KA-CARE Omrania & Associates (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) Paid Competition KA-CARE Design Architect / Urban Designer Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. King Abdullah City for Atomic Energy & Research (KACARE) is located to the west of Riyadh on the Towaiq Upland Conservation Area with an area of approximately 60 km². It is the first major step in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s initiative to diversify its energy mix. Taking part in this competition is a momentous role in shaping the future of the Kingdom. Our task is to accommodate not merely a new facility, which will represent Saudi Arabia’s response to this challenge, but to do so in a way that emphatically demonstrates this nation’s determination to take a leading role in the academic, scientific and industrial collaboration that must be drawn together to achieve change, to educate and to advance the fields of science that are still in the early stages of discovering the means by which we must all learn to live in harmony with our precious environment. Our proposal was designed by the joint venture of Omrania & Associates and Barton Willmore (UK), in which I was part of a dedicated design team working closely with the Project Directors.

CMA Tower Omrania & Associates (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) £473M CMA Interior Fit-out / MEP Coordinator Concept to Detail Design
.............................................................................................. The Capital Market Authority (CMA) Tower is to be tallest in Saudi Arabia, an iconic ‘crystalline’ tower within King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), soaring 385 m above the surrounding cityscape and providing an anchor for the district as a whole. It is designed by the joint venture of Omrania & Associates and HOK (USA) - 185,000 m² gross floor area - comprising corporate and commercial office space, a fitness centre and pool. The client and project owner (CMA) will occupy approximately 28,000 m² of floor space in the top third of the tower. The remaining office space is for commercial lease. A three storey podium structure at the base of the tower integrates public circulation (via the district sky walk system of the KAFD Masterplan) with private amenity spaces, including a stateof-the art 450 seat auditorium and dining areas. My initial involvement was Presenting Design Concepts and Proposals to the client, liaising with the consultants onsite, as well as Architectural and Interior Design Fit-out. In the latter stages I was appointed as MEP Coordinator with out Bahrain office.

3 Villas Omrania & Associates (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) Feasibility Mr. Al-Zaid Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The client owns piece of land that is very close to where he currently resides. He approached Omrania & Associates to do a feasibility study for 3x 4 bedroom villas, which he wants to build and let out to future tenants. The piece of land - L-Shaped in plan - was split up into 3 equal square plots (one for each villa). The idea was to create a ‘unit’ type that is suitable to be used, duplicated or mirrored to suit each plot in order to keep costs down. The result was a 3 storey villa with separate Family and Guest Entrances, a Garage with Driver’s Accommodation and a Games Room, Roof Terrace and Maid Accommodation on Top Floor. My role was configuring the plans as per the client’s requirements and modelling the massing of the units.

Villa Omrania & Associates (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) Feasibility Mr. Samhan Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. We were approached by the client to design a bespoke contemporary villa on a sloping site in the North West of Riyadh - in a very new neighbourhood that only contains 1 nearby villa, which is currently under construction. Having no context to relate to, was quite challenging but at the same time it allowed us to be liberated and creative without many restrictions. The result was a 3 / 4 storey villa - with a central feature staircase & light well, 4 bedrooms, an outdoor Swimming Pool, a Gymnasium & Sauna / Steam Room and Rooftop Terrace (for winter dining and living). My involvement was liaising with the client and making sure that the plans met his requirements.

Large Villa / Palace Omrania & Associates (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) Feasibility Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Salman Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. A scheme was already prepared by Omrania & Associates but it required some refinements in certain areas namely the Swimming Pool and the Sunken Garden, which needed looking at and resolving before client sign off. My involvement in this project was to re-think the design of these spaces and extending the Swimming Pool to be an indoor / outdoor space - allowing it to flow from within the palace to the exterior sunken courtyard garden. This maintains dramatic panoramic views out onto the Wadi (Valley) and beyond whilst still providing privacy for the occupier.

Office Development Khatib & Alami (KSA) Riyadh (KSA) Feasibility Prince Turkey Bin Abdullah Design Architect Concept
.............................................................................................. This is a feasibility study for a 3 storey office development comprising of 2 luxury penthouse apartments on the top floor for the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). The client wanted an ultra modern design - using full height glazing, modern technology and Building Management Systems (BMS). The intentions of the interior were designed to be light and airy with glazed balustrades and minimalist colours throughout. The look and feel needed to reflect high quality materials and furniture. I introduced a traditional element to the sides and rear elevation of the scheme, whereby I introduced the local Riyadh Sandstone, which featured random linear windows to provide the required privacy to these areas. 2 types of sun shading louvres were introduced (horizontal and vertical depending on the orientation) to the glazed elevations in order to eliminate solar gains.

.............................................................................................. To meet the existing and growing needs of the Muslim community, and in order to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the Centre, in 2009 the Trustees decided to refurbish the whole building. The Centre doubled its capacity and was reopened again in August 2010. The refurbished building now consists of a ‘Masjid’ (Prayer Hall), a Multipurpose Hall, Sisters’ Section, an Administration Office, Kitchen and a well resourced Reference Library. It also now comprises a room that is dedicated for washing and preparing the deceased. The project costs were estimated at just over £300,000. The tasks that I undertook during this period included; Design Advisor as well as Liaising with the Planning Department, Sourcing and Specifying Materials & Colours and Minor Site Supervision. I was also acting Graphic Designer - I designed the new mosque’s Branding, which included the following: Information Booklet / Brochure | Logo | letterheads | leaflets | Posters

Small Roadside Retail Units Powell Dobson Architects (UK) National (UK) Competition Develica Design Architect / Team Leader Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The project stemmed from a detailed analysis of the brief out of which emerged integrated key design components; prefabricated kit of parts will form an individual ‘pod like’ retail unit, a regular grid allows for flexible arrangement thereby tolerating assembly to suit diverse and their arrangement will be flexible and repeatable to suit any site and the demands of the client. Each unit will delight, excite and create a pleasant ambience for the user / occupier. The clever use of glazing provides natural ventilation and creates an active frontage enticing people in and allows the user to have visual contact with the outside world. My role was Project Leader - leading a small team to assist on presentation materials, ancillary studies and visuals.

Mariner’s Quay Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Newport (UK) £17.5M Newport Unlimited Design Architect / Design Leader Concept to Schematic & Full Design
.............................................................................................. 101 New affordable housing units comprising 15 mews & terrace houses (ranging from 2 to 4 beds) and 3 blocks of apartments totaling 86 units - all on a narrow riverfront site within the Old Town Dock area of Newport. Sustainability was the key driver from the outset not just environmentally but in terms of the creation of a successful community. The project is a pilot scheme in Wales to achieve level 5 for the Code for Sustainable Homes. The ‘Development Quality Requirement’ (DQR), and lifetime homes compliant scheme has been designed to be inherently energy efficient in orientation, servicing, construction, and materiality. Based on the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) own statistics only approximately 400 residences have currently (Jan 2011) achieved interim design stage certification at Code Level 5. This means that currently Mariner’s Quay represents nearly 20% of all Code Level 5 & 6 properties in all of England & Wales on one site. As Design Leader of this competition winning scheme, I was responsible for the overall design and external appearance.

Aberystwyth Mill Street Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Aberystwyth (UK) £4M Liberty Mercian Ltd Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The project is a Mixed-use development in the centre of Aberystwyth. The design consists of 2 blocks; the first is 3 Retail Units at ground and first floor levels with rear servicing plus a 2 storey budget hotel above. The second block is a large multi-storey car park (also 4 storeys in height) for use by the general public in the city centre. The difficulty was trying to break up the façade of the 2 buildings so as to appear less overwhelming in relation to the existing 3 storey surrounding buildings. I was responsible for the overall Massing & Design. A number of schemes were produced for the corner block alone - ranging from a mix of Retail & Hotel with adjacent light Industrial Units to a mix of Retail & Hotel alone and a 3rd option comprising just Retail. The adjacent existing Multi-storey Car park was redesigned externally to be broken down in elevation to a friendly scale so as not to impose on the whole site. A palette of materials & colours were chosen to help us achieve this and the corners were raised in order to complement the adjacent buildings.

Buckley’s Brewery (Phase 3) Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Llanelli (UK) £1M Gwalia Housing Association Design Architect / Project Architect Concept to Schematic & Full Design
.............................................................................................. The development comprised 12 residential units (all 1 bedroom) within a refurbished and a ‘new build’ block arranged on the perimeter of the site, therefore creating a private courtyard feel to the scheme allowing space for onsite parking and natural light to penetrate into the site. The refurbished block is 2 storeys in height and comprises 4 units and the ‘new build’ is 4 storeys in height comprising the remaining 8 units. As Design and Project Architect, I was responsible for the overall Design and Planning Submission of the scheme. I also attended all of the meetings held between the Client, Consultants and Planning Authority.

