Rationale I have been considering the idea of “situated illustration” (as described by the Royal College of Art)- work that “responds to a certain location… connections that surround work and site… contextual awareness… locality, spatially and psychologically”. Work that is “engaging” and has “persuasive interactions with the public”. “Work that revisits archives and seeks to expand the relevance to wider groups of people- exploring significance beyond academic notions”. https://www.rca.ac.uk/schools/school-of-communication/visual_communication/illustrationpathway/ Essentially, working in response to locations and archives, and creating a space that addresses these subjects to a (wide) public audience. At this point I am not sure where this will go, but as a large part of this type of project is research, this isn’t so necessary at this point. I have been considering the following themes and subjects, just stemming mostly from drawing a lot of trees in my spare time. Themes / Subjects       

Naturalism ‘Post-Nature’ / ‘Making Nature’ Attention Restoration Theory The Slow Movement Outdoor Education The Kibbo Kift (post-scout movement, interest in pacifism, art and costume) -> Dada-ism

ACTION PLAN – use this section to identify specific tasks that you need to complete

in order to resolve the brief. Week What do you need to do? In the early stages of the project I intend to mostly focus my work on 1 the other smaller briefs, relieving larger blocks of time in the future to concentrate on this project.

This weekend, I will begin research though, recording from outdoor environments. Research through reading and watching. Establish more themes. Contact other artists. Record from life at opportunity

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: ‘Making Nature’ at the Wellcome Collection

Deadline

20/01/17

Details

A visit to the Wellcome Collection’s ‘Making Nature’ exhibition, an archive of art and artefacts that document the idea of nature after modern man. RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Reading

Deadline

Bulk done by 28/02/17

Deadline

First series: 09/02/17 – 12/02/17

Details

Reading artistic and thematic literature relevant to the project. Continuous, but with the bulk done by the set deadline. RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Outdoors research and drawing 1

Details

Beginning to record from life the environments that inspired these movements and ideologies, examining their impacts on others and myself. This will be continuous, with small periods of time dedicated more intensely to this. The focus will change and narrow (in regards to locations and subject matter) as the research becomes more focused. RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Practioner contacts

Deadline

28/02/17

Details

There are a few practioners I would like to get in contact with. Rob Lowe, for example, has done work on the Kibbo Kift himself, and I would like to ask him his feelings on them, and how they influenced his work. I’d also like to contact others, such as Leah Fusco, with a few small questions on the functionality of their practices that extend into “situated illustration” and “less-applied” work. RESEARCH ACTIVITY: gallery visits

Deadline

30/04/17

Details Gallery visits, to exhibitions and artists who are influenced by the land. I.e., Hockney, Hepworth, Moore. Can also reflect on visit to Miró, and his interest in his surrounding enviroments.
