OANA RUXANDRA MOGA /ARCHITECT

I am fortunate enough to have met people who shaped me into an empathic, correct, sensitive and grateful person. These traits, together with critical thinking, make dealing with complex societal challenges highly enjoyable. We should not, however, take ourselves too seriously... “I don’t tip. No, I don’t believe in it.[...] I don’t tip because society says I have to.[...] I’ll tip if someone really deserves a tipping, if they really put forth the effort, I’ll give them something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds.[...] You know what this is? It’s the world’s smallest violin playing just for the.................." (Mr. Pink in ‘Reservoir Dogs’;1992)

WORK EXPERIENCE De Zwarte Hond

8/2016-02/2019

04-12/2017

The experience at De Zwarte Hond was defined by diversity in projects and people. I supported the design teams by defining concepts, sketching, making drawings, building models, doing research and presenting the results in a clear and concise manner. This chapter shows part of my work in their team.

The question of keeping and transforming or demolishing old buildings is raised often, in all cities that wish to use space in a modern and efficient manner. This is the case of the project resulting in the analysis above: a plot situated at the crossing of two highly circulated streets, encompassing a building from the 70’s. COLLECTIVE LIVING

Stefan Mihaileanu 34 and Popa Soare 57 Bucharest

Us humans, consider the house to be the natural, unique space of spiritual relaxation, regardless of the age, culture or geographical confinements. A place of vulnerability, self-reflection and individual recomposure, necessary for functioning – once again – when returning to the outside world.

Each person has, over the course of its lifetime, periods of time during which they experience a strange numbness, as if they have lost the ability to observe, analyse and feel; a time when life simply seems to be passing by. This state, however, seems to diminish as the mental, imaginary space of “home starts to progressively overlap with the physical space of our dwellings.

A plot with an irregular shape, situated in a heterogenous, protected area

opens towards two streets with small houses and interwar appartment blocks;

three blindwalls on the site and a historical monument act as an immediate neighbour.

How can we create true homes, while remaining sensitive to the tissue they are built in?

What should especially motivate architectural projects that propose a potential ‘home’, is finding the balance between imposing -as a form of assistance -and leaving enough space for expression to each individual. But how do we respond to a traumatized tissue in full but gradual change? How are we then creating communities, considering that ‘in a constantly dynamic society, our habitat is the only space in which we can fully understand who we are and the connections on which our family are based on?’ (B. RÉGIMONT: ‘Dites-moi comment est votre maison, je vous dirai qui vous êtes’)

When it comes to an architectural project, what you choose to analyze has a direct impact on the final product. The place where you stand is governed by a set of intrinsic laws that must represent the origin of any new building wishing to fit in the environment. These rules must be integrated and reinterpreted so that the new creation can take a step forward and develop a harmonious habitat.

ARCHITECTURAL INSERTION in a protected area Bucharest

Many picturesque areas in Bucharest were destroyed during Ceausescu’s regime. They have been replaced by large boulevards, lined by housing blocks and meant to hide any trace of the old architecture. Today, the two architectural types manage to coexist, forming a chaotic and surprising city. The project site is situated near the historical center, in the immediate vicinity of Lady Balasa Church and the park of the Bucharest Law Court. The function is not imposed.

I found those left-behind houses to be very quiet, although they are just a few steps from the boulevard, protected by the blocks of flats. A key element of the project was the park: coherently designed and widely used, I decided the project should support its presence. The new building does not aim to use land intensely, but wishes to maintain that ‘respiro’ from the built area in the existing park. The Hill is a project meant to bring people together, but does not want to activate the area during the night. The main function is a museum, with indoor workshop areas for artists and an external temporary exhibition space covered by grass.

RESEARCH INCUBATOR

Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest

The Technical University of Civil Engineering is rather unknown to the public, despite serious research being carried out in the field. Not only the merit for innovation is not acknowledged, but nobody knows where the building is located. This was the first aspect we considered in our approach, when we were asked to create a design for a new research center and new educational facility. This project should be placed on the map of Bucharest, and its design must express the power of those people.

PARKING

Moreover, with our analysis, we discovered that researchers and artists have similar needs: a creation space, freedom of movement, the freedom to express themselves, access to varied information and a context in which they feel valued and recognized. Inspired by the presence of the park that is shared with the University of Law, we decided on the curved forms that mimic body movements. Besides the relationship with the park, the curved project creates interdisciplinary work cores, in both the research center and the university. On the other hand, we did not ignore entirely the traditional working places – the rectangular walled laboratories. We felt that this project should do more than stick to a strict minimum, it should go a step forward, so that the people will feel as if they belong. Regarding the street image, we chose to deliver an alternative, rectangular one, through a second-skin mesh facade, that fits better with the blocks in the neighborhood. Moreover, it is transparent enough to incite exploration. The height of the entire project fits the height the Opera House building, situated on the left side.
