[OBJECTIVES OF WORKS]

[CONTENT]

[Placemaking for uniting and diversifying] In the first half of this six-year landscape architecture journey, I was focusing on place-making for uniting and diversifying, that is to help solve some of the social issues together with the environmental issue through the approach of landscape design. To achieve this goal, I participated in projects in some ethnic minority autonomous regions in China and Ethiopian community in Seattle to help with social integration, as the 2rd-4th work presents in this portfolio.

[Community Gateway on 15th ave.E]

[Placemaking for storytelling] For the latest part of this journey my design objective switched to creating once in a lifetime experience and human-centered place-making. Participatory design is one of my study focus that I have developed a game-like experience for helping engage young people in public participation. Also, I figured the subtle connection between virtual and built environment, that some of the playful and memorable experience could also be found other than fiction.

Site: William Place Park, Seattle, WA

Tools used: Rhino; Adobe suites; Lumion

Instructor: Nancy Rottle

The restrictions and opportunities of the isolated William Place make it intriguing to me: how might we help transfer a problematic piece of land into a community gateway? Though recognized as an unsafe place by residents because of traffic and shades, William Place has more potentials to become a center of 15th Ave E from the commercial, ecological and social perspectives. Resources as adjacent Safeway, abundant greeneries nearby, and transit stop on site make it possible for a prospective public space. Project Location + Picture of site and survey result

Step 1

01 isolated park

According to the survey, William Place is the most problematic area around 15th ave E neighborhood because of awkward J-walk and the thick shade of the park. Step 2

02 synthesize resource

By synthesizing the resources like green, commercial, and view,. Rethinking the traffic circulation around William Place. Step 3

03 expand green and realign streets

By realigning street at the same time expanding the greenery, creating a community gateway as a form of public green space. Step 4

04 develop a center

Peel up a corner of the green space to form a platform for the great view, at the same time create community center underneath. Step 5

05 residential/ commercial balance 6

Add more residential with live-work space, activate the alley as a commercial catalyst.

Purpose and Objectives: Ningxia is a developing province with Yellow River’s upstream passing through, which brings a unique natural and cultural resource to Ningxia. However, the site’s geological condition -a flow of water carrying a huge amount of sandworsening in recent years, further threatening the fragile hydrological environment downstream of Yellow River in other provinces of China.
