Poor Weather a Factor in Crash By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor
I
n its initial report of a helicopter crash on Molokai three weeks ago, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) cited poor weather as a factor in the accident. Attorney and pilot Gary Galiher was flying his private aircraft from Honolulu to his home in east Molokai, along with passenger Keiko Kuroki, on the evening of Nov. 15. The helicopter crashed not far from Galiher's private helipad, killing both him and Kuroki. Low visibility and heavy rain showers were reported in the area that night. The NTSB preliminary report, released last Wednesday, states that the Hughes 369D helicopter "was destroyed after impacting mountainous tree-covered terrain about one mile north of Pukoo." It estimates the time of the crash was 6:41 p.m. The federal investigative agency arrived on Molokai three days after the accident, visited the site and spoke with witnesses. The report notes that Galiher's helipad, located above his home at 750 feet, has four red solar powered perimeter lights, and three red exterior hangar lights. "...The property caretaker reported that the accident pilot routinely used the southerly facing red exterior hangar lights to find the heliport during dark night conditions," the report states. However that night, two neighboring residents interviewed by the NTSB said they saw the helicopter flying low and slow over their property around 6:40 p.m. with the landing light illuminating the ground. "The witnesses each commented that it looked like the pilot was lost and searching the ground for something before the helicopter turned to the east, and it departed for the shoreline," the report states. Another witness said she saw the helicopter make a "controlled descent under dark, windy and very rainy conditions" across the ridgeline near her house before it disappeared behind the ridge. She called the weather conditions that night "almost the worst she had ever seen there." Though no flight plan was filed by Galiher for his channel crossing, the NTSB reported that radar data showed the helicopter leaving Honolulu Airport at 5:56 p.m. and its last known position on the radar was recorded about eight miles southwest of the Ho`olehua Airport headed east. The last radio contact with the chopper was at 6:24 p.m. with Galiher received clearance from the Molokai Air Traffic Control tower to fly through the area. "Witnesses located in near Pukoo reported that weather conditions that were much worse than that being reported at the Molokai Airport, which included gusty wind conditions, heavy rain, and reduced visibility," the report concludes. Final accident reports are usually not released for months after an accident.

undreds of Molokai families lined the street of downtown Kaunakakai for an annual event that lights up the Christmas season. This year's Winter Wonderland Light Parade featured more than half a dozen fantastical floats and many marching units from local organizations.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints created an "Avatar"-themed float complete with a huge, dragon-like bird ridden by blue tribal characters and a brightly lit Tree of Souls. The annual Pepsi float brought many "oohs" and "ahhs" from the crowd, along with Friendly Market, Monsanto and other colorful entries. The event was previously orga-

If it fits, it flies free. Regular flyers with Makani Kai Air will note the new baggage sizer at our Honolulu facility. We are testing the sizer because customers argue with us about what constitutes a carry-on bag and what does not. The sizer is a way to eliminate confusion: if it fits, it flies free. If it doesn’t fit, no give hassles ok? Bags up to 9” x 14” x 22” are carry-ons. Each passenger can bring two carry-ons that fit in the bag sizer. Mahalo for flying with Makani Kai Air.

On Nov. 21, Molokai student Kuulei Alameida was awarded for her outstanding performance as the top female graduate with a Certificate of Competence in Cybersecurity in the 2015-2016 school year. According to her award letter, “the award was created to recognize the most exceptional male and female students in the University of Hawaii system in cybersecurity related programs.” Kuulei started her academic journey at UH Maui College, Molokai (UHMCM) in 2009. She was raised in Maunaloa and graduated from Molokai High School. Kuulei has earned two associate degrees: one in Liberal Arts, and the second in Business Careers. She is currently pursuing a bachelor ’s degree in Applied Business and Information Technology. Kuulei has shown true grit and determination in her academic pursuits. “Kuulei Almeida showed exceptional talent and abilities during her cybersecurity classes at UHMC,” said UH Maui College faculty member, Debasis Bhattacharya. “Faced with challenging lab exercises and written assignments, Ms. Almeida did great research and work in completing the challenges with quality and timeliness. Her desire to learn about cyber-
security above and beyond the scope of the classroom activities, is a shining example of what is desired in a student of the highest quality.” While Kuulei never envisioned herself in a career in technology as a high school student, she stated that she enjoys her technology based coursework and would encourage others to pursue this field of study. “With the advancements in technology, there is always going to be a need for cybersecurity professionals,” said Almeida. “We are always going to need to protect ourselves from hackers.” She plans to graduate from the program in Spring 2018. While she is not sure what she will do when she graduates, her dream job is to one day be a computer data analyst. Please join our campus `ohana in congratulating Kuulei Alamedia on this prestigious award. If you are inspired by Kuulei’s story and would like to learn more about UH Maui College’s Certificate of Competence in Cybersecurity, please contact CTE Transition Coordinator Liliana Napoleon at (808) 5534490. This certificate can be earned by taking six courses. Get started as early as January 2017 by registering for the Spring semester. The deadline to apply is Dec. 15.

Snow Goose Treated for Gunshot Wound By Arleone Dibben-Young An endangered Snow Goose that has been visiting Molokai was shot last week. On Sunday morning, Nov. 27, the Snow Goose was determined to have received a throughand-through gunshot wound to the head. It survived the shot. Federal law enforcement officers were alerted of the incident, and fliers were posted on the bulletin boards in town asking assistance from Molokai residents. Rudy DelaCruz with security at Hotel Molokai captured the injured bird Thursday evening so that it could receive medical care. The following morning, it was examined by Molokai Humane Society veterinarian Dr. Eric Jayne and Kathy Coelho, treated and placed on a recovery regime, and placed with Nene O Molokai for rehabilitation. The recovery is expected to take about a month. Because Molokai’s Snow Goose could be approached within a few feet, it is suspected that it was hatched in a
remote area of Siberia or Alaska where humans and vehicles are not present. The birds are rarely seen on Molokai, and typically migrate down the coastline via the western North American flyway to wintering grounds. The goose, a female about eight months old, frequented the Hotel Molokai swimming pool during the week that she had been observed on Molokai. The Snow Goose is protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Hawaii State laws. Guilty offences constitute a felony and violators may be fined up to $100,000 and up to two years in jail. Mahalo nui to the caring Molokai Police officers, Hotel Molokai staff, and the over 50 Molokai residents that called with information as to its whereabouts as it grazed along Kamehameha V Hwy from Kaunakakai to Kawela. Following recovery she will be banded and released at an undisclosed location.

