken a leadership role in the Relais & Châteaux North America group of hospitality properties, serving as its president since 2018. Observing that his ever-broadening responsibilities only seem to further energize this maestro of hospitality, we had to ask: How does he do it all? Mentored early in his career by Ali Kasikci, the storied managing director of the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, Hostettler had the opportunity to learn about every aspect of resort operation—from grand entrance to back of house, and top to bottom. “He moved me six times in six years,” recalls Hostettler, “and his training gave me a fanatical focus on service and attention to detail.” That experience taught him to hire for

personality—a good people person—and then train for skill. In his hierarchy of talents, skill means a consistent aim toward perfection. “I’ll settle for excellence,” he says. To do this, he packs his daily schedule with face-to-face interactions with staff and guests. “My style is to lead from the front,” says Hostettler. “You cannot learn this business behind the desk in your office.” That’s why, during a stay at an OHM property, you may find Daniel Hostettler at the resort entrance, working with valets to greet guests for an overflow event and put their cars away. He might even pour your coffee at breakfast. “It’s not the norm to see a company president parking cars,” he admits, “but a hands-on approach constantly reminds me that I am in the innkeeping business.”

ntonia Korosec left Texas for her home in Monaco after boss Daniel Hostettler took a management position at then underconstruction Ocean House in 2009. Hostettler, who is now President and Group Managing Director of Ocean House Management Collection, was looking for hospitality talent to help him build the property into a five-star resort. He lured Korosec back to the states as his Assistant Director of Rooms. Eleven years later, she has built her career at OHM resorts. No one expected to bring Westerly to prominence as a resort destination, but Hostettler’s instincts proved prescient. After Ocean House achieved a fifth Forbes star, he moved Korosec to its sister property Weekapaug Inn to watch over the renovation and then assume leadership as innkeeper. Over the next two-and-a-half years, she and her staff proceeded to burnish its reputation for casual luxury and attentive, individualized service. With that mission accomplished and a capable team in place, she moved back to the ever-evolving flagship property; its success had fostered expansion and required a larger management organization, and her responsibilities continued to grow. By late 2017, her can-do dedication to team building and providing top-of-the-line guest service brought another laurel. At the holiday staff party, Hostettler handed her a small gift box; inside were business cards that read, “Antonia Korosec, General Manager, Ocean House.” The gesture brought her to happy tears, but it was a well-deserved promotion. While one may see Korosec at many spots on the property from early morning until well into the dinner hours, she considers her job to be exceptionally rewarding, and it provides a simple lesson:

or guests traveling by helicopter or private plane, there’s a new Ocean House Management Collection VIP lounge and culinary option at Westerly Airport. The restaurant, aptly named Plane Food, puts a gourmet spin on airport fare. The concept, dreamed up by Daniel Hostettler, President and Group Managing Director of Ocean House Management Collection, debuted this spring. “The idea was to create a luxury lounge where our guests can wait while we’re loading their luggage, and the plane is being prepared,” says Hostettler. “When flying in, they can relax in the lounge before we take them to the hotel.” Decked out in plush club chairs and sofas

with a signature Ocean House feel, the VIP venue allows guests to unwind with complimentary beverages before takeoff or after touch down. Meals are enjoyed indoors or on an outdoor terrace with a runway view. The OHM-staffed lounge can also pack up to-go meals in a cooler. The new space was created by OHM Design Group, led by Hostettler and interior designer Brittany Borghesi. Going for a "contemporary, coastal feel," the team chose a blue and cream palette with textured accents. Plane Food features breakfast items like coffee, egg sandwiches, freshly made croissants and egg burritos. There are also salad offerings, sandwiches, hot dogs and a gourmet grilled

cheese selection. Although the lounge is reserved for OHM guests, Plane Food has a grab-and-go kitchen for public travelers wanting beverages, meals, snacks or reading materials. The same menu is available, as is outdoor dining. The lounge accommodates an increasing number of travelers flying private to OHM properties, while supporting the town. “Basically, it's a public-private partnership with the airport authority,” says Hostettler. “The space sat empty for a decade, and they wanted a restaurant or food service.” For Hostettler, it was an important amenity to add. “We wanted a better first and last experience for guests coming to the property.”

