SEMESTER 5|AQUATIC CENTER WATERCOLOURS
Architecture & Planning|THESIS Fourth year/2015 Bogmalo,Goa, India
01
Designing a water sports center to cater to training activities for scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, jet skiing and so on. Water sports in India is in its infancy and is mainly restricted to tourist activities with little or no attention given to competitive water sports. Architecturally the intent is to provide the infrastructure to raise water sports in India to a competitive level. In an increasingly globalized world, sports on the international level is a matter of national prestige. The project aims to tap into the potential of our abundant population and bring out the best in the long neglected field of water sports.

The site is located in Bogmalo beach, Goa. A tranquil beach with less number of tourists. There is a 5-star hotel located on one corner of the beach and on the opposite corner is the proposal. The intensity of the waves make it preferable to surf and have other water sports activities. There are a number of shacks, guest houses and restaurants that keeps the area active. The existing creek on site divides the space into private, semi private and public zones. It also acts as an axis around which the built is located. The levels play an important role in providing more privacy. There are various focal points on the site. These focal points help users pause and encourage interaction among them.

The main concept was to adapt to the existing contours. This would create a natural massing on site. These levels add to the landscaping. They can also be used as spill over space around different activities. image-left:The focal point leading to the housing & sports block, right: Housing complex, Below:Site section
Parallel wall construction with pivot doors would make the construction simpler and help in cross ventilation. The materials used are rustic and earthy, that is wooden louvers, cement plaster/ exposed concrete.

Urban Insert Fourth year/2014 Brigade Road,Bangalore, India
02
The site is located in the Central Business District of Bangalore. The project tackles issues that plague the city due to its sudden unplanned growth namely, excessive vehicular traffic, lack of pedestrianisation and crucially the loss of character of one of the most historically prominent roads in the city, Brigade Road. The design also aims to revive the lost essence of Bangalore being the ‘Garden City’.
Site| Satellite image
Heavy Traffic junctions
Urban Study model
The site is surrounded by busy roads. There are a number of schools, retail outlets and corporate offices in the area that give rise to peak hour vehicular traffic. Due to the heavy traffic flow in the juction of Brigade road and residency road, the essence of Brigade road is not continued beyond the signal. Fewer retail outlets, lesser crowd. This area also lacks in parking areas which causes chaos and traffic jams. The Urban insert that has been proposed has been designed in a way to give importance to small aspects of the surroundings. The revival of the Opera house, realisation of a War memorial and to also bring back the lung spaces or open parks.

Bus stop and war memorial
Brigade-Residency road junction
The city center faces the traffic junction. The open space or the Plaza, that Bangalore lacks would cause passer-by’s to pause. The green spaces around the built would act as lung spaces, would also allow students to spill out encouraging social interaction and give them the opportuniy to realise the existance of the war memorial. The pedestrian pathway would increase the number of people spreading beyond the signal, thus carrying with them the essence of Brigade road. This may also revive the Opera house. 1. The pedestrian path leads to a number of kiosks and a library below. The commercial block has Retail outlets and corporate offices that have private entry/ exit points. Water cascades are used to mask noise since it is a busy area. There is ample seating area for users.

Urban Design Fourth year/2014 Gandhi Bazaar,Bangalore, India
03
The conservancy roads are now obsolete and do not serve the purpose they were initially created for. In fact, they are misused now. Thus, it was necessary to link these roads to the main roads to create shorter routes in the area and to cater to food joints, and more over encourage social interaction. Linkage theory focuses on lines formed by streets, pedestrian ways, linear open spaces or other linking elements that physically connect the parts of the city.
MENTAL MAPPING - OBSERVATIONS

