Across the country, governments and health leaders have begun to invest in digital health technologies that promise to provide benefits such as reducing costs, errors and adverse events while improving patient safety, increasing efficiency, and improving patient care. Digital health makes the right information available to the right person at the right time.
With the support of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Mohawk constructed a lab dedicated to digital health applied research. The state-of-the-art lab includes a multi-screen high resolution visualization wall for analysis as well as simulation, touch and surface computing devices. MEDIC also has consumer and commercial grade medical devices, mobile computing devices, simulators suitable for large scale testing, internet accessible private cloud computing facilities, and access to an online, sandboxed versions of various eHealth ecosystems. Mohawk has received grant funding from government agencies such as NSERC, NRC IRAP and CFI.
MEDIC is an applied research lab with an international reputation for expertise in interoperability and digital health (mobile health and eHealth). MEDIC helps bridge the gap between innovative small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the digital health needs of the healthcare system. With digital health still in its infancy in Canada, MEDIC has become known as a go-to resource in the digital health community, providing vendorneutral tooling, teaming, training and testing services to fulfill its applied research mandate. MEDIC hosts two major training and knowledge sharing conferences- Apps for Health and FHIR North- and researchers and staff are frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences.
MEDIC research team MEDIC’s applied research team is world-renowned for their expertise in digital health and interoperability. The MEDIC team, made of up faculty, specialized researchers, software developers, technologists and co-op students from Mohawk College, work directly with industry-leading vendors, digital health SMEs and start-ups, international aid organizations and provincial, federal and international government agencies.

Launch of the Mohawk Applied Research Centre in Health Informatics.
2009
Mohawk MEDIC receives $2.3 million from NSERC to implement an architecture for the integration of health records across Canada.
2010
Mohawk MEDIC wins Canada Health Infoway’s Standards Collaborative Peer Award.
2011
Kwazulu-natal University in South Africa adopts Mohawk’s health informatics model.
2012
Mohawk MEDIC awarded $2 million grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation College Industry Innovation Fund.
2015
Mohawk MEDIC partners with the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program.
2016
Mohawk MEDIC receives $1.75 million from NSERC to launch Canada’s only Technology Access Centre focused on digital health software.
