POINT OF VIEW by Barry Thompson
HAVING THE RIGHT BOAT T
his summer will be my fourth with my McLay 4.8 Fortress, and I must admit that I am still enjoying it as much as I did when I first brought it home after the 2014 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show. It was reasonably bland then with an unpainted hull coated in Nyalic, and a Mercury 65 tiller steer outboard on the transom. Living by the beach and having a tractor to launch is a real bonus and as the majority of my ‘none work related’ boating activity is fishing, the McLay has proven the ideal boat. What impressed me from the start and still does, is the space the boat provides, the excellent storage due to the high casting deck and it’s handling in a choppy sea. Okay so it’s still a small boat, and I do most of my fishing inside the 30m mark between Tiri Tiri Matangi Island and Kawau Island. The expansive soft bottom of the area allows me to drift with lures (See page 160 this issue) and then there are still plenty of rocky spots around the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and the Islands to anchor and burley up. You would be surprised how many good size snapper I get without even leaving Manly Bay. Over the years I have added a lot to the boat and that all started when I had it wrapped by LetterRip in blue vinyl, complete with a jet-powered Snapper. I am pleased to say that after all this time the wrap is still in perfect condition. The Mercury 65 with the basic tiller didn’t stay on for long as I found it too slow and so I changed to a Mercury 75hp four stroke, the smallest in the 2.1 litre, four-cylinder range that goes right through to 115hp. The 75,80,90,100 & 115 are all identical weight (163 kg) and size, with the only difference is they are ‘chipped’ for the appropriate horsepower. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16
I have had a Big Tiller right from the start and because of the way the steering arm is arranged on the outboard I needed to add an extended transom bracket to get enough clearance from the engine well when turning. While the 75hp was great, when it came time to change the engine before last season, I went for the slightly more grunty 80hp. Honestly, there wasn’t much performance variance between the two, and the fuel consumption difference was negligible. But always been one for speed, I have just had Gulfland Marine fit a Mercury 90, which will give me close to 70 km/h. However, I don’t see me changing my much slower cruise speed to the fishing grounds, which never take me more than 20mins. On an average day’s fishing, I use about ½ of a 22-litre tote tank, so it’s very economical boating even at Auckland’s horrendous fuel prices. I added a Humminbird 5” MFD and this year upgraded to a Humminbird Helix 9 with all the side and down imaging. Even had a lesson on how to use it. I have a Minn Kota Riptide Saltwater Terrova, which I reckon is the best fishing item I have. I drift and then when there is some action, just hit spot lock and don’t need to anchor. Until recently I have had a capstan winch, which while I don’t use often is a good back up to the Minn Kota. I have always been a fan of the drum winch, so I decided to make the change and have just fitted a Viper Micro 1000 drum winch. (See article page 142 this issue) I can now do all my anchoring from the helm and have more time for fishing. I am looking forward to spending a lot of time on the water this summer and hope to see you out there — happy fishing.

PINNACLE 830 FOR MR FISHING ADVENTURES
HE PINNACLE 830 is the latest launching by Pinnacle Boats in Whitianga and continues their premise for of high quality custom designs. The boat was built for a new fishing charter operation ‘Mr Fishing Adventures Ltd’ that operates all over the upper half of the North Island targeting both fresh and saltwater species. The Scott Robson design has an overall length of 8.38m, beam of 2.5m with a tow weight of around 2600kg. It features a 6mm thick alloy hull with 4mm used in the sides and superstructure. Built to rigid survey standards, Pinnacle Boats also has one of only a handful of welders qualified to Lloyd’s standard in New Zealand working on the build. Powering the new 830 is a Honda 250 fed via a 600L fuel tank giving the skipper and crew extended daily trips on the water before needing to refuel. Highly customised to suit the owners requirements, the Scott Robson monohedron hull was chosen for its efficiency and excellent sea keeping ability with its 20 deg deadrise providing a comfortable ride for passengers and ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16

OLD4NEW IS BACK TO SAVE LIVES THIS SUMMER Kiwi boaties across the country will have the opportunity to check and upgrade their lifejackets thanks to Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign back again this summer. From 1 December, the Old4New van will visit popular boat ramps and key locations all over the country, giving boaties the chance to bring in their old, damaged or out-of-date lifejackets for a great discount on brand-new, quality Hutchwilco lifejackets. “Lifejackets save lives, but old lifejackets are no good in an emergency,” says Coastguard CEO Patrick Holmes. “Lifejackets that are over ten years old should be replaced even if they look ok to the eye. Seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float which is a serious concern in an emergency. “Worryingly, many people are also still using lifejackets filled with kapok – a fluffy plant fibre similar to cotton which can absorb water. These lifejackets are extremely dangerous so if you have one, destroy it immediately and replace it with a new, modern one.” This year the Old4New van will reach a number of new locations, including the Taranaki region and Haast, Franz Josef and Hokitika on the west coast of the South Island, meaning even more Kiwis can check their lifejackets and stay safe on the water. Sue Tucker, Old4New Community Ambassador agrees, “Each year we have people come to the Old4New van with lifejackets that are 30, 40 and even 50 years old, New Zealanders needs to be aware that lifejackets don’t last a lifetime. “Lifejackets, including inflatable versions, need to be checked each year. If you’re in any doubt as to how to check your lifejacket, visit the Old4new van and we’ll show you exactly what you need to do and look out for.” For those who aren’t able to come to the Old4New van, retailer Boating and Outdoors are once again supporting the initiative by offering the Old4New trade in deal at their stores nationwide during specific weeks of the campaign. Since the inception of Old4New, over 10,000 old or damaged lifejackets have been traded in and upgraded, meaning thousands of Kiwis are now safer out on the water. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is delivered with generous funding from Maritime New Zealand and support from the Southern Trust in partnership with Kiwi companies Hutchwilco and the Giltrap Group. AURANGA-BASED HALL Marine Design is, as its name so succinctly states, primarily a marine design company. It is, however, quickly building something of a reputation as a specialist, semi-custom aluminium boat builder, too. After starting out with a range of kitset options, with 40 or more now on the water, in response to increasing demand they began offering turnkey packages. Five of these, marketed under the Purekraft label, have hit the water so far and many more are currently in the planning stages. The hardtop Purekraft 700 is their largest to date with the others being a 650 Cross Cab, a 630 Hard Top and two 550 Centre Consoles. All feature the standard HMD hull but each has been specifically designed for a particular client. The 700, for example, is for a fishing-focused owner who likes to combine his love of bottom and game fishing with spending weekends cruising with his family. SUPER ATTRACTIVE FINISH An old fishing mate of mine was fond of saying that his boat might be a fishing boat but it didn’t have to look or smell like one. There is no doubt that this Purekraft 700 is primarily a dedicated fishing boat yet, sitting alongside the jetty at Tauranga’s Sulphur Point ramp, it certainly doesn’t look like one. There is, for example, virtually no bare aluminium in sight. It has either been covered in SeaDek or vinyl panels, painted or powder coated, or polished to a glass-like sheen. The use of the SeaDek is particularly impressive. These good-looking, easy-to-stand-on panels cover the entire cockpit sole, the coamings, the transom top, the step-thru and the aft platform. Many are also embossed with the Purekraft logo. Vinyl ceiling and side panels in the hardtop are a definite step up from the standard frontrunner and are a feature usually found on far bigger — and far more expensive — vessels. The level of finish is also exceptionally high for an aluminium fishing boat. The welds are almost invisible in many cases and the standard of painting is impressive. Even the integral handrails that run up the trailing edges of the hardtop and support the rocket launcher look like they belong and do not detract from the boat’s overall appearance. CRAFTED TRANSOM The Purekraft 700’s transom is a thing of beauty and it is obvious that an enormous amount of thought has gone into its design. HMD’s managing director Jarrod Hall is one of those who prefers his transom walkthrough (and the nowobligatory livebait tank under them) on the starboard side. This gives him direct sight-lines into the water when collecting swimmers or divers and makes it easier to dock when approaching on starboard. The livebait tank features a hidden overflow under the duckboard and the often-dead space in the quarter

