ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Pu THE HOUSE OF MUSIC Masters of Science Thesis Year: Location: Supervisors:

July 2015 Cairo, Egypt David Palterer & Heba Safey El-Deen

This project stands as the practical example of the theoretical approach that was discussed throughout the thesis. Architectural identity in Cairo, how did it disappear, and how to revitalize it or create a new one that suits the city and its inhabitants. Azbakiyya, the chosen area, the melting pot of Islamic and neoclassical architecture, the lake and leisure place in the medieval times, the princely garden and center of music in the modern times, now completely decayed and deserted. The project is to revitalize the area, designing a project following architectural features which speaks for the Cairene society, serve its needs, respects the architectural legacy of the city and getting advantages of experiences we get from it, and pursues architecture in the rest of the world. The aim is to design a project which can be a seed that can be developed into a new architectural identity for the city.

The Lake: Marking the borders of the former lake, we start understanding what should be demolished in order to retrieve it. After marking buildings which has historical value, we reach to the final shape of the new lake

The Park: Islamic water gardens usually consist of many islands of green areas, carved in a big paved platform, connected together with small canals. Using the same concept in our project with converting the used materials. The big platform will be our lake instead of the paved one. The design of the project then consists of some islands that will host the different functions in the project, as well as the gardens that will be added or will be restored from the ruins that are existing nowadays. The lines of the islands are derived formally from the grid of the surrounding urban pattern aiming the project will be a window towards the historical city.

Pu DESIGN WITHIN THE HERITAGE Masters of Science 4thsemester project Year: Location: Collaborators:

July 2014 Mantova, Italy Amir Moshtaghi, Ana Paez Batija, Elham Eslamian

The old abandoned fish market designed by Giulio Romano has a very special location looking to the canal in Mantova. The general theme of the project was to preserve and reuse the building and its extensions for a function related to food. The main concept of the project is exhibiting local food products and how it is made in the main exhibition area, then the visitor will have the ability to go on to enjoy some meals made by the same restaurants who are exhibiting their products, and even by non cooked products of the same exhibited ones to have for their own kitchen use.

Pu MUSEUM OF FREEDOM Masters of Science 3rdsemester project Year: Location: Collaborators:

February 2014 Mantova, Italy Ana Paez Batija, Elham Eslamian

The exhibition shows different kinds of art works and old objects which express different kinds of freedom, freedom of worship, freedom of speech, freedom of sexual preference and freedom of mind, which opposes the religious attitude of limiting religion, since the exhibition is taking place in an old church. The area is divided into two main parts, the pursuit of freedom and freedom expressions. The area is divided by vertical bars which are installed straight and close to each other to give the visitor the feeling of enclosure at the area of the pursuit of freedom. The bars starts to fade and torn apart while the visitor is going on to feel the freedom at the area of freedom expressions.

Re THE HOUSE OF GARDENS Masters of Science 1st Semester Project Year: Location:

February 2013 Mantova, Italy

The context of the city of Mantova, around the project area is full of medieval houses, where each owner has his own inner-yard with a garden. The concept of the project was locating gardens for each apartment owners even if it’s not a medieval housing. It’s encouraging to keep some of the essential traditions of the old architecture of the city in the contemporary architecture. You can find some of these gardens are carved in the facade of the building

Re LI LONG HOUSES TAP Design Workshop Year: Location: Collaborators:

July 2014 Shanghai, China Yujia Jiang

The project was focusing on one of the Li long housings in Shanghai. The aim is to improve life quality and increase residents capacity with maximum 2 floors addition in the building’s heights. While surveying the area and our case study house, we found that most of the houses are really hot from inside without any ventilation as well as the presence of air conditioning unit for almost every room. Also we found out that people gather outside of their houses at unprepared areas, since they have this culture and cannot be enclosed in their own houses. Our main concept of the design is creating a main pathew in the middle of the building that provides natural ventilation for all the spaces, along with creating facing terraces looking inside the pathew to provide communication between people living in the same building.

