CIRCA RELEASE NEW GENERATION 950 THE ALL-NEW CIRCA 950 HERALDS THE RETURN TO SERIOUS TRAILER BOAT PRODUCTION FOR THIS 40 PLUS-YEAR-OLD ALLOY BOAT BUILDER. Whangarei’s Circa Marine is one of the most diverse aluminium boat builders in New Zealand, producing an incredibly wide variety of boats for more than 40 years. Not only are they specialising in quality aluminium fabrication of sailing yachts, catamarans, launches, RIBS, fishing boats, and commercial vessels, they also have time to build a few trailer boats. Anyone who has been around trailer boats for a long time will well remember the 6-7m Circa boats that established the brand’s presence in the high end of the trailer boat market.
Their reputation for build quality, rough water performance and handling has always been a hallmark of their designs. However, in recent years the company has been so busy with larger projects, that trailer boat production slowed to only a few boats a year, and for a while, it looked like this famous brand might simply fade away. Well not so, and thanks to the enthusiastic mentoring and encouragement of Offshore Boats NZ’s, Jonathan Barlow it now seems this iconic brand is starting a whole new chapter in its development. The first of the new generation of Circa boats is the impressive Circa 950, a boat that makes a bold statement, that the marque is back. So why reenter at the top end of the trailer boat

market, when their 6-7m models were so popular? According to Jonathan, it was primarily because he was already building a new line of 6.5-7.5m alloy boats under the Offshore brand, and he needed something that would complement his range. Offshore Boats NZ and Circa Marine have had a long collaboration, with Circa building the hulls and superstructure and Offshore Boats NZ completing all the finishing, fitout and sales. “It’s worked really well for both of us over the years, and the combination of our respective skills has resulted in the new 950”, says Jonathan. Circa Marine’s principal, Bruce Farrand, designed his first trailer boats over 30 years, and the new 950 is a derivative of those initial designs.

Obviously, things have been tweaked and changed over the years, and with the 950, we see another step in both design and layout. Plus Circa’s superb fabrication has been equally complimented by Offshore Boats NZ, bespoke finish and attention to detail. Overall impression of the Circa 950 is a perfect balance of aesthetics and functional design. Circa 950 is a big boat in every sense. It’s 9.5m overall, with a 2.85m beam, has a trailerable weight of 3840 kgs (no fluids) and a hefty price tag above
$NZ500,000. So what do you get for half a million dollars plus? Firstly there are the twin 300hp Yamaha outboards, completed with Helm Master, a tripleaxle CAM alloy trailer and a boat that comes with over $60,000 worth of electronics. Then it’s plus, plus, plus when it comes to all the equipment onboard. Jonathan says he works from a clean sheet of paper with his clients, and it’s a matter of ticking all the boxes to finalise the fitout. The layouts can be specific to what a

client wants, and it doesn’t matter if the emphasis is on cruising or fishing, just about anything is possible. The Circa 950 is more than a trailer boat, it is a small launch. However, it has the benefit of being transportable to anywhere in the country. Taupo one weekend and the Bay Of Islands the next. The fact it can be customised to suit your imagination means the boat you get is going to be 100% what you want. Contact: Jonathan Barlow Ph 027 439 1564 / sales@northlandmarine.co.nz

