IS THIS THE PERFECT BAIT? JOHN BAANDERS THE INVENTOR OF ECOBAITS WENT FISHING WITH EDITOR BARRY THOMPSON TO TRY AND CONVINCE HIM THAT HIS REVOLUTIONARY ECO-FRIENDLY ECOBAIT WOULD MEAN BARRY WOULD NEVER HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER PILLIE, SQUID OR MULLET. WAS HE SUCCESSFUL?

I

had rung Barry about using my Ecobaits during lockdown so it took sometime before we actually got together. It so happened he had a new Aqualine home for the weekend and was looking for a fishing mate. Perfect and so was the weather. But could I convince this hard nosed bait user to change? We launched the boat at Manly and about 5min out from the beach Barry stops and say that this is often a good spot. I set up the bait and Barry drops a berley I’d made over the side. I show him the bait and help him attach it to his hook. “Shit,” he says, “that’s a tiny bait. I usually use at least a half or full pilly” . I reply, “wait and see you might be surprised. You don’t always need a big bait to catch a good fish”. I begin to sort out my bait and Barry drops his bait over the side. “Shit, I’m on, can’t believe it.” I wait to see what he gets and up comes a lovely pannie. We forgot the net and measuring tape, being a new boat, but the snapper was well over 30cm. Dealt to and in the bin I cut him another bait. We both drop our lines down together this time and Barry goes “I’m on again. This Ecobait really does work. I thought the first might have been a fluke”. He hauls and I get a strike. Barry gets his keeper, two in the bin, mine is not legal. Fifteen minutes later no more bites so Barry suggests we head out a bit into deeper water. Water is like a mill pond and we blast out. Chelsea, a beautiful old English Springer Spaniel was very settled in the boat. Next stop 25m mark. Drift with lines over the side with berley. Straight onto the fish again. Barry also tested the Ecobait >

John Baanders waiting for his bait to work…. and it did.

You only need a very small piece on each hook.

THE PERFECT BAIT CONTINUED We also had some fish attractant to wipe on the Ecobait, but was it really required as the bait worked perfectly well without it.

Like the Ecobait (left), the soft bait comes in sheets and you cut off what you need.

Softbait for a short while and got plenty of hits but no fish. He was fishing with two rods and blamed it on that. An hour later our tally is 15 snapper, 8 keepers (Barry let a good sized one slip off the bait board). We had fished maybe a total of an hour and a half but the fishing had slowed down and we put that down to the berley bomb having been depleted. Also the wind had got up quite strongly so we headed to sheltered water so Barry could take some photos. The entire time we fished we used less than half a kilo of bait. Not bad for two fishermen and a dog. It was a perfect afternoon and yes I think I did convince Barry that he didn’t need to buy any more pillies, squid or mullet again. We shall see!

biodegradable, and is more durable on a hook and not a one bite wonder. It contains strong attractants that fish love, is very easy to use, not messy and does not require freezing unless kept for long periods of time, then we recommend well sealed freezing to stop moisture loss. Ecobait can be returned to the fridge or freezer after use and does not lose it’s integrity, unlike most baits, to be used again, so no waste. Ecobait is a sustainable bait that does not contain any bait fish or fish ingredients and therefore has no impact on fish populations nor bait imported from overseas. Bait fish are under constant stress from over fishing as are most fisheries. The preservation of all fisheries and fish stock is imperative and sustainability is paramount world wide if we want to feed and enjoy fishing for generations to come. Two kilos of pilchard which provides approximately 80 baits retail for about $20. Ecobaits will be about $20-$22 for the same quantity, 80 baits, but will only weigh about half a kilo. Eighty baits is the important factor not volume size. Ecobait Softbait are made from basically the same gelatin as the bait and are totally eco-friendly containing no plasticides or any toxic material. Ecobait Softbait is fully digestible by fish and contain a lovely crab flavour. Ecobait Softbait will be about $10 for about 10 soft baits. Ecobaits and Ecobaits Softbait will go on the market before Christmas. If you’d like to see Ecobaits in action and how to use effectively go to YouTube: ‘Hooked on Hauraki – Ecobaits’. When out fishing the perfect scenario is, as Barry and I did, used a muscle and mackeral berley and no other bait. Currently the website is under construction and will be operational approximately mid January 2021. In the mean time orders for bait and soft bait can be made prior to Christmas via email. Orders will be taken again after 17th January 2021. Finally Ecobaits Ltd and all it's IP is on the market for sale to an investor who can foresee it's massive potential for the sustainability of bait fish world wide. Ecobaits motto is Leaving bait fish for big fish.

What Are Ecobaits?

Ecobaits is an entirely new concept in fishing. Yes, it’s man made and others have tried but none have succeeded with any degree of success. Ecobaits are different, but very successful. A new way of thinking is required to get the best from it. Forget the old bait concepts you have about bait. For a start from a kilo of say pilchard bait, at best, you might get 40 baits. From a kilo of Ecobait you are likely to get up to 200 baits or more. To get 40 baits from Ecobaits you only require a quarter of a kilo. The old saying of big baits get big fish is not necessarily correct, it’s only the smaller fish can’t get it in their gob and will hack it to bits. Big fish eat small baits as well. In fact we recommend you use a bait the size of a $2 coin if not smaller. We also recommend using a long line hook with not too much drag on the reel, about half drag is good, so the fish will get mouth hooked before running any distance and not gut hooked. Ecobaits are made from a purpose made gelatin type ingredient specifically for Ecobaits, developed in Europe and containing many disguise elements to stop imitation, but it does have one drawback, it’s heat sensitive. Any temperature over 40 deg is likely to cause the gel to soften and eventually melt. So it’s best left out of direct sunlight for long periods of time and preferably kept in a chilli bin or in the shade to retain its integrity. The bait is totally eco friendly, contains no toxic chemicals and entirely made from natural materials, 100% ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #21

BOAT TEST

SEALEGS 6.1M ALLOY

The new Sealegs 6.1m Alloy.

The 6.1m Alloy model is designed and built to be a more affordable everyday boat for boaties.