Ur MERGING THE MARGINS Masters of Science 3rd Semester Project Year: Location: Collaborators:

February 2014 Reggio Emillia, Italy Ana Paez Batija, Elham Eslamian

Reggio Emillia is a small city which happen to have one big railway station for high speed train. The project’s aim is to help the city grows to the scale of the importance of the railway station. For that we studied the different urban grids and fabrics of the area. We found a strange mixture of grids and uses in the area where the connection between them is really poor and not helping the city to grow in the right way. The main strategy of the project is locating margins between different grids and help solving it. We zoomed-in in one study case where we can find a margin between industrial and agricultural area. Our concept was to break the obvious line which separating them and bring parts of each side to the other. Our main design element was concrete decks which link the two areas and can be used for automobile and pedestrian uses.

Different Urban Fabric Grids

Areas Of intervention After studying the different grids and relationships between them, we found problems of expansion caused by margins between each different pattern. We chose two different kinds of margins, industrial - agricultural, and residential - agricultural to show our intervention example that should be repeated in the rest of the problematic margins in the area.

Ind FLOATING Furniture Design Excercise Year: Location:

August 2016 Cairo, Egypt

The aim was to create a set of furniture that appears to be floating. It was achieved by dividing every piece into two main elements, the structure and the body. The structure is designed to be made as minimal as possible using very transparent polymer. The body was designed to look heavy and rigid. Using those two elements in different pieces helped achieving the feeling of the floating furniture.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS

Pu OYA LOUNGE Year: Location: Company:

January 2012 Cairo, Egypt IVY

The building was a residential villa in Muhandessin neighborhood in Cairo. The task was to re-design the building to host a restaurant with all its services. The design didn’t take long time, yet a lot of design decisions were changed and made during construction due to the inaccurate survey. Construction took 7 months since we received the site till we finally delivered it. The design mainly depends on material selection and lighting system. The main concern in the design was delivering something beautiful that suits the customers without using some deep concept or looking towards the context.

Pu MOSQUE Year: Location: Company:

January 2009 Tripoli, Libya Centroid

This building is a part of a big urban and architectural project for 500 residential units with its services. The mosque is located in the services core, the land of the mosque is circular to allow freedom in choosing the building’s orientation towards Qibla. In the design we tried to reach to an oriental atmosphere using contemporary elements and materials.

Re RESIDENTIAL PROTOTYPE Year: Location: Company:

May 2017 Cairo, Egypt 5 Degrees

Prima is an international jewellery brand originated in Thailand, and has many branches in the middle east. Working on design with an existing identity gives some limitations in the creative process of the design, yet givesa challenge to come up with ideas and designs that differs in its aesthetic, yet simillar in its identity.

In CHILI BUZZ Year: Location: Company:

In CARPACIAO COFFEE HOUSE Year: Location: Company:

March 2012 Cairo, Egypt IVY

The project is designing the interior of a coffee shop located in the food court in Cairo Festival City. For the client’s satisfaction, we used formally the elements of the logo in our design, as we used the flower of the logo in the pattern of the ceiling drawing it using fiber sticks with different length handing from the ceiling. Also we used the shape of the first letter of the logo to create the shape of the bar.

In RESIDENTIAL VILLA - LAKEVIEW RESIDENCES Year: Location: Company:

June 2017 Cairo, Egypt 5 Degrees

Designing a residential space always get affected by the client directly, unlike commercial spaces that get affected by the brand rather than the likes and dislikes of the owner. The client of this villa likes modern minimal designs, yet he had instructed that at the basement floor, a space should be dedicated to become an apartment with a small garden for rental purpose. That has gave us a chance to put our thoughts in making the creative process dedicated to serve that casue. Designing the villa exactly like the client wanted, yet we had the chance to make the design of the apartment warmer, yetwith cool colours, and homey like, to be closer to the common taste, as to compete well in the rental market.