TRADE ZONE ADDICTED TO FISHING IS BACK! HOST AND CREATOR OF TRADEZONE ADDICTED TO FISHING, NICKY SINDEN, SAYS VIEWERS ARE IN FOR A TREAT WHEN THE NEW SEASON HITS SCREENS. “This season will blow all our other seasons out of the water,” says Sinden. “We’ve always tried to be different and give viewers a variety week to week, and this time we’ve pushed the boat out. There’s a lot more underwater action, more of a focus on fish utilisation, preparation and cooking, and a huge mix of people and places featured.” Sinden says she and her team had to think on their feet when the COVID-19 lockdown stopped them from filming part way through their schedule, which has lent a unique flavour to her seventh and final season of the show. “While we were in lockdown I got bombarded with messages from people asking all sorts of questions about fishing”, says Sinden. “There were so many questions about where to find fish, how to catch them, what gear to use and how to prepare them, so we tried to answer as many of those questions as possible. Our Kingfish Special and Snapper Special episodes will appeal to anyone who wants to know the ‘A to Z’ of these fish.” She also says the forthcoming Season 7 is all about the ‘grassroots’ of fishing, featuring down-to-earth, real-life characters, in pursuit of fish that are realistically in reach of all Kiwis. But that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of seriously big fish in Season 7, and viewers who tune in on 25 July to see the first episode will be treated to a taste of landbased big game fishing, as Nicky heads to Tauranga Harbour to wrangle huge bronze whaler sharks off the beach. “This season is so different, and we had so much fun filming it. I’m really excited to share it with everyone”, says Sinden. Tune in to the new season of TradeZone Addicted to Fishing from 25 July, at 5 pm Saturdays on Prime TV.
SUZUKI ADD FLY BY WIRE TO SMALLER SUZUKI NOW OFFERS 115HP AND 140HP OUTBOARDS WITH DRIVE-BY-WIRE CONTROLS. THE DF115BG AND DF140BG OUTBOARDS ARE NOW AVAILABLE WITH FLY-BY-WIRE TECHNOLOGY WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY RESERVED FOR THE 150HP TO 350HP RANGE. Suzuki claims to be the first outboard engine manufacturer in the world to offer 115hp and 140hp outboard engines with drive-by-wire controls. The enhancement replaces conventional mechanical cable and electrical wire systems to improve smoothness and secure shifting as well as providing more precise throttle control. Added benefits are claimed to be improved fuel efficiency and enhanced silencing through the improved suppression of intake sound. The other main features are upgraded compression ratios for the four-stroke engines to improve output characteristics and fuel efficiency. A redesigned cowling incorporates a new air intake structure, and the oil filter position has also been changed so that it can be replaced by just removing the top engine cover for ease of maintenance. The new engines will be produced at Suzuki’s Kosai Plant from October this year and will be launched globally soon after. www.marine.suzuki.co.nz ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #20

YAMAHA HELM MASTER FOR SINGLE ENGINES YAMAHA MARINE HAS INTRODUCED HELM MASTER EX, THE NEXT LEVEL OF CUSTOMISABLE, INTEGRATED BOAT CONTROL. Now available in single through quad outboard applications, Helm Master EX brings forward the benefits from the original Helm Master system, including joystick manoeuvrability, and improves upon them to create greater control and fishability for a broader range of boaters. «The new and improved features of Helm Master EX make boating easier and more convenient than ever before,» says Yamaha›s Marine National Manager, Richard Shaw. “The expansion of the system to single-outboard boat configurations is perfect for the likes of family runabouts through to larger fibreglass and alloy hardtops boats.” “The new joystick option, which is the same as that used on multi-outboard systems, allows boaters who desire single-outboard power to enjoy the majority of the benefits associated with multi-outboard Helm Master EX applications.” Helm Master EX is available across all current Yamaha’s Digital Electronic Control outboards from F150 to XTO
425 and can be installed in single, double, triple and quad outboard applications. Helm Master EX boasts enhanced joystick manoeuvrability with smooth, quiet, precise operation, new singlefunction buttons and new features like DriftPoint Track. Effortless Yamaha Autopilot can be adjusted with the joystick and includes functions such as course and heading hold, Track Point (NAV along waypoints), and two types of pattern steer that seamlessly integrate with Speed Control and Pattern Shift. Besides, joystick adjustability provides increased comfort, control and convenience. It allows for fine-tuning of Yamaha Autopilot and SetPoint features without leaving current mode, creating additional ease of use and capability. Incredibly fast and responsive Digital Electric Steering (DES) means Helm Master EX provides precise control with an uncluttered bilge. DES can now be added to any current and most previous Digital Electronic Control

