With so many different types of motor scooters available today buyers must do their homework before making a purchase. Vespa, Honda, Piaggio, big engine, small engine, gas, electric, mobility, foldable, seats, handgrips, where do I start? Before the 1920s it was an easy decision, a foot-powered push scooter or none at all. But once Gino Tsai from Shanghai, Taiwan developed the Razor scooter it changed everything. His motor scooters became popular so quickly there were people waiting in line for six months before they could get one. In the 1950s companies like Vespa in the UK started selling the first of their gas motor scooters. It was a big hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and quickly became a big hit in the UK as well. Vespa sold over 125,000 in the UK between the years of 1950 to 1958. Piaggio from Vespa and Lambretta from Innocenti started selling their models in Italy and France too, quickly becoming the vehicles that everyone had to own. By the early 1950s the sale of motor scooters topped 1 million a year in France alone. Because of its popularity other countries such as France and Germany decided to get in on the boom by manufacturing their own models.

Today, after more than 50 years since the first gas scooters appeared, there are many different makes and models. We have electric, gas powered, foldable, mobility and utility motor scooters dotting the globe. There are specialized scooters for just about every task. 0 They have become a worldwide phenomenon because they are cheap to own, economical to operate, are very handy and functional, and most of all they are a lot of fun. But with all of the makes and models which one is right for you? Let's start with the different types. Gas motor scooters are the fastest around. They will take you longer distances and reach higher speeds than any of the other varieties. There are smaller and lighter models that will be perfect for running errands around town while the larger and heavier touring models will take you on longer trips. Plus, the larger the gas tank the farther you can travel before needing to stop at a service station.

Electric varieties are a little more economical to run, but will usually travel only about 10 or 15 miles before needing a recharge. Their battery capacity has improved dramatically over the years, but they cannot be taken for long trips due to the fact that their batteries will need recharging periodically. continued from page 8 ers have a large storage capacity under the seat so they are ideal for trips to the grocery store or for other light shopping sprees. The elderly or handicapped typically use what is referred to as mobility scooters. These are usually electric models and have 3 or 4 wheels for extra stability. These models give the elderly or disabled the ability to get about in their homes or around the neighborhood more easily. Without mobility scooters many of the disability-impaired would be confined to their beds. Another very popular type is the foldable scooter. These are very small and are made for short trips around town. They are particularly popular among the younger crowds. The beauty of these models is that they are extremely compact and can be folded for storage in small places. If you work just a few miles from your home you can travel to work on your folding scooter and then fold it up and put it underneath your desk at work. Very handy. There are also utility scooters which can be used for many different purposes. They can be used as golf carts or for hauling things. Many big businesses use these types for getting around their factories. Schools use them for driving through the parking lot, checking for cars that shouldn't be there. Major league sports stadiums use them to drive people from one place to another. These are wonderful vehicles that can be used for a variety of reasons. Once you've decided which type is right for your needs the next step is to figure out what options, if any, you would like included on your vehicle. Of course you can choose from many different colors and designs, but there are other options available to you. You can choose from the many varieties of covers, locks (for security), cases or side bags for storage, helmets, seats, handgrips, windshields or windscreens, backrests for touring, chrome kits, rear luggage racks and many more options. The list of accessories can go on for quite some time. As a rule of thumb first choose the type of scooter you want, whether it be electric, gas, foldable or utility. This is the easy part because the type you purchase will depend upon your needs. Once that decision has been made look at several popular models in your area and decide which one looks and feels right to you. Most have accessories that are manufactured for a specific model so accessories cannot be decided upon until you know which motor scooter you are going to buy. Once you've decided which accessories you want for the model you chose it's a simple matter of driving your scooter out of the dealership. And it's nothing but fun from there on out.

Gas scooters have come a long way over the past 50 years. They are functional, fun, convenient and cheap. What more could you ask for?