Over 1500 boats down, Sealegs have certainly proved the doubters wrong and become a significant force on the global boating market. In fact Sealegs #1500 just went to Bear Grylls – the Global Adventure Icon – and was his third Sealegs. With various models always on the drawing board and in development, their newest offering to the market is the 6.1m Alloy. An amphibious boat has never been the cheapest item on the market, and Sealegs are in no denial about that. They cater to a specific and discerning buyer. There wants and needs vary, but what they commonly want is an easy and convenient alternative to trailer boating. No trailers, no waiting in queues at the ramp and in some cases tides do not restrict you for beach launching. What Sealegs have done with this new 6.1m Alloy model, is create a more basic boat, with less of the frills and features, but still with the functionality of a Sealegs, and with a more affordable price tag. “We want to make a Sealegs more affordable, and to appeal to a wider range of buyers,” says Global

132

Sales & Marketing Manager Peter Small. “We think for $NZ149,500 for a Sealegs base boat and outboard is incredible. Electronics is on top of that, but it gets people out on the water in a new Sealegs.” “In the design and build of this boat, it’s about being smart in our manufacturing costs, and passing those savings onto the consumer.” So where have Sealegs saved some costs in the build of this new 6.1m Alloy. All Wheel Drive is not standard, this is an option on the 6.1m Alloy (it is standard on the rest of the range but the relatively lighter 6.1m and shorter wheel base doesn’t make it necessary for all boats (particularly those on concrete ramps or hard packed sand). It does come standard with an Automatic Braking System (ABS). The ABS is a land-based mechanical brake within the rear-drive motors which automatically activates when: the boat is parked, and the inboard motor is turned off OR in the unlikely event of a hydraulic transmission failure or if the operator activates the emergency stop button on the console. Power Steering is also not standard – this is an option on the 6.1m that again Sealegs fit as standard to their larger, heavier craft for more seamless manoeuvring on land. If you want to tackle some serious terrain, then there is a diff-lock available as an option to augment the functionality of AWD. The diff-lock option allows operators to force all wheels to turn in unison, regardless of traction (or lack thereof) available to all wheels. This, combined with AWD, will allow a Sealegs boat to overcome more extreme conditions. Saving some costs off the retail price in the case of the 6.1m Alloy is the lack of XRT (Extended Run

Time). In standard spec, the 6.1m Alloy can travel on land for 1km, which for most people is all that is needed. XRT adds the ability to run on land for much more extended periods. If you want to drive longer distances in your 6.1m Alloy, you can add XRT as an option.

FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT

As you step aboard the 6.1m Alloy, you immediately notice how spacious the boat is. For a boat that is only 6.79m in length overall (wheels up), it feels like a much bigger craft. The hull length (not including wheels) is 5.2m, and the beam is 2.31m. The 19-deg deadrise hull is made from 4mm aluminium and will give a total displacement weight of 1420kg without fuel. Standing in the aft section of the cockpit, there is easy access into both corners should you be playing a fish, and scuppers will ensure any water that comes over the side drains out quickly. The icey bin seen in the starboard corner is an option and slides under the transom. Sealegs plan on upgrading this to another version which allows you to open it from one end when stowed. Across the transom, there is a central storage locker with a live bait tank in the port corner, which can be accessed via a hatch above. The 6.1m Alloy is rated for six passengers, and you can fish 3-4 comfortably. With the addition of the Sealegs system, it adds a significant amount of weight to the boat, down low. Which, in turn, makes it ultra-

stable. Two adults to one side and there was very little sign of lean. There is side shelf storage on both sides of the cockpit, and the top of the coamings come equipped with threerod holders on each side as well as two cup holders. There are a further five-rod holders in the centre of the cockpit and a whopping additional four drink holders a top of the engine box. The 22hp Honda four-stroke engine that powers the Sealegs hydraulics system sits underneath the helm seat, this provides extra passenger seating and frees up the helm seat console for storage. The helm seat itself features a fold-back bolster, meaning you can push it forward should you want to drive standing, or so you can sit and face aft while at rest fishing or socialising with your passengers. At the helm, there are twin folding bolster seats, in front of a wide dash area. Finished in aluminium, the dash area is

vast and expansive. Sitting in the centre above the steering wheel is a 12” Simrad MFD. To the left are various switches for the onboard system as well as the Yamaha digital engine gauges. To the right are the controls for the Sealegs system as well as engine control for the Yamaha outboard. There is a small cuddy cabin forward, big enough to stow a bit of gear, and on the foredeck is a drum anchor winch to take care of anchoring duties.

BOAT TEST

SEALEGS 6.1M ALLOY

The ride was good, and dry, it handled the cross chop well, and was a good match to the 130hp fourstroke. It would also easily handle a large 150hp version.

SMOOTH RUNNING

While an underfloor fuel tank can be fitted as an option, our test boat came with the standard tote tank configuration. Under the floor, there is space large enough to house two 45-litre tote tanks, couple that with the economy of the 130hp Yamaha four-stroke and it will give the boat plenty of economical cruising. The boat comes standard with one 45-litre tote; another comes as an option. Sealegs have gone with the tote tank concept as a cost-cutting measure, as it’s easier to buy and off the shelf item rather than fabricating a fitted tank inhouse – which they do for the rest of the

WIDE APPEAL

Boat & outboard packages start from $149,500. Our test boat, the first boat off the production line, and loaded up with a few extra options, is retailing for $195,000. Who is the 6.1m Alloy going to appeal to? It’s going to find appeal with fishermen, with the boat ideally set-up for coastal fishing and even further afield should they wish. It will also find favour with older generations who perhaps want an easier way of getting out on the water, without having to sacrifice comfort by getting a small boat. And according to Sealegs, the boat is already finding appeal; this demonstrator is hull #1 with a further five already ordered and going into production – clearly set to be another winner for this innovative Kiwi builder.

Sealegs range. The 6.1 Alloy is rated for outboards from 130hp to 150hp, our test boat fitted with Yamaha’s 130hp four-stroke variant. The performance was good, a healthy 31 knots @ 5800rpm from the 130hp Yamaha with two passengers on board. At a comfortable cruise, we observed 22 knots at 4500rpm. While underway, you are well protected via the wraparound windscreen, the seating position allowing you to sit low enough below the top edge of the screen. Should you wish, a bimini or a T-Top is available as an option.

FLYFISHING FOR

KINGS Catching kingfish in less than a meter of water on a fly is something that will give any fisherman a buzz. Tauranga based King Tide Salt Fly's Lucas Allen tells us.

L

ucas Allen is the man behind King Tide Salt Fly, a specialist saltwater fly fishing outfit based in Tauranga, New Zealand. Often searching for kingfish in less than a meter of water armed with only a fly rod and a set of eagle eyes he has finely tuned his approach to catching one of New Zealand’s most prized sportfish. While this can be done on foot, wading the shallow harbour flats it is his boat that really shines and provides the ideal platform to accommodate anglers. The huge casting platform forward of the console is the jewel in the crown and allows his anglers a massive uncluttered space to throw flies at anything that happens to swim their way. Working closely with the Ross and Max Christensen from FC Boats his dream fly fishing boat evolved quickly, removing anything that wasn’t required and adding a multitude of personal touches, all for the benefit of both his clients and his own enjoyment. The basic FC535cc package was the starting point and that’s when the fun began.

