President’s Message:

The Annual Report

Greetings! On behalf of the Mohawk College Foundation employees, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have been instrumental in the transition from a department of the College to a fully independent foundation. The Mohawk College Foundation was initially created in 1983 however, because of regulations at that time colleges were not permitted to aggressively fundraise. The Foundation entered a period of dormancy that lasted from the late 1990’s until 2012. During that dormant period a group of staff and community leaders continued to ensure that regular meetings were held and that the charitable status of MCF was maintained.

Our Values

Starting in April 2012, we moved to a new era. The Mohawk College Foundation stepped out of dormancy and now fulfills an active and important role in promoting and supporting the College. We have been busy working on several fronts, including:

Innovation: We continue to focus on innovation as we grow into our new roles

• • • • • •

is a record of our successes.

are reflected in the activity and results achieved: Respect: Our success has been built upon a solid foundation of strong relationships Service Excellence: Our staff provides outstanding service to our partners Accountability: We are open, transparent and reliable in all that we do

By-Laws Revisions New Policies/Procedures Data clean-up and documentation Transfer of staff from the College Hiring new staff to fill vacant positions Development of a Mission, Vision and Values

All of this new and essential activity has been accomplished successfully while continuing to press for enhanced fundraising revenues and alumni relations activity. It has been a very busy and very satisfying year.

2012 | 2013 Development Report: Support from donors within and beyond our campus means that when students attend Mohawk, they can attend with the peace of mind of financial support. It also means that renovations and new buildings can enhance their student experience in and out of the classroom. The Development team works to raise funds for Mohawk College priority projects such as scholarships, bursaries and major infrastructure projects. During this first year, strong programming and a talented team were established, laying the groundwork for meaningful donor engagement. Scotiabank Gift Announcement

Creating the environment for students to learn, both within and outside the classroom has been the focus of campus renewal that has resulted in bold new spaces and places. The iconic new Learning Exchange, followed by the transformation of academic hubs and the centralization of Student Services in The Square has made an impact on the students and our campus. Philanthropic support for the Fennell Campus Renewal Campaign’s capital projects continues to be the primary focus of fundraising activities. The commitment this year from donors like Scotiabank, BMO Financial Group, Great West Life – London Life – Canada Life and the Mohawk College Alumni Association have played an important role in campus redevelopment.

The David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre opened at the start of the fall semester, and has become a popular destination among with students and staff alike.

In 2012 the College broke ground on the new athletic facilities, where recreation and varsity athletes compete and train. Primarily funded by our students, community support also plays a key role in the project. This year, local businessman and community champion David Braley announced his transformational gift of $3 million to Mohawk and to the project. The David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre opened at the start of the fall semester, and has become a popular destination among students and staff alike.

Senator David Braley Gift Announcement

Student awards support and inspire students. Financial support through bursaries and scholarships eases the financial burden. Students express that they are personally encouraged with this support and feel that someone believes in their success. For donors, the selfless gesture of supporting students in their desire to acquire valuable skills, leading to fulfilling and challenging careers, is inspiring.

Eager to take on new challenges and make its mark, the Foundation played host to two cornerstone special events for the first time last year. These signature events transitioned well under the Foundation’s guidance, achieving milestone sponsorship and attendance. The President’s Dinner provides President Rob MacIsaac the opportunity to update our community of friends and supporters on Mohawk’s successes. Participants in The President’s Golf Classic enjoyed a beautiful day on the course and raised funds for Access bursaries. Combined, the dinner and the golf tournament raised $34,703 towards student bursaries. As well, a longstanding third party event continues to make an impact at Mohawk College. The Marshall Family raised $43,090 at the 7th annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit to support improvements at the Stoney Creek Campus. 6

Each year, valuable materials, machines, software and one of a kind items are received across the campuses, enhancing teaching and learning. In the 2012/2013 year, gifts in kind totalling more than $148,000 benefited Mohawk College. One such gift caught the attention and imagination of our campuses and our community. Kelowna Flightcraft donated a Boeing 727 to the Faculty of Engineering`s Aviation Technician program. The aircraft is a living lab that provides hands on experience to students in the two year program, and is the first of its kind for Mohawk College.

This year, the Foundation raised important funding for campus needs. Donors committed gifts and pledges to special capital projects and student awards totalling $2,257,000, and gifts in kind of more than $145,000 for the benefit of our academic areas.

Mohawk Alumni are kept engaged by a diversified offering of programs and services. Member benefits enable alumni to receive discounts or special group rates at National and Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Delta Hotels, CAA, Soft Moc Shoes and many more. Affinity partners such as Johnson Insurance, BMO and Jostens School Rings provide special pricing on home and auto insurance, MasterCard rates and school rings. All programs are designed with Mohawk graduates in mind. Events and activities are another means of keeping graduates involved with Mohawk. Events focus on current students, young alumni, alumni with families, regional groups and individuals. Two signature events held annually are, the Alumni of Distinction Awards program which celebrates graduates who are excelling in their careers and giving back to their communities and the Alumni Golf Classic. Both events are well attended and engage a large number of alumni. Career Networking and Etiquette Dinners are also organized by the Alumni Office to assist students and alumni, young and old to learn the soft skills that will provide them with confidence entering the working world.

In October 2012 we appealed to our alumni in search of their financial support. Our graduates’ generosity was urgently requested to help fund the student awards that enable talented and driven people to access a Mohawk education, and our graduates responded. We are grateful for all the gifts received and hope that this will embed a new tradition at Mohawk, where alumni are inspired to embrace an opportunity to help those who follow in their footsteps. The Alumni Council acts in an advisory capacity to the Alumni Relations Team and provides advice, insight and support initiatives created for alumni. The Council is comprised of 12 graduates from varying programs and years of graduation. In 2012-2013, meetings of the Council were held bi-monthly with the annual Strategic Planning Retreat taking place in June 2012. Priorities outlined by the Council for the year were Access/Mentoring, Alumni of Distinction Awards Program and Partnerships.
