FROM THE VSB DEAN Dear Villanova Alumni, Parents and Friends, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2013 Villanova University Business Leaders Forum! This fourth annual Forum—Collaborate to Compete—will showcase collaborative business models and approaches across a range of sectors and organizations, including global partnerships, technological cooperation, innovation, and financial management. We will also share how Villanova leverages collaboration to further its educational mission. I look forward to a rich dialogue around this topic and continuing these conversations in the classroom as we prepare students for future challenges in a competitive marketplace. We have an exciting program beginning with keynote speaker Bill McDermott, co-CEO of SAP AG. Bill is a member of my Dean’s Advisory Council and an outstanding leader of SAP and the IT industry. You will also hear from a distinguished industry panel as well as engage in an interactive session with faculty and students focusing on collaboration within VSB and across the University’s colleges. Congratulations to VSB alumnus and good friend, Daniel Hogarty Jr. ’61 VSB, recipient of the prestigious 2013 Rev. Joseph C. Bartley, OSA Alumni Medallion. Dan has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in banking and is a loyal Villanova alumnus. Dan was the catalyst behind VSB’s Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center) and provided the much-needed seed money to launch the ICE Center. I am pleased and honored to recognize Dan’s accomplishments and generosity. I hope this Forum presents an opportunity for you to connect meaningfully with Villanova and VSB as well as each other. As we near the official launch of the University’s capital campaign on October 26, I look forward to your continued partnership and collaboration as we strive together to reach VSB’s full potential. I am deeply grateful for your support of the University, VSB and me. Warm regards,

Academic Centers of Excellence
The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate was established to provide outstanding academic and professional development opportunities to Villanova students in the field of real estate. Our real estate programs strive to deepen students’ understanding of the technical components of the real estate industry, of their social responsibilities as Sheppards of land and environment and of the importance of creating opportunities for service and giving whenever possible. The center supports faculty research and teaching, ensuring relevance in the curriculum through the incorporation of site visits, experiential learning projects, industry-standard tools and the perspectives of industry experts. The center offers an undergraduate co-major and minor in real estate—with real estate focused courses including investments, law, development, modeling, accounting, capital markets and economics—and a real estate specialization within the Villanova MBA program. The center connects and mobilizes the Villanova real estate community—through educational programs, thought leadership initiatives and networking events— to expand the horizons of a new generation of real estate leaders and to generate vibrant conversations among real estate professionals on issues facing the industry. How the DiLella Center Collaborates to Compete • As part of our strategic planning process, David Hartzell, professor and director of Kenan Flagler’s Wood/Bell Center for Real Estate at UNC, joined Villanova for six weeks. During the time spent on campus Dr. Hartzell participated in classes, programs and the fall advisory council meeting. Having developed a top-notch program at UNC, Dr. Hartzell was able to provide valuable feedback on the center’s current offerings and to propose pathways for growth.
• The DiLella Center for Real Estate and the Center for Global Leadership worked together to deliver a distinguished panel of international real estate experts during the fall semester. Speakers included David Watkins, CFA (Heitman), Matthew McDevitt (BioMed Realty), Jonathan Mehlman (KPMG Corporate Finance), Joseph Smith, CFA (CBRE Clarion) and David Hartzell, Wood/Bell professor and director of the Kenan-Flagler Business Schools Center for Real Estate Development as moderator. • The DiLella Center for Real Estate membership program was established fall 2011 to provide opportunities for Villanova real estate community members to connect and engage. The program offers members access to industry events and conversations, faculty research briefings and special publications, including student résumé books. • The Villanova Real Estate Challenge is a national real estate development case competition for students from up to 16 of the top undergraduate real estate programs in the United States. Hosted by VSB, the Challenge provides national recognition for Villanova’s real estate program among both industry and academic audiences and serves as a forum for relationship development among students and professionals. • The annual Commercial Real Estate Career Conference brings top employers to campus to connect students with career and mentorship opportunities. A panel of recent grads shared insights gained during their first few months of employment, and Bill Hankowsky, CEO of Liberty Property Trust, provided the keynote presentation by sharing life lessons with current students and young professionals. Over 60 real estate professionals were on hand to discuss valuable professional opportunities available through the Villanova Real Estate Internship Program and beyond graduation. Center for Business Analytics The Center for Business Analytics (CBA) leads the development of analytical capabilities of Villanova School of Business undergraduate and graduate students. The CBA is organized around the 3 pillars of Curriculum, Research and Practice:
2012-2013 CBA Highlights
Curriculum
• There are over 140 VSB undergraduate students enrolled in the business analytics minor. The minor was launched in April 2012.
The CBA’s curriculum goals and activities provide support to increase and improve the analytics-oriented components of VSB undergraduate and graduate courses, and to produce students competent in current analytics practice and application. Examples of curricular initiatives include the required sophomore Business Analytics course, the 3-course undergraduate analytics minor, and a mix of MBA analytics electives.
Research The research goals and activities of the CBA focus on emerging analytics practitioner issues identified by the CBA Advisory Council, with Villanova faculty collaborating with firms and analytics professionals throughout the projects.
Practice The practice goals and activities of the CBA are grounded in collaborative interaction with VSB and the business community. Practice initiatives include the following: • Speakers: The CBA has developed a range of speaker programs that provide opportunities for analytics thought leaders and practitioners to share their insights with students, faculty and professionals. • Advisory Council (AC): The AC is an executive forum that assists CBA leadership in connecting theory to practice. The AC also provides a vehicle for its members to remain current in their knowledge of analytics and to enhance the analytical capabilities of their organizations. • Consulting projects and internships: The CBA provides VSB students opportunities to develop hands-on analytics experience through paid consulting projects and internships. • Student organizations: The CBA provides financial and program support to the undergraduate Business Analytics Society.

