THE WORKS Tutor: Fairuz Reza Razali, Syed Sobri Syed Zubir, Jamsyid Idrus, Ar. Mohamed Fariz Hilmi

The Works was inspired by the dying goldsmithing practices in Kota Bharu, a cultural practice that even Ptolemy himself implied in his version of Mappa Mundi as Aurea Chersonesus: Semenanjung Emas. The main question central to The Works then is “how can a dying culture be used as a leverage to revitalise a dying urban periphery?” The proposed scheme for The Works can be seen as a dual higher education-gilding industry programme acting as a catalyst for Kota Bharu’s urban fringe. The overall planning is a circuit of sub programme clusters that feeds into the central catalyst: goldsmith workshops. Permeability, and adaptable spaces are the two of the strategies adopted for the scheme, as they are proven to contribute to the higher footfall of the intervened area, thus enliven the decaying urban area.

Kelantan has been long known for its desposits of gold. Situated at the tip of a golden belt, gold has been long associated with its culture. This fact is supported by the Epic Ramayana where Suvarnabhumi (golden land) and Suvarnadvipa (golden island) was mentioned. Ptolemy of Alexandria in 400 B.C.E. had also acknowledged Kelantan (Kole Polis) in his Mappa Mundi. It is at this time that the Golden Khersonese first appeared. Gold related programme concentration is the primary urban structure element to make sense of Kota Bahru. The goldsmiths and jewellery stores are concentrated in old quarter with several overspill towards Sungai Kelantan to the west. They are all a fine grained enterprises (to quote John Montgomery) and very much dependant on its returning customers. The development patterns on the other hand makes an east-west axis of Kota Bharu.

S

PRESSING ISSUE urban development narrative by-product

The Works is a hybrid of school of arts, goldsmith enterprises, and fine metal refinery. The proposal adopts the attitude of people oriented urban intervention, but with a corporate enabler: a public university. So, when stripped of the public administration, it is actually a series of public funded urban interventions for the public. fine metal textiles

BIG POTENTIAL make the redundancy relevant again

P

The traditional goldsmiths of Kota Bharu and their dying goldsmithing art form have a big potential in reviving the redundant quarter of Kota Bharu. The artisanal praxis has its own appeal and carries a significant value as a cultural heritage. It is only a question of how to revive the culture that is left to regenerate Kota Bharu.

URBAN DEATH MASK

Urban Death Mask is an aggloromeration on urban decay celebration - a city being the popular construct. This theory suggests that a city will reach several points in time to stabilise the effects of its popular interventions. At that point, multiple layers that exist in the city must remediate their collective logic to inform on the necessary actions needed to maintain the continuity of its narrative - staying the course or otherwise.

T The Works is a school of arts-goldsmithrefinery hybrid. The proposal adopts the attitude of people oriented urban intervention, but with a corporate enabler: a public university. By programming a fully functioning system, The Works reconciliates supply & demand for the art of gold smithing, hence reviving the dying traditions.

However, the abandoned buildings of the commercial stock is of significant as they provides the opportunity for the stakeholder to acquire and occupy those space, hence activating them.

INVENTORY provisional public space stock

I

Selected public spaces are foremost important as the provisional intervened space. These are the ‘third spaces’ where high volumes of footfalls can be captured.

Selected redundant buildings and spaces within a building is put under the provisional stock for intervened building. They will be reprogrammed in accordance to the hybrid system proposed.

The final intervened state of the the buildings stock are derived from the morphological studies of the building stocks. Then they are categorised based on its intended use. The final intervention are distributed loosely throughout the site. This way, a larger programme circuit can be applied, using the public space optimally. The distributed typologies also allow for a juxtaposition between old and new, so that although the intervention is recognisable it also sits well within the surrounding.

K

To conclude, The Works suggests for a catalytic hybrid programme that leverage a traditional culture to regenerate the dying part of fringe Kota Bharu. The programme hybridity is in response to the culture which by itself is dying. So a related programme should be use to revive the tradition. The result is a an activated public thrid spaces that can be utilised by everone.

Data will be the currency in 2050. Hence moving beyond IoT, a society led data is projected to be the norm in Kota Bharu by then. Moving even further beyond, The Vault focuses to serve those who need to circumnavigate data gatekeepers for their enterprises. In other words, The Vault is a data based framework provider with a hidden server centre for the dark web. The tower offers commercial offices and data framework for data bases company such as the Radio station operators, and archives. Smaller companies and start-ups are also offered the same services although in a smaller scale such as the coworking spaces and co-located servers. The idea behind the scheme is the need for a safe place for independent authors to publish their books incognito. Data server centres cum hidden network nodes offers just that.