Chef Kat Caine, Director of Culinary Education and Food Forager, teaches two levels of cooking classes. Beginners learn how to make family favorites like hearty soups, mac and cheese and brownies. Knife skills is an essential class. Students slice, dice and julienne, and learn how to keep knives sharp and safe. And of course, students eat what’s cooked in class. A class on eggs Benedict— in which the chef shares her secret to poaching eggs and whipping up hollandaise—is like having a private brunch. The second level is for hobby cooks with basic skills. In Farm to Table 101, students create dishes from a market basket of seasonal, local products. Personal Chef and Sommelier Service Private chef dinners in guests’ suites have become more popular over the last year, and it’s a terrific way to take advantage of the open kitchens, where everyone gathers at the counter to watch, talk and ask questions. Chef Kat Caine tailors the menu to guests’ needs, using local, seasonal ingredients to create a gourmet, multicourse feast before their eyes. “We work with ingredients we’re excited about incorporating into our menus,” says Caine. She works closely with the farmer at organic Avondale Farm in Westerly. “The greatest part of the farm is that she grows a wide variety of heirloom vegetables,” she says. These

are supplemented with high-end ingredients like black truffles and caviar. For one dinner, Chef Kat made stuffed Maine lobsters with citrus beurre blanc. OHM's Feiler works closely with the chef and guests to create wine pairings for each course. There are several levels of pairings available. What Feiler calls the “full CWCA experience” adds sommelier service to the meal, along with the personal chef and server. Guests often ask the chef questions about equipment, like the hot water circulator used in a sous-vide technique. It cooks meat or seafood to the perfect temperature before Chef Kat gives it a final stove-top sear. To take advantage of the views and air, many guests choose to dine on their terrace or balcony. “This is a fantastic experience with a private chef. And you can learn and pick up skills to take

home,” says Caine. Private dinners are also held in the resort's Center for Wine and Culinary Arts, which seats up to 8 guests in a charming, yet elegant space.

Pond-to-Plate

Pondhouse offers new menu The Pondhouse has a new menu. The private, outdoor, interactive dining experience pairs a three-course lunch and dinner with Louis Roederer champagnes. There are two tiers, Premier and Cristal. The Premier leads to Roederer’s blanc de blanc and rosé. The Cristal gives guests an opportunity to taste a top tier champagne, and compare its balance, acidity and delicacy. The meal begins with a classic pairing of oysters and champagne. Local oysters, broiled on the Pondhouse’s

grill table until they pop open, and the personalized server tops them with a cube of flavored compound butter. Oysters are also served raw on the half shell with a champagne mignonette. House-made breads warm on the grill, ready to be spread with creamy crab dip. New Naturalist Teddy Beahm, also

known as Captain Teddy, often stops by at the beginning of the meal to welcome guests and answer questions as they take in the expansive view of the pond, shoreline birds or stars in the sky. He can tell you exactly where those oysters were raised. The first course, a salad of seasonal greens and vegetables, is grown at Hillandale Farm, a few miles away. Executive Chef Scott Cummings estimates that 75% of the meal comes from Hillandale. The next course takes away the burden of choice. Lobster, filet mignon and organic chicken—guests get all three. The lobster is slathered in citrusy yuzu butter. It cooks on the grill with skewers of filet mignon and organic chicken. Three coastal sides are served in Le Creuset enamel pots: potatoes with roasted garlic, lemon and thyme; roasted cabbage with bacon; and succotash. For dessert, Chef Cummings does a modern take on pineapple upside down cake. Grilled skewers of pineapple, an iSi 45-second

sponge cake (yes, do ask your server about the equipment and technique), housemade vanilla bean ice cream, and pineapple-kaffir caramel sauce. Heaven is now. After the meal, Captain Teddy returns to invite guests for a walk to the shoreline, looking at the real “Quonnie rocks.” He’ll even engrave initials on a rock, for guests to remember the occasion. In addition to new Pondhouse developments, the Inn’s General Manager Corinne Finn Heyl is working with Chef Cummings to further innovate the menus. “Chef Cummings is very creative, and he’s making some exciting enhancements," says Finn Heyl. “Plus, we’re offering his cuisine in off-thebeaten-path locales through new excursions.”

