D*School
D School is essentially an icebreaker that acted as our first official work as a class in ART 130.

A joking exaggeration of how to deal with one’s problems
Engaging with a real person did somewhat change how my prototype looked, as I probably wouldn’t immediately go with taking a rocket ship to space as a method of avoiding one’s problems or escaping financial restraints. I was not big on showing unfinished work to another person, as I end up comparing myself to others, making me feel insecure. Though it did make me take my work less seriously due to how broken and shabby it turned out. The quick pace was very different from what I am used to. Having to sketch something out and then immediately make a prototype for it is very out of my comfort zone. As I usually have to work a few days before making a physical version. Based on what I learned from this, I would probably place less focus on specific parts and work on all the different parts equally to avoid the overall imbalanced appearance.

In my eyes, gestalt is basically the various forms of visual perception and psychology found within art. Regarding the making of cardboard art, I definitely struggled in my attempts to make my ideas into a legitimate sculpture. If I were given more time to plan and design my object, I feel that I could better exemplify what I originally wanted to make. I want it to be recognizable and structurally sound. I think it remained relatively the same, I have always known that abstract art’s main goal is non-literal forms of presentation. Although it did make me think more of how I would present my art to others without directly saying what it is. Yes, because with drawing there can be preparation and a strengthened understanding of what you’re going to create. Since we only had ten minutes to make our desired object, not as much thought could be included in design or form. I could use this lesson to find other ways to imply words and symbols to a greater degree. I may also work on becoming faster when making different forms of art in shorter periods of time.

Hand Lettering Visualizing a specific word through different fonts and styles
8
Hand-lettering taught me much about letterforms. This includes the variety that comes in fonts and the struggle to choose from one to another, also with the amount of necessary focus needed to make a legible and recognizable type while still keeping it visually stimulating. The techniques that I would most like to spend more time refining would be inking and charcoal, as expending my abilities would make for a greater variety in my artwork, and the increased experience would encourage me to be less cautious when working with these mediums. Form vs. content is still a new concept to me, but regarding which one I think my art was strongest in would be form or ideas, as the implications and symbolism within the word I used was visualized better.

Object Iterations Variations of an object in different art styles
I love elephants, and am pretty happy with how this turned out
11
I learned a great deal more about elephant anatomy and development thanks to this project. I’m glad I chose elephants because I could expand my knowledge things like their habits and life expectancies. Also, they’re significantly wrinklier than you think. The media that was the most challenging for me was the non-typographic collages, as I struggled with finding images that could be properly combined and recognized as elements. I really liked doing the typographic collages though, as they were different from what I am used to while also expanding my abilities towards another medium. I have used Photoshop prior to this class but it was well over a year ago, so reaccustoming myself to the motions of the program was rather difficult. I will continue placing images into different layers, as it makes cleaning up the rest of the picture significantly easier. If I had to continue with this object for a year, I might use sculpture or some sort of 3d work to represent elephants in new ways as 3d art is not something I often do and I feel that I should learn more from it.

DataBiz
Visually documenting certain statics of our choice.
For my Dataviz poster, I created visual hierarchy by balancing the size of the objects and letters, keeping the visuals symmetrical, and making sure to maintain a simple color palette. I believe I succeeded in creating the visual hierarchy similar to that of the classic Star Wars crawl, without sacrificing legibility. One of the skills I learned from this project was an increased use of InDesign and Photoshop to adjust images properly, and in aligning text and objects so that they are visually pleasing and coherent. It was fun that I finally got to use color in my piece, I knew it was important to reign it to not overdo it with the palette, so I’m glad I chose Star Wars as my theme. It was fun making sure to balance everything and finding the right shade of blue and yellow to work with the poster.

This is an analysis of the number of named character deaths featured in Star Wars The Clone Wars. In researching this topic, we can estimate which group is statistically most likely to die...
Total named Deaths: 68 Clone Trooper Deaths: 41 Jedi Deaths: 14 Senators/ Leaders: 13
Clone: 60.29%
Jedi: 20.59%
Leaders: 19.12%
Overall there is an impressively wide gap between the number of deaths of named Clone Troopers when compared to that of Jedi or Senators. Although there are outliers on the list of deaths that are not counted, such as other militaries or droids, that may influence the sample size, one can still clearly see the discreptency. These statistics indicate not only the inherent dangers involved with being a clone during the Clone War, but also their rather minimal chance of survival. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5RdAQrmp58, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A28blztopo

I was mostly drawn to JW and Melissa Buchanan for their interesting art style. I liked the colorful images they created and wanted to understand what lead to their career as being professional artists in the modern world. I did terribly presenting my PowerPoint, and I feel disappointed in myself for it. I overestimated the length of 20 seconds and was quickly overwhelmed, I should has shortened my sentences and stayed on point when presenting. I should have practiced more, and worked on being more objective in giving information. A designer that my classmates presented that I might want to research further is Aaron Douglas, as the historical influence that he has on the Harlem Renaissance and his progression as an artist is very interesting to me.

Conclusion Art is Good. I hope I may further my abilities and improve in my chosen field so that I can make a legitimate career out of it. Design is an important aspect of art because it can cover multiple basis’s of a given idea while still emphasizing the intended meaning of the work. No matter what type of job one may go into, design will make an impact on it, as it effects almost every aspects of our lives as a visual medium. I will make sure to do better in verbally presenting information in front of others, and coloring things in digitally.