(DEC)-capable Yamaha outboard models. The system’s DEC (control box) has also been redesigned for ergonomic comfort and ease of use. All functions previously on the Helm Master control now come standard on all Helm Master EX system configurations. Helm Master EX suits a wide variety of boat applications, fits all current Yamaha DEC outboards and back-fits outboards creating a more extensive range of repower flexibility. Also new, Helm Master EX (or its properly configured component systems) can be installed by the boat builder at the factory or by dealers when repowering customer boats at the dealership. This allows boaters flexibility in tailoring their Helm Master EX system to their specific desires. Yamaha’s Helm Master EX PowerMatched/Component Limited Warranty applies to all components within the system. owered by a Hyundai SeasALL 270hp diesel inboard running a Mercruiser Bravo 3 leg, Cold Steel is Tauranga fisherman Macca’s 4th boat and the second he has had built specifically for him. It is his first Purekraft and he says he chose the local boatbuilder because his new boat had to be the “toughest” available. He also wanted it built to his specs and wanted to be able to work alongside the builder to get things exactly as he wanted them. He also liked the fact that Purekraft boats are designed by Hall Marine Design. “They have three naval architects on their staff, undertake proper weight studies as part of their design process and have a really strong reputation here in Tauranga,” he says. Jarrod Hall, who owns both Purekraft Boats and Hall Marine Design, smiles broadly when asked how he coped with having an owner so intimately involved throughout the design and build processes. “It was awesome,” he laughs. A man who loves to chase very big fish, including bluefin and broadbill, Macca wanted a boat that was specifically designed to get out there, do the business and handle the rough water that one inevitably encounters on the way back.

Macca is obviously a man who does what he says. Almost instantly after taking ownership of his new Purekraft, he was out The RH 690days is thelater beyond Mayor Island on his shakedown cruise. A few third Senator for big he was away, motoring from Tauranga to Hicks Bay to chase this very serious bluefin tuna. fisherman. Along the way he encountered a variety of different sea states and wind conditions and was blown away by the way Cold Steel performed. “On the way home, we spent over 7 hours in 20 knot winds and quartering seas and were on autopilot. The boat just cut through the waves and there was none of that annoying alloy noise,” he says. “It was beyond expectations.” With three guys on board, a full 570-litre fuel load, 70 litres of fresh water and a whole heap of gear, he also found his fuel burn “unbelievable”. Trolling at 6.5 knots, the 270hp diesel was using just 5.5 LPH while steaming at 25 knots used just 27-30 LPH, or approx just 1.2 litre per nautical mile.
Clean platform Although Macca’s first love is obviously big game, he clearly enjoys other pursuits such as snapper fishing and diving, too. To accommodate these, Cold Steel has a large, fully-enclosed platform, protected by a substantial black cage-like pushpit.

PUREKRAFT 770 DIESEL
Both he and Jarrod are very proud that literally nothing drains back onto this platform; not the cockpit, not the large, custom baitboard (which both drain under the platform and straight into the water) and definitely not the four tuna tubes. These latter are instead sited in the aft portion of the side decks, a pair per side, and serviced from a sea chest in the engine bay. Accompanying these on each side are three Exploding Fish multi-directional rod holders. There is also a single fixed holder on port for the dredge boom. The side decks have also been designed to accommodate Macca’s 7m outriggers so they can lie there, secured, while the boat is passagemaking. On the port side of the transom is a pull out shower which is long enough to use on the platform for divers and on the starboard side of the bait station to service the small sink there. It is connected to a hot water cylinder underneath in a special locker that also houses the vessel’s various pumps. All pump lines are double glanded for safety. The custom bait station has two hard plastic inset boards with tackle drawer under, that small sink on the starboard side and Purekraft’s trademark bottle opener in the front. In keeping with the owner’s love of broadbill fishing, there is also waxed thread and trace material on its own spool in the drawer. On the bait station’s aft edge are the obligatory rod and drink holders, along with knife insets and a rubber bung to hold stitching needles. The live baitwell lives under the starboard access step to the platform and again drains directly into the ocean. The accessway also houses a push button control panel for the boat’s various pumps, eliminating the need to switch these on and off from helm station. This “run things from the cockpit if possible” philosophy is also in play with a cockpit helm station, in its own locker, in the starboard side deck. Often seen on much larger vessels but rarely on one of this size, it includes both a gear/throttle lever and an autopilot control module. In another clever touch, the drink holder in the hatch cover is

