Technology Access Centre in Digital Health Re-imagining healthcare through technology How can we spend less money and not decrease quality of care? How can we prevent human error in hospitals and clinics? How can everyone involved in patient care know the most up-to-date information? The answer is digital health- an industry that is focused on using innovative technology to improve patient care and efficiency in our hospitals, clinics and homes. Thanks to a $1.75 million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Mohawk College is home to Canada’s only Technology Access Centre in Digital Health. The Technology Access Centre for Digital Health supports innovation, adoption and commercialization of digital technology into the healthcare sector, with an emphasis on partnering with small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The Technology Access Centre for Digital Health is part of Mohawk’s mHealth and eHealth Development and Innovation Centre (MEDIC), an internationally renowned applied research centre in digital health.

Helping Canadian businesses grow The Technology Access Centre for Digital Health makes it easy for Canadian businesses and organizations to access specialized services and advice. Digital

health companies require access to a different type of expertise, when compared to most technology-driven SMEs and start-ups. It can be difficult for them to stay current with evolving and constantly changing standards that govern privacy, security and interoperability. That’s why everyone from new start-ups to experienced digital health companies can benefit from using MEDIC’s services.

MEDIC’s services The Technology Access Centre in Digital Health has four key areas of expertise: teaming, tooling, testing and training. Each specialized service provides a unique competitive advantage to an SME: teaming services can give a company a running start to launching a new product or service; tooling and open source solutions will lower the cost and risk of development projects; testing allows for the early detection of problems and issues; and training helps companies understand foundational and advanced concepts in digital health. Technology Access Centre clients benefit from access to MEDIC’s resources, including a state-of-the-art lab, consumer and commercial grade medical devices, mobile computing devices, simulators suitable for large scale testing, internet accessible private cloud computing facilities, and access to an online, sandboxed version of various eHealth ecoystems.

MEDIC is

an invaluable resource for small and medium enterprises such as ours to become established in the health sector in Ontario.