alongside the step-thru has been cleverly used for a lined trash locker. A retractable dive ladder disappears neatly into the duckboard when not in use. A striking black powder-coated custom designed and built bait station dominates the transom top. It is an innovative bit of kit. In addition to the HDPE food grade plastic cutting board, three rod holders, two drink holders and two knife slots, the station also has a pull-out drawer and a bottle opener, complete with 3D-printed bottle cap catcher! Alongside the bait station is a combination tuna tube/ dive bottle locker. It has been carefully designed to take either two painted alloy tuna tubes, complete with quick release plumbing, or a pair of dive bottles, depending on how the owner wishes to spend his day. The 700’s dual batteries, isolating switches and the like are sensibly housed high in the transom, protected by a plastic hatch cover and safely out of harm’s way. DUAL PERSONALITY COCKPIT With the 700’s owner wanting a cockpit suitable for both full-on fishing and family cruising, Jarrod and his HMD design team have seized the opportunity to show how he can have both. In addition to all those fishing features in and around the transom, there are also deep toekicks on each side, extra wide side lockers (with a cunninglyALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16

positioned opening in the forward part of the port one for stowing extra long rods and gaffs) and a fully-plumbed washdown hose to clean up any mess. There are also two large pull-out drawers, suitable for all manner of tackle, positioned between the two port seats under the hardtop. There are also three rod holders in each coaming and a further six in the rocket launcher. When the fishing is done and its time to relax, the 700’s cockpit transforms in a most remarkable way. The aft port seat tilts through 90 degrees, converting into an oak table with room underneath for a 55-litre chilly bin. Meanwhile, on starboard, with a push of a button, the aft seat hydraulically extends into a lounger and its base opens up to reveal a substantial 110-litre chilly bin on castor wheels. There is also a handy cooker under the port crew seat for boiling the kettle or cooking the catch. footrests and, in the case of the skipper, a fold-up bolster that makes it equally as comfortable to stand as to sit. Jarrod says the vinyl ceiling panels are not only more attractive, they are easier to clean and absorb less water as well. Also helping to ensure an absolute minimum of water retention under the hardtop is the brace of custom designed and built side windows that, when combined with the small ventilation hatch above the hem station, ensures really good airflow, even on the stuffiest of days. From a driver’s point of view, the helm is very nicely laid out. The single piece windscreen, unusual on this size of boat, ensures great visibility and the Garmin GPSMap XSV is easy to read both sitting and standing. All the necessary gauges and controls are within easy reach and one can quickly and simply control the Fusion stereo, Hella red/white overhead LED lights, Maxwell RC6 windlass or the Garmin VHF with a minimum of movement. The Purekraft 700 also boasts a completely private, lockable cabin, thanks to an impressive-looking, sold aluminium, sliding door. Inside, there are thick, comfortable bunk cushions, well positioned back rests WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
creating handy side lockers and an electric flush toilet. WELL BALANCED Like all HMD designs, the Purekraft 700HT features a high bow, fine entry, 18-degree deadrise and a warping hull. A lot of attention has also been paid to weight distribution and it shows. Despite a trailerable weight slightly in excess of 2.5 tonnes, the use of robust 5083 aluminium, a substantial hardtop and a 300-litre fuel capacity, this 7.20m LOA vessel is

capable of 35 knots or more (in one sea trial, it hit 38). This is despite being powered by a latest model Honda 225hp outboard, which sits at the bottom end of the 700’s recommended horsepower range. At cruising revs, the Purekraft delivers a respectable 22.8 knots at 4000rpm and 25.8 knots at 4500rpm. Consumption at those revs is also reasonable at 30.7 L/h and 35 L/h respectively. In terms of handling, the 700 proves remarkably responsive throughout the range and, rather
importantly for those chasing gamefish or looking to deliver a comfortable ride in rough weather, is able to stay on the plane at quite low speeds. With correct weight distribution such a design priority, it is no surprise that the 700 is so well balanced. It turns effortlessly and corners tightly without any sign of untoward behaviour, even at high speeds. For a hardtop model, it also surprisingly needs little thwart trim and, when reversing, shows no tendency to sea-cocking, even at very low speeds.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE Barry Thompson tells us about how he recently fitted a Viper Micro 1000 drum winch to his McLay Fortress 4.8 and why he wished he had done it years ago. I should have done this year’s ago.
F
OR A FEW YEARS I HAVE BEEN contemplating the idea of installing a drum winch in my McLay Fortress 4.8 and having written a number of features on them and seen them working in boats, I thought I should actually do it. There are over 50 units on the market from ten manufacturers, so I had plenty to pick from. The first thing to look at was the anchor locker space available and making sure that I could fit a unit in. Being a small boat, the anchor locker is accordingly not huge, but it never needed to be. I have about 60m of soft rope, and along with 5m of chain, and that has always been plenty. After checking out the dimensions of the drums and if I could fit them in with the electric motor at whatever ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16

angle, I reduced the list to less than six. While I wasn’t too concerned about what they weighed, the range was between 10 kg to 15 kg, so they were light anyway. The max loads varied from 100 kg to 180 kg and the max hold from 500 kg to 2000kg. THE DRUM WINCH Using a capstan winch I had mounted on an alloy post has always worked well over the years, but I did have to go forward to operate it. Plus in recent years I have hardly used the capstan and anchor, favouring my Minn Kota and using the GPS activated spot lock to hold position over the fishing spot. However, there are times that I do like to anchor and that’s when the conventional anchor system comes in handy. But it was time for a change, so in the end, I could WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
only choose one. I decided on the Viper S Series 1000 Micro, the first with a 316 stainless steel marine gearbox on a drum anchor winch. The Viper “S” Series has a 1000W electric motor, with a fall rate of 50 meters per minute and a retrieval rate of 45 meters per minute. One neat aspect of the latest Viper S 1000 is it has an emergency manual release safety feature. This enables you to deploy your anchor if your boat has lost all power and is heading for a cliff, sandbank or a bar crossing. Making sure you can safely anchor your boat avoiding dangerous drifting into a hazardous location. The winch will allow the anchor to release to the seabed. There’s also more torque than a conventional drum winch, three support bearings hugging a 28mm one-piece solid shaft and a 90 deg welded housing bracket which closes up the gap between your drum (preventing rope jams) and does not require any additional guards. The drum winch comes with just about everything you need to install it, including a 5mm stainless steel sandwich plate, anchor roller, all required stainless steel bolts/screws/nylocs/washers, two faceplates WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
depending on your dash space and even a stainless steel anchor swivel are included. There is also a 200amp reversing solenoid, LED rocker switch and circuit breaker included in the box, plus full instructions and templates for installation. As long as I followed the instructions, it should be an easy fit. Well maybe! It is also supplied with 60m of 6mm double braid rope, pre-spliced to 6m of 6mm galvanised short link anchor chain. Considering I do the majority of my fishing in less than 30m, that’s more than suitable. To add to that, I also purchased the factory made Bell Marine

