Dear Villanova Alumni, Parents, and Friends, Welcome to Villanova University’s second annual Business Leaders Forum sponsored by the Villanova School of Business (VSB). I am delighted to welcome and thank our distinguished speakers and panelists who have graciously given their time and talent to participate in the Forum. Their insights into today’s economy from both a policymaker and an industry executive’s perspective are certain to generate a lively discussion. VSB will present its prestigious alumni medallion at the Business Leaders Forum dinner. Congratulations to Daniel M. DiLella ’73 VSB, president and CEO, BPG Properties, Ltd., the 2011 recipient of the Rev. Joseph C. Bartley, OSA Alumni Medallion. The Bartley Alumni Medallion is the highest honor bestowed upon a Villanova School of Business alumnus/a in recognition of outstanding service to his/her community, Villanova University, and the School of Business. Dan is a selfless, generous, and loyal Villanovan, making him a very deserving recipient. It has been quite an eventful year for Villanova University beginning with a successful reaccreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; a record number of incoming student applications; the appointment of Jean Ann Linney, PhD as the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; the launch of Phase I of the Transformation of the Campus Landscape project; and my extensive travels to over 22 cities—more to follow in the fall—to present the University’s new Strategic Plan to alumni, parents, and friends. I would be remiss if I did not formally acknowledge and congratulate James M. Danko, the new president of Butler University. I am extremely grateful for his vision and leadership over the last six years. As we begin the search for the new dean, I feel confident that Interim Dean Kevin D. Clark, PhD will continue to build the momentum and execute VSB’s strategy. Catholic Social Teaching and Global Poverty Conference The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace president Cardinal Peter Turkson was the keynote speaker at the annual conference hosted by Villanova’s Office for Mission and Ministry and the Journal of Catholic Social Thought. The event focused on Catholic Social Teaching’s approach to global poverty.
New Dean for Liberal Arts and Sciences Jean Ann Linney, PhD was appointed dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Linney is an accomplished teacher-scholar with distinguished achievement in teaching, research, and administration.
Student Filmmakers Honored Students from the Center for Social Justice Film received the United Cerebral Palsy 2011 Outstanding Youth Award for the short documentary “Coming off the DL.” The film followed two Villanova students with cerebral palsy who overcame the prejudice and fears of others to excel both in the classroom and as managers for the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Waterhouse Institute Lawrence Waterhouse Jr. ’59 A&S provided a generous gift that launched the Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society (WFI). Through cutting-edge research and student programs, as well as the hands-on involvement of communication scholars and professionals from around the globe, this new institute explores the ethical dimensions of communication and its role in creating social change.
New Dean for Villanova School of Law John Yukio Gotando, JD became the sixth dean of the Villanova School of Law. A distinguished scholar and member of the Villanova community for 16 years, he is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on damages in international law.
Fulbright Awards Four 2011 graduates won Fulbright Teaching Assistantships: Kathleen Devlin (Malaysia), Colleen Knill (South Africa), Mary Kulhowvick (Indonesia), and Tiffany Locke (Germany). The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities to pursue international graduate study, advanced research, and teaching. Awardees teach English in their host countries while becoming fully integrated into the local community.
Global Health Center The College of Nursing launched the Center for Global and Public Health, which aims to leverage the interdisciplinary expertise, resources, and scholarly endeavors of Villanova and its partners to serve as a locus for integrative and experiential educational experiences that examine the relationships between biological, cultural, political, and socioeconomic factors that influence health and illness worldwide.
Campus Transformation Phase I of the three-year Transformation of the Campus initiative began. This project is designed to improve the quality of life for students and community members while enhancing the visitor experience. The goal is to create a campus that is vehicle-free, pedestrian-friendly, more accessible to people with different mobility needs, and more aesthetically beautiful.
Social Entrepreneurship Competition A multidisciplinary team of seven students won first place at the Villanova Social Entrepreneurship Competition (VSEC) for their project, Nova Mobile Health. Their plan sought to bring healthcare services to remote, impoverished villages with limited access to modern technology.

Dear VSB Stakeholders and Friends, I am pleased to serve as VSB’s interim dean for the 2011-12 academic year. I offer hearty congratulations to former Dean James M. Danko for his outstanding leadership and wish him much success as president of Butler University. I was quite fortunate to work closely with Jim on VSB’s strategy these past six years and am excited about the next chapter in VSB’s rise to national prominence. As steward of the #7 ranked undergraduate business school in the nation, please know that I will aggressively execute our strategy, building upon VSB’s momentum, to ensure that we realize our goals. It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to VSB’s 2011 Business Leaders Forum. I am delighted that Charles I. Plosser, president and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, is with us today to present his perspective on the economy from a policy standpoint. Lumen Gentium Award
Bloomberg Businessweek recognized VSB as one of the best undergraduate business schools in the nation with its #7 ranking. VSB performed exceptionally well in a number of categories: #2 in the nation for “Overall Academic Quality;” A+ student grade in “Teaching Quality;” and A student grade in “Job Placement.”
Charles Zech, PhD was awarded the 2010 Lumen Gentium Award by the Conference for Pastoral Planning and Council Development, for extraordinary pastoral leadership and influence on Church programs.
Aspen Institute Case Competition MBA students took second place in the Aspen Institute Business & Society International Case Competition. Nearly 1,000 students from 25 leading business schools participated in the competition, which challenges students to devise corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives for a major organization, taking into consideration profitability and environmental, social, and ethical issues.
Business Without Borders VSB’s Business Without Borders (BWB) student group was named Net Impact Chapter of the Year for 2010. Net Impact is an organization that aims to use business to create a socially and environmentally sustainable world. VSB’s BWB group is one of 48 Net Impact undergraduate chapters in the U.S.
Ray M. Sommerfeld Award Shelley Rhoades-Catanach, PhD was honored with the Ray M. Sommerfeld Outstanding Tax Educator Award.
Journal of Advertising Award Charles R. Taylor, PhD, the John A. Murphy Endowed Chair in Marketing, won the Journal of Advertising’s Best Article Award of 2010 for the paper he coauthored titled “Measuring Soft-Sell versus Hard-Sell Advertising Appeals.”
Warren Buffet VSB was one of 48 schools, out of 200 that applied, to be invited to meet Warren Buffet, primary shareholder, chairman, and CEO of Hathaway Inc.

Lauren Zales ’12 VSB and Tara McHugh ’12 VSB received Net Impact’s Force for Change Award for their work in Nicaragua, where they utilized hydro-electricity to provide 60 households with electricity.
More than 35 VSB faculty members, appearing in over 120 publications and on news programs around the world, offered expert opinions to the news of the day or authored articles based on their research. VSB was featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. VSB faculty also made appearances on nationally televised networks, including the CBS Morning Show and CNBC.

Ronald P. Hill, PhD, the Richard J. and Barbara Naclerio Endowed Chair in Business, received the 2010 Richard W. Pollay Prize for his work in the study of marketing in the public interest.
Professor of finance Michael S. Pagano, PhD became the inaugural Robert J. and Mary Ellen Darretta Endowed Chair in Finance. As chair, Professor Pagano will partner with international scholars and universities and direct curricular and programmatic developments to prepare students for the rapidly changing and increasingly global business community.

DR. CHARLES I. PLOSSER President and Chief Executive Officer Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia
Charles I. Plosser became the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s 10th president and chief executive officer on August 1, 2006. Before coming to Philadelphia, he was the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics and Public Policy and director of the Bradley Policy Research Center at the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, where he also served as dean from 1993 to 2003. He was also a professor of economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Rochester, a senior research associate at the Rochester Center for Economic Research in the university’s College of Arts and Science, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Plosser has lectured to academic and business audiences worldwide on topics ranging from management education to economic and public policy issues. The author of numerous academic articles and a participant in scores of professional seminars and conferences, Plosser has also served as co-editor or associate editor of three prestigious journals of economics and referee for over a dozen others. His research and teaching interests include topics on monetary and fiscal policy, long-term
economic growth, and banking and financial markets, and his articles have appeared in numerous leading economic journals. Plosser earned PhD and MBA degrees from the University of Chicago, and he received a bachelor’s degree in engineering (cum laude) from Vanderbilt University. Plosser has served as a consultant to numerous corporations, including Chase Manhattan Bank, Eastman Kodak Company, and The Wyatt Company, on topics ranging from strategic planning and forecasting to portfolio and pension fund management, capital budgeting, and financial analysis. He has served as an advisory board member of the Rochester New Enterprise Forum, the Metropolitan Advisory Board of Chase Manhattan Bank, and the University Technology Seed Fund, LLC. Plosser served as chairman of the board of directors of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management from 1995 to 1997. From 1996 to 2000, he served on the board of directors of ViaHealth, Inc., where he also served as secretary, member of the Executive Committee, and chair of the Governance Committee.

Lynn Elsenhans joined Sunoco in August 2008. A veteran oil industry executive with domestic and international experience in manufacturing, marketing, and strategic planning, Elsenhans joined Sunoco after 28 years with Royal Dutch Shell. Her last assignment with Shell was as executive vice president, global manufacturing. From 2003 to 2005, Elsenhans served concurrently as president of Shell Oil Company and president and chief executive officer of Shell Oil Products U.S. Elsenhans is on the board of directors of International Paper Company, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and the Texas Medical Center. She serves on the Council of Overseers for the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice and the Business Council for the Arts. She is a trustee of Rice University. Elsenhans graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Science in 1978 and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1980.

James O’Donnell has served as American Eagle Outfitters’ chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors since November 2000. Prior to joining the company, O’Donnell served as president and chief operating officer of Lyte, Inc. From 1997 to 2000, O’Donnell served as director of merchant banking for Colman Capital Advisors, Inc., and as a project consultant for the Everett Koop Foundation. Prior to that, O’Donnell was an owner and chief executive officer of Computer Aided Systems, Inc. From 1980 to 1992, O’Donnell held various executive positions at The Gap Inc., including executive vice president and chief operating officer (1989-92). He was also a member of the board of directors for The Gap Inc, beginning in 1987. O’Donnell graduated from the Villanova School of Business in 1963 and is currently a member of the board of trustees at Villanova University.

Terence O’Toole is the co-managing partner of Tinicum Capital Partners II, LP, a private investment partnership based in New York City.
Neil Irwin writes about the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve for The Washington Post. He has been the newspaper’s lead reporter covering the 2007-09 recession, financial crisis, and government response. He has been at the Post since 2000 and in that span also has covered the Washington area regional economy, real estate development, and Internet companies.
Prior to joining Tinicum in January 2006, O’Toole spent 21 years at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he was a partner, a member of the investment committee and the partnership committee, and the chief operating officer of the principal investment area (PIA)–the private equity investing arm of the firm. O’Toole was one of the founding members of the PIA, and was responsible for a number of the firm’s investments. He is currently a member of the board of Liberman Broadcasting, Inc., R360 Environmental Solutions, Inc., Enesco Holdings, LLC, and Skyway Towers LLC. O’Toole received his undergraduate degree from Villanova University in 1980 and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1983, where he was named the Henry Ford Scholar as the top student in his class. He is currently the chairman of the board of trustees at Villanova and is a trustee of the Pingry School in New Jersey, where he was the chairman of the investment committee. He was a member of the Stanford Business School Trust from 2001 to 2006 and was chair from 2005 to 2006. He was a member of the investment committee of the Goldman Sachs Foundation from 2008 to 2010.
Irwin has won two “Best in Business” awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, in 2005 and 2009 (the latter as part of a group), and one of his articles was published in The Best Business Stories of the Year 2003 anthology. He appears regularly as an analyst on “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer,” CNBC, and MSNBC analyzing economic trends. Washingtonian magazine named him to its list of “Rising Stars” in its “50 Top Journalists 2009” feature. Irwin has an MBA from Columbia University, where he was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Economic and Business Journalism. His undergraduate studies were at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where he is now a member of the college’s board of trustees.

