HANDMADE LOVE

It’s been a big month for Team Mollie! We held our third annual Handmade Awards in London on 7th July, and were overwhelmed by the talent on display. We owe a huge thank you to all our finalists and judges (including the lovely Harriet and Rosie of Tatty Devine, pictured here with the team) for making it such a fantastic day. Discover our amazing winners on page 40. If this year’s awards taught us one thing, it’s to have confidence in your creativity – something we’ve tried to capture with this issue’s makes. Try loom-free weaving on page 55, reinvent foraged beach treasures on page 32, and get ready for autumn with our foxy cover project on page 18. Don’t forget to share your makes using #molliemakers.

Describe your style in a few words. Colourful, playful, and always with a twist on heritage style.

Celebrating heritage with…

KATIE JONES Yarn-loving London designer Katie Jones, a “half fashion, half crafty” go-getting gal, shares her passion for life, art and family Words: LARA WATSON Photographs: FIONA MURRAY

Katie Jones comes from a small village in West Sussex where everyone made things. Her granddad taught her to ‘turn a heel’ when she started knitting as a child and she “customised everything” in her teens. In fact, a career in fashion never crossed her mind, so typical was her crafty upbringing. “I didn’t know you could do this for a job!” she laughs. Taking creative A-levels changed everything, and she pursued her talent through the London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, to the studios of John Galliano and Diane 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 70

von Furstenberg. A key moment came when researching the dress of a Papua New Guinea tribe. “During the Second World War they made their own versions of military uniforms, enthralled by the soldiers stationed there. I became fascinated with using what you have to recreate something you revere.” Tribeswoman crocheting alongside family became the basis of one of her first student collections, and this theme is still echoed today as Katie’s mum currently works with her and her team. We visited her studio to find out more.

Why is the concept of heritage important to your work? I’m so inspired by the older generations of my family and like to say I had an older lady for everything growing up. My greataunt got me my first sewing machine at 11 and my mum and granny taught me how to crochet and knit. I like to recreate techniques and stitches they used – my latest collection celebrates Scottish textiles such as Arans, tweeds and cable knits, with a girly, colourful interpretation. A huge part of what I do is grounded in sustainability, which also links into heritage. We work with fashion companies to use offcuts and waste that would otherwise end up in the bin, one being a family factory in Leicester that makes Arans. Recently we’ve been given lots of lightweight wools to work with so we’ve used them to make our own tweeds. How does working sustainably change your creative approach? It means designing becomes a back and forth process – we look at the materials we have to work with and go from there. It also makes you try things that might not necessarily be in your comfort zone, such

as having a lot of one colour you wouldn’t normally use. Designing becomes a puzzle to solve, season to season, but I get really inspired by the idea of making something from nothing. It’s very hands on. I research the material and find imagery, then we make samples. Normally I can loosely see how it could work, but I need to make it to explore it. Then we create a few core pieces and the collection grows from there. We’re in our sixth season and our identity has emerged – we always have an Aran in winter, always a twist on a leather jacket,

always a multi-coloured crochet piece. My process is changing now, as I’m starting to develop a bit more of a business head. What’s been the biggest struggle in getting your business off the ground? Personally, I think it’s been bridging hobby and job. Also, knitting and crochet take a long time! In today’s fashion industry, so much is made abroad because labour is cheap. This means pricing things accurately is a very difficult thing – you might think a piece only took you ten hours to make,