tinned copper marine wiring looms and Lewmar Delta 4 kg anchor. THE INSTALLATION Now I thought yep, this is something I can do myself so set about working out the best place to fit things and make the installation as easy as possible. First I needed to remove the existing capstan winch and the wiring to it, which unfortunately left a hole in the forward area of the casting deck. I will probably cover that with some U-Deck. With this removed I then looked at the best place to install the drum winch inside the anchor locker. Fortunately, there was plenty of room, and I was able to bolt it onto the bulkhead

about 20cm from the bottom of the locker. This meant it was going to be out of any water and the electric motor was tucked up high and dry just 25mm below the foredeck. Being able to rotate the electric motor to the desired position was a bonus and made the installation easy. Bolting stainless plates to an alloy surface is not recommended as they react to each other and in the saltwater environment, the resulting corrosion can be really nasty. The other thing is with a 12v supply unless the stainless is 100% insulated from the alloy hull, deck or dash, electrolysis will eat everything away. I used a specially designed Viper alloy fitment kit

which included two heavy duty plastic sandwich plates to go on the bulkhead and insulated spaces. I also used the same for the anchor roller, and while they were also supplied for the switch plates, as my dash is not alloy, I didn’t need them. If yours is then I recommend you fit them. That done it was then merely running the cables from the drum winch motor, to the battery, via the reversing solenoid, breaker and up/down switch. The pre-made kit supplied was way too long for what I required, but it was an easy enough job to cut the cables to length and fit new connectors. As I have a completely open boat, I mounted the solenoid as out of the way as I could so it would get minimal exposure to the saltwater. I also sprayed it with a soft seal spray for extra protection. It was a bitch of a job fitting it where I did, but I think it will be worth it. Running the main cables to the dash was easy, and after mounting both the breaker and up/ down switch into the dual faceplate, the last job was running the cables back to the main battery. I have to admit I cheated here a bit and connected the original capstan winch cables, as rerouting new ones through the confined space under the side and aft deck wasn’t going to be without its problems. Might as well make it easy for myself. With it all wired up, I hooked on the power, and ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16

nothing happened! Me and electrical systems have never been compatible, so I called on my mate Mark Burt who has a knack for all things electrical. It didn’t take him long to see that I had a few wires plugged into the wrong places and once sorted, a flick of the switch and we had a drum roll. Even though most of the wires were pre-numbered - I got those ones right - the ones that weren’t confused me and did take a bit of sorting out….well for me anyway. DECK HARDWARE With the drum winch and all the wiring completed, it was then a matter of looking at the bow area, and the lay of the anchor rode across the foredeck and onto the drum. It’s important to keep this clear of anywhere it can chafe. The first thing to change was the standard bow roller for one of McLay Boat’s swivelling roller setups that allow you to launch and retrieve the anchor automatically. It also fitted the Delta anchor perfectly. Next stage was to mount the Viper anchor roller, which didn’t prove quite as easy. Being unable to get access under the sealed foredeck I had to make up a custom bracket and hang it off the rear of the foredeck, so my warp would run flat and then be in the right position for it to go down through the deck to the drum. Prior to all this I filled the drum with the anchor rode
WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
and attached the anchor, so I could get a more accurate view of the angle of the warp/chain, especially when under tension. Until then everything was going fine, but when I could see the rode was not straight and rubbing on the hawse pipe, I stopped to reevaluate what to do. I tried modifying a rod holder by cutting away all but the base, and while that worked okay, the angle was still too acute. In the end, I stayed with the supplied hawse pipe and modified a new anchor hatch so the rode was reasonably straight and I could still open the hatch if required. Now it all works, and while I still don’t have the rode as straight as I would like it, it works well, and the surface it does rub on is very smooth so there shouldn’t be a problem.
Now I can do all the anchoring from the helm.
The Viper S Series 1000 Micro, was the first with a 316 stainless steel marine gearbox on a drum anchor winch.
THE RESULT Wow, I should have done this year’s ago when I first came across the drum winch concept. They are especially good for a small boat like mine, where space is an issue and fitting a full auto anchor system is not always possible. With the drum winch that has all changed. No longer will you have the problem of a shallow anchor locker and the rode binding up underneath because there is not enough depth. The drum winch takes up less space and your days of having to go forward to clear chain mountains or bind-ups should be gone. I am finding that with the convenience of the drum winch I am using the anchor so much more. It is super easy to drop and retrieve, and I like the fact I don’t have to leave the helm seat to do my anchoring chores. More time for fishing. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

you have a 4200-kgs boat able to travel at speeds of up to 50 knots — and with fuel consumption as low as 1.8L/NM — that is savings on an extremely worthwhile scale. Powering Predict Wind is a pair of Evinrude E-Tec 250hp outboards. These have been fitted with air intake hoses, colloquially known as “snorkels”, designed to funnel fresh, dry and clean air, hopefully almost entirely salt free, from low down in the cockpit, under the transom. According to the company’s business development manager, Nick Olson, the very technical nature of both the catamaran’s foiling design and the E-Tec outboards are an appropriate fit for
HEN FOILING WASZP SAILOR Jon Bilger needed a fast, stable vessel for his internationally-renowned weather forecasting service, PredictWind, it was probably no surprise that he opted for a high-tech foiling catamaran from Auckland’s Bladerunner Boats. PredictWind are mainly using their new Bladerunner to collect and verify weather data, service their observation points around the Hauraki Gulf and for promotional activities. This latter includes transporting, launching and retrieving the two foiling Waszps that Jon and Nick race competitively — which explains the large blue crane that graces the starboard side of the cockpit. The PredictWind 8.5m version is the 96th Bladerunner catamaran to hit the water since the late 1980s and

several more are in the design or construction stages. An early adopter of the CADCAM system, Greg has long modelled his vessels in 3D before putting them through hydrostatic and other similar programs. Every part of the vessel is then sent to be computer cut meaning even quite intricate custom designs can be assembled relatively quickly, efficiently and costeffectively. The designs feature twin deep vee hulls with a fixed foil positioned in the tunnel at the centre of lift (on PredictWind it is about 3.5m forward of the transom). The foil is constructed from aluminium, just like the boat, is supported by a central strut and is an integral part of the structure. Greg explains that, although the positioning of the foil is vital (and takes a lot of very detailed calculations), once that’s done the boat is almost completely unaffected, in terms of speed or fuel efficiency, by the addition or even placement of more load. As the foil’s angle of attack is dependant upon the trim of the boat, the foil is automatically positioned to present its best and most comfortable profile, regardless of whether one is belting into a hard on-the-nose sea (when it keeps the bow down) or sweeping quickly down a following one (when the boat is almost out of the water, with the twin keels providing track-like control). Greg says the way the foil works, the boat can go through the entire speed range (including traversing

