welve percent of this year's 73 Molokai High School graduates were valedictorians and 33 percent have already earned college credits. "This is unprecedented," said Principal Stan Hao. "This is the most [valedictorians] we've ever had. In farming terms, we have a bumper crop of really smart kids." In the high school's graduation ceremony for the class of 2016 last Friday, student accomplishments were honored, songs were sung, tears were cried and Farmer pride was on display. Members of the class of 2016 helped the school claim four MIL team championships in football, girls basketball, baseball and boys volleyball, as well as individual champions in wrestling, track and field and judo, according to Hao. "One hundred percent of our valedictorians and salutatorian were part of our athletic program," said Hao. "This shows that you can balance academic and athletic pursuits simultaneously. This is an

extremely celebrated class with academics as well as athletics... because of this, there is much for the class of 2016 to be proud of." In addition to athletic successes, the class has proved that Molokai students are well-deserving of higher education at the Ivy League level. Among this year's graduates, students will be attending Brown, Columbia and Stanford universities, among dozens of other colleges. Valedictorian Kaimana Kahale reminded fellow students in his speech to be thankful for there they came from and the help they received along the way. "On Molokai were fortunate to learn early on to appreciate the simple things," he said. "And that lesson of gratitude will take us a long way. It ultimately will be the key to our happiness and success. Whether away in college, trade school, working on Molokai or moving to a new place - let us be reminded of gratitude for others." Salutatorian Geisha Mae Nunez shared that she was born in the Philippines and moved to Molokai

when she was 5, not knowing a word of English. "I was greeted with friendliness..." she recalled. "I'm leaving this place with more friends than I could ask for... Molokai taught us to be selfless, caring and hardworking." For state wrestling champion and Valedictorian Cendall Manley, lots of lessons can be learned on the mat. "Think of life in terms of a wrestling match," she said. "It has been said that wrestling is 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical. In other words, in order to win wrestling, you have to believe in your mind that you can... Guys, we're about to step out on the mat of our life...We have been given the tools, we have worked hard, and now we ned to go out there and give it our all." Other Valedictorians, who each shared one minutes of words with fellow classmates and audience, were Jordan Boswell, Sabrina Curtis, Keaaokahonua Davis, Kysha Kawano, Oceana Madani and Misty Marker.

ore than 100 Molokai graduates of all ages were honored for completing an important milestone in their lives two weeks ago as they earned associate, bachelor and masters degrees on Molokai. Every four years, University of Hawaii Maui College Molokai campus holds a commencement ceremony and this year's 41 graduation participates represented just a portion of the 116 students that received degrees between 2012 and 2016. The graduates -- ranging in age from 17 to 59 -- are 75 percent Native Hawaiian. They represent all walks of life, including three couples, two siblings and three military veterans. They are parents to 38 kids. Some of them completed their degrees in two years while others worked hard for more than 20 years to complete their goals. This year's commencement also

included the college's youngest ever graduate, 17-year-old Shyla Kamakaleihiwa Purdy-Avelino, who earned her associate degree in Hawaiian studies. Celebrating family accomplishments and different learning styles is a trademark of Molokai graduations.

“Every time we have a graduation, I get choked up,” said former former UHMCM Site Coordinator Donna Haytko-Paoa in a 2015 Dispatch interview. “We highlight the couples that graduate together, the

Why I fly with Makani Kai For fourteen-year-old Uso, flying with Makani Kai means being welcome at our facility, “The people are nice and the flights are smooth and comfortable” he says. Uso also mentions Makani Kai’s low-cost airfare. When it’s pointed out that it is actually his parents who pay for the tickets, Uso says that, well, they like to save money, too. A big sports fan, Uso is rooting for the Toronto Raptors in the NBA finals, who are, at this writing, down 2-0 to the Cavaliers. They’re gonna need some of that youthful Uso Mojo.