CAIU Whitchurch Hospital Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Cardiff (UK) £30M Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust Architect Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. Cardiff Acute Inpatient Unit is a new mental health unit in Whitchurch, Cardiff. It is part of ‘Design for Life: Building for Wales’ programme. The design seeks to provide a building which is responsive to modern models of care and offers a therapeutic environment that is sympathetic to its setting, sustainable and which takes maximum advantages of the opportunities presented by this site to derive health care benefits from the close relationship to the parkland landscape. My role was to provide support to the Healthcare Team by giving them assistance in the internal planning and departmental distribution. I also contributed to the planning submission documents namely the Design and Access Statement.

Vision - Baglan Industrial Park Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Port Talbot (UK) £12M The Fleming Group Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The Fleming Group which was founded by John Fleming from the Seven Heads Peninsula in West Cork in 1975 has grown to be one of the most dynamic and progressive development and construction companies in Ireland today. Now with an annual turnover of more than €200M, it spans a range of activities in development, construction, manufacturing, industrial and tourism, both in Ireland and further afield. The Unit follows a sustainable approach to design with ease of use by all potential users, including disabled people. The project is a new industrial Unit for Class B1, B2 and B8; totaling almost 26000m². My main involvement was the design of the feature corner entrance, showroom and office accommodation.

Site J & K Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Swansea (UK) Competition Charles Church Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The scheme proposal was done in line with the existing Masterplan scheme for Sites J & K for a Mixed-use scheme: ranging from 2-7 storeys, including a 63 bed hotel, 160 residential units, 25,500 Sq Ft of commercial space and a relocated base for the Sea Scouts (currently occupying a unit along the existing promenade). The site presents a number of key frontages - the solution in line with the Masterplan was to develop 4 perimeter blocks to address both the street to the current Swansea Point development and the promenade along the River Tawe, with each perimeter block forming a protective courtyard allowing for the maximum number of units to have views on to the river. Each block is served by a semi basement car park creating a strong plinth running across the scheme with further parking along the street.

Site J - Hilton Hotel Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Swansea (UK) ÂŁ14.9M OPCO Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The vision, identified by the Swansea Point Masterplan, was to create a high quality urban environment in harmony with its existing surroundings. The scheme comprises a Hotel to the South of the site and a predominantly 5 Storey block into Atlantic Square. The intention is to create a high quality destination for visitors to the area, providing meeting and conference facilities for local businesses and banqueting facilities for special events. The hotel will include 164 high quality guest rooms, a restaurant, bar and lounge facilities as well as function rooms and a gym. Due to the restricted timescale that we had on this project, my role as Design Architect was to work part of a team to assist in the overall design and massing as well as providing support in the production of Planning Submission drawings, supporting documentations and 3D visualisations.

.............................................................................................. The scheme comprises 23 Town Houses to the South of the site and a predominantly 4 storey block consisting of A3 units at ground level into Atlantic Square designed to encourage activity within the space and a ‘Sea Scouts’ to replace the existing one to be demolished. The upper levels will comprise 18 commercial apartments. The proposed scheme capitalises on its location and enhances the river front promenade. Due to the restricted timescale that we had on this project, my role as Design Architect was to work part of a team to assist in the overall design and massing as well as providing support in the production of Planning Submission drawings, supporting documentations and 3D visualisations.

Capitol Centre Powell Dobson Architects (UK) Cardiff (UK) ÂŁ24M Moorfield Group Design Architect Concept to Schematic Design
.............................................................................................. The development was on the site of the derelict cinema which adjoins the existing Capital Centre in Cardiff city centre. In total the development consisted of 164 residential units, 154 of which were contained within an over tower and the remaining 10 were situated in a block of affordable apartments that wrapped round the tower. I was involved quite late on in the scheme after the massing an internal planning had been approved and signed on by the client. The key driver for this scheme was to get as many units as possible on a floor plate whilst limiting vertical circulation cores to only 1 core. My main involvement was the external appearance of the tower as I was responsible for the elevation design as well as the colour / materials palette that was approved. I also looked at the existing parts of the scheme (namely the retail and car parking areas on lower levels), which were refurbished to suit the rest of the proposal and adjacent buildings.