the hump) without any adjustment to the engines’ trim. This allows the trim to be used to counter the sea state as normal, but with much greater efficiency. “Because the foil is the trim pivot point, there is a wide range of trim available for different sea conditions,” explains Greg. “In a choppy head sea you put the bow down and the hulls carve through the water with great speed and comfort; the long, deep vee hulls bridging the chop and the foil slicing straight through the waves to give an extremely soft ride. “In a large following sea, it is possible to lift the bow

high, creating huge reserve buoyancy; at the same time, the symmetrical hulls track the boat with no tendency to broach, even in extreme seas.” The design also allows the boat to retain a very low on the plane speed. Sadly, with Auckland’s spring weather reverting to depth-of-winter grisliness, the only suitable day to get on board and get some photos was also a low wind one. Nevertheless, it was pretty obvious that the Bladerunner was performing as desired, giving a very soft ride in all directions and turning tightly with no outward lean or discernable vices.

PRACTICAL LAYOUT Being a custom design, PredictWind has been set up for the data collecting and promotional work for which it is intended. The cockpit is a vast, open and uncluttered affair, which means it would also work very well as either a private or charter fishing boat. A long walk-through platform between the outboards, with access to the water at the end, would also be great for fighting, landing and then getting safely on board any large fish. The wide beam means there is easily enough room for a substantial battery and services’ locker for each engine as well as the hingedown access to the rear platform. Under the hardtop the twin seating modules feature equal height back-to-back seats set high enough to offer good visibility in all directions and all seats come with their own footrests. The extra seat height also creates loads of handy stowage under. As PredictWind will likely be used to shadow extremely high speed America’s Cup yachts in the not-too-distant future, there are also lots of little and not-so-little handrails and grips cleverly positioned
around the place. The cabin is basically for stowage with a wooden floor providing a vast one-level space. It is, however, covered with thick swabs and so is certainly both large and comfortable enough to accommodate a pair of sleeping bodies.

REDICTWIND WAS FOUNDED by 1992 Barcelona 470 Olympian, current world foiling Waszps Masters Champion and renowned America’s Cup weatherman, Jon Bilger. Having had access to what was, at the time, some of the best weather modelling available, he thought how wonderful it would be if that same technology and level of detail was able to be accessed by the world’s sailors, power boaters, ocean-crosses and fishers. Obtaining an exclusive right to some of the most advanced weather modelling technology then available, Jon and his development team also secured the necessary topographical information to offer incredibly specific and detailed weather forecasting at some 20,000 locations around the world. “The technology is the culmination of 30 years of experience by a team of research scientists,” says Jon. “It is cutting edge technology that had not previously been available to the public prior to the release of PredictWind.” Although headquartered in the unassuming Auckland, New Zealand suburb of Te Atatu, PredictWind’s biggest market is in the United States, followed by New Zealand, Australia and Europe. The company also has offices in the US, the UK and Australia. Like many tech companies, PredictWind offers both a free service and a more detailed, paid subscription one. Perhaps unusually for such companies, however, around 50% of their users subscribe to one of their three paid services. All can accessed anywhere in the world through their website or their iOS and Android apps and offer detailed local weather information. The free service offers a daily weather briefing, a variety of different modelling tables and graphs and, perhaps most importantly, accurate local wind maps. The subscription services start with the $US29pa Basic. It has everything in the free service as well as Wave, CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy), Gust, Rain, Cloud and Isobar maps, along with more detailed wind mapping. The $US249 Standard service, often the option of choice among offshore sailors and cruisers, also features detailed Route Mapping and Departure Planning, Sea Temperature maps and both satellite and SSB email delivery. The top-of-the-line Professional service, $US499pa, offers even better resolution, sea and ocean current charts, showing where the stronger currents are, and a number of other advantages for those who spend their professional lives crossing the planet’s oceans.
Both the Standard and Professional services are also available over a satellite connection. At the time of going to print, the company was currently spending quite a lot of its development time on a new PredictFish service, although details of exactly what this will contain and when it will be launched are understandably commercially sensitive. Like much modern technology, PredictWind might be incredibly complicated and hard to understand at a “how it works” level but is exactly the opposite at the far more important “how it is used” one. To illustrate this, Nick demonstrates how to pull up the “shadowing” program on the bulkhead-mounted iPad. Picking a nearby headland, the program shows the headland’s effect on the wind, clearly illustrating (by the use of different shades of colour) exactly where it is casting its wind shadow. While all of us who have sailed, boated or fished close in know about “the lee of the land”, many might be surprised by just how far from the shore this can actually stretch. As someone who prefers fishing close to the land and preferably with no wind or at least the wind and the current going in the same direction, such a feature would be invaluable, especially when combined with a tide or current map. With his racing and business background, Jon is obviously excited about the upcoming America’s Cup in Auckland and the opportunities it presents. Although nothing has been finalised as yet, he is hopeful that, through Emirates Team New Zealand, the event authority and possibly the host broadcaster, PredictWind will end up front and centre of weather forecasting and modelling for the pinnacle event.

HE NEW 700 HT IS BASED OFF THE 650 which came onto the market as a new model a little over 18-months ago. The 700 comes in two configurations, the more highly spec’d HT model, and a more basic Sportfisher. I’ve been lucky enough to test every new model to come off the Lazercraft production line, and I’ve been suitably impressed with all of them. LUXURY FINISH I have always liked the Lazercraft design and build. It combines the best attributes of both GRP and aluminium into one stylish, well finished and great performing boat. As on other Lazercraft models, the 700 HT has a 19-degree aluminium hull, with a fibreglass deck and gunnels. The gunnels and top decks are glued and rivited onto the alloy hull. With the GRP top decks, combined with the carpet and upholstery finish throughout, it’s quite easy to think that you are in a full GRP boat/ It is also one of the quietest alloy boats I’ve ever been on. Forward in the very roomy cabin, you’ll find velour squab upholstery and good sized side shelves for extra storage. Further storage space is located under the vee berth squabs, and a toilet can be fitted as an option. Back at the helm, there is a comfortable bucket seat mounted on a GRP base with storage underneath. Opposite is a similar King/Queen arrangement, with more storage space available underneath. At the helm itself, the Yamaha engine instruments are mounted into the fibreglass dash section as well as a Garmin multi-function display below. tab controls are alongside with a Garmin VHF fitted below. The cockpit is very spacious and has generous painted side shelves running the length of the cockpit. The cockpit floor is carpeted as an option, though there is still access to a sizeable underfloor storage locker which is situated forward between the seats. The carpet is easily removed if you plan on getting out and killing some fish. Beneath you’ll find an easy to wash-down tread plate floor. Four-rod holders adorn the coamings, which are fitted with a non-skid rubber finish, while above a rocket launcher provides storage for a further six rods. Our test boat came fitted with a bait board in the centre of the transom, complete with five-rod holders. A walk through is fitted into the starboard corner where there is a sizeable extendable T-bar boarding ladder. The walkthrough comes complete with a drop-in door to close it off. In the port corner is a sizeable live bait tank, fully plumbed with a viewing window facing into the cockpit. Also, aft is two cavernous storage compartments

underneath the transom that runs right into the far corners of the boat. All of the onboard systems, such as batteries, switches, wash down pump, are housed inside the transom and can be accessed via hatches. UNDERWAY The helm seat is well positioned so that there is adequate room to stand to drive and is easily ventilated via the large sliding windows on each side. The seat itself is also adjustable and can slide forward and back - same for passenger side seat also. Our test boat came fitted with a Yamaha 200hp and has an outboard range of 175hp to 225hp. The 700 HT achieved 40.0 knots at wide-open throttle @ 6100 rpm and was uses 75.7lph. the sweet spot for me was 3500rpm which sees around 23 knots using 21.0lph. The Yamaha 200hp performed well and would be more than adequate for most purposes. If you feel you don’t need that much power, you can opt for the 175hp option, but if you want a bit more of a hot rod on the water, go for the 225hp. Traditionally,

A tidy and well laid out helm area. The helm is well configured and cleanly laid out.
Lazercraft hulls have always liked horsepower and are the kinds of boats that like to be pushed hard - the faster you go, the better they perform, and the 700HT, in this case, was no different. Underneath, the 700HT gets a 5mm alloy hull and runs a series of full-height stringers to the floor, which stiffens the whole boat - eliminating all that banging that traditionally is received with an alloy boat. We experienced some mixed conditions during our test day on Auckland’s harbour. It dealt with the harbour chop with ease and only needed minor adjustments with the trim tabs to keep the hull running true. Stability at rest was superb - we had three onboard, and as we transferred passengers to our camera boat there was very little lean.
SUMMARY The cockpit is spacious and will provide enough room for four anglers to fish in relative comfort and would be an excellent boat for a family to head out for a day’s boating. Our Lazercraft 700HT test boat was priced at $129,995 with packages starting from $119,995 for the more basic Sportfisher version, with a 175hp Yamaha. Easily one of the best-looking hardtop models on the market, and certainly one of the best performing too. Great looks, well appointed, good performer and reasonably priced. The perfect combination of aluminium and fibreglass.

I don’t think we were going to run out of lures.
Barry Thompson spent a day fishing with sliders and was converted to baitless fishing… well almost.
W
HEN Marty Johanson, MD of Composite Developments NZ Ltd asked me to go fishing with him, I didn’t realise quite what I was in for. “No baits,” said Marty, we are going just to use hard lures. Yeah right, I always use pillies and squid and have never been a great fan of jigs. Lures or soft baits. I am still a bit of a traditionalist and when I can keep going out and getting a good feed of snapper each time I am happy to continue the way my old man taught me 60 years ago. Hell, that’s showing my age, but since I was about 6, I have been catching snapper in the Hauraki Gulf. I can remember going out with the old man and catching so many big snappers around the rocks at Tiri, Kawau and Motuora, that anything under about 40cm he used to throw back. We used fresh sprats or piper for bait that we caught off Manly Beach in the net. Berley sometimes constituted stopping

at Wellington Reef and me being sent onto the reef to get a bin full of Kina. Once anchored up my job was to use a hammer and smash the kina and toss them over the side. Worked great and we caught plenty of fish over the years. How times have changed, and now if I get a real big snapper I photograph it and then put it back. Good breeding stock and they don’t taste as good as the 33”- 38” pannies. But I digress. I turned up at Gulf Harbour armed with no more than a mince pie and bottle of water. Seemed strange that I had no fishing tackle. When Marty and his mate Ian arrived with the Okuma Surtees 750 Gamefisher, I knew that I didn’t need to worry. On board were a couple of dozen hard lures to pick from, plus a brace of different rod and reels. Of course, everything was a brand that Composite Developments marketed, but I would have expected nothing less.

Marty had decided we would start with some sliders and see how things went and change to something else if there was no action. Sliders are a bit foreign for me, and although I have one in my tackle box, I have never had much success with it. My trick was put it on a soft bait rod, drop to the bottom, wind back a few turns and leave in the rod holder. Recently I got a good size John Dory, which was a big surprise and I have caught one small snapper, but that’s about it. After spending the day with Marty, I now realise it was all because I wasn’t using it correctly. So when Marty said no baits, no soft baits, just hard jigs and lures I had my doubts. After all what self-respecting fisho goes out without a packet or more of pillies or squid and a berley. That’s me every time, and while I have some hard lures and soft baits, it’s the pillies and squid that seem to do it for me on the sandy area between Kawau and Tiri Tiri Island. But I was happy to try something different, and as I didn’t have to take any fishing gear, I figured Marty would have everything we needed. Well of course he did. As the distributor of Okuma reels and CD rods he had everything covered, right down to the Flambeau tackle boxes, and Savage braid. It was a perfect Friday when we set off to hit the deep water behind Tiri, and after stopping at around 35m, Marty brought out the arsenal. We had three sets of gear, each with a different coloured slider. I was using the new Tesoro 10 reel with the T.C. Tournament Concept 7 foot 6-10 kg rod, Ian had the Komodo 463 baitcaster reel with the infamous 6th generation C.D. Albagraph 5 rod and Marty used a Citrix 364 baitcaster reel on the T.C. (Tournament Concept) medium cast jig 80-150 gm (Acid wrap).
Savage do a full range of slow jigs.

The Okuma Surtees 750 Gamefisher is a great fishing platform.
That’s what it’s all about.
The sliders worked really well in all the colours.
THE RIGHT WAY
Marty explained how to use the sliders to best effect, and this was something new to me. Once the slider hit bottom, we let out some line and then let it run gently across the surface. Every so often there was a little touch, and my first instinct was to strike hard. Not so, said Marty. He explained that imagine the slider/ hook set up was like a piece of wool you pull in front of a kitten. It will play with it while it’s just slowly ahead of it, but jerk it away the kitten loses interest. Same with the snapper! He explained that I had to hold the rod with the drag open and when I felt a seriously good tuck, lock the drag and start winding. None of this raising the rod to the sky. Just slow, gently and always, of course, keeping the tension on. Out deep it was not happening as we drifted for about 30 mins with the drogue out. Although we had only 10 knots of wind, the Surtees 750 Gamefisher was getting pushed along a little too fast not to have the drogue out. With the speed decreased we managed to keep the lures on the bottom. After moving to a few different spots, we headed back into 30m where the action started. It didn’t take long on the drift until Marty hooked up on a decent size snapper. Ian was steadily bringing some pannies aboard, but I was lagging behind. However, things eventually changed, and after throwing back a few undersize ones, I also got into some reasonable size snapper. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16
CLEAN FISHING
One thing I liked was that all the fish - we kept about 14 - were lip hooked and it was easy to remove the hook. I got into the habit of putting the rod back in the rod holder when I removed the hook, tossed the slider back over the side and let off the drag so it would slide to the bottom while I iki spiked the fish and dropped it into the bin. So much nicer than having to rebait every time…and so much cleaner and no smell. Actually, I think I missed the smell of old pillies, but it meant I didn’t have to wash all my clothes when I got home. Also means when you get the boat home it’s just a quick rinse off with a freshwater hose and the jobs done. We had an awesome day, and I have been somewhat converted to sliders. The following week I went up the local Top Catch shop in Whangaparaoa and brought a pink and an orange slider to go with my green one. I also decided to get another Okuma rod and make the new set complete and leave it set up all the time with for the slider. When I wrote this article, I had not been out again to try them, but am looking forward to spending sometime drifting with a couple of sliders doing the work. Still, I will probably also have a few packets of pillies and squid, plus a berley just in case!