The first patents for scooters go back as far as 1921. The Razor scooter was later developed by Gino Tsai in Shanghai, Taiwan and became an instant hit with the public. It didn't take long for motor scooter popularity to expand all over the globe. Even before 1950 there were as many as 110,000 scooters on the road in Italy alone. It has been just a little over 50 years since the Vespa-Douglas Corporation in the UK sold their first gas scooters. The Douglas corporation was on the verge of bankruptcy when they first began selling their gas scooters. It was a big hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and saved the company from possible financial ruin. From 1950 to 1958 Vespa sold over 125,000 of their gas powered scooters in the UK. Why the great success? During this period the European countries didn't have a great deal of money and there was not much gas available to the public. Due to the scarcity of gasoline and the high gas mileage of the gas motor scooter it's popularity quickly escalated. It didn't take long for the Italian models (the Piaggio from Vespa and the Lambretta from Innocenti) to branch out to other countries. In France they became so popular the French tried to get in on the boom by manufacturing their own. By the early to mid 1950s the sale of gas scooters climbed to about 1 million a year in France alone. Other countries wanted to profit from the newest craze and tried to climb on the band wagon. While some were successful others were not. Germany began to manufacture larger touring models, but this did not satisfy the public in the way the smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient models from Italy and France did. These smaller models were extremely popular in the European market. Tourist Scooters Manufacturers in Germany built some very strong and powerful versions and were the first to install electric starters. These larger versions were great for traveling, touring and even racing, but were not as popular as the smaller, cheaper, more efficient models used for traveling shorter distances around town. Vespa began marketing a couple of very popular gas powered MOMENTUM MONTHLY | AUGUST 2012

scooters from Piaggio, the GS 125cc and the GS 150cc. These were improved versions of the earlier models for several reasons. The biggest reason is probably because the heavy gear mechanism rods were replaced by smaller and lighter cables. France's Roussey Scooters tried to one-up the Italian competition by coming out with a 175cc model. These were very nice vehicles and included the first water-cooled engines along with other new features, but because it had a pull-start it could not compete with the newer models from Italy that were already offering versions with electric starts. As these wonderful vehicles have evolved over the years they have become increasingly more popular all over the world. Today they are everywhere. They are cheap to purchase, economical to operate, and are very handy and functional. These are not toys and are genuinely a lot of fun to ride. Models for the handicapped are usually called mobility scooters. Folding varieties can be folded up and conveniently stored under desks, in closets or in other tiny areas and utility types are used for many different purposes. They are more popular than go karts, mini bikes or go carts. Scooters, sometimes called mopeds or go peds, are very functional, convenient and are here to stay.

2014 PORSCHE 918 By Laura Burstein The Porsche 918 Spyder goes into production September 2013 and on sale in the U.S. near the end of the year. Porsche hasn't said but we're guessing that means it will be a 2014 model. MSRP will be $845,000, Porsche said. The world caught its first glimpse of the Porsche 918 Sypder plug-in hybrid concept in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. Five months later, Stuttgart announced the two-seater

With its futuristic, multi-faceted (some say overdone) styling, the 918 may someday take its place as the first Porsche supercar since the long-planned and short-lived Carrera GT, a $440,000 mid-engine which ended production in 2006. The Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a 500-horsepower, V8 gasoline-powered engine and two electric motors (one each on the front and rear axle) that generate a combined 160 kilowatts of power, roughly the equivalent of 218 hp, for a total of 718 hp. The powertrain is mated to Porsche's dualclutch PDK transmission for lighteningquick shifts. Energy is stored in a fluid-

cooled lithium-ion battery, which can be charged by plugging into a suitable electrical outlet. Porsche, known for putting out conservative specs on its cars, claims the 918 Spyder is capable of achieving fuel economy numbers equivalent to 78 miles per gallon. But with a 0-to-100 km/h (about 62 mph) time of less than 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph, we're guessing most drivers won't be out hypermiling.

continued from page 14 variable, Porsche isn't giving any range or fuel economy numbers right now. Sport Hybrid Mode: Uses both drive systems, but with heavier focus on performance. Power is biased toward the rear wheels and uses Torque Vectoring for enhanced driving dynamics. No numbers here, either. Race Hybrid Mode: Full power, with pushto-pass E-Boost. Batteries must be fully charged to use this mode, and no doubt EPA ratings are abysmally low. But you'll look great passing the tool in the Ferrari next to you on the freeway. The 918 Spyder also converts kinetic energy from braking into electrical energy that gets stored in the battery to provide an on-demand power boost for fast

acceleration. But this is not to be confused with KERS, which some might recognize as the promising but sometimes problematic technology found in recent incarnations of Formula 1 cars, as well as Porsche's new experimental 918 RSR racecar.

On Sale: Late 2013 Expected Pricing: $845,000

All that extra technology means extra weight. So cutting bulk on the Porsche 918 Spyder was crucial. Porsche used a race-inspired monocoque body shell made of carbon-fiberreinforced plastic (CFP), as well as magnesium and aluminum throughout the inner workings of the concept car to achieve a curb weight of 3,285 pounds. However, Porsche has yet to tell us what type of roof will be used on the production car, which could tweak that number.

Overview Cadillac is introducing a new full-size sedan for 2013. The 2013 Cadillac XTS fills a hole left in the Cadillac lineup since production of the STS and DTS ended a couple of years ago. In their place is the 2013 Cadillac XTS, a roomy cruiser that shows off the latest technology, upgraded interior materials and a refined Cadillac design.

Exterior styling on the Cadillac XTS is bold, but softer than on other models we've seen from the brand in the past few years. Also notable is the use of premium interior materials, such as leather upholstery as standard equipment, as well as a fully configurable electronic TFT (thin-film transistor) instrument cluster in front of the driver. The Cadillac XTS is the first model to use CUE, an acronym for Cadillac User Experience. The system features a large touchscreen and uses proximity sensors, haptic feedback and voice recognition to control phone, audio and navigation functions. CUE comes standard on all XTS models, but navigation costs extra on the two lower trim levels. To sweeten the deal, Cadillac is including an iPad with all new XTS purchases, pre-loaded with an app that

helps owners learn how to use the CUE system.

Underneath the new wrappings are decidedly familiar components. Namely, General Motors' Premium Epsilon platform, originally developed by Opel and used in several variations on GM vehicles worldwide, including the current Buick LaCrosse. The 2013 Cadillac XTS is powered by GM's much-used 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated V6 engine found on other Cadillac and Chevrolet models. Same goes for the 6speed automatic transmission. The new Cadillac XTS is longer than the old STS, shorter than the DTS, though the XTS rides on a much shorter wheelbase (111.7 inches). The XTS is slightly wider than the STS but 2 inches narrower than the DTS. The front seats in the new XTS are slightly roomier than those in the STS and DTS. The 3.6-liter V6 in the new XTS delivers 304 horsepower at 6800 rpm, 264 poundfeet of torque at 5200 rpm. That's similar to the output of the old STS V6 model. Fuel economy in the Cadillac XTS is an EPAestimated 17/28 miles per gallon

City/Highway. The XTS is much more efficient on the highway than the old STS and DTS models, which were rated 15/23 mpg. The new Cadillac XTS offers Europeaninspired ride and handling, quality materials, and plenty of standard features. And it retails for much less than comparable models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Hyundai, making it a compelling value. Walkaround While it retains styling cues that are distinctly Cadillac, the new Cadillac XTS exterior is softer and more refined than other models in the lineup. Sleeker lines are favored over razor-sharp creases and angles. Headlamps appear more stretched back than on the smaller Cadillac CTS. And the shape of the front grille gives the XTS an expression that's more agreeable than angry. In back, the rear is crisp and tidy, keeping the signature Cadillac vertical tail lamps without looking too busy. All models above the base trim have a dual exhaust integrated into the rear fascia for an even cleaner look. But one could never dismiss the XTS as demure. It still sports plenty of bling, like polished chrome trim around windows, doors and deck lid that glisten in the sun. Not to mention the expansive chromed grille. Paired with its Cadillac badge, the face of the XTS is unmistakable as a Cadillac in a rearview mirror. Model Lineup The 2013 Cadillac XTS comes standard with front-wheel drive and is available with all-wheel drive (AWD). Several trim levels are available. All come with the 3.6-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac XTS ($44,075) comes standard with leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, CUE touchscreen interface with Bluetooth phone capability and USB ports, Bose audio with CD player and HD radio, See Cadillac

XTS Luxury Collection ($48,690) adds a dual integrated exhaust, rearview camera, front parking sensors, rain sensing wipers, illuminated exterior door handles, cargo net, memory functions, heated steering wheel, wood shift lever, heated/ventilated front seats, adjustable front-seat thigh bolster, heated rear seats, additional wood interior trim and interior ambient lighting. All-wheel drive is available ($50,915). Options include a sunroof, compact spare tire ($350), navigation with voice recognition ($795). The Driver Awareness Package ($890) includes a blind spot monitoring system, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and forward collision alert. Premium Collection ($53,585) comes with the Driver Awareness Package, a reconfigurable digital instrument cluster, head-up display, three-zone climate control, a 110volt power outlet and an upgraded Bose Surround system with CD player and navigation. XTS Premium Collection AWD ($55,810) is also available. Options include 20-inch wheels, a sunroof ($1,450), rear sunshades ($250) and a Driver Assist Package, which bundles active safety features including adaptive cruise control, front and rear automatic braking and automatic collision preparation. XTS Platinum Collection ($58,160) and AWD ($60,385) get unique 20-inch wheels, a unique grille design, sunroof, rear sunshades, upgraded leather upholstery, leathercovered dash and doors, microfiber suede headliner, premium floor mats, unique wood trim, and the Driver Assist Package. Safety features on all models include brake assist, stability and traction control, frontseat knee airbags and rear thorax air bags. The optional Driver Awareness Package and Driver Assist Package add safety features that can help a driver avoid or reduce the severity of a crash. The optional rearview camera can help the driver spot a child behind the car when backing up. Optional all-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions.

Driving Impressions The chassis of the Cadillac XTS is incredibly stable and composed, even around twisty canyon corners. Standard Magnetic Ride Control manages the weight of the 4,006-pound XTS masterfully, and provides firm yet comfortable support, with very little if any body roll around corners. The cabin was quiet, with wind and road noise scarcely detectable. Huge Brembo brakes were solid and confidence-inspiring. We found steering to be responsive, with a satisfying, connected feel that wasn't too light or two weighty. This first-generation XTS uses hydraulic steering, though Cadillac product specialists told us an allnew electric steering system is currently in development.

Handling is most rewarding in Sport mode, which, to our chagrin, can only be accessed by shifting the gearbox into Manual and using the buttons on the back of the steering wheel to change gears. While in Drive, the XTS remains in normal Comfort mode. Acceleration-wise, the XTS seemed to lack oomph, even in Sport mode. Caddy's 3.6liter V6 engine isn't wimpy, but peak horsepower and torque kick in pretty high on the tach, and we suspect attempts at maximizing fuel economy have stripped the XTS of its full performance potential. Fuel economy for the Cadillac XTS is an EPA-estimated 17/28 mpg City/Highway. The transmission also kept us wanting. Third gear was just too tall, but second was just too low, making us feel like Goldilocks through many uphill climbs and steep switchbacks. We were also surprised that, with competitors using 7- and 8-speed transmissions, GM is still using its aging 6-speed automatic on an all-new sedan. If Cadillac engineers could address these powertrain issues, the XTS could catapult to the top of its class.
