AMMAN COURTHOUSE OF APPEALS this project is a juxtaposition of a conventional rectilinear form penetrated by a fluid organic form to convey the story of our time-place related form of justice versus the absolute, divine, justice that we aspire to replicate or practice. site is located on newly-paved abdun corridor, dividing the district of abdun and the district of hilal, making it the joint between the old and new, as well as equally accessible from all parts of amman governorate

USER CONFIGURATION a courthouse is a place where multiple types of users come together in harmonic configuration that must be handled with care.
SPACIAL LAYOUTS courtrooms is where all types of zones come together in a trial, where three judges lead the session, inmates are secured through private access, and civilians enter through a prefunction.
clerk office is where lawsuits are managed in files and sent to judges for trial setting. clerk offices are mainly composed of a big office space containing a room for the department head, a records room, and direct access to judge chambers.
GRAPH GRAMMAR to have a better understanding of the courthouse organization, a theoretical model is needed to express the relations between entities. each activity is represented through a node, each accessibility relation is expressed through a line. adjacent nodes can be combined into one component and each component can be collapsed into nodes.

THE TRIAL - FRANZ KAFKA THE TRIAL is a novel written by Franz Kafka published in 1925. it tells the story of an ambitious, worldly young bank official named Joseph K. is arrested by two warders although he has done nothing wrong. K. is indignant and outraged. The morning happens to be that of his thirtieth birthday. One year later, on the morning of his thirty-first birthday, two warders again come for K. They take him to a quarry outside of town and kill him in the name of the Law. K. lets them. The Trial is the chronicle of that intervening year of K.’s case, his struggles and encounters with the invisible Law and the untouchable Court. K decides to dismiss his lawyer and handle his own defense, because he is innocent and has nothing to hide. As some commentators have noted, it has, in parts, the quality of revealed truth; as such it is ultimately unresolvable-a mirror for any sectarian reading. Was K guilty because of his ignorance of the law? Was the law found to achieve justice or create injustice? Is our understanding of justice relative? Does absolute justice exist?
BINARITY OF JUSTICE: CASE OF SAID NURSI does absolute justice exist or not? It may be argued that where absolute justice is impossible to realise, it is only reasonable to expect that the concept of partial or relative justice be invoked. Nursi defines justice as either absolute and relative. culture and justice have always gone hand in hand. A person who lived in the Middle Ages thought it to be perfectly just to cut off the hand of a thief. In modern times we consider ourselves more civilized, and put people in jail or fine them for stealing. As time and culture changed, so does perception of absolute justice. REALISATION OF ABSOLUTE JUSTICE nursi argues that absolute justice can only be realised by God, his justice must be perfect while theirs is imperfect, and his must be impartial, while theirs is partial. Inasmuch as the justice of God may be considered as it exists in himself, or as it is manifested towards his creatures, a distinction has been made in it as viewed in these aspects, into the absolute and relative justice of God as reflected in humans. By absolute justice what we mean is that rectitude of the divine nature, in consequence of which God is infinitely righteous in himself. having said that, it’s fairly arguable that absolute justice of god may be represented by the geometry of his creations.

SACRED GEOMETRY sacred geometry ascribes symbolic and sacred meanings to certain geometric shapes and certain geometric proportions. It is associated with the belief that a god or God is the geometer of the world. according to Stephen Skinner, the study of sacred geometry has its roots in the study of nature, and the mathematical principles at work therein. Many forms observed in nature can be related to geometry; for example, the chambered nautilus grows at a constant rate and so its shell forms a logarithmic spiral to accommodate that growth without changing shape. Also, honeybees construct hexagonal cells to hold their honey. These and other correspondences are sometimes interpreted in terms of sacred geometry and considered to be further proof of the natural significance of geometric forms.

THE METAPHOR OF ABSOLUTE JUSTICE AND SACRED GEOMETRY there is nothing much that can be done to the judicial system through architecture except to convey an informative message about the story of absolute justice and relative justice. sacred geometry has ever been a sought after for architectural composition throughout the ages and it acts as such a good metaphor for the case of justice and it’s reflections, it was used as an architectural tool to express the application of the concept in a conventional, superficial way versus the “absolute” application that was taken to a new dimension rather than only on layout and space arrangement.

