AMRITA PRITAM Her Idea of Love and Life


The title of the blog might have given you the gist of what it is all about. So, a few months ago, I heard a poem by Amrita Pritam going viral on Instagram reels. It made me feel curious about the whole poem, then I listened to it carefully and also, read it again and again. I decided to go through her other works like novels, prose, essays, and even short stories. To understand her idea of love, I had to go through her life, lessons, love, career everything In this blog, we are going to look closely at the life of Amrita Pritam to know the reasons that made her the Amrita Pritam and what shaped her thoughts? .


Amrita Pritam was born on 31st, August in the year, 1919 at Gujranwala in Punjab and was named, Amrit Kaur. Her mother was a school teacher and her, father was an editor of a literary Journal. She was a Sikh by religion but her mother’s death, when she was 11 years old, made her lose all the faith in God. After the circumstance, she shifted to Lahore with her father. In the period, she began to write to feel better after her mother’s demise. At the age of 17 years, she became a published writer in 1936. She wrote about her misery due to her mother’s loss in her poetry anthology, ‘Amrit Lehran’. Her writings started to their next level after gaining popularity. She joined the ‘Progressive writers movement ’ to influence more people. . Amrita Pritam has seen the partition of India very closely and she has witnessed the crime, violence, and suffering of people. She expressed all the pain through her partition literature. Because of those literary works of hers', she was known to be a postcolonial feminist.

Talking about her personal life, she was married to Pritam Singh. After the partition experience, she expressed her anger on ‘All India Radio ’. She also conveyed her feminist views, indicating that she was not happy with her husband. In the year 1944, a poet and lyricist, Sahir Ludhianvi. She was enticed by him, and so, she gave divorce to her husband, Pritam Singh. But things did not work out between Ludhianvi and her. Amrita’s perspective about love was not guarded like other people of those times. Then, she found love in Imroz, who was an artist and a writer. She did not get married to him but, preferred staying with him. Both of them were so much in love, that their love was reflected in all her writings. She wrote many novels, poetries, and prose. The novel, ‘Amrita Imroz: a love story’ was written on their love life.

She died in Delhi in 2005, with all her loved ones close to her, including, Imroz. Her idea of living and loving fascinates today’s youth and their thoughts, which is what makes her an unforgettable writer with great writings. She wrote many renowned literary works in her career and won many awards. She was a part of several non-profit organizations. The list of her awards includes the Punjab Rattan Award, Sahitya Academy Award, International recognition, etc. Her famous works include Pinjar, Unah di Kahani, Kaal Chetna, Ajj akhaan waris shah nu, etc.
