IEC 309 PIN AND SLEEVE CONFIGURATION AND COLOR-CODING STANDARD CONTACT POSITIONS
The grounding contact position is based on a clock face. With the keyway at bottom, the female grounding contact will appear at one of the 12 clock positions. Example: All 480V AC receptacles and connectors, regardless of amperage, have their grounding sleeve at 7 o’clock (which puts the grounding pin on all mating plugs and inlets at 5 o’clock).
VOLTAGE RATING COLOR-CODE
The housings of every device in a particular voltage group are identical in color for instant identification. Example: All 480V AC devices are red, and all 250V AC devices are blue.
Amperage Rating Identification
Amperage differences can be identified by the relative sizes of the devices. Smallest is 20A, and largest is 60A.