SITE AND MASTER PLAN the site has a slope of 50 meters and an area of 90,000m 2 whereas the vast majority of it is composed of red soil pausing a challenge of preservation and use of much-needed green surfaces in a city of stone and concrete. courthouse function was mainly divided into three levels that embrace the site’s slope and arrange privacy by level difference, -5.00 level is for clerks and legal procedures as well as the cross-programmed showcase that tells the story of the building. +0.00 is entry level and leads to criminal courtrooms as well as the mega courtroom. +5.00 level leads to civil courtrooms as well as judges chambers and their related function.

APPROACH AND ENTRY courthouse entrances and circulation are demanding in terms of hierarchy as they were carefully laid and arranged throughout the master plan placing the main entrance for the public right on the +0.00 level (+24.00 relative to the lowest point on site) creating a plaza entrance and drop-off lowered by an underground public parking that does not reach the building premises for security reasons.

MAIN ATRIUM - STAIRCASE after entering the courthouse at the +0.00 level and getting inspected by security checkpoint users can either descend to lower levels to follow up with legal procedures or ascend to the higher levels if they have an appointment for trial. Users maneuver through the sculptural staircase taking them around displayed content that conveys the perspectives of absolute and relative justice. Staircase has two hanged platforms at different levels as the staircase was built on sacred geometry principles.

COURTROOMS PREFUNCTION - THE SLIT as the parametric shape takes it’s curve starting from the entrance forming the main multi-story height atrium, it converges then slits into a narrow path covered by a skylight glass structure that lets in a narrow linear ray of light that illuminates courtroom entrances. The main library and attorney meeting rooms can be accessed through the slit. The slit ends with tilted inwards a cobble stone wall that marks the boundary of the mountain penetrated by the slit leading to a mega courtroom underground.

COURTROOMS courtrooms are accessed through a cantilevered bridge, the interior is very similar to the geometry of the slit with two tilted smooth walls that meet at the top with a skylight that lits the inside with dramatic lighting. Sides of the room are illuminated by a warm ambient light that washes the curving walls. Furniture used is as plain and simple as can be, composted of fine wood, leather and stainless steal that give a very formal and humane look to the interiors. Courtrooms were designed on sacred geometry principles as shown in the diagram below

JUDGES SPACE judges were granted a special plaza entrance and a large atrium-lounge communal space covered with skylight illuminating the entire area and creating volumes of interaction. The formal language of the judges spaces features grand materials like marble and reflective surfaces. Judges offices are divided by a double- loaded corridors and are lit by internal courtyards giving privacy and sufficient daylighting & greenery to achieve a healthy work environment for the judiciary staff.

SITE AND MASTER PLAN site is located in marj-alhamam area, on na’ur road specifically, with a total area of 500,000 km 2 it is surrounded by four streets of mixed uses from residential to commercial. the master plan’s design approach is to provide private entrances for each of the user groups of the stadium ranging from stadium staff, media personnel, teams and their associates, vip, and spectators. level difference is utilized in serving this purpose. stadi u m

MAIN CONCOURSE main concourse is designed to withstand crowds’ rushing before and after the game, as tiers were divided into 3 parts that slows down the crowds coming from the upper parts allowing spectators to evacuate orderly.

ENTRY VISTA tiers were specifically designed in order not to block view of those who enter the stadium and not to break their visual continuity, allowing them to keep up with the match even when they’re not on their seats and giving the handicapped the ease of mobility and providing them with a great view.

FACADOLOGY facade is composed mainly of three parts, the outer skin, curtain wall, and the exposed roof structure in which every element contributes to definition of space and gradation of out-in space. materials used are white alucobond panels and white steel allowing the shade to define the layering of facade.

