This project is targetting one of Egypt’s major problems which is the social gap between the social hierarchy, which led to the excistense of two completely different cultures with different backgrounds , different educational and thinking backgrond, completely different ethics and manners. This project aim is integrating the social gaps and creating a common platform between the new generations, and between the rich and the poor, in an initiative to minimizie the gap.

Assistant Prof. Monique Jütter in collaboration with Mariam Ashraf

This project was in this 6th semester housing course, the main purpose of the project was to make an urban analysis to all the districts in Cairo, and study its urban problems through a complete research of all the urban aspects and suggest a solution for it. Every group of two people had to pick a specific plot and work on it for the whole semester.

The flow of people in El Nozha street through out the day is very high and condensed, the car traffic is a massive problem in the street because of the cars parking 2 rows parrallel to the street because of the high demand on the amount of restaurants and beverges stores in the street lefting the main road with only one lane and a very condensed sidewalk. Recently the railway line in the mid-sidwalk of the street is closed. The side walk is 15 meters wide and it is not used completely.

Maadi Degla

R E A DA B L E S PROJECTDESCRIBTION

44

The aim was to develop a housing project a long the closed railway line in Maadi Degla. Every group had to pick a 10x10 meters plot to design a small 3 storeys house on, considering the attached building next to it. Recently the area is one of the most demanded places in Maadi and it never satisfied the people demands because of the shortage of house supplies.

R E A DA B L E S MAINCONCEPT

46

F O R M G E N E R AT I O N

My plot was the first plot in the house chain so it had 3 elevations, the form is generated through cutting the right angel sides of my building to create 4 elevations to overlook all the surrounding streets and to act as a main elevation of the whole project.

The occupant is a 37 years old writer, who has several published books about various topics. His main passion is writing and his aim is to encourage people to read more, so the ground floor of this building acts as a coffeeshop and an open library with various kind of books that gives people the chance to read while having their daily coffee. while the first floor is his private space for work and living. The second floor is the sleeping area.