KINGS

FLYFISHING FOR

A well stacked centre console has easy walkaround

Adhering to stringent survey rules during the build things came together quickly with all the due ticks and crosses checked. Lucas’s previous FC 430 had an impressive stability report and this time around the stability test came through exceedingly well again, with a 15 deg heel allowance the 535CC breezed through at around 8 deg. This is especially important to provide a stable platform while casting from the front deck. The size of boat was a very important consideration to make; too big and the shallow water he hunts kingfish in would be inaccessible, too small and there would never be the chance to chase fish around the plentiful inshore reefs and bays. THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT During this time Lucas was also involved with BLA who distribute marine equipment to Australia and New Zealand. In this role Lucas trained BLA dealers and customers on all things Minn Kota and Humminbird. It made perfect sense to utilize these tools again for his next set up as Lucas had added the LINK system to his previous boat and was blown away with its functionality. The One Boat Network allows multiple commands to be undertaken from one of the Humminbird Solix 12s

The detail and clarity from Humminbirds Mega+ image quality provides a massive insight into what’s going on underwater. The irony wasn’t lost on a guide who mostly spots fish using his eyes in the shallows when it comes to using a sounder in deeper water, infact Lucas swears by his sounders and utilizes his time wisely to provide clients the best possible shot at a fish. A Minn Kota gives a massive edge when quietly stalking the shallows, any disturbance or curiosity is easily advanced on with a few pushes of a button. As King Tide is operated by the Minn Kota for a large portion of the guiding day Lucas upscaled his battery bank and runs a 24v system with 130A Mastervolt AGM batteries. There are so many features to benefit from by having a Minn Kota, the spot lock GPS anchoring is a big drawcard but some of the lesser known functions have a firm place in Lucas’s operation. Auto pilot will set a course and keep you on a heading, cruise control allows boat speed to be kept constant, you can record tracks - even creating an offset to parallel your saved track, a simple “go to” button gets you right on top of fish sign and waypoints. Finally Humminbirds Autochart Live will draw the seafloor and talk to the Minn Kota, perfect for cruising set contours and swimming lures and baits in prime real estate for longer with more ease. Something a little more unique that often has a lot of questions thrown it’s way is the Minn Kota Raptor, while relatively uncommon in New Zealand it has earned its place on the boat very quickly. In a nutshell it’s basically a handbrake for the boat, a hydraulic ram actuates a boom which drives a composite shaft down to the seabed, effectively pinning King Tide to the spot. BOAT TEST

DNA 590 XHT

CONTINUING THE PASSION TEXT BY BARRY THOMPSON

The 590xht is the third addition to the DNA Hardtop XHT Fleet and carries on the same high standards of it's sisters. The DNA 590 XHT is the ninth model from this Nelsonbased builder that I have reviewed, and as in the past, I was impressed with what I saw. Jason Elvines and his team at DNA Boats have a reputation for producing some really smart boats, and while the bulk of the sales are still into the South Island, the brand is starting to make its name noticed in the north. To help further that exposure, Oceantime Marine, based at Gulf Harbour has been appointed the first DNA Auckland dealer. Despite Covid-19 and lockdowns, Jason says that 2020 was a ALLOY ALLOYBOAT BOAT2020 2021ISSUE ISSUE#20 #21

super busy year and he is booked out months ahead on most models, especially the larger hardtops. In the previous Alloy Boat Magazine, I reviewed the all-new 801 Custom, a highly appointed 8.1m hardtop that makes a statement about the company’s ability and craftsmanship. While the 590 XHT is not so luxuriously appointed, the fit and finish are to the same high standard. Jason says that an owner can just about have anything they want, and he is happy to customise the boat to suit.

smaller 570 XHT it is also the same layout. In the standard boat, there are no forward squabs, with a rear upstand to stop any dry gear making its way into the cockpit. The owner decided on the customary twin vee berth arrangement with an optional infill. There are storage shelves either side and also under the squabs. Jason says they have also lowered the cabin sole 60mm to provide extra seated headroom inside.

The owner of our 590 XHT, Sounds Viking, was looking for a serious fishing boat that was well appointed and came with some overnighting capabilities. While currently set up as more of a day boat, it wouldn’t take much to add a few extras such as head, cooker and freshwater shower. DNA’s 590 XHT hardtop is a clone of the 570 XHT with the same size cabin and hardtop but is 200mm longer in the cockpit and runs a 5mm hull. It’s big enough to comfortably fish four adults and provides excellent protection from the elements. Not only is the cabin and wheelhouse area the same as the

Sounds Viking looks very sharp with the black vinyl finish.

From a fishing aspect, the side coamings are at a good height to brace yourself up against, and there is ample toe space below for a secure hold when fighting that big fish. The side decks are wider than previous XHT models and include a spray deflector on the outside. Another change is the rubber fender around the boat has been replaced with a solid alloy extrusion. Jason says that this was done to not only strengthen the joint area but also speeds up production. It is now standard on all models. If you are a diver, then you will appreciate the deep, wide side trays that are spacious enough to hold a couple of dive tanks either side. Also, the dive ladder is diver friendly. There is no storage available in the cockpit sole, with buoyancy chambers WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

either side of the underfloor fuel tank. U-Deck is used throughout all flooring and deck surfaces. The transom design is the same as the 570 XHT with a transom walkthrough and dropdown gate to port, with battery storage in the centre behind two large hatches. Sounds Viking came with a fixed bait station, complete with five-rod holders and knife slots, but again this is optional. There is space under the transom area for twin tote tanks, should the 160 litres underfloor not be enough for you. A live bait tank option is available under the step though. Standard seating in the 590 XHT is a pair of fully adjustable bucket seats with bolsters on alloy mounts. The owner of Sounds

Viking had also gone for a couple of 115 litre Icey Tek bins which conveniently slide under each seat and double as extra seating. They can be pushed forward when not required and leave you with more fishing space. Great wet or dry storage bins with split lid openings. Seating layouts are optional. The helm surface is large enough for a 16” MFD, with our boat fitted with a Simrad Go9. Jason says most of the boats go out with a 12” MFD and that still leaves plenty of space for switches and instrument clusters. The toughened glass side screens are fixed on the 590 XHT, but when you go to the larger 630 XHT, you can have sliding side windows. Windscreen wipers are optional on all the XHT models.

BUILT TOUGH

Construction is based around an integral hull framing system created by Jason using CNC cut interlocking full-depth full-length frames making a rigid dependable system. This along with CNC profile cut boats bring about fine tolerances and perfectly symmetrical and well-balanced boats. Tapering pontoons not only accentuate the sleek appearance but assist in the soft none-pounding ride, designed to act as cushioning effect in the rough water. High sides give great protection from spray and provide ample storage around the boat ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #21

for all types of gear, meaning a clutter free deck and more room to fish! Jason referred to his hull design as his X-Series and was introduced to make a wider boat that didn’t require any more horsepower to achieve the same performance. Tapered down-turned chines step the pontoon out further and are lifted so not to cause any drag in the water once the boat is planning. In addition to this, the X series hulls are designed with a fully welded longitudinal flood plate above the keel line and parallel to the floor. This acts as a stiffener to the hull and offers a unique safety aspect if the keel is breached in a collision, as it would only allow approx 70L (70kg) of water to enter the hull allowing the boat to float still and function normally.