BOAT TEST
DNA 730XHT
Multi Tasking Text by Barry Thompson
With the success of the DNA 630 Hardtop and XHT, Jason Elvines has been getting a lot of enquiries for a bigger but similar boat with the ability to provide a lockable cabin. The new 730 XHT is the result.

The DNA 730 XHT is built tough to handle the harshest of conditions.
HEN DESIGNING THE 7.3 XHT, Jason was conscious of not just taking on another metre to the existing hull and a little more beam, it was all about providing a really practical family weekender that had the performance and handling to match. In fact, the first 730 XHT is his own boat, and now with a small family who loves boating, the 730 had to tick all the boxes to suit his family requirements. “I knew that a lot of my customers are like me, love fishing, but also have family boating to consider and so it was important that the 730 XHT covered both markets”, says Jason. Jason added he does a lot of his boating from Nelson - where DNA Boats are based - to Durville Island, so it had to be the ideal boat for those family overnight trips. It needed both comfort and handling and provide a decent workspace for fishing, while not compromising all the amenities needed for family overnighting. Jason has indeed achieved that in the 730 XHT, something that wasn’t as practical in the smaller 630 XHT. “I actually started the design from scratch, as I couldn’t just lengthen the existing 630 hull as I needed the extra beam, a little more deadrise and a slightly slender pontoon shape, so the hull is all new”, says Jason.

Amazing what you can do with well placed lights and cool graphics.

DNA 730XHT
The custom made DNA bait stations are something special.
The dash is big enough to take most electronics you would fit a boat this size.
The galley is concealed under the starboard seat.
The 730 XHT is a metre longer, it carries 200mm more beam both internally and externally and the hull, while still based on the same well proven X-Series design is 21 deg at the transom compared to 20 deg for the 630 XHT. Plus it is a lot heavier with a dry hull weight of 1800 kgs, around twice that of the 630 XHT. This also puts the towing weight up to about 2850 kgs. The boat is built tough with 6mm hull thickness with 3 & 4mm tubes and with the pontoons moved further out the entire hull structure had to be redesigned. The integral hull framing system using CNC cut interlocking full depth full-length frames creates a rigid dependable system. There are now extra longitudinal bearers, and the cockpit sole has been raised 60mm and is now welded to the pontoons and not the hull. This means the pontoons are subsurface and the flat floor now goes right out to the edge, without any angles. Raising the level also meant the fuel tankage could be increased to 300 litres, something that was also a requirement for the extended trips away into areas where fuel was not so readily obtainable. Pontoons are divided into individual airtight chambers as well as sealed tread plate floors, all of which are pressure tested to 5psi, creating a virtually unsinkable boat. Another plus was a much larger underfloor wet locker, which can be sacrificed if you want to go for the extra long range 500-litre fuel tank. The rest of the underfloor space is sealed air buoyancy and covered with a multi-pattern black Seadek flooring accented with orange patterns and the DNA logo. Looks good and is also very practical and easy to clean. The cockpit footprint is a lot larger not only the surface area but also the coaming heights which allow ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #16

for two trays either side, as opposed to the 630 XHT with one. Across the transom, there are three hatches concealing access to some of fuel and pump systems, Optima battery bank and extra storage. To port is a wide walk-through with a live bait tank in the step. Being an alloy boat, you can configure the transom in many different ways. Centre stage on Jason’s boat is a large bait station complete with tackle draw, with night light and he has also added the full cage, with a drop-down ladder around the boarding platform. Hella lights floodlight the cockpit as well as provide mood lighting. Great security when you have anyone fishing aft of the transom. However, there is plenty of space in the cockpit to handle four anglers without getting in each other’s way. If you add the camper pack option, you can close off the cockpit with a canopy and side curtains and make good use of the space for extra accommodation. CLOSED OFF Perhaps the most significant difference between the 630 and 730, apart from the size, is the lockable rear bulkhead. This was not really practical on the 630 as it made the wheelhouse area too short and cramped. The bulkhead isn’t structural, so it’s optional as to whether you have it or not. What it does, however, it makes the wheelhouse a very cosy and warm space, ideal if you are overnighting. Close the rear door and

cavity slide window, and you have a very quiet area when underway. To port under the double passenger seat, is a small but very useable and practical galley with long storage drawers beneath. Cooking odours are expelled through the rear window, plus sliding side windows offer plenty of fresh air through the wheelhouse. Opposite, the single swivelling Hi-Tech Elite helm seat on the Softrider pedestal base provides a comfortable driving position, with the option of a fold away bolster if you want to drive standing. The dash is big enough to take most electronics you would fit a boat this size. Jason had chosen a Simrad 16 EVO3 MFD, Garmin DMI 120, Simrad autopilot and controls for the Maxwell RC6 anchor winch. Overhead is the Fusion RA70 touchscreen sound system and Simrad RS35 VHF. Jason points out that the interior layout was what suited him and his family, so this area is very much a custom design. A storage void under the floor is ideally suited for a portable chiller. The accommodation packages are very much restricted to a couple of single squabs with infill to make a large double, plus you can fit pipe berths either side for smaller children. A head is installed below the centre squab, with storage under the berths. A privacy curtain is another good option to consider.

SINGLE OR TWIN While the 630 was very much a single engine boat, the 730 can be set up with single or twin outboards as well as inboard sterndrive or jet. Max power is rated at 300hp, with a minimum of 230hp. Our power was a single Honda 250 VTEC, which topped out at 5800 rpm @ 36.5 knots and 83.4 lph. Jason says that when he runs down the coast to Durville Island he likes to sit around 4000 rpm @ 24.5 knots and the fuel consumption drops to a very reasonable 30 lph. That gives a range of roughly 200nm, so that’s plenty for a return trip to the top of Durville Island where the best fishing is. When I went down to Nelson to run the boat, the sea conditions were reasonably calm. This was the complete reverse of my last visit when I ran the smaller 630 HT. I remember then how impressed I was with the ride and handling of the boat and the 730 is that and more. Being a lot heavier it really sits on the water and feels surefooted and steady.
SUMMARY You can’t fault the workmanship of the DNA 730, or any of the company’s many models and the handling and performance is exceptional. Adding another 7m pontoon boat to the market is a big call by any manufacturer and the competitions tough, but Jason and his team at DNA have certainly gone that extra step to ensure that the boat they produce is as perfect as they can get it. Being CAD designed and CNC profile cut, the 730 XHT is built to fine tolerances and is perfectly symmetrical. DNA Boats may not be one of the bigger players in the alloy boat market, but they certainly know how to build prestige boats. The 730 XHT is an excellent boat for the Marlborough Sounds and surrounding areas, for both fishing, weekending or as transport to the holiday home. Jason has plans to have the boat on display at the 2019 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show to expose it to the Auckland market. It has proven it is ideal for the Sounds, and I see no reason why it wouldn’t be a perfect option for the Hauraki Gulf.

