out and about

Look at all these summery projects! Don’t get me wrong, I love a colourful pair of woolly tights and a handmade snood as much as the next yarn-obsessive, but it really has been chilly for far too long. Let the sunny crafts commence with our fruit salad of plushies, festival bag, floaty kimono and bike accessories, then venture out on a daytrip. The Mollie Makes team have enjoyed a couple lately – we loved Kirstie Allsopp’s Handmade Christmas Fair launch in Manchester (hence the quick Instagram above. Always a pleasure to catch up with craft telly’s busiest lady. Read more on page 13) and The Craftivists’ workshop collaboration with The Letterpress Collective in Bristol. Share your proud making moments with us too, using #molliemakers. Until next month…

Julie Paterson Founder of ethical textile label Cloth, Julie’s a former West Country gal soaking up inspiration in the Australian mountains Words: Judy Darley Photographs: Armelle habib

Born in Somerset, living in Australia, and with more than 20 years’ experience running an art-based textiles company, Julie Paterson is definitely an original. Since moving to Australia more than 25 years ago she’s taken the dramatic natural landscapes to heart, with her pared back designs reflecting aspects of its scale and colours. She founded her label, Cloth (www. clothfabric.com), in 1995 with the aim of making environmentally responsible, hand printed furnishing fabrics. Every design tells a story, and is screenprinted 28 MOLLIEMAKES.com 53

or hand stamped onto natural fabrics. Her new book, Cloth Bound, offers a unique insight into her creative process and personal outlook, taking us through the instinctive, exploratory way she creates designs. The book is prefaced with her ‘Imperfect Manifesto’, which she wrote one Sunday afternoon and now forms the basis of her approach to work and life. The finished product is a stunning acheivement that will enchant both nature lovers and crafters. We sat down to find out about Julie’s creative journey.

Whereabouts do you live? I split my time pretty evenly between Sydney and the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, but I’m restructuring my business with the intention of being in the mountains much more. This time last year I had seven staff, a shop and an office, and it was a massive juggling act. Now I still own the business but I’ve handed over sales and distribution to a wholesalers called Ascraft. It takes a lot of trust but it’s freeing me up enormously. Who do you surround yourself with? I love solitude, so can happily be on my own for hours. My main companions are my partner Amanda, who’s a writer, and Harry, a hairy rescue dog. In the mountains there are lots of gentle souls around, all striving for their own balanced life. I like to surround myself with compassionate people. What’s a typical day like for you? I never have one – it’s what I love about my life. On an ideal day in the mountains I get