DESIGNED TO PERFORM

One aspect of all the DNA boats that has always impressed me is the way they ride and perform. Right from the smallest cuddy and centre console, through to the biggest hardtops, they are exceptional on the water. Having tested most of the DNA boats in Tasman Bay, outside Port Nelson, I have experienced everything from flat glassy calm to 3m breaking seas, and nothing seems to faze them. Obviously, you don’t take a 5m cuddy or

centre console out in big seas, but if you do, then you can do it with some confidence. The 590 XHT is designed to perform in moderate to rough water and comes with a well tested hull design, born from the 570 XHT. While the 590 XHT has an outboard max rating of 150hp, the owner of Sounds Viking decided he wanted more, so fitted a Honda 175. Interestingly this gave a top speed of 37.5 knots, as opposed to the previous 570 XHT I reviewed with a Honda 115 of 36 knots. At mid-range, around 4000 rpm, the 590 XHT/ Honda 175 had a speed of 30 knots, with the 570 XHT/Honda 115 recording 28.5 knots. A most noticeable difference was the torque of the big 3.6 litre Honda V6 which gives the boat great acceleration. The 115 is based on a smaller 2.25 litre, four-cylinder powerhead. The 175 running a 17” 3ld alloy prop was certainly not overpowering

the 590 XHT, and the boat handled the power with ease. While a 115hp might be a little underpowered a 150hp with a 19” 3 bld alloy prop is just about right.

FAMILY BOAT

Jason says that the DNA is an all-round family boat and I would have to agree. Fishing Saturday and wakeboarding Sunday. Works for me. Since the first XHT was released, DNA has built over 40 from the three models, and the 590 XHT has proven one of the more popular. While the 570 XHT and the 590 XHT are very similar apart from the overall length, the 630 XHT has a larger wheelhouse and cockpit area but maintains the same 2.27m beam. The 590 XHT boat is still towable on a single axle trailer and can be launched and handled by one person.

The helm surface is large enough for a 16” MFD, with our boat fitted with a Simrad Go9.

A

nchors have been used on boats since before the Phoenicians, thousands of years ago. And, for many thousands of years, the only way to retrieve an anchor was by manually hauling it up off the sea bottom. Although hard work and, depending on the size of the boat and corresponding anchor, it was bodily managed by stint of a seaman or several crew hauling on whatever type rode* (rope, chain, woven flax or whatever) was used to secure the anchor to the boat. However, as boats got larger and larger, so did the anchors. By the time global explorations, dating back to the Vikings, Chinese, Arabs, Polynesians and Europeans; as well as many other seafaring peoples, got seriously underway, the anchors were of a size that it became impossible to physically haul them up, no matter how many crewmen were aboard. Thus a mechanical means needed to be introduced. Somewhere around the 14th century the manual anchor winch (capstan/windlass **), first made its appearance aboard boats. In its earliest form, the capstan consisted of a timber mounted vertically through a vessel’s structure which was free to rotate. Levers, known as bars, were inserted through holes at the top of the timber and used to turn the capstan. A rope wrapped several turns around the drum was thus hauled upon to retrieve the anchor.

boat owners lusted after the same convenience. Today, there are many different types of powered anchor winches installed and used on trailer boats. From simple capstans, to vertical and horizontal automatic rope/chain units to drum reel winches; and many variations in between. Basically, if you feel the need for an anchor winch, whether you own an old wooden 4.7 Sea Nymph or a recently built 8m Tristram, there is an anchor winch out there to fit your boat and budget. So, let’s break it down and see how all this evolved.

CAPSTAN WINCHES

Capstan winches were the first and most commonly chosen power winches to be fitted on trailer boats. There were two main reasons for this. First they were essentially all that was suitable and available. Second, they were relatively inexpensive and reasonably easy to install. Although, all chain automatic windlasses had been available for many years before the 1960’s, they were seldom installed on trailer boats as these hardly ever used all chain rodes; mainly because all that chain added too much weight to the bow of the boat. By far, the most commonly used anchor rode consisted of a few metres of suitably sized chain (usually 6mm or 8mm - depending on the length of the trailer boat) connected to, generally by means of a shackle and eye splice thimble, a desired length of suitably strong anchor rope.

An ancient capstan winch. The three main type of rode configurations.

Anchor winches continued to be manually operated well into the 18th century and it was only with the advent of steam, that the anchor winch could be “powered”. Modern capstans are now powered electrically, hydraulically, or sometimes pneumatically. Typically, a gearbox is used which trades reduced speed, relative to the prime mover (engine), for increased torque.

This was a great set up. Strong and secure, it was almost fool proof. The rope portion of the rode could quickly be warped around the capstan (by looping three or four turns of the rope around the drum) and the anchor then easily retrieved once the capstan was powered on and the bitter end of the rode kept under tension while hauling and feeding the rope on board. However, once the shackle/eye splice thimble reached the capstan drum, the rope had to be carefully released from around the drum while ensuring the chain and anchor didn’t relaunch itself below the waves once again. The remaining chain and the anchor were then manually hauled aboard and stowed. All very complex and, as I can personally attest, inconvenient, somewhat risky and bloody hard work, especially for us older sea dogs. Having said all this, the good old capstan is still one of the most popular ways of winching in your trailer boat anchor.

POWERED UP

While powered anchor winches became the norm on larger commercial and recreational vessels (say over 10 to 15 m) throughout the 20th century, they didn’t start to make an appearance on Antipodean trailer boats until somewhere around the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Up until then, boaters had resigned themselves to crawling up onto the bow of the boat, or sticking their head and upper body through a forward deck hatch, to grab the anchor rode and haul it, hand over hand, until the anchor was secured back aboard. Although common practice, this method of raising the anchor was both hard work and potentially dangerous, particularly in rough seas. Jealousy casting their eyes on their fellow boaters on larger vessels; equipped with powered anchor winches which they effortlessly and safely operated from their helm stations, trailer

SPLICING SUCCESS

But a better system needed to be developed and anchor winch companies around the world were quick to start developing products to meet the demand for a small anchor winch, suitable for trailer boats, that could be operated from the security, comfort and convenience of the helm station. An all chain rode is fairly simple to work with. Chain only anchor winches (both vertical and horizontal) had been on the market for ages and worked very well by simply hauling up the chain around a chainwheel (gypsy) and depositing the rode into the chain locker (anchor locker) (diagram 1).

Basically splicing the rope portion of the anchor rode directly to the chain portion, thus eliminating the cumbersome eye splice/thimble and shackle connection almost universally used up until this point in time, but problematic in regards to automatic windlass retrieval of the anchor. However before proceeding further, it is interesting to note that in the early 1990’s, Maxwell Winches did develop and market an automatic rope/chain windlass that was able to handle a conventional rope eye splice/thimble and chain shackle connection. It was extremely innovative technology which actually worked well, but was quite expensive. And, although it was manufactured and sold for a few years, its limited sales eventually halted production and it was withdrawn from the market. Maxwell RSC Windlass was capable of handling a conventional rope/eye splice-shackle chain rode.

But back to the rope/chain splice solution. It is no exaggeration to say that the acceptance and subsequent wide spread use of the rope to chain splice absolutely revolutionised the use of automatic anchor winches on small trailer boats beginning in the late 1960s / early nineteen nineties and continuing through until today. Before delving into an examination of the many and varied anchor winches used on trailer boats in the 21st century, it is necessary to understand the rope/chain splice and why this simple development allowed trailer boat owners to start installing automatic anchor winches on their boats in overwhelming numbers except for the smaller end trailer boats; where even on these smaller craft it is not uncommon to see a simple capstan winch being used to haul in the anchor with the rope/chain spliced rode. The idea of directly splicing the rope to the chain had been entertained for years before actually being accepted by boaties, simply because there was a widely held belief that the actual rope/chain join was not strong enough and people believed that under extreme load, this rope/chain splice would break or, after years of use, wear out and give way. However, after extensive bench and real world testing of nylon three strand or 8-plait rope spliced directly to short link chain of various sizes from 6mm to 12 mm, this type of anchor rode was universally accepted by boat owners, thus paving the way for windlass manufacturers to design and build a multitude of different types of automatic rope/ chain anchor winches employing rope/chain gypsies or a drum reel.

Vertical and horizontal windlasses illustrating chain rode retrieval into the chain locker.

The major hurdle to overcome with rope and chain, joined by means of a shackle and thimble eye splice, is how do you get the cumbersome connection around the chainwheel? The solution, as it turned out; even though it took years to successfully develop, was the “automatic rope/chain gypsy. But developing the gypsy was not the main impediment. The main issue was joining the rope and chain so it could seamlessly warp around the gypsy when the windlass was activated and subsequently be fed into the rode locker without snagging. A bit of a chicken and egg situation. Looking back, the solution was quite simple, even though in the early stages, resistance to the idea was quite strong and only by stint of relentless marketing and lots of proof positive testing, did the idea become acceptable within the marine industry. And what was this solution that revolutionised automatic rope/chain anchoring?

GYPSY DEVELOPMENT

NZ Dlstr/!Jutor:

Although an apparent further chicken and egg situation (which came first the rode or the winch?), and even though spliced rope to chain rodes became widely acceptable, the devil was in designing a gypsy *** that would seamlessly haul in the rope, the splice and the chain. At this point it is important to note that we are discussing only ‘conventional’ vertical and horizontal windlasses. An introduction and conversation about drum reel winches will come later. Therefore, before proceeding, allow me to offer some background regarding the two main types of conventional rope/ chain windlasses; vertical and horizontal. Vertical: Pertaining to the winch or windlass. The drive shaft, gypsy and capstan (when applicable) are positioned vertically to the deck. Refer example below.

Although all these rope/chain examples look much the same as their “all chain” vertical and horizontal windlass siblings; as mentioned above, the devil is in the rope/chain gypsy design and function. Whether affixed to a vertical or horizontal windlass, a chain wheel (gypsy) using only chain is relatively easy to design and manufacture. Basically the gypsy is a metal wheel with pockets to accommodate the chain links as the chain is hauled aboard around the chain wheel and fed into what is commonly referred to as the chain locker (see diagram (1) previous page). The main constraint is ensuring that every windlass

manufacturer can supply a suitable chain wheel to match all the chain manufactures’ various sized chains and specifications. And these are indeed varied! When it comes to the gypsy for a rope/chain windlass, not only does the gypsy have to accommodate the chain links, it also has to be able to grip and haul in the rope portion of the rode while also ensuring the rope to chain splice doesn’t get jammed as it too rotates around the gypsy and into the chain (rope/chain) locker.

A Lewmar vertical rope/chain winch mounted on boat deck.

The Muir Storm VR600 is a free fall winch with a capacity of 300kg max load.

However, when it came to incorporating a means of also gripping the rope as well as the rope/chain splice around the gypsy, this was an entirely different matter! In principle, the rope simply needed to be ‘jammed’ into the wheel, much as a rope aboard a sailing boat is jammed into a cleat to hold it secure and without slipping.

SIZE MATTERS

It is safe to say that every windlass manufacturer agonised over the design of an effective rope/chain gypsy until finally perfecting it. In essence, the concept was simple. The chain portion of the gypsy remained much the same as for a conventional chain wheel. That is, a series of chain link pockets (on average half a dozen or more) around the inner circumference of the wheel to accommodate and ‘lock in’ the links as the chain rotates around the wheel before the links are ‘unlocked’ by means of a chain stripper, thus enabling the chain to be peeled off and fed into the, below deck, chain locker.

Simple as it may have seemed, the reality was quite a different matter. Numerous sized rope/chain combinations had to be taken into account as well as consideration given to the fact that the various chain manufacturers’ size specifications varied, as did rope manufacturers’ sizes and types of rope. But, in order to keep this part of the narrative relatively simple to understand, suffice it to say that any given short link chain (by in large 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm) will be considered to be to the same specification and that, in general, these days

suitable for any type of recreational vessel, never mind a trailer boat, where the constraints of the bow and anchor locker design would make it unimanginable. But the idea was sound. So, as is often the case, innovative manufacturers began to come up with smaller and more compact variations of the commercial drum reel winch and were able to adapt their designs to make this type of anchor winch fit either on the foredeck or in the anchor locker of trailer boats.

only two main types of nylon rope are employed with automatic rope/chain anchor winches; 8-plait and 3-strand. As a rule, the corresponding size (diameter) of the rope used with a given chain size (the chain size is always the first consideration) is generally as follows: Short Link Chain Size (plus) Nylon Rope Size 6mm 12mm 8mm 14-16mm 10mm 16mm 12mm 20mm Why is this important? Because gripping the rope, and especially being able to securely grip the rope splice, is the key to successful hauling in and deployment of the anchor. All windlass manufacturers initially struggled with rope and chain gypsy design but today it is safe to say that all of them have come up with a solution that works. That is, the windlass can haul in or deploy the anchor without the rope portion of the rode slipping or jamming. All manufacturers have followed the principle of the ‘jam cleat’ concept, wherein the V-shaped ribs of the cleat grip the rope whether slack (assisted by a pressure arm pushing the rope into the gypsy) or while under tension (which physically forces the rope more tightly, and therefore more securely, into the rope cleat portion of the gypsy). One manufacturer, patented a variation in design of the cleat portion which saw the top and bottom ribs of the cleat oppose each other, claiming a superior grip of the rope via their ‘wave design’ concept.

DRUM WINCHES

Stressfree Marine is one of Australia’s premier winch manufacturers and is credited with starting the drum winch evolution over 20 years ago.

