STADIUM AND PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN, BANGALORE SEMESTER 7

The site was in the heart of the city, within the complex of the already existing Kanteerva Stadium. The site was surrounded by three types of areas- an elite residential area, a commercial area and a public park (Cubbon Park). The requirement for the project was to create a public space as well as designing an indoor stadium. Since the site was one of a stadium, it wasn’t typical for the public to enter the site. Another drawback of the site was the the four meter height difference between the road and the site. The solution I provided was to raise a portion of the site to form a pedestrian link between the two sections of road so that people are drawn into the site. Once they enter the site the public space can be percieved, gradual ramps using the existing earth of the site leading to a central square having an amphitheatre, restaurant and sports shop. Escalators and lifts also lead to the parking in the basement.

A law school in the heart of the city of Bangalore, the idea for the academic block was derived from the concept of balance. The design aims to merge the outside with the inside, while providing a percievable axis of movement for the users. The path starts at the library-the most important part of law school- and terminates with an amphitheater. A pause point after the library creates the start of the secondary axis leading to the informal areas. The use of louvered openings reduces the need for air-conditioning in the temperate climate of Bangalore. The classrooms are split into two levels accessed from the pause point, creating the height dierence required for the amphitheatre to start at the lower level. Cafeteria

PLAN AT ENTRY LEVEL (+10M)
The hotel was to be designed in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. Having just been there on a college trip, I knew from visiting the site that the rock had the ability to really draw one’s attention to it visually. The site being within the tourist spot, I used this quality of the rock as the focus of design in the project. The lobby of the hotel is placed on an upper level such that the sight of the rock forms a visual impact on entering the hotel. The walkway that connects the lobby to the rooms is also open towards the side of the rock so that the user really takes in the surroundings. The three meter contour difference along the site was used by flattening it out at two levels such that there was a direct three meter height difference between the lobby area, and the public amenities below. Inclined walkways create the additional height difference required for the rooms of the hotel. From the lobby, the user uses the ramp tp directly access the upper floor of the hotel. The restaurant and other facilities lie on the lower level, accesed via the hotel staircase. As typical to other hotels in Sri Lanks, waterbodies and pergola-ed walkways are used in abundance.

SUSTAINABLE FANBOX, RIO DE JANEIRO COMPETITION, SEMESTER 7
PERFORMACE AREA
SHELL
SEATING
SCREEN
The brief was to design a sustainable fanbox for the Rio Olympics which would maintain the spirit of the Games. The proposal was an interpretation of the cauldron- an identifiable sympol of the commencement of the Olympics. The structure takes the form of this cauldron, making it identifiable to the by-passer as a symbol of the games. The tilt of the cauldron provides the raking for the seating and with the curves screen tries to simulate the feeling of watching the games in the stadium. The area behind the amphitheater is a stage for performances, another interactive measure to draw the public to the fanbox. This part of the fanbox sits closest to the shoreline. Under the seating is a display area and information center about the history of the Games. The tensile roofing flares upwards, acting as the flames of the ‘cauldron’.