Outdoor Culinary Adventures

Experience elegant meals on a remote beach or private island “What’s that?” When Weekapaug Inn guests spot people having an elegant meal on an island in the middle of Quonochontaug Pond, they want to do it too. And they can. It’s just one of the private adventures guests can book with Weekapaug Inn’s new Naturalist and Director of Recreation. Captain Teddy Beahm, who took on the role when Mark Bullinger retired, is continuing the tradition of helping guests to discover local nature and engage with their surroundings. A former

marine and U.S. Coast Guard certified boat captain, Beahm joined the Inn after working at Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii. His knowledge of ecology and love for the coast make him the perfect tour guide for guests' adventures, whether it involves boating, birdwatching or beachside exploring. Captain Teddy takes the wheel of a high-speed boat designed to motor through shallow water, and steers a four-wheel Jeep off road to beautiful remote beaches. Activities can include fishing, swimming, biking and hiking. And food plays an important role, from casual bento box lunches on the beach, to elegant seated multi-course dinners with wine. “The food and beverage side is huge to me because it goes hand-in-hand with the natural world and the Rhode Island coast,” says Beahm. At sunset, the natural world gets active with birds and fish feeding. Tiki torches and lanterns light a simple, yet elegantly dressed table, surrounded by bamboo folding chairs. The settings, with their expansive views, and experiences are so wonderful, guests don’t want to leave. (Keep that in mind when you’re booking.) And another funny thing? Guests dining on their own private Island in the middle of Quonnie Pond look to the shore, and see— The Pondhouse. And they say, “What’s that? I want to try that too.” And they do.

The end of a beautiful Watch Hill day in Village Park: The salt air is filled with music from the Flying Horse Carousel and sprinkled with children’s laughter; the melody soars up and over the village on the wings of gulls, gliding down Bay Street. A line forms at the ice cream window of St. Clair Annex. Beach-goers heading for the parking lot congregate, as the yacht club prepares its signal gun. Boaters come on deck carrying drinks and air horns, while couples spread blankets on the grass. BOOM! The club gun fires; startled, the unsuspecting jump, and the harbor reverberates with the ear-piercing sound. In the words of writer Edith Wharton, it is another spectacular Watch Hill summer sunset “lagooned in gold.” The Artists of Village Park Women of vision and skill have given Watch

Hill a lasting gift of beauty. Here in Village Park lives the spirit of Chief Ninigret, depicted crouching, noodling Kwam (fish) and gazing across the Bay, enshrined in the statuary fountain by sculptor Enid Bland Yandell (18691934). The Dreamer, a sculpture by Sylvia Shaw Judson (1897-1978) atop the water fountain, captures a boy in peaceful contemplation. The subtle effects of sunset shadows upon the seascape and plantings were envisioned by prominent landscape architect and summer cottager Marian Cruger Coffin (1876-1957). The park is a historical monument to these artists and to generations of Watch Hill women. Watch Hill Improvement Society Chartered by a group of eight men in 1889, The Watch Hill Improvement Society (WHIS) facilitated a Fire District Charter and brought town water, fire hydrants, sidewalks and street lighting. The men turned the Society over to the women of the Hill in 1901, having “rendered Watch Hill a more inviting and desirable place of residence.”1 In 1996, it was renamed Watch Hill Memorial Library and Improvement Society (WHMLIS). While men pursued careers in the city, visiting for short stays, women summering at the seashore enjoyed new-found freedom, unimaginable from the subordination to patriarchal dominance and pigeon-holes of society life described in the writings of Edith Wharton and Henry James. James coined the term “new women,” emblematic of women pushing back against society-imposed limits. Although unable to hold office or vote, the women, self-proclaimed “IMPS” (from

