Ecologically-Sensitive Housing

M.Arch Thesis | Harvard Graduate School of Design

The Everglades ecosystem is the largest wilderness east of the Mississippi River and the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It provides drinking water to one third of Floridians and supports rich plant and wildlife communities, including many rare and endangered species. Its complex mosaic of vegetation is becoming increasingly threatened by unsustainable development practices and total urbanization. This project presents a new housing typology, which reconnects Florida’s residents to the natural landscape while protecting against hurricanes, rising water levels, and ecological damage. The housing is dense, elevated, and designed to provide a high level of privacy as well as an immediacy with nature, a minimal footprint, and a minimal impact on ecologically sensitive lands. The Everglades protect against storm surge flooding.

Fresh water must once again be able to flow freely from Lake Okeechobee south to Florida Bay. This will dramatically slow down salt water intrusion and help recharge the Floridian aquifer.

The Everglades are an important source of drinking water.

A large portion of the Everglades has already been drained to make room for sugar cane and urban development that occupies land where shallow waters once flowed unfettered from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay.

Housing must become more dense and elevated to protect from hurricanes and preserve the Everglades ecosystem.

For decades we have allowed water laden with fertilizer and other pollutants to flow into and damage the Everglades.