Swimming, Paddling Splash into Season By Rick Schonely | Sports Reporter
W
ith Molokai High School athletes gearing up for the winter season of competition, the swimming and paddling teams are training to make a splash this year. The Boys and Girls Swim teams are preparing for the upcoming season with a new head coach, Amanda Labriola. Labriola comes to Molokai from Westerly, Rhode Island where she has coached numerous swim teams and also coached at Westfield State University. She has also been coaching the Molokai Dolphins Swim Team. She said she is excited for the high school season. “I have about 16 swimmers this year which is an awesome turnout," said Labriola. "We have got some great new talent added to our team this year which is awesome because of the [number] of good swimmers that graduated last year.” The team's first meet is at home on Jan. 4, followed by the MIL Invitational at Kihei Aquatic Center on Jan. 13-14. The team will return to that venue on Jan. 20-21, and close out the season with the MIL Championships scheduled for Feb. 3-4 and the state
championships the following weekend at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Molokai Canoe Paddling team is returning under the leadership of Head Coach Stefani Hubbard. Last year, the girls' team finished fifth in the state championships, and Hubbard is ready for another good season. “Compared to past years, our team is fairly young, both in age and paddling experience," she said. "But they certainly make up for it with will and desire. I am really looking forward to see when they put forth and how they measure up to the competition.” In her third season as head coach, Hubbard will have a mixed crew this year. “This is the first time in years that we've had any boys come out for paddling," she said. "This has resulted in us being able to create both a girls crew and a mixed crew. Both crews will be traveling to Maui at least three times to compete." Molokai will travel to Maui for all their races, starting on Dec. 17 and every weekend in the month of January. The State Canoe Racing Championships will be held at Keehi Lagoon on Oahu on Feb. 4.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Normally I cheer you on when you devote single-minded attention to pressing concerns, even if you become a bit obsessive. But right now, in accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to run wild and free as you sample lavish variety. It's prime time to survey a spectrum of spicy, shiny, and feisty possibilities . . . to entertain a host of ticklish riddles rather than to insist on prosaic answers. You have been authorized by the cosmos to fabricate your own temporary religion of playing around and messing around and fooling around.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Most high-quality suits worn by men are made from the wool of merino sheep raised in Australia. So says Nicholas Antongiavanni in his book The Suit: A Machiavellian Approach to Men's Style. There are now more than 100 million members of this breed, but they are all descendants of just two rams and four ewes from 18th-century Spain. How did that happen? It's a long story. Veterans Corner
75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor By Jesse Church Aloha all my fellow veterans, and residents of Molokai old Jesse with all the veterans news and upcoming events. On Dec. 7, 1941, 75 years ago on a sleepy Sunday morning, most of the U.S. Pacific Fleet laid at anchor at Pearl Harbor. Most of the sailors, Marines, and Army personnel were asleep in their bunks, but their slumber was terminated at 7 a.m. by Japanese war planes and bombs exploding. At the time of the first exploding bomb, which was 7:04 a.m., the United States was at war with the empire of Japan, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor a date that would live in infamy. Of all the remarks made after the attack, I believe the most prophetic words were said by our enemy, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who was educated at Harvard University. He said, "I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant and instilled in him a terrible resolve," and no truer words were ever spoken. Many thought the torpedo planes were a training exercise, or some pilot showing off. The Marine detachment at Kaneohe Naval Air Station heard thumping noises, and thinking it was part of some construction, went outside. When bullets sprayed the ground, they ran for cover and realized they were under attack. The USS Arizona took a direct hit, and with a tremendous blast, she came up in the air about 15 feet and broke in half, according to survivors. One recalled when the ship exploded,
bodies literally covered the harbor, it looked like someone thew a box of popcorn into the air. Arles Cole, who survived the USS West Virginia, remarked in 2010, ships were sunk, superstructures were on fire silhouetting burning hulks in the harbor, but it was an uplifting sight to see the U.S. flag flying on what was left of the West Virginia. In 2011, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association was disbanded because so few survivors remained. I know of only three Pearl Harbor survivors today, and I hope there are more. The three I know of are Alfred Rodrigues, 96, who was assigned to Bishop Point at the entrance to Pearl Harbor, Ray Chavez, 104, who was assigned to the USS Condor; and Donald Stratton, 94, who was assigned to the USS Arizona. Stratton said he “remembers a 1200 pound bomb hit us on the starboard side near number two turret and exploded a million pounds of ammunition, the infernal ignition wrenched the proud ship out of the water, amputating some 110 feet of the vessel." Joe George, a seaman on the nearby vessel, “threw a line”, and Stratton and five others made it a literal lifeline, and to this day, he credits George with his life. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor left 2,403 Americans dead and 1,178 wounded; nearly half of the dead -1,177 -- were from the USS Arizona. Remember old Jesse loves Molokai and all its people, every man, women and child from my heart, you are my family. If anyone would like to talk story give old Jesse a call at 553-3323, I would love to hear from you. Aloha and mahalo.

Office of Planning Recruitment Notice Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), Section 205A-3.5, establishes a public advisory body for the Office of Planning’s Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program (CZM Program). The Office of Planning is accepting applications from individuals on the islands of Lanai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu to serve on the public advisory board. The Marine and Coastal Zone Advocacy Council (MACZAC) is comprised of twelve members based on statewide geographic distribution – islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu – and a balanced representation of interests including: business, environment, practitioners of native Hawaiian culture, terrestrial and marine commerce, recreation, research, and tourism. The Office of Planning director appoints MACZAC members for a staggered term of not more than three years. MAC News Release An instrumental concert at Hotel Molokai on Dec. 14 will put community musical dedication on display. Mr. Bob Underwood, a teacher at Kaunakakai Elementary school, is known for his patience and sense of humor. He also has a great love for music, which he shares by teaching strings and woodwinds through the Molokai Instrumental Music Education (MIME) Program, a program he created which is sponsored by the Molokai Arts Center (MAC). Mr. Underwood’s classes are open to all ages and are free to the commu-
nity. The MIME Program also provides instruments on loan, which ensures that music education is available to everyone. Mr. Underwood’s classes perform at least two concerts every year, at the end of the spring and fall semesters, and this year’s fall concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6 pm. This is not only a performance learning opportunity for the students in his classes, but also a way for the community to see and hear what’s happening with music education on Molokai. The concert is open to the public and free of charge.