“Improvement Society”) essentially ran Watch Hill’s quasi-municipal fire district. The Society had dirt streets oiled and boardwalks built to the club and beach. They secured year-round police presence and a jail cell; maintained the Flying Horse Carousel; sprayed for mosquitoes; eliminated sewage in the bay; and advocated for an American La France pumper and fire station after the devastating 1916 fire. The Society raised funds through donations; fête champêtre; art, fashion and pet shows; and water carnivals. They also sponsored children’s events like the Fourth of July bicycle parade. In spring 1938, a fire burned the central Sisson block, and a hurricane followed that fall. The “IMPS” were instrumental in rebuilding the community. Village Park Preservation and the Future Looking at the park’s evolution from 1889 to 1940, one can appreciate the impact of women and their role in resort community government; the arts and architecture; and the changes in American attitudes toward nature and landscape. Through the stewardship of the “IMPS;” generous female patronage; and the pioneering artists Enid Yandell, Marian Cruger Coffin and Sylvia Shaw Judson, a remarkable sisterhood has endured, and the park has survived disaster and development. Three Visionary Artists Leave their mark on historic Village Park Marian Cruger Coffin Landscape Architect

During the Great Depression, WHIS engaged trailblazing landscape architect Marian Cruger Coffin to design Village Park, including 17 Above: Marian Cruger memorial benches. Coffin at her Watch Hill Among Coffin’s home. landscape designs are Winterthur, the Henry Francis du Pont estate; New York Botanical Gardens’ rose garden; and smaller projects around Watch Hill, including those at her cottage Wendover, and The Lottery, home of Sara Means Spencer, who was instrumental in her commission.2 It was acceptable for women to design domestic gardens; however, men dominated public commissions and landscape architecture. As a pioneering professional Coffin had her challenges, writing of attending M.I.T. in 1901: “I was fired with desire to enter the Institute in spite of the fact that at the time, as noted by Martha Brookes Hutcheson [another female landscape architect] it was considered almost social suicide and distinctly matrimonial suicide, for a woman to enter any profession.” Coffin’s work was featured in The Garden Magazine, and she maintained homes in New Haven, CT, and Watch Hill. Even during the Great Depression, she was able to employ an assistant and driver.

Enid Yandell Artist

Enid Yandell, following American artists and writers to Paris on what David McCullough described as The Greater Journey, studied or worked with Lorado Taft, Auguste Rodin Above: The artist in her Paris studio with a model and Augustus from Buffalo Bill Circus. Saint-Gaudens, eventually opening her own Paris studio. She became nationally recognized for her caryatids on the Women’s Building at the Chicago Columbia Exhibition, World’s Fair of 1893; her miniature designs for Tiffany; and the Daniel Boone and Pallas Athena statutes. Her Gibson Girl sculpture “embodied America’s modern ideal women, with her new (often daring!) feministic values of self-reliance and self-assurance. All while maintaining her sense of femininity.”3 Yandell’s Chief Ninigret commission was a gift to Watch Hill by land developer Frances Canby Biddle Griscom in memory of husband Clement Acton Griscom, a shipping magnate who died in 1912. The Chief Ninigret statue—like the sachem Ninigret, who trekked throughout what is today New York, Pennsylvania and New England negotiating with tribal leaders—traveled exhaustively from Paris to Watch Hill. Chief Ninigret was re-dedicated on the south end of Village Park, then in a later park restoration to the north end of the park where it lives today.

Sylvia Shaw Judson Artist

The Dreamer, donated by Gertrude Hoy Watts (an accomplished and award-winning Above: The artist Sylvia gardener and Garden Shaw Judson Club of America member) in memory of husband Ridley Watts, was added to the park in 1940. It was commissioned by the Society from Sylvia Shaw Judson (later Sylvia Shaw Judson Haskins), known for many years first as the daughter of Chicago architect Howard Shaw. Judson, who trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, followed in Enid Yandell’s footsteps, journeying to Paris to study at the Academy Grande Chaumière with Atelier Bourdelle. Judson’s works include garden sculptures and her 1959 monument of Mary Dyer, a martyred Quaker. In 1960, First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy acquired a second casting of The Little Gardener for the White House Rose Garden. After Judson’s death, her Bird Girl, photographed by John David Leigh II, gained fame on the cover of John Berendt’s 1994 book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and in the movie directed by Clint Eastwood. intimate groups of six to 12. Menus reflect a passion for seasonal, locally raised food and Lexington’s agricultural community. The optional pairing of Château d’Esclans rosés includes world-class wines. The vineyard in Provence started the rosé renaissance with Whispering Angel, the popular blush-hued, dry and refreshing wine. The rosés that accompany each course are poured into a curated selection of Bacarrat crystal glasses. Four raised garden beds filled with herbs, vegetables and edible flowers surround a big wood farmhouse table. Pale pink accents, inspired by the wines, appear in

tableware, pillows and throws. In the evening, strings of Edison lights cast a gentle light and candles flicker on the table. It is a most magical space. Whispering Angel Culinary Garden is also available for private interactive cooking instruction, complete with tasting menus.

grounds, the meal begins with tiered silver trays filled with sweet and savory treats, housebaked pastries, fresh, seasonal fruit, local cheese and charcuterie, and shellfish. The first plated course offers salads, clam chowder or lobster fritters. Main course options include plated 48-Hour Brisket Hash, Eggs Benedict, Rory’s Buttermilk Pancakes, roasted salmon and the popular Hastings Burger. The tiered silver platters return with dessert, an array of mini treats baked by pastry chef Shayna Shaw. They change with the season, these adorable little cheesecakes, chocolate mousse, and fruit and berry tarts. And cookies, “Guests love it when cookies are decorated for the season,” says Pérez Kennealy. To drink, a glass of sparkling wine comes with brunch. Guests may order additional bubbles or bloodies, including the traditional Hastings Bloody, and a new spicy kicker made with jalapeño vodka, steeped in-house. Drinks can be ordered to go, with the brunch. “The thing about brunch is, there’s always someone at the table who wants breakfast and there’s always someone who wants lunch, says Pérez Kennealy. “We make them both happy.”

Weekly Seasonal Menu

Town Meeting Bistro Executive Chef Michael Arnold is creating weekly seasonal threecourse dinners. Available for dining-in or taking-out, the menu has guest favorites like clam chowder and lobster fritters—and changes it up by exploring the cuisines and cultures that make Lexington’s community so strong, including Pérez Kennealy’s Puerto Rican and Jewish heritage. The choice of three appetizers, entrées and dessert will incorporate the freshest seasonal produce from local farms and fisheries, with lots of choices for vegetarians. “It’s fun and it gives our guests something to look forward to,” says Pérez Kennealy. Regulars can still order beloved signature dishes from Town Meeting Bistro’s bar menu. Locals are known for coming in the same day every week for their preferred dish, like the roasted wild king salmon. And who can blame them? “We really make sure that our loyal

Culinary Immersion Weekend

Each month, Pérez Kennealy hosts a Culinary Immersion Weekend at the Inn. Designed for a group of family or friends, up to eight people, it offers 20 hours of instruction, visits to local farms, meals prepared by their own hands, and a tasting and pairing menu prepared by Executive Chef Michael Arnold. Pérez Kennealy shares the techniques she

learned at Le Cordon Bleu in London, from knife skills to the building blocks of classic cuisine. Check-in is at noon Friday, and the guests dive into their first cooking session, simmering vegetables, aromatics and bones into stocks, the foundation of the soups, gravies and sauces they will later create. After a break for lunch, Pérez Kennealy teaches how to roast chicken, beef and vegetables, and to pan-sear salmon. The group makes three kinds of potatoes: roasted, mashed and sweet. Friday evening, they partake in a dinner party they’ve helped cook. “I teach them how to do

all the prep so they can enjoy their own dinner parties,” says Pérez Kennealy. Guests begin the meal with a glass of Whispering Angel rosé. Saturday morning, they start with eggs, an important part of culinary techniques, cracking them into bowls and hot pans, to fry, scramble or transform into a fluffy omelet. Last night’s roasted beef and vegetables become the basis for breakfast hash. And Pérez Kennealy teaches guests the secret to Rory’s Pancakes, an Inn favorite created by her teenage son. After feasting on the three-course breakfast they’ve learned to cook, guests set out on an

Each month, the Inn at Hastings Park partners with a local nonprofit for a fundraising dinner. Whether on-site or as a virtual event where guests pick up meals to go, Pérez Kennealy and her staff design three-course menus that include signature drinks. (A special sangria for a Puerto Rican-themed meal.) Half of the proceeds go to the nonprofit. Beneficiaries have included MAZON, a group dedicated to ending hunger. “It’s a way for us to get out into the community and help struggling nonprofits,” says Pérez Kennealy. Virtual Cooking Classes

agrarian tour, visiting two farms where the Inn sources ingredients. They visit Wilson Farm, a family farm since the 1800s, which grows a bounty of greens, vegetables, tomatoes and corn. At Codman Farm in Lincoln, heritage breeds of chickens and pigs are raised by sustainable methods. After a tour, guests enjoy a ploughman’s lunch of local cheeses and charcuterie, packed in a handmade Peterboro picnic basket. Back at the hotel, the group can relax over afternoon tea, a tribute to Pérez Kennealy’s training in England. In the evening,

the participants resume their role as guests and enjoy the chef’s multi-course tasting, served with pairings of distilled or brewed spirits. Sunday morning’s last lessons focus on brunch, making short crust for quiches, learning salads and vinaigrettes, as well as what Pérez Kennealy describes as a “straightforward cake,” with a variety of glazes. The Culinary Immersion Weekend has become popular with guests, as tourism within 50 miles of home surges in popularity. Each weekend event highlights a seasonal theme.

With families unable to travel to spend holidays together, Pérez Kennealy works with hosts to design menus, and organizes delivery of ingredients to each guest’s door, with an instruction booklet outlining a few prep steps. Then the guests join an interactive online cooking lesson that leads to a delicious dinner. She sets up the Zoom, teaches the class, and then steps off when the time comes for guests to sit down to enjoy dinner together. She’s organized a virtual event for six families, and for corporate groups in lieu of on-site team building. “We so want you to be here with us,” says Pérez Kennealy, “but if you can’t get here, we can bring the experience to you, and work with you virtually.”

So, we have complete blackout rooms that you can open to the outdoors and be immersed in nature. You can choose day or night conditions.” There is also a dedicated area just off the spa where guests in the middle of treatments can enjoy a meal from the new Hilltop Café without entering the restaurant or changing out of their bathrobes. Hilltop Café serves breakfast and lunch daily. Its menu focuses on light meals such as salads, sandwiches and vegetarian dishes, with a juice and wellness bar for smoothies and more. Guests dining in the café can see into the kitchen through a glass wall, further heightening the culinary experience. Those wanting a different ambience can choose The Preserve’s Townhomes on the Green, which are at the heart of the resort next to the swimming pool, golf course and other amenities. “They’re a little more contemporary with two or three bedrooms,” says Hostettler. For the ultimate luxury stay, signature Laurel Ridge homes offer spaciousness in five distinct configurations. Yet another option are The Preserve’s more secluded tiny homes, Cozy Cabins, which are about 500 to 1,500 square feet apiece and located in the property’s Blueberry Hill nature area. Hostettler describes the cottages as “rugged and elegant, like ski cottages in Aspen,” and ideal for couples. “All of these units are for sale,” says Hostettler. “They can be placed back into a rental program by the owner with the resort. You can essentially buy it and put it back into the rental program. You use it when you’re there, and when you’re not there, you split the revenue with the resort.” Guests who enjoy staying in any of these residences at The Preserve also can become members of the property, with multiple types of membership available. A Clays membership at The Preserve provides access to the property’s 19-station sporting clays course, along with use of the seasonal pool, Double Barrel Kitchen and gun range. s the Group Meetings & Special Events Manager for Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn, Lauren DiStefano is no stranger to wedding day curveballs—hurricanes, blizzards, windstorms, she’s seen it all. So, when a global pandemic threatened to upend the resort’s 2020 wedding season, she took it all in stride. “The first couple of months were crazy,” she says. “But then we were given a set of concrete rules to follow. I found that very supportive and enlightening. After that we were okay.” For the two couples featured here, the process was more than okay. Though each had to make some adjustments to their original vision, in the end, thanks to DiStefano and her team, they got the wedding of their dreams—and then some.