replicated below with the former fitting snugly into the latter so that refreshments can be close at hand regardless of whether the remote station is in use or not.
Clever idea While for many, the loss of valuable cockpit space due to the inboard’s intrusion would be too high a price to pay, Jarrod and Macca have turned this into something of a positive. Covered, like the cockpit, the platform, the side decks and foredeck with SeaDek, it can act as both a workbench and a viewing/ fishing platform. It can also house at least some of the owner’s numerous rods while cruising to and from those fishing spots. Fitted with an astonishing 16 alternately spaced rod holders, it has been designed to accommodate both bent and straight butt rod bases positioned, when all in place, so as to present a type of arch over the engine cover. This keeps these essential pieces of the ship’s armoury close at hand should a fin or workup be sighted while also ensuring that they are not in anyone’s way and that passage to the transom or platform is not obstructed. While, on most boats, the aft area of the hardtop is used mainly to house a rocket launcher and perhaps some cockpit lights, on Cold Steel, the area is far more feature-packed. For a start, the rocket launcher contains 14 rod holders instead of the usual 6 or 8. On each of the outer edges, Purekraft have installed large integral towing point-like hooks. Uncertified to 1000lb these are there to help pull
in the outsized fish Macca is confident of catching. Also mounted on the trailing edge of the hardtop is a Garmin VIRB camera. Connected to a powered mount, it can not only record the action taking place in the cockpit and “out the back”, it also relays a real time feed directly to Cold Steel’s twin Garmin 12” MFD screens. As anyone who has game fished knows, the sport can involve hours of aft-facing wave gazing. With this set up, at least some of that time can be spent looking forward and watching the screen, a real bonus when fishing short-handed. Another feature in this area is powered teaser reel mounted on the underside of the hardtop on the port side. Alongside is a small opening in the side bulkhead through which the teaser line runs, ready to quickly connect to the outrigger. Power has also been supplied to the matching

site on starboard in case Macca decides to add one there, too. On port side bulkhead there is a handilyplaced EPIRB and a cradle for the Garmin Gesture Control autopilot remote. This unit, again strategically placed for instant access, enables a quick course change should some attractive activity be spotted on a different heading. The skipper simply grabs the remote, points it in the direction of the activity and pushes a button. The autopilot instantly responds and the boat heads over for a closer look.
Pure Purekraft Cold Steel’s seating plan is typical Purekraft. Although, at first glance, it looks like a standard king/queen setup, it’s a lot more sophisticated than that. On the starboard seat, the aft squab extends to produce a comfortable recliner. Under this is space for a substantial chilly bin:

