Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?)

I intend to write and illustrate a children’s picture/ storybook. Taking inspiration from other illustrators such as Laura Carlin and Jon Klassen I intend to produce something with narrative and sophistication that does not read as condescending. I wanted to do this because children’s illustration is something I’m interested in but am not yet 100% sure it is right for me in my practice. I feel like now is a good point to try something in depth, and to really explore it. I think making illustration for children is quite the challenge, working to make something both suitable and engaging. When making anything there’s this feeling that it has to be beneficial to a more ‘thoughtful’ ‘adult’ audience, I think it’s important to not become too selfabsorbed in pursuit of that but it’s also something I care about myself.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES: (I’m finding it hard to explain through words my intentions. At present there is less of a specific theme as a tone of voice I wanted to capture through narrative, character, story and atmosphere) I’m quite interested in the idea of ‘fears’, mostly because it brings me back to when I was a child (and very afraid of everything) and has some potential for different areas. Other potential general themes: the everyday, imagination, growth, connections SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: Fears: The dark, the unknown, monsters Using more specific things as placeholder/ metaphor for fear: the sea, insects. Maybe something very odd and specific to illustrate a certain idea. Connections and growth: viewing the world in a holistic way, how we are part of a larger scheme of things. Can be a little bit factual, but it’s more of a narrative, a story.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs.

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Children’s books and illustration AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: Primary audience: children I would have to research more but, looking at other books that I am interested in, I would estimate the age range at around 5-8 years of age. It would be helpful if the child had some reading comprehension, but there’s no reason this couldn’t be a shared experience between parent and child. At this age children seem to be still interested in largely visual storybooks. Secondary audience: parents/ adults I’d like to make something that can hold its own enough to be enjoyed by adults, but it’s not my main concern. Anything a child can enjoy has the potential to be enjoyed by adults, but something too ‘adult’ may be unsuitable for children. PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS: The book has the potential to be produced by a publisher and be sold online or in bookshops. There is also the potential for the book to be something that is self-published, but I think that’s something to consider further along in the project. CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

I miss painting and would like to take this opportunity to improve my use of gouache. I’m also interested in collage and continuing what I learned about lino and print making in OUIL504. Making a book will also require me to put my skills to the test in regards to narrative, be it visually or literally, and will probably also require me to learn new skills in bookbinding! KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites
