Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale Project Rationale. (what do you intend to do and why?)

I intend to write and illustrate a children’s picture/ storybook. Taking inspiration from other illustrators such as Laura Carlin and Jon Klassen I intend to produce something with narrative and sophistication that does not read as condescending. I wanted to do this because children’s illustration is something I’m interested in but am not yet 100% sure it is right for me in my practice. I feel like now is a good point to try something in depth, and to really explore it. I think making illustration for children is quite the challenge, working to make something both suitable and engaging. When making anything there’s this feeling that it has to be beneficial to a more ‘thoughtful’ ‘adult’ audience, I think it’s important to not become too selfabsorbed in pursuit of that but it’s also something I care about myself. I intend to propose a range of products that would accompany the main title. These would be informed by the book and the range would work together to create something whole, rather than the products being just add-ons to the book. (Specific run through of the intended project at this pointJ A 32 page book, or design for a book, that discusses the topic of fear and bravery to children aged 4-7 years old. A range of proposed products that accompany this main title in a thoughtful manner.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include Theoretical and non- creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary practice GENERAL THEMES:

Fears, experiences Personal growth Confidence / bravery SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:

Irrational fears, animals, environments

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production / distribution of work in response to selected briefs. SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA:

Children’s illustration Story books

AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS:

Main target audience: Children, approximately aged 4-7 years old Children with confidence issues Secondary target audience: Parents / adults buying for their child Teachers and schools Adults with an interest in storybooks / illustration / illustrated publications PRODUCTION / DISTRIBUTION METHODS:

The book would have the potential to be produced by a publisher and be sold online or in bookshops. I don’t have interest in self-publishing this. The range of products could also be sold in bookshops and online.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioner’s and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production / Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS:

• Flying Eye Books
 • Puffin Books
 • Laura Carlin
 • Sara Fanelli

• Atak
 • Jon Klassen
 • Miroco Machiko • Misaki Kawai • Bruno Munari • Bill Bragg • Anorak Magazine • Okido Magazine • Paul Rand CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project. What do you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

I miss painting and would like to take this opportunity to improve my use of gouache. At the minute my practice is informed by painters who may not be considered illustrators first hand, such as Miroco Machiko and Misaki Kawai. Making a book will also require me to put my skills to the test in regards to narrative, be it visually or literally, and will probably also require me to learn new skills in bookbinding! KEY TEXTS. List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites
