ALOHA ʻĀINA ʻĀina Inspired. Aloha Driven.

LINE featuring:

ALOHA ʻĀINA FROM HEAD TO TOE

Something for Everybody released it's Na Mea Molokai Fall/Winter 2014 line at the first annual made in Maui county Festival at the MACC in Maui back in November. Aptly named, the “Aloha ʻĀina” line, this native, island-stylin look and first of its kind is a homage to the Artistsʻ home Ahupuaʻa valley in Molokai and showcases their Aloha for their ʻāina from the Mountain to the Sea. Not only is the Aloha ʻĀina Look a fashion forward movement in the locally made industry by combining Apparel and Accessories to be inter-dependent of eachother, but the Look respectively creates a fashion flow from the head down to the toe just as an Ahupuaʻa flows from Mauka to Makai bringing natureʻs elements to Native Fashionistas everywhere. Featuring 3 born and bred, native Artistsʻ hand-crafted work, this seasonʻs Na Mea Molokai line includes Wailani Tanaka, owner of Something For Everybody and the home store of Na Mea Molokai, Henohea Linker, creator of Kumu Henohea Native Bling and Maile Naehu, creator of Moʻolei Scarves. With more connections than the eye can see, their collaboration was meant to be in fashion and in life through koko connections and generational friendships. “Two of us actually grew up together in Honouliwai Valley. Our Momʻs are best friends, weʻre best friends and then Maile married Henoʻs cousin and now resides there. She actually had a dream about living on Molokaʻi before she even met her husband!” says Tanaka with a hearty laugh. “Thatʻs just the way things work here, everyone is connected somehow and through the sands of time, itʻs those connections that carry us through life. We are just blessed that our lifestyle carried us in to our livelihood and our businesses.” With their mana wahine flowing from every way, their labor of love and the colors and shapes of Hawaiʻiʻs flora and fauna illuminate through every piece and their ʻāina breathes through their fashion with concept deeply rooted in every Hawaiians na'au. “This Aloha ʻĀina concept is truly built on relevancy to be a reminder to our people of the inter-dependent way of life that our Kupuna once thrived so that we may continue that legacy and pilina, that connection we all have to our ʻāina and each other as Hawaiians. Relevancy is only relevant if that world and that pilina, is real to you and thatʻs what we want the buyers to connect to.” says Linker. Naehu points out, “Fashion is Art and Art is just a reflection of the world around us and the feelings inside of us and that is why we chose to call this line

“ALOHA ʻĀINA.”

LEI-ING OF THE LAND Laying the foundation on a kino wahine, female body, is the Aloha ʻĀina design itself representing the natural elements of our Hōnua. The Wai, ʻAi and Kai are showcased through three tribal signs. The Wai element, where we get our fresh water from is represented with the piko swirl for the lani, makani and ao-sky, winds and clouds, the ʻAi where we get our food from is shown with the triangle for ʻāina, kuahiwi and awāwa, the land, mountains and valleys and the Kai, our sea is represented with the scallop and scale for the lihikai and kai moana, shoreline and sea.

REMINDING THE BODY

HOʻOHALIʻA Built on relevancy to be a reminder to our people of the inter-dependent way of life that our Kupuna once thrived, the Aloha ʻĀina design allows the Wahine to be reminiscent of her Aloha for her ʻĀina so that we may continue that legacy and pilina, that connection we all have to our ʻāina and each other as Hawaiians. Relevancy is only relevant if that world and that pilina, is real to you.

STARTING AT THE POʻO

Beginning at the head of a Wahine, the Papale Aloha hats whisper the mindset of the Artistsʻ way of life from their past, present and future and are placed at the top representing where the voice of the winds rest at the top of a Valley.

AVAILABLE IN ALL COLORS OF THE RAINBOW and SHELL-IFIED DESIGNS

$20 TO $35

ALOHA HĀLOA Starting with our Aloha for our first ancestor and first Kalo plant, Hāloa, this hat represents the interdependency of Hawaiians to our ʻĀina to care for our older brother who will in turn take care of us forever which is why it is important to Aloha Hāloa.

HAWAIʻI ALOHA Moving on to our Aloha for our entire pae ʻāina, island chain and people as a whole, this hat is also meant to ring a reminiscent cord in our soul for our State Anthem “Hawaii Aloha” and the togetherness we all feel each time we sing it.