2-strokes aren’t anywhere near twice as powerful? A simplified answer is that the old engineering adage that ‘there is no free lunch’ applies. A 4-stroke’s power stroke goes all the way down the piston’s travel – i.e., its stroke. In contrast, a 2-stroke’s power stroke comes to an end when the piston uncovers the exhaust port, letting the exhaust gases escape. The scavenging of the exhaust gases is assisted by the fresh compressed air flowing from the crankcase through the transfer port and into the cylinder. In physics and engineering, work is defined as force multiplied by distance. After ignition by the spark plug, the burning gases in the combustion chamber exert a force on the piston, diminishing as the piston travels down the cylinder, and the average force on the piston multiplied by the distance the piston moves with that force acting on it equates to the work done. Power is defined as the rate of doing work, so at equal engine speed, the position of a 2-stroke’s exhaust port along the stroke limits the 2-stroke’s power output to become much the same as a 4-stroke’s, albeit with a flatter torque curve. The biggest ‘pros’ for carburetted 2-strokes were their low cost, light weight, mechanical simplicity and high low-down torque (grunt) to give good holeshot. Their biggest ‘cons’ were their high fuel consumption and loud noise. The only way to beat carburetted 2-strokes’ biggest ‘con’ was to eliminate the carburettor and somehow inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber, so that the fuel spray plume could not reach the exhaust port before the piston closed it. In contrast, the biggest ‘pros’ for 4-strokes are their
ROM THEIR BEGINNING IN THE EARLY 20TH century – the first commercially viable one having been manufactured by Ole Evinrude – outboard motors were simple carburetted 2-strokes. The description “two strokes” was given because a complete air/fuel induction and combustion cycle took two strokes of the piston – one towards the combustion chamber and one away from it. Until 1997, there were no regulations on outboards’ exhaust emissions, and hence practically no incentive to reduce the exhaust emissions of 2-strokes, which compared with the 4-stroke engines used in motor cars, were extremely high. This was because when the piston uncovered the transfer port opening into the cylinder, allowing the fuel/air mix to travel from the crankcase along the transfer port and into the combustion chamber, the exhaust port was also open. Consequently, depending on the engine speed, up to 45% of the fuel went straight out the exhaust port, unburnt. In contrast, 4-strokes, have one firing stroke every two revolutions (four strokes of one of the pistons), and the 4-stroke cycle is summed up by the expression “suck, squeeze, bang, blow”, meaning “induction, compression, fuel burning (the power stroke), exhaust”. To achieve this, 4-strokes need to have poppet valves in the form of intake valves and exhaust valves – hence more mechanical complexity and manufacturing cost in the form of mechanisms for opening and closing each valve at just the right time. So, given that 2-strokes have twice as many power strokes as 4-strokes, why is it that size for size,

smooth running, no-smoke exhaust, quietness, and their fuel economy. Their ‘cons’ compared with 2-strokes are their high cost, high weight, mechanical complexity, high maintenance and lack of low-down grunt to get up on the plane and/or tow waterskiers. In 1998, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) served notice that by 2006 marine pleasureboat engines would have to meet strict new air pollution regulations. This caused carburetted 2-strokes
to be phased out in the US. All 2-stroke outboard manufacturers selling in the US introduced 4-stroke outboards. Simultaneously, the race was on to develop direct-injected 2-strokes that would meet or exceed the new emissions standards. Fortunately, the development of digital electronics made direct injection possible. Three of the major outboard companies independently developed different technologies to allow them to develop 2-strokes that complied with the forthcoming

TASMAN regulations. Yamaha developed what it called “High Pressure Direct Injection” (HPDI). First Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), then the manufacturer of Johnson and Evinrude outboards, followed by Mercury, bought licences from a Perth, West Australia, company called Orbital Technologies. OMC also bought a licence to use and develop direct injection technology from a German engineering company called Ficht. Mercury also bought a licence from Orbital Technologies and developed Orbital’s technology to produce its OptiMax range of direct-injected 2-stroke outboards. Orbital’s technology combined a fuel spray from a fuel injector with a blast of compressed air fired across the path of the fuel spray, necessitating a small air compressor mounted on the engine. While doing its R&D on Ficht and Orbital technology, OMC’s engineers discovered that Ficht fuel injectors could easily supply fuel for their outboard engines from 25hp to 300hp and more, so they never built production outboards with Orbital technology. OMC’s senior management committed some classic blunders in outsourcing some of its manufacturing that had previously been carried out in-house. Quality control did not receive sufficient emphasis, with the inevitable result that the good reputation of OMC’s Evinrude and Johnson brands suffered considerable damage. Unable to secure the funding it needed, eventually, in 2000, OMC paid the ultimate price and filed for corporate bankruptcy. OMC’s assets, including its Ficht technology, were eventually bought by Canadian company BRP for mere cents on the dollar. BRP soon made the decision to ditch the Johnson brand and resurrect Evinrude only. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

BRP set about re-engineering Ficht direct-injection technology, re-branding it as E-TEC. The re-engineering improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, oil usage, noise levels, and maintenance needs. The reduction in oil usage was due in part to a pin-point oiling system which sprays oil only on the necessary components, unlike the original carburetted two stroke motors, which required oil to be mixed with the fuel. In 2004, Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine technology to win the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Excellence Award, which recognizes low emission levels. Each Evinrude E-TEC fuel injector is supplied with fuel from a diaphragm fuel pump at 240 kPa (35 psi). There is one fuel injector for each cylinder. There are therefore no highpressure fuel lines as found on common-rail diesel engines. The E-TEC fuel injector uses the piezzo-electric effect (in the same way as does a hi-fi speaker) to move a plunger to force fuel at very high pressure through an atomising nozzle directly into the combustion chamber, milliseconds before the piston closes off the exhaust port, so that the exhaust port is closed off just before the fuel spray plume reaches it, ensuring that no unburnt fuel is lost out the exhaust port. Thus, direct fuel injection has eliminated both of the major bugbears of carburetted 2-strokes – poor fuel consumption and gross pollution – whilst enhancing their greatest advantage, low-down torque for superior acceleration. It is noteworthy that the current E-TEC injector is capable of suppling enough fuel to produce almost 100hp per cylinder & operate a 2-stroke engine in excess of 13,000 rpm. This tells me that an E-TEC 7 litre V8 producing 600hp could be designed simply by increasing the bore and stroke by only 15%, whilst using the same current E-TEC fuel injectors. Leaving the bore and stroke the same and adding two cylinders on top of the current V6 would make a 4.59 litre V8 producing 400hp. Just remember that you read it here first! The fuel metering accuracy of an E-TEC injector is such that when a V6 E-TEC is idling at 500 rpm it consumes approximately 0.9 litres of petrol per hour. This equates to each cylinder receiving from its own individual injector a miniscule 0.005 mL per firing, i.e. 5 millionths of a litre! Every E-TECS’s engine management module (EMM) fires the spark plug repeatedly, beginning before the fuel arrives at the spark plug and lasting throughout the combustion event. The multiple sparks ensure that the fuel ignites during every cycle, making an E-TEC much more smooth-running than a 4-stroke, because an E-TEC has twice as many power strokes per revolution as a 4-stroke with the same number of cylinders. When BRP released the E-TEC at the 2003 Miami Boat Show, some Yamaha engineers came on the BRP stand and confessed that they could not build a range of HPDI 2-strokes that would meet the CARB 3-Star emissions regulations. Those same Yamaha engineers were seen at the 2017 Miami Boat Show water testing a boat powered by an E-TEC G2. Recently, Mercury ceased production of OptiMax directinjected 2-strokes, and Yamaha ceased production of its HPDI 2-strokes. Both companies are now focussed on 4-strokes, except for some portable carburetted 2-strokes for some export markets where emissions regulations are non-existent. That leaves BRP Evinrude as the sole major manufacturer of direct-injected 2-strokes. Tohatsu, which