In 1995, Australian Dean Forster pioneered the trailer boat drum winch and while drum winches were not a new concept, it was Dean who perfected the application for small boats. His awardwinning company Stressfree Marine is one of the world leaders in the manufacture and design of drum winches. It was, however, not an immediate success and it took about 5 years to ‘educate’ the Australian boat owners into the benefits of a drum winch. While the first trailer boat drum winches were seen as cumbersome arrangements mounted on the foredeck, today that has all changed. They did a great job but they looked ugly and in many ways were very agricultural. The idea was right but the profile needed some refinement. It wasn’t too long before someone had the bright idea of recessing the drum winch into the anchor locker and below the deck profile. All of a sudden the drum winch gained acceptance, especially amongst the alloy boat manufacturers. The benefit they had over the fibreglass builders is they could easily adapt the anchor locker to accept the size of a drum winch and electric motor. Drum winches take space and when you are talking about an under 5.5m boat, the anchor locker volume isn’t generally that much. What happens with the drum winch, is all the rode is spooled onto the drum so doesn’t have any drop at all. The drum can be mounted on the base of the anchor locker or the bulkhead and as long as there is a clean and clear line to the bow roller and it is fitted correctly, it is almost impossible to get a bind up. One of the benefits of a drum winch is they are capable of handling more rode ( the warp & chain) than you might otherwise get into your standard anchor locker. When it comes to the anchor warp, you don’t have to stick with the conventional braided anchor rope. If you are out in the deeper water and need as much warp on the drum as possible, then some boat owners are using rope such as Dyneema or Spectra. This allows you to maintain the strength, due to the extremely high breaking strain rating and means you can drop down the size of the warp to 4mm or even 2mm. Most manufacturers offer drum winches with 12 or 24 volts sealed motors that can be mounted through a 360-degree arc,

One of the benefits of a drum winch is they are capable of handling more rode than you might otherwise get into your standard anchor locker.

Up until now we have been discussing ‘convential’ anchor winches. That is, the type of windlasses that were traditionally installed on larger boats before becoming an option on trailer boats. Having said that, this leads us to another type of windlass not generally seen on pleasure craft (until more recently), but often seen on commercial boats, particularly fishing trawlers. Sitting on the deck, they were big and ugly, and it became obvious that this is not something that would be

so you can adjust it to fit the space available. Drum winches draw around 25 - 30 amps and under load up to 60 amps, so it is recommended that dual batteries be installed. This is no different to a standard capstan style winch. Drum winches vary from as light as 12 kg and as much as 170 kgs. If you compare a Maxwell RC6 winch, that weighs just 8 kg, with a max pull of 500kg and a capacity for 12mm rope and 6mm chain, with a similar capacity drum winch, they are up to three to four times heavier. However, some manufacturers present the weight of their drum winch with the rode on, so it pays to check if you are not sure. Also, a low profile RC6 winch will set you back around $1300 to $1500, whereas a comparable drum winch will generally anywhere between $2000 to $3500. If you thought you could never get a drum winch into the anchor locker, then think again. There are now some very compact models available that are designed specifically for boats under 5m. Manufacturers have done a lot in recent years to improve not only the way their drum winches operate and their efficiency but also the quality and the compactness.

SUMMARY

Understanding all this background is the precursor to realizing how anchor winch manufacturers were able to come up with practical solutions enabling trailer boat builders and owners to easily install automatic rope/chain windlasses on their boats at a realistic price. Today’s trailer boat owner has a plethora of automatic and semi-automatic choices in regards to avoiding having to manually haul up the anchor hand over hand from a precariously balanced perch on the bow of his/her boat. So, no matter what size trailer boat you own there is an anchor winch to suit it and your wallet.

I

have always had great respect for Rodney Harris and his Kiwi Kraft Boats, ever since I reviewed my first one back in 2001. That was a Kiwi Kraft 530, and it was part of a quinella of similar sized pontoon boats that I compared. I said at the time that it was super impressed by the ride, handling and finish, and now, after taking a 545 CC home for the weekend, I can see that the company has maintained those high standards. A few years ago, I also reviewed the 545 Sports, a cuddy version of the 545, and again I couldn’t fault the boat. High praise but well deserved. Built in Invercargill, the home of some of this country’s leading alloy boat builders, Aqualine is built by Kiwi Kraft. Now that may WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

sound a little confusing, but there is a positive reason for the name. The Aqualine 545 CC was developed initially for the Australian market where the Aqualine name replaces Kiwi Kraft. Designer and builder of Kiwi Kraft boats, Rodney Harris felt that trying to sell a New Zealand built alloy boat into the Australian market with Kiwi in the title wasn’t a smart move. However, changing to the more generic, Aqualine was. Since the first Aqualine boats entered the Australian market in 2004 over 200, have been sold to both private and commercial owners. The Aqualine 545 CC featured, is the sistership to a fleet of six that was delivered a few years ago to the Northern Territory

Police. However, not wanting the Ozzies to have too much of a good thing, national Kiwi Kraft/ Aqualine dealer, Boat City, started promoting the model locally. “It is a great boat that we see being ideal for the Kiwi fisherman, with not only a fabulous ride and finish but also it’s affordable”, says Mark Presnell, sales consultant at Auckland Marine Centre, Auckland dealers for Kiwi Kraft and Aqualine. While our boat was highly speced, Mark has ideas to offer the Aqualine range as a more basic entrylevel package. “We plan to offer the Aqualine as a no-frills model built by Kiwi Kraft, that maybe lacks some of the extras and features, but takes nothing away from the ride, performance and finish. “Sort of Commodore as opposed to a Calais”, says Mark. It’s a boat that is unashamedly being market to the lure fishing market, with 400mm walkways either side of the centre console and a forward raised casting deck. Floor to gunnel, the 545 CC is 800mm, with 200mm side decks. No matter where you stand or sit in the boat, it is fishable. Interestingly when I was fishing from the rear of the cockpit, I spent quite a bit of the time seated, with my feet up against the transom. Almost like fishing from a game chair.