either a standard 150-litre or, for easier access, a 110-litre one on a trolley. On port, this space is used to house a powered Waeco 95-litre fridge freezer. There is another hidden gem too: a 2-burner gas cooktop lives under the main passenger seat. It comes with its own LED light and is supplied by a gas bottle in a vented locker in the side bulkhead. The electronics package is, as one would expect on a boat this fully-featured, a comprehensive one based around the twin screens that occupy the entire width of the dash. There is, in fact, very little of the dash that is not covered with a screen, a gauge, a switchboard or a piece of equipment. Included are a standard set of Hyundai gauges, complimented by a custom made Gear Smart temperature probe that monitors the fluid temperature in the leg; and control panels for StressFree drum winch the Zipwake automatic trim tabs and the Fusion stereo. This latter, connected to a powerful Wet Sounds system, comes with its own LED lighting controls and massive subwoofer that dominates the forward bulkhead in the cabin. There are also side and rear mounted high output LED marine underwater lights and the electronic weaponry includes twin
thru-hull 1kW transducers as well as a keel mounted GT51 side scanning transducer. The cabin with its bulkhead to bulkhead squabs obviously sleeps three (as it did on that trip to Hicks Bay) and has its own toilet. It also has a set of 7 Dubro rod holders in the ceiling and holders under the side lockers for Macca’s swordfish rigs. On most rigs, the foredeck and top of the hardtop are utilitarian places but little is as usual on this vessel. As well as the light bars and spotlights the forward section of the hardtop is flat, designed to be stood on and used, and even has a pair of drink holders to help ward off dehydration. The foredeck, too, is purposely flat, designed for both fishing and baiting and protected by double-height bow rails. It, too, has a brace of drink holders and is reached by an ergonomically safe passageway from the cockpit.
Summary At 7.7m, Cold Steel is Purekraft’s largest boat yet. It again illustrates that Jarrod Hall and his team of fellow naval architects are surely some of the most innovative and creative young marine designers around. Having spent time with him on Cold Steel, it is obvious that owner Macca, a vastly experienced skipper and big game fisherman, is “over the moon” with his new vessel.

TACKLE TIME CLEAN GEAR WITH NO CRAP So here we are at the tail end of winter, and over the previous months, only the super hard or the totally mad are out fishing. Sure, there are some beautiful calm days in winter when the saner of us can get out, and the bonus is that fishing around the Hauraki Gulf has been reasonably good. Now with Spring upon us and the thought of some great fishing in the last quarter of the year, why not take some time to do a bit of tackle maintenance. I’m sure after a winter of hard work, all of your tackle could do with a bit of TLC, which will include rods, reels, knives plus tackle boxes and their contents. If you haven’t done much maintenance before here are a few tips on how to go about it. ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #20
By Paul Walker
REELS
Reels come in two basic styles, fixed spool or spin and the overhead. Older reels like older cars aren’t too hard to service if your mechanically minded and have had some experience with reel servicing. The modern reels like modern cars are complicated in there design and build and should be left to the professionals to service. There are tricks to pulling them apart and putting them back together, and if you don’t know what you’re doing and have a go, you could be in deep and expensive dodo. So leave it to the pros to service your reels. Most tackle shops can help with this either in-house or sending your reels to the brand suppliers service centre or an independent serviceman. We hear a few fishos saying, “Hell for the money these things cost they shouldn’t need servicing”. However, bear in mind that very few, if any reels are waterproof. Only the very top end have stainless gears, with the rest have varying quality levels of alloy or brass. Then all the bearings will fail if they get wet. Considering that reels are used in the harshest climate on the planet, my advise is you should service them annually.
128
WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ
Poorly maintained gear from the braid to the rod tip could result in this pic having a catastrophic ending.
Spraying your tackle with an inhibitor like CRC Tackle Guard is good insurance.
Once you get your reel serviced it makes sense to re-spool with either new mono or braid, and you can save a bit of money here by top shooting. As usually only the top 150m of line ever gets used, that’s generally all you need to replace. Get the tackle shop to pull off that amount, tie on the new stuff to the remaining mono or braid and reload the spool. It’s incredible how much damage that top 100m gets over a season, so don’t trust it, replace it.
On returning from fishing, DO NOT spray your reels down with the hose when washing the boat. Hitting them with a highpressure hose just pushes the salt into the reel and starts the rot all over again. You should just lightly dribble the hose over them. Make sure your drag is done uptight, but best to wipe them down with a warm wet cloth and when dry spray them with a corrosion inhibitor such as Inox, CRC tackle guard, or WD40. If one of your reels goes underwater get it back for servicing the next day if possible, otherwise it may get too expensive to repair. Another tip is if you fish with a spin reel, the bail arm roller on these reels gets a lot of water inside as the line gets wound back on to the spool, so the bearing inside the roller needs extra attention. Spray an inhibitor regularly into this bearing and make sure it’s turning. Back the drags off, before you store the reel, as if you leave them compressed they won’t work smoothly next time. Store them somewhere dry, and they will be ready to go when you are.
ONGOING CARE
Now your reels are back to A1 condition again try to protect them from saltwater as much as possible. I never travel with my rods and reels in the rod holders or rocket launchers. I keep them on the bunks inside the cabin completely away from salt spray. Not always possible if you have an open boat, but they should be somewhere where they have the least chance of getting salt spray on them.

