Mini house fairy lights

Holidays are coming! So we’ve got an issue full of gifts to make, as well as styling ideas to get cracking with. Most are pretty speedy, and with a little planning, it’s totally doable to gift our slightly more advanced project too – the Morrocan-style pouffe on page 63 will stretch your skills if you already sew. Not sure where to start? I suggest you make a cuppa and flick to page 42. Debee Ruiz’s advent calendar is a riot – each handmade envelope filled with the kind of goodies we all go mad for – haberdashery and stationery! Which brings me to our 2015 calendar. Be inspired all year round with super-blogger Will Taylor. And diary date stickers, too? Yup. We couldn’t resist.

How would you describe each of your styles in a few words? Buddug Vintage-inspired, reworked and transformed into something new. Littered with words and quotes that have meaning. Jessie Designed for a sense of purpose and function. Timeless yet always evolving.

tea and a chat with…

Jessie and Buddug Found objects, overheard conversations and Welsh mountains are just a few of the things inspiring this eclectic London design duo Words: sian williams Photographs: Bridget Peirson

The desire to bring ‘a little bit of Welsh countryside to the city’ was what inspired old art school pals Jessie Chorley and Buddug Wyn Humphreys to start up a business together. After first selling their jewellery from a humble tabletop stall in London’s Broadway Market, the duo eventually set up J & B The Shop in a space on the East End’s vibrant Columbia Road in summer 2010 and haven’t looked back since. Originally from Snowdonia, North Wales, the pair met while studying an art foundation course. They went 28 MOLLIEMAKES.com 46

their separate ways – Jessie to study textiles at Goldsmiths University and Buddug (pronounced Bithig) a BA in jewellery and silversmithing at London Metropolitan – but remained in touch and made a pact to work together once they’d graduated. Although their skills – Jessie’s in sewing and Buddug’s in jewellery – are diverse, they complement each other wonderfully. Both are determined to keep traditional crafts alive and insist on making everything by hand. We sat down for a chat about their creative journeys.

What are you both reading at the moment? Jessie The books currently on my bedside table are A First Book of Nature by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Mark Hearld, and Quentin Bell: A Man of Many Arts, published by the Charleston Trust. Buddug I’m reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and I’ve just recently finished When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, a semi-autobiographical book by Judith Kerr which I loved. Name your top three creative blogs? Jessie There are a few favourites I follow. I really like photographer Kirstin Perers (www.thisis50.me). Her site is dedicated to women who have turned 50, and I like the way she portrays women at this important milestone in their lives. Another favourite is Erin Shine Stitches (www.erinshinestitches. blogspot.co.uk) – it’s jolly, fun and has a real sense of an individual just being happy and enjoying making things. Buddug Junkaholique (www.junkaholique.

I like the humour in her work and how, like us, she’s captivated by found objects. What’s a typical working day like for each of you? Jessie Generally, I’ll spend the first half of the week working in my studio in Hackney Wick. I arrive at eight in the morning as I tend to be most creative and productive

during the first part of the day. I’ll make things until lunchtime and then process and pack orders, work on commissions or head to the post office. Studio days are frequently broken up with my private workshop bookings, so I’ll do more making one week to keep on top of things and then head off for a week or weekend away teaching. Buddug For me, each week is so different depending on what commissions or exhibitions I have on. I get up early to check emails and, when I’m in London, I’ll take a bus to my studio in Hackney and grab

At Danielle’s bright, pastelinspired home, Christmas is a kitsch family affair Words: judith wilson Photography: danielle thompson

Think Christmas, and it’s odds-on you’ll picture red, green and gold, the traditional colours of the festive season. For Danielle Thompson and her family, these have been replaced with fresh, candy shades – and guess what? It works. Their Georgia-based family home positively sparkles with vintage angels, frosted white trees and kitsch figurines, for a celebratory visual feast. Danielle is a trained graphic designer, so it’s no surprise that she has a colour-coded

Accordion trees

tutorial and photography by olivia kanaley of minted

We love these paper accordion trees so much that we couldn’t resist making a few to accompany our gingerbread house photoshoot (see page 81). If you’d like to try them yourself then head over to Minted’s blog, Julep, where you can download a free template and get folding away. Display them on shelves and mantelpieces à la Danielle Thompson (see home tour, page 52) or create a whole forest to festoon across your table.