EDUCATION & THE ARTS Community Contributed

Molokai Student Wins Prestigious Scholarships By Cheryl Corbiell Molokai High School senior Sabrina Curtis was astounded to learn she will be attending Columbia University in New York for fall 2016, and was awarded three prestigious, national scholarships to relieve the financial burden. Curtis' major will be in mechanical engineering with a minor in sustainability at the private, Ivy League university in Upper Manhattan, New York. Post secondary education is not new to Curtis because for the past year Sabrina has successfully completed first year English and Math at University of Hawaii, Maui College, Molokai campus. With financial assistance from the Ho`oku`i program, Curtis began her post secondary education. Project Ho`oku`i, a statewide partnership between the Hawaii Department of Education and the University of Hawaii, provides financial opportunities for academically qualified students to attend post secondary education while still in high school. "I had a taste of the demands of college courses," said Curtis. "With higherlevel writing and math skills, I had more confidence in applying for scholarships. As well, I had one more asset on my resume, with the completion of two university courses." Post secondary education is an investment in the future, but is costly. Curtis was awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, funded by a grant from the

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. "The competition is daunting because the applicant pool is over 50,000 students and only 1000 are selected,” said Curtis. This program provides students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education. Curtis is also the recipient the Horatio Alger National Scholarship for exceptional high school students, and she was one of 106 recipients chosen this year. Lastly, Curtis received the Buick Achievement Scholarship, funded by the GM Foundation, which is awarded to only 50 students, who are successful inside and outside the classroom and pays up to $25,000 per year for four years. "Students should not be afraid to apply to scholarships because if the student is a recipient, it is well worth the time and effort it takes to apply," said Curtis. Curtis' advice to other students is simple: start the educational journey. "Molokai students have opportunities to get college credits while being in high school and student programs, such as Ho`oku`i, help financially, but also ensures you get help if you need it. Although applying for scholarships and going to high school and college at the same time is demanding, it is worth the effort to start the post secondary journey before finishing high school,” she said.

Ukulele Ohana Molokai to Celebrate Mele O`o Full Heart Productions News Release This coming Memorial Day weekend, May 27-31, the sounds of the happiest instrument on earth will once again fill the lodge at Pu`u O Hoku Ranch as the Ukulele Ohana Molokai workshop and its teacher Lono, return for the fifth year. The theme this year will be Mele O`o or powerful music. Participants will learn the deep roots of Old Style Hawaiian music with Lono on their ukulele, and to experience the vibrant community of Molokai. When asked what inspires him to write and teach Lono says, “The line between the past and the present, through our ancestors, prepares us for the future. I feel connected and in the presence of our ancestors when I create the mele…. Music is life and life is a never ending story.” At the age of 3, Lono began his musical training in traditional Hawaiian folk music with his grandmother Miriam “Freckles” Kupahu. Her ike and aloha have become the foundations for his life’s work. He continues to return to Old Style music for inspiration and to remember her, her parents and grandparents. She is honored on Lono’s Old Style II CD. At 5, Lono began learning to be a paniolo with his family on the far eastern side of Molokai. During his father’s management of the Ranch he spent his days riding, roping and

learned ways of raising cattle in the tropics. He also attended Kilohana School in Kaunakakai. May 2016, he will once again return home to Pu`u O Hoku Ranch, where he grew up, and true to his intention, he does so as one of Hawaii's most beloved Old Style folk musicians spreading happiness through nurturing and beautiful songs, na Mele, and hula. Melany Berry of Full Heart Productions co-created Ukulele Ohana Molokai with Lono and the Molokai community after having a ukulele hand built for her years ago by an island artisan. What has inspired her to produce this event year after year has been the stories of the beautiful landscapes and people of Molokai, experienced through Lono’s music, combined with the generous hospitality of Pu`u O Hoku Ranch. This year will create a memorable immersion into traditional and contemporary Old Style Hawaiian folk music while enabling everyone to deepen the way they play and compose with their ukulele. Believing that we all have original stories, Ukulele Ohana Molokai will help participants fall in love with their ukulele all over again (or for the first time, as novices are encouraged to come) and to work intimately with the teachers to create their very own Mele O`o, powerful songs and melodies.

wo weeks ago, athletes from all sports in the fall, winter and spring categories were honored on stage at the Molokai High School Athletic Department's annual banquet. Individual champions were also honored as were the Boys Volleyball runner up DII State Championship team, the MIL DII Champion Boys Football team and State Wrestling Champion Cendall Manley. Manley will have her picture placed in the MHS Hall of Fame in The Barn. Athletic Director Lee DeRouin and his staff did an awesome job on the banquet and the awards, and everyone enjoyed a roast pork dinner prepared by Mike's Catering. DeRouin, commented on the past