also bought a licence from Orbital Technologies, still markets a 115hp TLDI compressed-air-assisted direct-injected outboard. However, Tohatsu has a relatively small, but very customer loyal share of the New Zealand outboards market. Stratified charge combustion is a technology where a reduced amount of fuel is direct-injected close to the spark plug in such a way that the flame front does not spread throughout the combustion chamber – hence the term ‘stratified combustion’. E-TEC G2 engines run with stratified combustion from idle up to about 2000 rpm, depending on load. Suzuki claims to have achieved a similar effect with its 4-strokes, calling it ‘lean burn’ technology, but as yet Suzuki does not make direct-injected 4-strokes. Several models of Suzuki outboards incorporate Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to vary intake timing with the camshaft to optimize timing for low to mid-range operation. This allows the engine to deliver greater low to mid-range torque, which improves acceleration. Honda VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control) is a camshaft system which Honda claims improves the volumetric efficiency of a 4-stroke engine, resulting in higher performance at high RPM, and lower fuel consumption at low RPM. Mercury’s new 4-stroke family is built on two new blocks – a 3.4 litre V6 and a 4.6 litre V8. As it did with its 3.0 litre in-line 4-cylinder 150hp engine, Mercury has followed the old adage that “there is no substitute for cubes” and the high-displacement powerheads of these new V6 engines provide improved torque at low and midrange rpm. They also have double overhead camshafts – which in V engines are known as quad cams, whereas the 3 litre 150hp engine has a single overhead camshaft (SOC).

Mercury claims that each member of this new family of V6 engines has improved low-down torque and fuel economy due to their quad-cam design and Transient Spark Technology (TST), which controls the spark and fuel injection rate. Along with TST, each of Mercury’s new V6 engines also features Advanced Range Optimization (ARO) which further improves fuel economy. ARO backs off the fuel being put into the engine only when its EMM calculates that this can be done without affecting any other characteristic of the engine. Mercury’s new range of V6 engines also features Adaptive Speed Control, which automatically maintains the driver’s desired rpm regardless of load or condition including turning corners and running in a seaway. Way back in early 1996 my wife and I hosted a Japanese professional engineer/patent attorney, Masahisa Takahashi, and his son for a week while my wife gave an intensive course in English language to his son, then 15 years old. Masahisa told me that he had filed over 120 patents on gasoline direct injection for his client Mitsubishi Motors, and we discussed at length the technical details. Later that year, the first Mitsubishi cars with gasoline direct injection (GDI) came to market in Japan. Since then, practically all other car manufacturers have introduced cars with direct injection petrol engines. With the introduction of its all-new 5.6 litre V8, 425hp direct fuel injection engine, Yamaha has taken 4-stroke outboard technology to a new level. Direct injection allows use of a higher compression ratio, in this case 12.2:1, whilst still running on regular petrol. The new V8 has an extremely hard plasma-fused coating on the cylinder bores – the same proven

E-TECs run with virtually no smoke, as their lubricating oil is ashless and so little of it is used. Thus, direct fuel injection has eliminated both the first and the second biggest bugbear of 2-strokes – giving them excellent fuel economy and making them the least polluting. Also, direct injected 2-strokes run just as smoothly as 4-strokes, with no coughing and spluttering as did carburetted 2-strokes. In fact, an E-TEC V6 will idle ‘all day’ at 450rpm without missing a beat, with no visible smoke.
technology as used on the 4.2-litre V6, obviating the need for cylinder liners and lowering weight. Given that direct fuel injection is now commonplace in petrol engines in cars, we can expect it to become commonplace in 4-stroke outboards in the future – more likely sooner rather than later.
SO, WHICH IS BEST – 4-STROKE OR DIRECTINJECTED 2-STROKE? The answer is – it depends on what features you value the most. And, as always, your relationship with your dealer is of great importance. Before making your decision, talk with some owners, study the published performance data, and if you’re lucky enough, go for some test rides. One thing is for sure – competition, with a nudge along from the US EPA, combined with brilliant engineers in both design and manufacturing, has seen outboard motor technology – both in directinjected 2-stroke and in 4-stroke – leap ahead. Today’s outboards, whether 4-stroke or direct-injected 2-stroke, are superb pieces of precision engineering, far superior to what we had in the mid-1940s when I had my first outboard boating experiences; indeed, far superior to what we had just ten years ago. Properly maintained, any of today’s 4-stroke or direct-injected 2-stroke outboards will provide years of enjoyment on the water. Just make sure that when you buy one, you get the one that’s best for you!
LUBRICATION Critics of Evinrude E-TECs often claim that because they have a total-loss lubrication system, the cost of the oil to lubricate them is way more than the cost of the oil for a 4-stroke of the same power. However, in a comparative test of a 1296 cc Evinrude E-TEC 90hp outboard and a 4-cylinder DOHC 1596 cc 4-stroke outboard over 300 hours, the E-TEC burned 19.2 litres of oil and the 4-stroke used 25.6 litres, which is 33% more. All E-TEC s have their lubricating oil injected directly into the engine, targeting specific components, at a flow rate determined by the EMM according to engine speed and load. The 90hp 4-stroke has a sump holding 4.5 litres. The 90hp E-TEC has a 2-litre oil tank under the cowl, good for about 30 hours of normal operation. All E-TECS have their oil tanks under the cowl, and G2 V6s also have an oil reservoir under the cowl to feed the lower unit gears. 4-strokes need to have their sump oil changed every 100 hours, or once a year, whichever comes first. Moderate to high use for the average boater’s outboard is about 50 hours a year. The oil for a 4-stroke needs to be topped up occasionally, as every 4-stroke engine consumes some oil; the synthetic oil for the E-TEC costs more than 4-stroke oil, so – surprise, surprise – the overall cost of oil for each engine is much the same.