ISSUE

There are 2 critical issues pertinent and in relation to data. The first one is the data gatekeeping that is prevalent in the form of paywalls. The second one is the safe avenue for authors and publishers for books that are not necessarily in line with the value of the authority. This is important because the world is moving towards data driven society. Withholding it only hinders our progress as a modern society.

ISSUE a n n u a l i n u n dat i o n

Kota Bharu specifically faced an annual issue of innundation. Marked by monsoon shifts on the third quarter annualy, Kota Bharu will brace itself from the monsoon season. The latest large innundation was recorded on 2014 where Sg. Kelantan rose up to 6m and overflew into the City. This is vital to the city as its operation literally stopped during the period.

Husa Network Sdn. Bhd. is acompany that carries the media broadcasting brand of Manis FM. They have recently rebrand themself as a more forward looking and digital savvy radio station. Husa Network is identified to be the key stakeholder for The Vault in line with their newly established vision on big data. Concurrently the key tenants identified are those that have their business centred around data usage, they will highly benefitted upon occupying the tower. Tupperware expanded itself as the provider for server cabinet and racks. MPH involves in independent publishing and private archiving along with Arkib Negara. UNDRR, having their local office here can monitor and collect the envionmental data on disasters. And finally, Huawei as the emerging giant of fast speed network solution provider.

Duality is achieved by means of accommodating 2 core elements in one single pace. Conceptualy, it is represented by a propolis within an iceberg. Programmatically, duality is implemented in the form of two separate but parallel programme. Duality is then enhanced contextually, by means of incorporating kinetic element as part of the otherwise static building; like a ferris wheel.

T Seeing how much data plays a big role in our lives, its management, security and privacy is crucial. Everything that we do is based on specific set of data we gather and utilised. This is when a centre for data collection, as well as access to hidden network becomes a commodity. Independent publishers will benefits this allowance to plow their trade while being anonymous. And data collection for disasters become easily managed, analyised for future risk management. Both of these are the core programme of the Vault: hidden service network provider and data mining centre.

The Commons is an urban regeneration catalyst that occupies the redundant Brooke Dockyard, Jalan Market, Kuching. The rich culture of Old Kuching centres around Sg. Sarawak. where the daily lives in Old Kuching all revolves around the river. Domestic culture dominates the materiality on the northern side; while on the south, consumption culture is the most visible. However, a cultural disconnectivity is apparent in three interrelated issues: dying; disconnected; and redundant. Old Kuching itself was seen divided into several quarters of specific identity and specialisation. These quarters were interconnected with pedestrian circuits. The site was located within the proposed cultural industry quarter. This specialisation was due to the industry narrated through the history of the place, specifically Lorong Dock and Jalan Power. However, as the activities shifted from industrial production to a domestic one, the quarter was proposed as an art neighbourhood to complement the two.

“Realities are never handed down; they are constanly negotiated. Individually constructed realities is true on its own, and they inform a larger collective”

The material cultures found along Sg. Sarawak can be further simplified into four main categories as above. All of them combined make the intangible heritage of Old Kuching. These classification is otherwise obscured prior to the cultural mapping.

I PRESSING ISSUE cultural discontinuity

Three interconnected issues were found throughout the site and the surrounding Old Kuching. They are dying, disconnectivity, and redundancy. These three elements - because they are interconnected - make up the critical issue of Old Kuching: cultural discontinuity.

Opportunity is found when art and cultural galleries were found in Old Kuching. The production and exhibition was determined as a programme that can revive the discontinued culture. The artistic programme then can be inserted into the production of material culture of Sungai Sarawak. Their roles apart from creating art pieces based on cultural experimentation, is to document the cultural process itself. The new adapted programme is called: multi-disciplinary art.

The site sits within the greater Kuching. It lies next to Sg. Sarawak which separates Kuching North and Kuching South. Historically, the site is located at the earliest recorded area during the Sarawak Raj. Currently, the site is one of the entry point into Old Kuching where public usually frequented the esplanade throughout the day. The dockyard itself used to be the berthing point for vessels that connected Sarawak and Singapore.

The dockyard is a dry dock built in the early 1900s for the fabrication of the Crown Colony’s vessels. After independence, the dock was used to repair government vessel under a government trust, the Brooke Dockyard Engineering Works Company. Currently, all the operation had been relocated in Sejingkat, and the dockyard in Jalan Market is becoming redundant.

Due to the profile of the building, it is necessary to have an end-to-end services core with arterial distribution. This is the most pragmatic services layout. Apart from a straightforward distribution, the two cores halves the running length, therefore reduces the section of especially the ductings.

The main structural frame for the scheme is the long spanning warren truss. This was implemented conceptually akin to a bridge. Therefore, the main solution is that the depth of the warren truss is the height of the building. Steel construction detail was chosen to have a more homogenuous connection. changes in material was celebrated for example by the use of steel floor decking to support the concrete floor.