Every commencement is the one I’m most proud of.” The Molokai branch of UH began offering classes in 1970, and the college has come a long way since then. In the early days, instruction was given at Kaunakakai Elementary School. “You would see rather large individuals sitting in Kindergarten chairs,” recalled college lecturer Dan Bennett in 2015. Ten years later, conditions were less cramped but still less than ideal. “In 1994, as a student at the Molokai Education Center, the rain was dripping through the roof of the former Maui Electric Building onto my paper as I sat writing an exam for a [Masters in Education] program,” said Molokai student-turned-professor, Caryl Hitchcock, also in a 2015 interview. Today, graduates enjoy the modern amenities of a college campus and the promise of more facilities and opportunities to come. And, as in the past, diversity and individualized learning is celebrated. At this year's commencement, the

coaches, our parents and our loyal fans for a remarkable year," he said. He also gave special thanks also to Molokai Drugs, Mokulele Airlines, Peter Pale and The County of Maui, Mike’s Catering and The Molokai Dispatch's Molokai Sports Report. Hawaii State House Representative Lynn Mokuau and Maui County Council Member Stacy Crivello were in attendance and helped give out recognition to the student athletes. So many of the Molokai student athletes participate in many different sports during the course of the year and the 20152016 sports season at Molokai High School is one to be remembered. This year the graduating class has nine valedictorians and all of them were student athletes at Molokai High.

college awarded 87 associate degrees, 17 bachelor degrees and 12 masters degrees. Avelino-Purdy said she began taking college classes as an "experiment" when her mom became too busy to continue homeschool education. "This is a really important moment for me... and especially my mom, since she helped for this whole journey," she said. "It was kind of an experiment, we didn't know what we were doing but we did it and I'm humbly proud." For valedictorian and one of the student speakers at the commencement, Ekolu Ah Yee, said when he enrolled in college in 2013, he "didn't know what I wanted to do, nor did I have the slightest clue of what I wanted out of my education." "Despite all of that, I jumped in head first and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made in my life so far.... College has opened so many new doors for me," he said. Five years ago, you wouldn’t catch me dead up here. No ways.” Ah Yee said having the opportunity to tutor fellow students at the college has made him want to become a teacher. “Consider this. Ask not what Molokai can do for you but what you can do for Molokai,” he said.

Last week, Representative Lynn DeCoite (D- East Maui, Molokai, Lanai) filed her papers to seek election to the District 13 seat in the Hawaii State House of Representatives, the seat she was appointed to by Governor Ige on Feb. 19, 2015 to fill the remainder of the two year term of the late Mele Carroll. “Being appointed to represent District 13 was a tremendous honor. It has been a whirl-wind adventure; I don’t think I’ve ever been so inspired, amazed, overwhelmed, tired, and energized all at the same time- and I wouldn’t change one second of it! It is with that notion that I am now running in the 2016 election to continue to represent District 13, so I can further serve the residents of East Maui, Molokai, Lanai along with the entire state of Hawaii,” said DeCoite to a group of supporters before filing her papers at Maui County Clerk’s office. Rep. DeCoite also lined out her priorities for continuing in office: • Outreach and Inclusion of all islands and residents when it comes to services, resources, programs and jobs. District 13 is the only “canoe dis-

3

trict” in the State House of Representatives. The areas (and Islands) in the district are considered “rural” and do not always get the attention that urban areas of the state receive. • Agriculture - Food Safety, Sustainability and promoting local products • Education - Facility improvement and support services for students and teachers. • Health - Health Care and Access to health services for all residents • Housing - Affordable/ Quality Housing and addressing the “Hidden Homeless” • DHHL - Adequate funding for operations and administration. Rep DeCoite has stated that she is committed to keeping her ears open, an open mind and is willing to listen and work with everyone to make the State of Hawaii a better place for all of its people. Veterans Corner Memorial Day

By Jesse Church Aloha all my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news, and upcoming events. As the Memorial Day holiday nears this Monday, veterans, especially combat veterans, tend to become maybe a little bit abrupt, or act in a manner that they normally would not. The reason for this change is the closer that Memorial Day gets, the more veterans think about the men and women that we trained with, worked with, fought with, became friends with, and depended on, but who did not come home with us. You ask yourself why but you cannot give yourself a satisfactory answer. Then you start to lose sleep, and some get bad dreams, and every year you fight your way throughout the month of May. These brave, and courageous young men and women selflessly and willingly gave their most precious possession, their lives, so that you, me, and all Americans could live in freedom, and enjoy the American way of life. On this Memorial Day, I know that all combat veterans like myself saw the carnage, the horrors, and the senseless slaughter of human life in war. I know that it is we who share the sight of watching a friend and fellow American willingly and without remorse give their life. To