Rods are best stowed away from salt spray, something that is not always possible if they are kept in a rocket launcher.
RODS
One other thing you may like to consider is covering the butt section eva foam grips on with black heavy duty heat shrink wrap which is available at most big hardware or electrical stores. This stuff makes the rod butts almost bulletproof and well worth putting on. If you want to maintain your rods and reels in good condition, then after every use spray your rods down with the hose on returning from fishing, watching out for those reels and dry spray the guides with an inhibitor.
Rods are somewhat easier to check over and clean up than reels. You can hit them with high pressure. In fact, the harder, the better. Just be careful not to drown the reel if it’s still on the rod, so maybe best to take it off first. If you’re a bait user, it’s pretty hard not to get the rod grips covered in muck over a season, so while the rod is still wet from hosing get a bucket of hot soapy water and give the grips a dam good scrub. While you’re at it just check the reel seat on the rod is nice and tight and not moving at all. Now we move to the guides. Even a minute hair crack in a ceramic guide will shred that new line you’ve just put on your reel. Check all the guides one by one. If you think there may be a cracked guide, you can test it by running some cotton wool through it. If it has a crack, the wool will catch in the break. Should you find a cracked or missing ceramic guide, the cost of repair is about $20-$30 per guide depending on the size. Tips are about $15. While on a good quality rod even a few guides may be worth repairing, on a cheaper one it may be better to put your money into a new and better rod. I like to keep the rod blank clean and looking pristine, and again something g like Inox will polish the blank up like new. I also spray the guides and clean them with an old toothbrush.
THE TACKLE BOX
As I write this section, it’s pouring down outside, so days like this are the perfect time to get into your shed or garage and clean out your tackle box. Clear some space on the bench or floor and tip the whole dam thing upside down and shake out the contents. Over the years we tend to buy all sorts of tackle bits and pieces, stuff we have seen in a tackle shop and thought it might work. Truth is most of these purchases end up never getting used. So now is the time to harden up and chuck out all that crap. You will need to throw away anything that is showing signs of rust and make room in your tackle box for the gear that you use. If you’re like me and fish with lures as well as bait you might want to consider using two tackle boxes. Having a tackle box dedicated to either style sure makes things easier. With bait fishing maybe try pre-tying a range of traces at home. I tend to use stray line traces about 800mm long with a swivel at one end chosen hook at the other with different weight sinkers sliding in between. If you put them into small ziplock plastic bags, this saves a lot of time on the water when the bites hot and you’re into the fish. For a days’ fishing, you don’t need hundreds of hooks and great piles of sinkers and swivels. Just take what you need for the day and keep all the bulk stuff at home. For me, a bait box only needs a range of pre-tied traces, about a dozen mixed sized hooks, about the same mixed weight sinkers and swivels. Plus a small spool of trace line, one packet of bait flies, a couple of different coloured snapper flasher rigs, one casting, one trolling kahawai lure, a small bait knife, a pair of long nose pliers, and
Dismantling a fishing reel is best left to the experts.