areas. The bow features a built-in anchor pulpit, with a trolling motor mounting plate alongside. The anchor locker is massive and completely open, with plenty of space to mount a small drum winch. You could have the factory close this in with a solid deck and fit an auto capstan, but I would go for the drum winch and leave it open. Below the forward casting deck is a 250mm deep locker, which drains into the cockpit should you want to stow wet gear. There is a secure dry locker either side, which is a great place to store the safety gear. Keeping it dry and also easy to reach in a hurry. The bow area can be left clear or as in the case of our boat, came with a 55 litre Icey Tek bin. Interestingly this is mounted onto a sideopening hatch in the cockpit sole, that lifts to reveal another substantial wet locker, deep enough for dive bottles and scuba gear. The size of the centre console is such it still leaves ample room around it, while a large enough dash for instruments, controls and an MFD. In our case, a Simrad GO9, with binnacle mounted Mercury controls. A tray at the base of the perspex screen proved ideal to keep my phone and tractor keys dry. Storage in the console can be accessed both from the front or rear of the unit. As is customary from Kiwi Kraft the T-top is over engineered with heavy guage alloy framing and a soft bimini complete with an extension. There are also six-rod holders to add to the four already in the side decks. In line with making this a no-frills boat, the standard

seating is none at all. However, I feel most people would spec the boat with something to sit on. We had a removable 155 litre Icey Tec bin complete with reversible backrest. Makes a great fish or bait bin. Rather than build in a dedicated tube under the cockpit cheque-plate floor for all the cables, there is a slightly raised panel down the centre, aft of the centre console, that provides space to run controls and steering cables back to the transom. Clean, tidy and out of the way. Running the full length of the 545 CC, including right up into the bow is open storage trays, capable of taking your longest boat rods. These are recessed into the tube sponsons and again show the thought gone into the overall design concept of this small boat. Aft it’s quite busy, with a battery locker to starboard, a small storage locker in the centre and a step through with a live bait tank under to port. wash down pump fitted. There is even a place to drop in a pole if you want to tow some water toys.

We had a Mercury 115 on the transom which I managed to squeeze out to 31.5 knots @ 6000 rpm, running a Spitfire 17” four-blade. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the Mercury Smartcraft to give me the fuel readings. Well, actually, I was not smart enough to figure it out. So based on what my own Mercury 90 does with the same prop on a similar size boat, I reckon maximum would be around 27 lph. Bring that back to 4500 rpm @ 26 knots, and figures around 21 lph would be reasonably close.

BUILT TOUGH

Multiple sealed chambers for extra buoyancy and safety, mean you can effectively leave the bungs out and the boat will not sink. Full-length underfloor stringers are fully welded with a cross brace system for added strength & safety. The round tube pontoons which are designed to provide a softer and quieter ride are all part of what Kiwi Kraft call their Hushtec Ride hull design. The large pontoons offer excellent stability, as I experience with two of us and a dog out fishing. Sea conditions when I took the boat out started mirror smooth with 5 knots of breeze, but gradually rose to 20 knots and whitecaps. Coming home, it was hard on the nose, but with a little playing around with the engine trim, I got the boat sitting perfectly on the close wave pattern. No spray, no bumps and the dog fell asleep on the floor. Just like all Aqualine boats I have reviewed, I found the ride and handling exceptional.

WIDE CHOICE

If you like what you see in the Aqualine 545 but want something bigger, smaller or with more weather protection, then there are plenty of other options. There are seven models in the Aqualine range, including a 595 Hardtop, four cuddys from the 435 to the 565 and two centre consoles, the 495 and 545. Mark points out that while he sees a market for a bare-bones version, either in centre or side console, he will still be offering the highly speced 545CC as well. The large pontoons offer excellent stability, as I experience with two of us and a dog out fishing.

An early advert for the Phillips cassette car radio.

REMEMBER THE 8-TRACK

The 60’s saw the advent of tape, encapsulated in a type of cassette, with the introduction of 8 track. A good number of titles were available at the time. Portable units were primarily used for the auto market, but a number found their way on board larger vessels and that certainly upped the ante in terms of music playback, but it was a pretty clumsy and unreliable solution. In 1962 Philips invented the compact cassette and it was displayed at an electronics show in Europe, but it wasn’t till the late 60’s/early 70’s that we saw in-dash car compact cassette players on the market. They were also large clunky units, but a few found their way onto boats – at least until the savages of the salt environment rendered them useless. Fairly quickly we saw more compact combination radio/ cassette units come on to the market and these were the staple for in-car music playback throughout the 70’s and 80’s. It wasn’t long before many of these units were found on boats, once various brands found ways make them more resistant to the harsh salt environment, with varying degrees of success. One of the most prolific was a waterproof cover that you needed to open every time an adjustment had to be made – hardly an elegant solution, but reasonably effective for a short time.

W

ell… hasn’t marine entertainment changed and advanced over the last 50 years. We’ve seen a plethora of formats and brands come and go over the years, and one must wonder what the future holds. Back in the 60’s, entertainment on board would likely consist of an AM transistor radio, the aerial up and the signal coming in and out as the boat swung on the anchor. You would have been better off with a crewman who could play guitar with a good old rum-induced sing song – if it didn’t sound any better, the rum certainly improved things. At that time, only an odd few boats sported the early battery-operated reel-to-reel tape recorder for music, and so started the introduction of tape.

FUSION IS BORN Yes, in 2001 Apple released the iPod, a device that stored music in software form. The iPod was instrumental in saving Apple from ruin, according to popular opinion. It was to become the standard for music storage in the 2000’s, allowing us to literally store a suitcase full of CD’s in your pocket.

In 1983 Alpine introduced a marine specific radio cassette - the 7235M (Marine).

MARINE SPECIFIC

In 1983 Alpine introduced a marine specific radio cassette - the 7235M (Marine). This incorporated a Quick Release Bracket (QRB) that enabled the user to transfer the stereo from the boat to the car and vice versa, hence limiting the amount of time the stereo spent in the harsh marine environment. Alpine even supplied a padded shoulder bag to transport your very delicate piece of equipment. This system worked pretty well because it greatly reduced the time the stereo lived in the marine environment and incorporated many marine friendly ideas including water resistant controls and a cassette flap that sealed when closed. In 1982 we enter the world of digital, with the first commercially available CD player, released for home use by Sony and a short time later by Alpine, this time as a two box in-car CD player. This was a game changer and marked the beginning of a multitude of CD players being released for cars and boats alike. This new format, initially touted as being indestructible (which it wasn’t), raised the game as far as sound quality was concerned, but as with all new formats, CD’s were at first slow to be released. The writer remembers Dire Straits – Brother in Arms released in CD early and wow – how it played!! Before long having one Compact Disc in a player was not enough – how about 10 discs loaded into a machine? That one was nicknamed the Stacker. The CD stacker was inherently well-suited to the marine environment, as you could hide it away in a dry area – but sadly the persistent salt air soon laid waste to many of them as well. During the late 80’s and 90’s a number of recordable digital formats were introduced including DAT (Digital Audio Tape, introduced by Philips) and MD (Mini Disk, introduced by Sony). A few of these new formats found their way onto boats but, due to an earthshattering new format from Apple, these had only limited commercial success in the domestic market.

Around this time, a fledgling car audio company was founded by two young brothers in West Auckland, Kurt and Stuart McNall. From such modest beginnings, Fusion would grow to be the market leader in marine nntertainment. During the mid-2000’s Sir Peter Maire acquired the company. Peter was a musician, audiophile and boater and he saw a massive gap in the market for marine audio. He involved a number of his designers and engineers from his previous company Navman, to produce a ground up marine CD/Tuner, the MS-CD500 that not only sounded awesome but was completely water resistant. Then came the iPod inside version, a world first – the MS-IP500. This concept was to become the future of marine audio. So confident was Peter in what he’d produced, he introduced a 5-year warranty policy which was previously unheard of in marine audio. In fact you would be hard pressed to find any units that would last that long.