STRUCTURAL STUDY the structural system can be considered as a rigid steel system having joints that have moment resistance, unlike a frame space structural system that have only axial forces on members. rigidity is the property of a structure that it does not bend or flex under an applied force. the opposite of rigidity is flexibility. in structural rigidity theory, structures are formed by collections of objects that are themselves rigid bodies, often assumed to take simple geometric forms such as straight rods (line segments), with pairs of objects connected by flexible hinges. the main concern in a rigid structural system is achieving knees (or joints) that can withstand a huge amount of moment.

UNDERGROUND DEN originally a student center located in the university of jordan. it takes the form of a cave to tackle students’ sense of topophilia (a strong sense of place, which often becomes mixed with the sense of cultural identity among certain people and a love of certain aspects of such a place)

CONTEXT site is located at the center of the university and is mainly composed of three parts, an existing building (milkbar), a small public plaza, and a slope forest behind them. the milkbar is a folk restaurant connected to to a service building but has distinct entrances which makes the buildings disconnected in terms of use.
HIDEOUT IMPLEMENTATION hideout building was placed among the forest’s trees, behind the milkbar restaurant for concealment.
CONNECTING ELEMENTS opened direct entrance from and to the plaza for better indoor/outdoor connection.

VIEW, VOLUME, AND STAIRS the duplex apartments were designed in orientation that best provides a spectacular view of amman suburbs whereas two living rooms gain advantage of this double volume that creates such an interesting space to maneuver through. stairs steps were designed on a single steel beam stringer to have minimal obstruction of sight and space cleanliness which also gives the contemporary feeling to the interior. the facade of this volume is made of glass fixations that grant a vertical panorama.

HAFR AL-BATEN MALL GATES owned by othaim company, hafr al-baten mall was proposed to have casual restaurants set on each of it’s gates and on both sides. the client’s wishes also are to completely cover the main mall walls with fair faced concrete.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY The building’s stair-like shape is a response to the strong visual corridor defined by the surface parking-roundabout-the sea; a series of large terraces shift to clear the view and act as an extension to the central open space. These large terraces capitalize on central open space; they multiply the interaction platforms, offer unobstructed views to both the sea and the city, and above all, they anchor the building in the skyline. The building morphology and massing is the result of juxtaposing three inverted U-shaped masses: • The ground floor mass celebrates the city; a large canopy extends the adjacent street and create THE AQABA sidewalk coffee shop SERVICED terraces. It is alsoNON a porous mass that let the passers-by perceive the sea. • The first floor mass celebrates align the back elevation before joining the ROOFthe sea; a series of small strategically-located private terraces TERRACE main large terrace that enjoys open views to both the city and the sea. • A second large terrace extends the first floor’s creating an animated rooftop worth of a coastal city like no other in Aqaba.

STARFISH BOUTIQUE HOTEL The site is part of Aqaba South Beach with an area of 3,070 sq. m. It actually houses the Starfish diving club. The developer intends to demolish part of the existing buildings and build a 32-room boutique hotel capitalizing on the site’s direct access to the beach and his long knowhow in the hospitality business. The development is bound to consecrate Hotel to become the corner stone of an attractive welldesigned well-controlled well-maintained public beach for that is the only way that guarantees a feasible development for the developer and a sustainable beach for Aqaba. The developer not only intends to develop the beach, install seating and playing areas, kiosks, and an outdoor gymnasium, but to upgrade the front parking lot. The Hotel will upgrade the existing all-day restaurant, add a Turkish bath, a specialty restaurant with a grand terrace overlooking the Gulf as well as the 32 rooms. A generous landscaped garden with a swimming pool will extend to the public beach and to the sea where outdoor gymnasium, kiosks, kids’ playing areas will be maintained and supervised by the hotel ensuring a high-level service.

AL MATAL HIGHLAKE COMMERCIAL BUILDING this commercial building is located in al matal highlake resort, with and sloped site that is proceeded by the lake’s beach from the back and the main ring road on the front. the building is composed of repetition of modular triangles that create interesting terraces and shaded areas for enjoyable experiences.
