...but we’re pretty sure it’s almost summer. I’ve toyed with the idea of leaving my coat at home in the morning at least twice, so by my reckoning, it’s time to get into the sunshine spirit with some fresh makes. This month’s felt floral wreath gift is a great way to get in the mood – find out how to make it on page 94. I’m also loving We Are Scout’s woven drinks tray – it’s a garden party must. Team Mollie has just got back from a great weekend at The Handmade Fair in Ragley – we were feeling all the summer vibes surrounded by an army of creative crafters, and it was lovely to meet so many Mollie readers. Couldn’t make it this time? Turn to page 42 to book tickets to September’s show at Hampton Court – we’ll see you there!

Following your passion with...
STUDIO ARHOJ Ceramicist Anders Arhoj takes us behind the scenes at his Danish design studio, where Scandi simplicity meets Japanese eccentricity
Can you tell us what your typical working day is like at Studio Arhoj? I get up at 6am, have breakfast, then bike to the studio where I start airing out the kiln room. The team arrives at 9am and we usually fill and empty five kilns. Then we sand, quality-check and clean products before they’re taken into our stock room. Afternoons are spent on budgets, paying salaries, replying to emails or shooting photos for social media. My team leaves at 5pm but I usually stay until 7pm to wrap up loose ends. By 8pm I’m home – I’ll eat, watch some TV and then straight into bed.
Words: LOTTIE STOREY Photographs: ANDREAS HOUMANN
In just over a decade, Anders Arhoj has gone from lone designer in a tiny studio to boss of a bustling ceramics brand. Originally founded in Tokyo in 2006, Studio Arhoj is now based in Copenhagen Harbour, where Anders manages ten full-time employees and 11 kilns packed with characterful ceramics. Beginning his career as an illustrator, Anders quit his job in 2005 and relocated to Tokyo. A chance encounter with a ceramicist inspired him to change tack after he fell in love with wheel throwing and glaze construction, and 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 80
Studio Arhoj grew rapidly as Anders teamed up with different artists to hone its recognisable style. One of their most famous ranges are his Ghosts – an army of small handthrown figurines in various clays and glazes, designed in collaboration with Danish ceramicist Louise Gaarmann. They’re now stocked at HAY stores across the globe, and in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We met up with Studio Arhoj’s maverick master to find out more about him, his work, and his inspirations.
Is there a set way you develop ideas, or does your creative process vary? For me, there’s not a defined process from start to finished product. I usually carry my sketchbook with me at all times and draw in it if an idea pops up – we recently rebuilt our studio to contain an R&D (research and development) department where I hang up sketches on the walls. What gets me out of bed is the hunt for beauty. I’m obsessed with beautiful sights and sounds, be it landscapes or glittering diamond reflections. You have to constantly work harder to come up with new stuff until you find something that still excites

you. When I was young I would get a total high when coming up with something new. What is it that draws you to ceramics? I’d been fascinated with them for many years. The textures of earth, the frozen moment of a melting drop of glaze – it’s a tactile, sensory experience for the hand and the eye. When I ran into a ceramicist at a gallery opening in 2011, we decided to do some workshop weekends together and experiment in clay. That’s when the Ghost, Lava and Pen Holder were born. Subscribe at molliemakes.com
Do you find there are both positive and negative aspects to working with clay? The benefits of ceramics are overwhelming due to the degree of unpredictability you find in clay, but this is also the drawback. You might open a glaze fire kiln after two days and look into a war zone of exploded shards and cracked pots. But there’s also a chance that you can lift the lid and be amazed. Although I don’t feel I have a particular style, it’s probably evident I love character design, colours and humour. My aim with Studio Arhoj is to connect

LIVING home tour
Clare Nicolson’s London flat puts colour and natural light front and centre Words: LARA WATSON Photography: FIONA MURRAY
Scottish stylist and designer Clare Nicolson knows how to get the most from a space. The one-bedroom flat she shares with fiancé John in Stoke Newington, London, may be small, but it’s a lesson in colour combination and allowing your personality to shine through. The couple has lived in this rented property just off Butterfield Green for two years, and in that time they’ve used their combined skills to create and source pieces to finish each room

LIVING home tour
Clare’s woven cushions sit pretty on her living room chair and sofa, with extra cosiness coming from the West Elm Souk wool rug.
Clare found her fantastic wall hanging at a market during the Canalway Cavalcade gathering in Little Venice a few years ago.
In the bedroom, an Ikea light and mirror, and West Elm rug, complement the high ceilings and period features.