me they are true heroes, and we must never let America forget what they did for us. That is what Memorial Day is, it is a day of remembrance for all Americans, not just veterans, to remember all American war dead starting in 1776 and the American revolutionary war to the present day and the incredible gift they gave to us. Without remembrance, their sacrifice becomes meaningless and we cannot and will not allow that to happen. I want to ask everybody living on Molokai a question that I asked last Memorial day, which is can everybody tell me the name of just soldier, sailor, airman, or marine who sacrificed his or her life in one of America’s wars? On this Memorial Day, and every day I hope that you truly enjoy the many liberties of our freedom that was secured for us by the sacrifices of America’s courageous, and heroic men and women, who willingly gave their last full measure of devotion, never forget them ever! I hope that all of Molokai continues to support our armed forces that are stationed in harm’s way and pray for their safe and speedy return home. If you have any questions, suggestions or news please call old Jesse at 553-3323, and remember that old Jesse loves all my neighbors on Molokai from the heart. Aloha and mahalo.

COMMUNITY NEWS & LETTERS

Doctor Says Goodbye I humbly thank the Molokai community for the years I have had living and working on this lovely island. Sadly, I will be leaving Molokai shortly to accept my new position at the Waimanalo Community Health Center on Oahu. I hope that my sincere aloha was felt by all with whom I came in contact. Thank you for trusting me and allowing me into your lives. In working with so many of you, my hope is that my efforts, care, and experience brought new ways of thinking and re-

lating to one another that will result in healthier and happier minds, hearts, and families. I also hope the people of Molokai will continue to aim the strength and heart of this community to fighting substance abuse, domestic violence, and sexual and physical abuse of children, which are at the heart of so many mental health issues. With gratitude, Dr. Stephanie Napoli

Charity Walk Raises $40K By Barbara Haliniak, Molokai Charity Walk Chair Mahalo everyone who attended and supported our annual Molokai Hotel and Lodging Association (MHLA) Charity Walk fundraiser on Saturday, May 7. It was a fun time and many folks remarked how great it was to see everyone having such a grand time. A total of $40,356 was raised on Molokai, and the organization raising the most funds was Friends of Molokai High and Middle Schools, at a whopping $10,000. To all the nonprofit organizations whose solicitation of funds and walkers trekking from Hotel Molokai to Friendly Isle Auto Parts and Supplies and back to Hotel Molokai, mahalo for the extra effort to register your nonprofit and organize your walkers. Special thanks to Bridgett Blair and Ken Takenouchi of Bank of Hawaii for coordinating and collecting the funds turned in by the nonprofits on Thursday and Friday before the walk. These early collections have greatly sped up announcing Molokai’s grand total collections to walkers gathered under Hotel Molokai’s white tent. Many thanks to the three aid stations who generously donated refreshments along the route; Maui Electric Company’s Damien Pires, Alamo Car Rental/ Enterprise’s Bill Dudoit, Young Brothers’ Al Ranis and all the volunteers at the aid stations, including Leilani Wallace and Barbara Emia. Many thanks to volunteer William Smith who served as Safety Marshall to ensure walkers were safe in the cross walk and offered lomilomi after the walk.

Mahalo to Michael Drew, General Manager of Hotel Molokai who donated all of the proceeds from bento sales to the Charity Walk. The walkers were also treated to continental breakfast compliments of Hale Kealoha and Kama Hoe. Entertainment was provided by the Last Minute Band members, Sterling Kalua, Kimo Paleka, Waipa Purdy, Bully Aki and Issac Kamaile. What an awesome band, music played from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a short intermission for announcements and door prize drawings of more than 100 items. Awesome as well was MC Leialoha Kaleikini. Many thanks to generous door prize donors: American Savings Bank, Anahaki Farms, Bank of Hawaii, Beach Break, Big Daddy’s, Coca Cola, Denise’s Gifts, Friendly Market Center, First Finance, Friendly Isle Auto Parts & Supplies, Hawaii Finest, Hometown Grocery, Dan Bennett, Julie Schonely Massage, Kupu A’e, Kanemitsu Bakery, Kalele Bookstore, Kualapuu Cookhouse, Kualapuu Market, L&R Farm, Local Store, MR Variety Shop, Malama Surf Shop, Maka’s Korner, Maunaloa Store, Misaki Store, Mini Mart, Molokai Drugs, Molokai Ideal Furniture, Molokai Pizza, Na Puuwai, OHA, Paddlers Inn, Pascua Store, RJ Snacks, Something for Everybody, Sundown Deli, Rawlins Chevron and Take’s Variety. On behalf of MHLA’s Lisa Paulson, Christine Christensen and the Molokai team, a big mahalo. Without you and your support, we could not do what we do!
