Preface Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gaining high popularity due to their low price and increasing applications. Drones are currently being adopted for their various applications such as inspection of cargo, disaster management, photography, agriculture inspections, emergency situations, and many more. Detection of drones was earlier achieved by using primary and secondary radars and automatic dependent surveillance (ADS), which provided the air traffic controller with the information needed for maintaining safe and efficient air traffic. Currently, there are around 1 million drones registered with FAA, and the number is increasing day by day. For remote ID, federal bodies are yet to frame some solid rules, most of which are expected to begin implementation by the end of 2019. Instances of illegal drone usage for terrorism, smuggling contrabands into prisons, and flying drones too close to manned aircrafts near airports, among others have led to a surge in demand for remote drone identification systems. Increased investment by companies in this technology is a welcome sign to the industry since it can indirectly lead to an increase in drone sales, since drone operators will now find it safe to operate their drones.