Site area - .26 sqkm Ward area -1.17 sqkm Ward population- 36,015
Basavangudi(named after the Bull temple) is one of the oldest areas of Bangalore. It has a predominantly Kannada-speaking population and still retains a handful of bungalows from the time of its founding. Basavangudi, being a planned locality for the most part centers around the lush green and tree-covered M.N. Krishnarao Park. On the four corners of the park, roads radiate outwards from large round-abouts (they each house a playing field) to the surrounding areas of Shankarapuram, Gavipuram, Jayanagar and NR colony. The wide tree-lined avenues of Basavangudi seldom have any congestion and traffic flows freely. Property lines a 100 years ago were intersected by conservancy roads due to the lack of a sewage system. As a result, properties stretched from one road to the next, usually about a 100ft or so. Gandhi bazaar(area of study) is one of the busiest areas in Bangalore. Since it’s one of the oldest locatlity in Bangalore, the area gives a strong sense of Bangalore’s culture in terms of Food and Architecture as well.
1.The Bugle Rock park was considered an important neighbourhood landmark by most people. 2.Temples were prominently mentioned. 3.The grid pattern was very obvious, though sometimes misplaced. 4.Eateries and educational institutions were also important secondary landmarks. 5.People had a strong sense of what the area smelled like or felt like:more intangible decriptions of the area.
Gandhi Bazaar-Bull temple road|Mental-mapping*
The area was studied and analysis were drawn. The area needed some re-development. After studying the area, it was known that the conservancy roads were not used to their ability. Thus, the linkage theory was thought of .
MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE STUDY AREA - Coarse grain - Grid iron pattern around a diagonal road - Approximate perimeter of a block - 450m. - Long, Linear Plots - Residential, institutional and commercial land use - Ratio of built mass to voids is balanced - Defined edges - Building mass continuity Original plan of basavangudi |Area of study - Gandhi Bazaar

CONSERVANCY LANES - Opportunity for redevelopment - Linkage Theory Varied functions of conservancy roads
1:00pm-5:30pm Potential Pedshed -Well-defined linkages -Average lot size is 100m(min-30m max-150m)

Some are just used as parking and are abandoned throughout the day.
Conservancy lanes are one of the main weaknesses as well as opportunities for redevelopment in Gandhi Bazaar. Some of the newer buildings face these streets. They form a good pedestrian network through the area.
Panoromic view of the longest conservancy lane that runs parallel to the Gandhi Bazaar main road.
Conservancy lanes in the area 1. Eateries on the streets close to the colleges and 2.The residences opening into the lanes would have gardens
These conservancy lanes could be used to link the main road to the other parallel roads improving the pedestrian connectivity. The walls could be made interesting and this cold encourage street artists too.

The Design brief stated the need for housing specifically for senior citizens. The idea of having a series of courtyards connected to each other has been explored. The focus of design is to foster social interaction and have a sense of belonging among the residents.
The public zone consists of the administration and studio aparments. The semi public zone has the clubhouse. The private zones consists of all the apartment blocks ensuring privacy and maximum security for the users.
The site is surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Well connected to the center of the city. Schools/colleges/ hospitals in close proximity. Site data and analysis
VIEW
Every block faces the central couryard. This ensures visual connectivity.Every apartment has ample lighting and ventilation.
The master planning is done in a way to encourage the users to utilise the space for gardening and other activities. Series of small courtyards are linked to the larger central courtyard. The Central court allows users to have various activities, encourages social interaction among residents and makes the spave look vast. There are six blocks, three of which are for the residents, one is the clubhouse and two other are for guests/visitors. The individual blocks have their own courtyard. The arrangement of these four blocks are done in such a way so as to increase ventilation.
Elevation & View of the clubhouse
View of the administration and Guest apartment block
The clubhouse consists of a semi open swimming pool, indoor squash court, board games and a restaurant in the terrace.
Each apartment block consists of 4 units of 2 or 3BHK. The ground floor units have a private garden. Each unit face a courtyard.
The studio apartments have 3 units per floor. The unit in the center has a balcony that face the rear. the two units on either of the side have corner balconies that face th entrance of the complex. This adds to the massing of the building.

The Master planning is done in such a way to allow the user to be flown into spaces without actually realising. There are visual barriers that stop different categories of users. Once the user exits the entrance exhibition he goes through the transition spaces i.e, the sculpture garden and cafeteria into the next exhibition space. Students and artist can move further into the workshop spaces.