The Fusion MS-IP500 was the world’s first marine stereo to accept an iPod.

This drew a line in the sand in terms of longevity that we had never seen before, especially in the harsh South Pacific marine environment. Incidentally, the vast majority of boating in the US, the largest market globally, is done on fresh water. Panbo, probably the most prestigious marine electronics reviewer in the world, described the 500 series as a “Master Class” by which all other marine stereos should be measured. Around this time, a small (he says facetiously) Japanese company called Sony introduced a specifically designed marine stereo, the CDX-H range, that did the job very well. But there was no getting around the fact that this was a car stereo reversed engineered for the marine environment. A range of white and silver coloured marine CD / Tuners were also released by Sony that were very similar to their car audio products at the time. By coincidence the Sony GMD616 marina cover was also sold at the same time.

Sony’s CDX-H range, was a car stereo reversed engineered for the marine environment.

At the same time, the Japanese company Clarion was a name that was well recognised in the marine market, in fact number 1. Unfortunately for them Fusion’s aggressive growth caught them sleeping and Fusion quickly surpassed them as the global market leader. Today Fusion enjoys the satisfaction of supplying the largest builder in Clarion’s own home market – Japan. During the 2000’s new release of marine CD/Tuners were common place around the world but, again, there was no getting away from the fact that most were reversed engineered car stereos, probably just acceptable for fresh water but by no means up to the rigors of the harsh salt marine environment. JL Audio, an American high-end car audio supplier, which began life producing home speakers in 1975, entered the marine speaker market in 2005. Due to their enormous appeal in the US car audio and home markets they soon became the high end go-to marine speaker product in the US, often partnered with stereos from Fusion.

JL Audio entered the marine speaker market in 2005.

By now Fusion Marine was leading the way with a large number of world firsts and enviable market shares globally. Many prominent boat companies, including the world’s largest trailer boat builder Sea Ray, are now supplied by Fusion exclusively. The first OEM contract Fusion secured worldwide was coincidentally one of the most innovative boat companies in the world – Sea Legs from New Zealand. Fusion went on to supply nearly all builders in New Zealand and by far, the majority of builders across the globe.

Clarion have long been a supplier to the marine stereo market.

Now, let’s just go back in time for a moment, and you’ll soon see why. In 1989 a short-range radio system was introduced by Ericson, primarily for the communication industry. Over the years there have been many advancements and today’s version is 5.2. During this decade we have seen audio and control protocols introduced allowing the user to ‘stream’ music directly from their smart phone, control the basic settings and send metadata to allow information about the music being played on the stereo. Unfortunately, Bluetooth had its limitations in term of range and audio quality, as it was originally designed as a communication protocol for the use of earpieces and hands-free kits for phones. Never missing a beat Apple saw this opportunity and in 2010 introduced Airplay, allowing higher quality audio to be streamed to other devices. In 2018 Airplay 2 was introduced by Apple, a vast improvement over Airplay 1 allowing audio, video and metadata to be streamed to and from multiple devices, in different rooms or cabins with much more sophisticated control. To the best of the writer’s knowledge, Fusion is the only mainstream marine audio company that has embraced this new technology, with the all-singing, all-dancing Apollo Series, aptly named to represent one of man’s greatest achievements (putting a man on the moon) and in honour of the Greek god of music. Also included in the Apolo 770 series is the world’s first touchscreen stereo, WiFi , Fusion Link, Party Bus, Multi Zone, Multi Source, Bluetooth, and Airplay 2 to name some, but not all, of what this unit can do. It’s gone on to win many world awards. And again, Panbo reviewed the ‘Fusion Apollo Series’ as truly “the sum of audio innovation”.

Load speakers have dramatically changed over the years with improvements in materials, adhesives, designs and components. Marine loudspeakers today are not only loud but, as Fusions Signature Series show, can faithfully and accurately reproduce music the way the musicians and producers intended the music to be heard – not the inaccurate sounds of heavy, overcooked bass and ear bleeding highs. Multi-coloured lighting has also been included on many models of marine speakers, not only to add ‘bling’ to interiors and exteriors but as a practical lighting feature, adding to the mood of vessels.

Fusion Signature Series speakers accurately reproduce music the way the musicians intended the music to be heard.

As with audio, adding video distribution around the vessel is important. There are a multitude of video playback devices from huge actuated screens on larger boats, down to video playback on MFD’s – to keep the kids occupied while the last hour or so of fishing on the bite is had – while sound is played back through the boat stereo system. There have been many brands of marine audio products introduced into this sector – in fact, too many to mention here.

The writer has intentionally highlighted the main players that have participated over the years. Oh, how the world has changed from that old AM transistor radio fading in and out as the boat swings at anchor, 50 years ago, to what we have today. As I’ve said before, one can only think in wonder what the next 50 years will bring – one’s imagination, and the great skills of the multitude of engineers in this industry, is the only limit.

The reverse bucket design offers unrivalled vessel responsiveness with a smooth progressive transition from forward to reverse, without noisy gear changes. The HJ213 is the diesel engine equivalent of the HJ212 featuring more robust construction, comprehensive anode protection and hydraulic pump, cooler and cylinder for reverse control. towards the ocean ahead while minimising water on the screen and maximising shade. The forward positioned engine offers plenty of room to move, while all important storage is ample. The spacious cockpit (4.8m2) provides a practical area for divers to gear up and unload with access to a self-draining storage area and customisable workstation. The large bow floor area (2.9m2) gives fishers the freedom to play their catch in any direction and enables passengers to walk straight off the front onto a dock or the shore. The open transom provides a self-draining deck that can take on the waves, as well as easy access on and off the boat (self-draining transom also available). The engine cover doubles as seating and storage. It also integrates a chilly bin area and steps up to the roof. e740 also boasts many other features to make life on the water easy, including an electric anchor

winch, integrated boarding ladders and anti-slip, easy to clean rubber matting. Optional extras include a twin axle HamiltonJetbranded trailer, colour changing underwater lighting and a variety of navigational, information-display and fishing assistance systems that can be specified as part of the build. Single waterjet powered boats turn on the spot and perform rapid stops with ease, without additional thrusters. The e740’s exceptional visibility via large cabin windows and low bow profile provides outstanding water views for easy manoeuvring while the spacious walkaround offers unrestricted access for boat positioning. The shallow draft, combined with waterjet impellors safely contained within the body of the jet, deliver unrivalled shallow water capability. This means e740 can cross shallow river bars, river mouths and estuaries, or launch straight off the beach without damage to the drivetrain.