D

akota D’Amato and Nick Olsen met three years ago at a Halloween party when they were both living and working in Austin, Texas. Even then they knew they would eventually move back to the East Coast, to be closer to their families. So, it was only fitting that when it came time to plan their 2020 nuptials, the couple immediately thought of Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, where Nick’s family had a summer home. “We were both very adamant about it,” says Dakota. “We are laid-back people, and the Inn has a homey feel that appeals to us.” They envisioned a weekend affair with 200-plus guests and all the trimmings, including a 10-piece band from Boston. They chose October 3, booked the entire Inn, contracted the vendors and sent out

invitations. And then—in March, Rhode Island went into lockdown. “That’s when everything started going up in smoke,” says Nick. “We went back and forth. We’ll call it off, we won’t call it off. At one point, we threw up our hands and Lauren said, ‘I got it.’” Indeed, with Lauren as a steadying influence, the couple moved forward with a modified version. By then, most vendors had been released and new ones had to be hired. "I contacted people I knew who would deliver a really great experience,” says DiStefano. Friday evening’s rehearsal dinner set the tone with a casual clambake at the Weekapaug Golf Club. The next day, backdropped by an autumn-hued floral arch, the couple exchanged vows on the Guest Lawn. After enjoying cocktails and a raw bar by the pool, guests made

their way into the tent, a collaboration between Ryan Designs and Broadview Florists. The bridal party and spouses were seated at a long wooden farm table, while smaller round tables were set for groups of six. The couple had fun with the dessert menu, which featured mini apple pies, chocolate mousse shooters, cookie dough lollipops and apple cider donuts. One Love Band kept the mood upbeat; for the after-party OHM Food Truck showed up with breakfast snacks. “The whole weekend was perfect,” says Dakota. Adds Nick: “For me the best part was everybody saying how much fun they were having. Everyone had been locked in their homes for months, and they still turned out for us. The Inn helped make it all happen in a safe, yet very memorable way.”

S

oon after they got engaged in 2018, Jonathan and Taylor started planning their June 2020 destination wedding in the Bahamas. “We had been going to Harbor Island every year since we first met,” says Taylor. “We fell in love with the island’s aesthetic and pink sand beaches.” In March, just as invitations were about to go out, COVID-19 shut the island down. “At first we thought we would postpone, but then we realized this virus wasn’t going away quickly,” says Jonathan. He immediately called Ocean House, a Watch Hill landmark he had known from childhood and where he and Taylor had their first local date. “We loved Ocean House and had already talked to Lauren about doing a post-wedding party for our local friends there,” he says. “That turned into our wedding.” Both men have a

background in fashion and design, and they formulated a new vision to match their change in venue. “We wanted to incorporate a hint of the islands, while paying a nod to the New England setting. Lauren got it immediately,” says Taylor. “They were inspired by Ralph Lauren and that upscale causal American lifestyle,” she says. “We really pulled from that.” On Friday night, guests enjoyed cocktails and croquet on the South Lawn, before meandering down to the beach for a traditional lobster bake. Before finding their socially distanced seats at the ceremony on Saturday,

as their best friend, Chelsea, officiated. Afterward, everyone gathered on the Seaside Terrace for Veuve Clicquot champagne served in chic orange flutes. A seated dinner followed, with tables arrayed beneath a Ryan Designs canopy of hanging basket lanterns edged with little white lights. Each table sported a fun blue and white ikat linen; Hana Floral centerpieces were a mix of peony and hydrangea accented with palm and monstera. A trio, featuring the resort's own pianist, Al Copley, played background music throughout the dazzling meal, capped off by a three-tiered

guests stopped for welcome bags filled with hand sanitizer, his and her face masks, and macarons from Sift Bake Shop. Jonathan’s mother walked the couple’s dog, William, down the aisle, and the couple exchanged vows

carrot cake. “He does fun upbeat oldies and jazz standards,” says Jonathan. “It made the reception feel like a big dinner party, intimate and festive.”