ALOHA IS OUR HUSTLE Bringing Aloha to the present where it is not easy to be Hawaiian in todayʻs world, we have to multiple jobs and hustle on the side, there is a price we pay to have Paradise as our home. But as long as we have Aloha in our hearts, it will shine through whatever we choose and have to do.

LIVE ALOHA. ALOHA LIVES. Finally ending with one of the most famous sayings to “Live Aloha,” this hat showcases the importance of why we do Live Aloha and that is to perpetuate the Aloha spirit so that it may Live on forever in and around all of us.

ʻ Ā I NA I N S P I R E D Moving into the mountains, youʻll find Kumu Henohea Native Blingʻs use of the most tribal and native shapes, triangles, spirals and chevrons to please the eye and doubly signify the mountainous elements of the uplands. All pieces are original, handcrafted native jewelry designs made with tideline gathered jewels of the sea on Molokai, Hawaiʻi. Each one of a kind creation is inspired by and gifted from nature, with the intention of enhancing the natural beauty that lies within every Wahine. This natural beauty accentuated by a KHNB creation, transforms the female into a kumu, or source, of something henohea, beautiful or cherished. Each piece of bling has kaona, or hidden meaning to its name to further strengthen the bond between a wahineʻs spirit and beauty. Most of the sea glass designs featured are wrapped with the KHNB “H” signature wrap also symbolizing the henohea of not only the Native Bling but also the Wahine wearing it.

KAI JEWELED BY

$15 or (2) for $25

Resting on the bosom of the body, youハサll find scarves inspired by the colors of and from the ハサト(na bursting in to rainbows like the Lei Aloha scarf or the valleys lushness like the Lei Maile encompassing the upper body like they naturally do in a valley.

AT THE CORE AND PIKO

OF THE AHUPUAʻA

you will find the ʻAi of the valley from which all of our food source comes from and represented with the Kalo and Hawaiianʻs first ancestor, H ā l o a . Necklaces are hung to the piko reminding us all to look within and to the past in life.

BE JEWELED WITH

Continuing down to the Shore, where the land meets the sea, buyers will find tide pool Purse Hooks capturing sand and shells sealed in time allowing the buyer to take with them their one hanau, their birthsands wherever lifeʻs journey should lead. The lihikai or shoreline adorns the Wahineʻs wrist with bracelets and bangles and finally ending at the bottom, the Kai, the Anklets shine with sea glass and shells and even beach-jeweled slippers with beach-combed ʻopihi to represent the solid foundation of which Ahupuaʻa are built.

TIPSU Wear Winterʻs colors to warm up your wardrobe this Holiday Season!

Whether it was a particular decade or a trip to a special place, Designers are fascinated with the beauty of the past and the spirit of the present—recreating it with color, fabric and style this fall season. Design and color were inspired by everything from books, artisan crafts, photography and retro architecture, to exotic landscapes and the children of rock legends. The diverse color palette takes us on an adventure spanning 100 years—a season roused by various vantage points from past and present. “This is a season of untypical colors—more reflective of the imagination and ingenuity, which makes for an artful collection of colors and combinations not bound by the usual hues for fall,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "There is a feminine mystique that is reflected throughout the palette, inspired by the increasing need for women everywhere to create an individual imprint." Sangria, an exotic red that evokes a sense of glamorous adventures and faraway destinations is enhanced by Aurora Red, a more sophisticated shade that adds verve and spark. The grown-up reds are followed by two extremes of the purple family that intrigue the eye and inspire the imagination. Mauve Mist, a romantic and elegant purple shade, reminds us of the deco era and stimulates a sense of femininity and empowerment, while Radiant Orchid, a captivating and adaptable shade, enchants the complete spectrum. Pair either with Cypress, a majestic and powerful green; indicative of its name, this shade has a towering presence and serves as a stunning perennial. With its slightly green undertone, Bright Cobalt offers a subtle twist on the traditional cobalt blue, which unifies this season’s blues. Likewise, Royal Blue, which is both evocative and dignified, provides more complexity and excitement than the average navy, while still remaining versatile. Pair Bright Cobalt with Sangria and Cypress, or Royal Blue with Mauve Mist and Aluminum, a futuristic stainless steel shade that serves as a complex neutral. Similar to Sangria, Cognac’s name alone leads to glamorous illusions. This classy and cultured brown takes a typical autumnal color to a sumptuous realm, making the shade unexpectedly ideal for evening wear. Adding a ray of sunlight and warmth, optimistic Misted Yellow alludes to the promise of spring to come. Both Cognac and Misted Yellow will also be prevalent in prints—a surprisingly popular trend this fall season.