The Villanova School of Business prepares students for success in a global marketplace by presenting real-world information—integrated, fluid, and driven by technology and analytics. Students learn how to solve problems creatively, to lead responsibly, and to understand where their field of study fits within the larger context of global business. The knowledge learned, combined with technical skills, helps students become wellrounded graduates with the tools necessary to be successful in any career path. VSB is ranked #7 in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek in the Best Undergraduate Business Schools category and is ranked second in the nation for “Overall Academic Quality.” Student survey results indicated a grade of A+ in “Teaching Quality” and an A in “Job Placement.” The Clay Center
Majors and Minors
The Clay Center at VSB provides undergraduate students with program services to support academic, personal, and professional growth. The Clay Center serves as a “one-stop shop” offering academic advising and planning, support for internships and CoOps, and professional development opportunities. These support services provide institutional resources to help students achieve their goals.
VSB undergraduates have the option of six majors: Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, International Business, and Real Estate (co-majors). Any of these can be combined with one or more of the available 10 minors, which include Business Law and Corporate Governance, Entrepreneurship, and Business Analytics.
Curriculum
VSB welcomed 457 incoming freshman for the Class of 2015, 36 of whom are honors students. Seventy-five percent of the Class of 2011 participated in at least one internship or CoOp, and 55 percent of the class studied abroad at least once.
The innovative VSB curriculum—with integrated teamtaught courses—requires students to utilize a higher level of thinking and challenges them to integrate the disciplines of finance and accounting and marketing and management. Students study business fundamentals, explore new issues in real time, and complete corporate projects. VSB’s curriculum is challenging and rigorous, designed to prepare students for success in the real world of global business. Students have a wide range of options for major and minor courses of study—along with study abroad opportunities and technological resources including the internationally recognized VSB Applied Finance Lab.

Career Placement for Graduates The most recent career placement statistics for VSB Class of 2010 illustrate exceptional student talent. Six months after graduation, 97 percent of business students were employed at a median base salary of $53,000 per year or are attending graduate school. • 85 percent secured full-time employment • 9 percent were attending graduate school as full-time students • 3 percent had secured part-time employment and/or were attending part-time graduate school

The Villanova MBA The Villanova MBA program, offered in both a flexible and an accelerated format (the Flex Track and the Fast Track), allows students to make progress toward degree completion while taking lessons back to the office for immediate impact. Classes are offered on Villanova’s main campus, as well as in center city Philadelphia.
The Villanova Executive MBA Designed for the more experienced professional, the Executive MBA program encourages students to think differently, to collaborate with peers, and to partner with faculty—all of which leads to a transformation of emerging executive leaders into effective executive leaders.
Executive Education VSB’s top faculty can help rising executives face an increasingly global business environment, drive organizational change, and operate in an environment that continuously evolves. Master of Accountancy & Master of Science in Finance The Master of Accountancy (MAC) and Master of Science in Finance specialized programs prepare young professionals for a career in accounting, taxation, and finance through intense, deep learning and hands-on application in these areas. Both degrees offer a MAC/MSF to MBA option, enabling students to transfer some of their specialized coursework into the MBA program.
Master of Science in Church Management The Master of Science in Church Management degree is designed to meet the needs of a national student body of church leaders and managers, including parish business managers; managers of diocesan and religious order departments; and those engaged in managing churchrelated social service ministries. This dynamic, unique degree is offered exclusively online.
In addition to custom programs, VSB offers the Mini-MBA program. This program provides an overview of business to individuals who are considering pursuing an MBA or who want to build knowledge bases to be more effective in their current roles.

The Dean’s Fund for Strategic Initiatives helps to provide Villanova School of Business students with a rigorous curriculum, top-notch faculty, professional development opportunities and enables VSB to be entrepreneurial by fostering innovation, allowing the college to seize opportunities when they arise and to respond to pressing needs. In April 2010 the Center for Business Analytics was created, thanks, in part, to the dean’s fund for strategic initiatives. The center exposes students to analytics, illustrates its relevance, and adds an undergraduate minor to VSB’s portfolio. Businesses use analytics to price their products, keep tabs on inventory, and manage personnel, using data and analysis to boost efficiency, customer loyalty, and profits while reducing risk. The Fund also supports quality faculty. VSB faculty members are widely recognized for excellence in both teaching and research. Over 90 percent of faculty members hold the highest degree in their respective discipline. Ours is a multidimensional faculty that holds a wealth of real-world experience from careers in finance, banking, sales, management, marketing, accounting, consulting, and other fields. VSB students benefit from many prominent speakers, have access to top-level executives, and gain invaluable skills from professional development and networking events held on campus. It is this Fund that helps to make these events and many others possible.

ACADEMIC CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE
CENTER FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP The Center for Global Leadership (CGL) contributes to the development of VSB’s global strategy, emphasizing integrated international business (IB) studies and responsible global leadership; serves as a source of new ideas and innovations for VSB’s international curricular and extracurricular initiatives and programs; and acts as a catalyst for faculty research and innovation in IB practice and responsible global leadership. In 2011, 38 percent of VSB’s graduating seniors had an International Business co-major or minor (up from 32 percent in 2010) and 55 percent participated in foreign study (up from 45 percent in 2010), underscoring the impact of CGL’s leadership. In addition to encouraging broad participation in global programs, CGL increasingly emphasizes emerging markets—especially the BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India, and China (but also smaller developing countries)—because these economies are expected to lead global growth and prosperity in the future.
Center Highlights and Accomplishments • CGL initiated the Global Leadership Fellows program. Beginning Fall 2011 (for the graduating class of 2015), a select group of VSB students will have the opportunity to integrate global leadership and international experiences throughout their undergraduate experience. • CGL works with the student-led International Business Society (IBS), which exposes VSB students to international career and professional opportunities, and Business Without Borders, a student group dedicated to demonstrating how business skills can benefit local and global communities through various service-oriented projects and initiatives. Both of these organizations work closely with CGL. • CGL supported visits by Elkanah Odembo, Kenyan Ambassador to the United States, and Fr. Joseph Phillipe, a Haitian Spiritan priest who has dedicated his life to helping the poor of Haiti help themselves. • CGL co-sponsored the second annual Villanova Leadership Summit, which focused on globalization. THE DANIEL M. DILELLA CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate was established to provide outstanding academic and professional development opportunities to Villanova students in the field of real estate. The center supports faculty research and teaching, ensuring relevance in the curriculum through the incorporation of site visits, experiential learning projects, industry-standard tools, and the perspectives of industry experts. The center offers an undergraduate co-major and minor in real estate—with real estate focused courses including investments, law, development, modeling, accounting, capital markets, and economics—and a real estate specialization in the Villanova MBA program. The center also supports VSB’s student Real Estate Society. The center connects and mobilizes the Villanova real estate community—through educational programs, thought leadership initiatives, and networking events—to expand the horizons of a new generation of real estate leaders and to generate vibrant conversations on issues facing the real estate industry.
Center Highlights and Accomplishments • The Villanova Real Estate Challenge is a national real estate development case competition for students from top undergraduate real estate programs in the United States. Hosted at VSB, the Challenge provides national recognition for Villanova’s real estate program among both industry and academic audiences. While there are many graduate real estate case competitions, the Villanova Real Estate Challenge holds the distinction of being the largest competition in the nation available to undergraduate students. • The center serves as a thought leadership resource and in 2011 sponsored discussions on topics including challenges of the retail sector and public vs. private ownership within the hospitality sector. • The annual Commercial Real Estate Career Conference brings top employers to campus to connect students with career and mentorship opportunities. Industry partners provide students with valuable professional experience through the Villanova Real Estate Internship Program and recruit Villanova students for full-time positions after graduation. • The annual real estate football tailgate provides an informal networking opportunity for alumni, parents, corporate partners, faculty, and students interested in real estate. • The DiLella Center for Real Estate recently launched its membership program to provide an opportunity for the Villanova real estate community to connect and engage. CENTER FOR MARKETING AND PUBLIC POLICY RESEARCH The Center for Marketing and Public Policy Research tests the intended and unintended consequences of government regulation on business, consumers, and society. The center leverages Villanova’s strong international reputation, faculty, and executive network in the business and policy arena to provide research that guides business and regulatory processes while giving students unique networking and consulting experiences that accelerate their career development cycle. The center also encourages development of unique curricular initiatives with its advisory board. In 2010, the center expanded into a series of Strategic Business Units (SBUs) led by Villanova faculty.
Center Highlights and Accomplishments
Students have opportunities for professional development through the center’s Ambassador Program. The domestic program seeks to give students a unique experience in Washington, D.C., through continuous engagement with Capitol Hill, while the international program sends students to Rome for a series of high-level business and political meetings, client interactions, and internships in organizations such as the Italian Parliament.
• The Marketing and Advertising Practice SBU, which supports the International Journal of Advertising, has taken lead roles in examining social media, SMS, and MMS effectiveness in the marketplace.
• The Financial Services SBU held a series of high-level conferences in New York City that examined the ongoing changes in the financial services industry. • The Healthcare SBU established a curricular and joint research development initiative with the Villanova College of Nursing. • The Domestic Policy SBU conducted an international doctoral student workshop in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with staff at the U.S. Treasury.
• The Political Science SBU is a new collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences that will conduct electoral studies and polling initiatives during the 2012 election cycle. • The center added three new innovative courses, taught in conjunction with advisory council members. One of these, Brand Valuation and Government Relations, introduces students to the positive or negative impacts of government intervention to corporate valuations and growth. • The center hosted the annual American Marketing Association (AMA) Marketing & Public Policy Conference, which addressed major business and public policy issues, introduced cutting-edge research, and provided thoughtful academic discussion. • The center works closely with Capitol Hill through a supportive advisory board that includes Brett Loper, senior policy director for Speaker John Boehner, Congressman Jim Gerlach, and Congressman Pat Meehan. www.villanova.edu/business/excellence/marketing

CENTER FOR INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, & ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center) is at the forefront of Villanova University’s strategy to foster cross-college and interdisciplinary opportunities for the collaborative pursuit of knowledge. The ICE Center advances the Augustinian vision by embedding creative problem solving more deeply in the Villanova culture through the development and promotion of initiatives in the related areas of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. While located within VSB and founded upon one of its four strategic pillars—innovation—the ICE Center’s mandate is unique in its cross-college and primary focus on the creative and innovative skills needed to identify and act upon new knowledge and ideas. Fundamental to new ventures, these entrepreneurial skills are increasingly recognized as being central to success and highly sought after by existing organizations of all types—large/small, profit/not-for-profit. In recent surveys of executives, the ability to think entrepreneurially was considered the most important leadership characteristic, and more than 60 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs indicate that the ability to think creatively is even more important than intelligence. While traditional entrepreneurship in the form of startup organizations remains a central driver of economic growth, more than 70 percent of existing organizations cite innovation and “intrapreneurship” as key to their future growth and success. The ICE Center strives to support traditional entrepreneurship and startups, but its broader mission is to symbolize Villanova’s commitment to nurturing creative and innovative thinkers. Villanovans are already known to be among the best, most well-rounded students, and the ICE Center seeks to provide opportunities to develop and highlight their entrepreneurial spirit as well.
Center Highlights and Accomplishments • Mobile Application Development and Commercialization Course: The ICE Center brought together and supported a team of faculty from the colleges of Engineering, Business, and Liberal Arts and Sciences to develop and implement this unique course focused on the emerging multi-billion dollar mobile application industry. Working in teams of three—one from each college—students developed a working mobile application and wrote an accompanying business plan. Verizon Wireless provided the latest Smartphones, service, and technical support, as well as guest speakers. According to Verizon, the course, along with one at the University of California, Berkeley, was one of the two most innovative in the country to focus on mobile applications. • ICE CaPS: The ICE Center and Villanova’s Office of Student Life launched the Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship Certificate Program for Sophomores (ICE CaPS). Students from all four undergraduate colleges applied to participate in this series of workshops and experiences designed to enable them to develop their creative and innovative spirit within a learning community. THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF CHURCH MANAGEMENT The Center for the Study of Church Management offers educational programs and conducts research in the areas of leadership and management as they apply to the Catholic Church and its institutions. Its constituents include individuals in church leadership and administrative roles who are seeking to become better stewards of church resources by improving their leadership and management skills. The Church is not a business, but it does have a stewardship responsibility to use its resources effectively. This frequently requires the use of sound leadership and management techniques that are not typically taught to clergy and lay leaders in the Church.