VILLANOVA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
• In the 2012-2013 year all VSB sophomores took “Business Analytics”, a new required course designed to give students exposure various methods to analyze and use data to drive improved business decision making.
• The CBA, the IBM Institute for Business Value and IBM Big Data Industry Marketing continued a research project to develop a predictive model of an organization’s decision to invest in analytics, and to determine the benefits and ROI resulting from investing in analytics software and services. • The CBA and CBA Advisory Council firms SAP and Vertex continued a research project to analyze the extent to which Business Intelligence tasks can be performed on different computing devices (laptop, tablet, smart phone) throughout the cloud. • The CBA hosted Tom Davenport, author of “Competing on Analytics” and “Analytics at Work” and Alicia Rankin, head of research and customer insights for the NFL, as speakers in the popular “Analytics Thought Leader Lecture” series. Their lectures to students, faculty and business guests were preceded by lunch and in-depth discussions with the CBA Advisory Council and faculty associates. • The Center for Business Analytics started developing a consulting practice that utilizes analytics to drive business improvement. The consulting project teams are staffed by analytics students who are mentored and managed by experienced professionals and faculty. In the initial consulting project, the CBA was engaged by PECO to analyze customer call data to develop recommendations to improve the forecasting process for PECO’s customer care call centers. • The CBA sponsored a process improvement workshop facilitated by Valeocon Management Consulting for members of the Business Analytics Society. • The CBA sponsored a team of MBA students who participated in the Sports Analytics Case Competition at the 2013 MIT Sports Analytics Conference. Based on the success of this initiative, the CBA will sponsor undergraduate and graduate case competition teams at future conferences.

Center for Church Management & Business Ethics Villanova’s Center for the Study of Church Management has been reconfigured into the Center for Church Management and Business Ethics. In addition to performing research and conducting both non-credit and for-credit programs in church management, the Center will now also coordinate all business ethics activities within the Villanova School of Business. Collaboration will be a critical component of both of the Center’s complementary roles. The Center has always seen collaboration as a key element of achieving its mission. The Center has collaborated with Our Sunday Visitor to provide a national certificate program for church managers via a series of webinars. Collaboration with individual dioceses has resulted in a series of on-site workshops for diocesan clergy and an agreement with the Camden diocese to commit to sending students every year to the MS in Church Management program. Recently, the Center has collaborated with St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia to provide “The Seminarian Institute on Parish Leadership” , providing management education to Seminarians in three local dioceses. The Center has worked on a number of projects with the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management. The Center is currently working on a collaborative effort with Catholic Relief Services to provide management training to its staff located across the globe. In its research, the Center has collaborated with Georgetown’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate on a number of projects, including a co-authored book, Best Practices in Parish Pastoral and Finance Councils. The Center has just concluded a Lilly Endowment funded collaboration with five US professional Catholic organizations as part of the “Emerging Models in Parish Leadership” initiative. Earlier research collaborations included partners such as the Philadelphia Archdiocese’s Office for Research and Planning and faculty from St. Joseph’s University. Since Business Ethics cuts across every business discipline and impacts every organization, collaborations in that area are inevitable. The Center for Church Management has added an ethics component to its charge that is designed to focus

the attention of VSB on the larger moral responsibilities of business to serve the common good. While ethics is a regular element of business education throughout the world, VSB will chart a unique path in accordance with its Roman Catholic and Augustinian heritage. This perspective provides a novel set of guidelines for business practice that are grounded in our love for Jesus Christ and His command that we serve others as an extension of that love. Note that our founder, St. Augustine, articulated several arguments in order to ensure that we might recognize our obligation to give the totality of who we are to serving others, with an emphasis on those in need. St. Thomas of Villanova also emphasized this obligation to serve the poor with our gifts and graces, as he did throughout his life. His deeds matched his words, and he generously gave to hundreds of individuals and families who made their way to him each day to receive sustenance for their very survival. His legacy lives on in VSB, where our students give their time and talent to serve similar causes. As a consequence of this powerful and directive history, VSB offers several courses, enters into case competitions, and provides myriad opportunities to serve, demonstrating our enduring commitment to the larger University mission. Taken together, these foci demonstrate that our Catholic faith within an Augustinian tradition compels us to work for the common good, to employ our abilities so that others benefit from our efforts, and to place an emphasis on serving the most vulnerable people in our society. As a consequence, four initial avenues will be pursued during the academic year 2013-2014: (1) development of new transdisciplinary courses that will start with Philosophy of the Business Enterprise; (2) integration of the MBA Nonprofit Consulting Practicum and its affiliated social enterprises into the larger fabric of VSB; (3) creation of new programming at SCI Graterford concentrating on personal and professional skills for leading a better life; and (4) extension of the South Philadelphia Youth Entrepreneurship Program to other impoverished sections of the city. Each of these initiatives will engage and enrich various student, staff, and faculty communities both within VSB and across Villanova University. Further, census of ethics-based programming and activities currently underway in VSB will occur and the results chronicled and integrated into the life of the Center.
