BUILDING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY

Building For Our Students and Our Community Incredibly generous donors with record-setting gifts helped build and sustain Mohawk’s momentum over the past year. Together, we are making game-changing investments on behalf of our students at all of our campuses and in the community. The cornerstone of our investments is The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation at our Fennell campus. Construction is in full swing on what will be the country’s largest, and our region’s first, net-zero institutional building. We have completed construction on a new building at our Stoney Creek campus that will bring apprentices and students together from different trades and programs to work on major projects. At our Institute for Applied Health Sciences, we are opening a Centre for Health Care Simulation that will be first of its kind at an Ontario college. Our students will be even better prepared for their clinical placements and careers as health care professionals. And finally, we are taking our City School initiative on the road with a new mobile classroom. City School is removing barriers and putting a Mohawk education within reach of more people than ever before in the communities we serve. Thank you for making Mohawk a college that is very much on the move for current and future students.

It has been an absolutely incredible experience working with the Mohawk Foundation this year. With their focus on the best interests of the students, they have allowed many individuals to be able to focus on their ability to positively contribute to the Mohawk College community and not their ability to pay.

Honouring a Nurse’s Impact

FAST FACTS

Opened Spring 2017

• Educating 2,000+ students each semester

Looking for a way to honour their mother and sister, Sid and Elaine decided to make a donation to the nursing program here at Mohawk. Sid and Elaine’s daughter-in-law, Tracy, works at Mohawk College, and “supporting the nursing students here felt like a good fit for our family,” Sid said.

• Largest universitycollege collaborative anatomy and physiology program in Canada • New enhanced ultrasound lab with traditional ultrasound imaging, electronic picture archiving and advanced ultrasound simulators

There’s a story behind every bursary and the one behind the Marion & Frances Kadish Bursary is of love and devotion to family. Sid and Elaine Kadish established this bursary in 2013 to honour Sid’s mother and sister. The Kadish family knows that nurses like Sid’s mother make a difference in so many lives. As a patient at St. Peter’s Hospital, Sid’s sister appreciated the care and compassion provided by her health care team.

This Bursary is very important to me as I have moved away from home to come to Mohawk. I have been finding it difficult to make ends meet on my own. I came from a single parent family and I was never sure if my dreams would be able to come true, however, this bursary has opened the door to so many opportunities. A Legacy of Infinite Curiosity and Generosity – The Lamping Estate

As a mature woman following a lifelong dream of studying music, this award assures me that I am indeed, making the right decision. Returning to school after many years has its challenges including the financial challenges, so this award is very welcome at this time.

Helen Lamping’s estate gift is one that will continue the Lamping legacy of adult education at Mohawk College.

Gina Monaco, Antony Roberts Bursary Recipient

Helen and Hugh Lamping

In 2007, at the age of 60, Helen completed a Disabilities Management course at Mohawk College. Well-known for her inherent curiosity to learn, Helen enjoyed studying at Mohawk and her time at the college helped her enhance her career. Helen’s passion for education was contagious. Her step daughter says that she made each of her husbands (Paul and Hugh) a better man, and

she was instrumental in helping her husband Hugh achieve his dream of finishing high school. In 1997, with the support and encouragement of Helen, Hugh went back to school and eventually earned his high school diploma. “Adult education is one of the greatest things going,” he said. Committed to lifelong learning, Helen wanted to inspire others who were returning to school. Now, with her estate gift, she is fulfilling her wish of helping to make other’s dreams of self-improvement through adult education a reality.

A Tradition of Giving A lot can happen in twenty years, but some things never change, like the Masonic Foundation of Ontario’s continued support of Mohawk students. Since its inception in 1997, the Masonic Foundation of Ontario Bursary has supported a number of students. Receiving countless thank you letters over the years, this inspired the Masons to re-invest into the endowment fund this year, providing Mohawk with an additional $25,000 to further increase the impact on student financial need.

Alumni Giving Back As an international student, Neng Wang felt a strong sense of belonging at Mohawk College, a school which he says changed his life. Studying at Mohawk helped Wang develop a deep connection to Canada. Wang, who was a financial assistance recipient says he decided to “give back to my school just like someone did for me when I was at school,” which is why he established the Neng Wang Scholarship. The award, which Wang hopes will inspire other international students in the Insurance program, is meant to make “other students feel loved and cared for by Mohawk and MoCrews,” Wang says. Wang encourages other Mohawk alumni to give back to the school that gave so much to him. “Never forget where you are from, and what Mohawk gave to us,” he says. “Let’s give back. Let’s make Mohawk proud of us.”