Center Highlights and Accomplishments • Sponsored two workshops, on Civil Law for parishes (15 registrants) and on Parish Technology (250 registrants). • Co-sponsored a three-day conference, along with the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, on “Best Practices in Catholic Church Ministry Performance Management.” Presentations were made by business school professors, seminary professors, and practitioners (53 registrants). • Conducts a Summer Church Management Institute, an annual week-long intensive executive education experience designed for leaders in diocesan and religious order management positions (97 participants since 2006). • Offered on-site church management programs in two dioceses in 2011, presenting on topics chosen by the dioceses (250 priests). • Manages the Master of Science in Church Management program, an innovative, online twoyear graduate business program that provides students with a high-level skill set in church management. The program is designed for clergy and laypeople who are interested in strengthening their ability to contribute to the Church’s mission but who require the convenience of an online program (29 graduates in first two cohorts). • Distributes a quarterly newsletter electronically to more than 11,000 parishes and individuals. • Coming this fall: a series of webinars on 12 church management topics, leading to a certificate in church management in partnership with Our Sunday Visitor. www.villanova.edu/business/excellence/churchmgmt

CENTER FOR BUSINESS ANALYTICS The Center for Business Analytics (CBA) leads the development of the analytical capabilities of all VSB students so that graduates become known for this critical business skill in the marketplace, while VSB’s crossdisciplinary faculty and staff become recognized for excellence in analytics education, practice, and research. The CBA’s mission directly supports the role of analytics/ technology as one of the four pillars of VSB’s strategy. Most companies have massive amounts of data at their disposal, yet fail to utilize it in any meaningful way. But powerful new business trends in technology and analytical methodologies enable many firms to aggressively leverage their data in key business decisions and processes, with impressive results. Rather than “going with their gut” when pricing products, maintaining inventory, or hiring talent, managers in these firms use data, analysis, and systematic reasoning to improve efficiency, risk management, and profits. Going forward, the center plans to increase participation of undergraduate students in analytics internships, the business analytics minor, encourage faculty research in analytics, and grow its advisory council.
Center Highlights and Accomplishments • CBA hosts analytics thought leaders and top executives who are mature, advanced users of analytics. These invited guests typically meet with faculty associates and the advisory council before addressing faculty, students, and business guests in a lecture format. • In 2010-11, the CBA hosted Thornton May, noted author, educator, and futurist; and Chris McCann, president of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, a recognized leader in the use of customer analytics. • CBA hosted roundtable sessions at the world headquarters of Aramark and Campbell’s Soup to disseminate best practices and explore linkages with VSB’s curriculum. These sessions featured presentations by business executives from a variety of firms and were attended by faculty, business guests, and select students. • The undergraduate core quantitative requirements now include business analytics and MBA analytics electives. After voluntarily raising funds for communities hurt by Katrina, they apply tactics learned in class to strategically direct their donations.
