Describe your style in a few words? Bold and bright with a nostalgic twist.

Reaching your goals with…

NIKKI MCWILLIAMS Our Handmade Awards established business winner reveals the secrets behind her label and shares her top social media tips Words: HANNAH BULLIVANT Photographs: KRISTY NOBLE

Nikki McWilliams first began making gifts to sell while at school, then moved on to co-organising a series of craft markets while studying for her degree in fine art and drawing. So it makes total sense that she’d decide to set up her own handmade homewares label in 2009. A joyful tribute to her love of pop art and British culture plus her fascination with the ritual of the tea break, her label bears the fruit of her fine art training and understanding of colour. She’s best known for her iconic British biscuit designs, which appear on everything 28 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 61

from cushions and wall hangings to sticky tape in her busy online shop. Nikki’s label grew quickly, with orders flooding in from all over the world. Textile printing is now outsourced to British factories in order to keep up with demand (ethical production is a priority), while sewing and design are kept in house. She won the established business award at the Mollie Makes Handmade Awards 2015, which she sweetly says was a real career highlight. We visited Nikki in her colourful Scottish home to find out more.

What’s a typical working day for you? Every day is different, and that’s just how I like it! I always start the morning with a cuppa, and visit the post office at least once. I’m involved with all areas of my business: designing new products, taking photographs and doing admin too. The balance between tasks usually shifts depending on what time of year it is. For example, at Christmas time it’s all hands on deck making sure everyone’s orders go out on time. Where do you currently work? My partner Michael (a fine artist) and I had separate studios when we lived in Glasgow but when we moved [to a sleepy hamlet just outside] we were able to afford more space, so now we both have a studio at home. Our house is full of light and decorated just how we like it, so it’s a lovely place to both live and work. What projects are you currently working on? I’m currently working on some exciting collaborations. The first is with Kim from Finest Imaginary (www.finestimaginary. com). We met on Twitter a few years ago and she went on to design my website. I COULD DO THAT…

Glitter candles

Just because it’s dark outside, it doesn’t mean your home has to go down the same route. We’re upping our sparkle and neon game with this oh-so-easy idea from Papermash. Fill mini milk bottles (available from the website) halfway with gold glitter then add neon candles. Matching twine around the top makes for a finishing touch, and there you go – sparkle and colour for winter nights. Just add Netflix, hot chocolate and a crochet blanket. www.papermash.co.uk