Set your tackle boxes up with what is required and make sure all the crap and rusty hooks are removed.
Rusty hooks should be tossed in the bin.
maybe a small first aid kit. That should get most of you through the day or a weekend. As for a lure box, mine has three plastic pull out trays plus three pockets and a top storage area. The top tray has a mixture of soft bait jig heads, the second tray has slow jigs, and the bottom tray poppers and kingie jigs. The top storage is full of soft bait tails and small tools, with the pockets filled with fluorocarbon leader, spare spools, sunglasses, sunscreen etc.
TOOLS
There are many grades of stainless steel and very few fishing knives, pliers, line cutters, iki spikes, etc. are made from top grades of stainless, so over a season these tools will gather some surface rust. The solution is simply to use some hot water in a bucket and give these tools a good scrub with a soapy steelo pad. You will be amazed at how they clean up. When dry give them all a good spray with something like corrosionx and the jobs done.
CONCLUSION
Maintaining all your tackle over winter not only keeps all that expensive gear up to scratch but also sort of keeps us in touch with fishing when the weathers crap and we can’t get out. Give this maintenance a go, and you may find it enjoyable therapy, and when the fishing comes on, you’ll be ready to go. Good luck.
If you are going to hose down your reel, then make sure it’s a light spray without too much water pressure.

TAIN RIDE OW 40 PLUS YEARS LATER, Offshore may be a relatively new player in the aluminium boat market, but the brand comes with an impressive legacy that goes back many years. Built by Offshore Boats NZ, the Offshore 650 was developed by established Whangarei marine identity, Jonathan Barlow, who says he was frustrated that he couldn’t find the right alloy boat that gave him what he considered the perfect ride. “I was selling another brand at the time, and I was not happy promoting it to my customers as I didn’t believe they rode as well as I felt they should. So along with established naval architect, Alan Walker, myself and Perin Clark we set about designing and building our brand”, says Jonathan. The first model, released in early 2019,
N
to come from that collaboration was the Offshore 650, which is available in both Hardtop and Pro Dive versions. While I had seen the Offshore 650 prior at a regional boat show, I didn’t take a lot of time to look over it. My mistake. I should have been onto the Offshore brand a lot earlier, but then along came lockdown and Covid-19 and the chance to get to review the brand stretched out even further. But finally, on a cold winters day in mid-July the opportunity came and I was able to review both models out of the picturesque Tutukaka Harbour. First impressions were that there was something more on offer than your typical production alloy trailer boat of a similar size. Like the lyrics in the song, I could sense that these were indeed mystery ships with concepts that others have missed.

HADN’T THOUGHT OF THAT While both models share the same 6.5m hull design, the layouts are obviously different. The 650 Pro Dive is as the name suggests, predominantly set up for serious diving and fishing. It’s not a family boat and doesn’t try to be. The solid alloy screen, big cuddy, open cockpit plan, soft top fold down bimini and minimal seating are all purposedesigned for the tasks the boat will be used for. You have a choice of seating styles, with our test boat featuring a couple of unique custom designed counter levered bolster seats. They are surprisingly comfortable and can also lift out and turned to face aft. They even leave the entire cockpit sole free of any impediments and more space for all your dive gear.
ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #20

OFFSHORE 650 HARD TOP & PRO DIVE
The 650 Hardtop is fitted a pair of with fully adjustable Hi Tech Elite helm seats and like the bolsters in the Pro Dive, are mounted on counter levered bases. If you want to add more seating, there is provision for a couple of 110-litre split-lid chilly bins with cushions under either forward seat. You can also clip on a 1.8m hammock from the transom through to the forward seats to give you an extra berth. The Hardtop provides 2m headroom, plus has sliding side windows with a 6mm positive curved safety glass single piece forward screen from Glassshape. U-Dek finishes off the cockpit sole nicely, with a 200-litre fuel tank and wet storage locker down the centre with the spaces either side used for buoyancy. There is also provision for a 40-litre fresh water tank.
TRANSOM OPTIONS Being an alloy boat, you do have some options as to how you would like the transom configured. Both our Offshore 650 Hardtop and 650 Pro Dive had a port side opening to the full boarding platform, with a live bait tank built into the step. Battery storage is under the transom, and you have the option of a basic drop-in bait board, or you can go for a multipurpose custom hinged bait board from Offshore. This features
six-rod holders, a drawer for a small gas cooker, sink unit and fold-out bait station/ table. Dashboards in both boats are customisable, to accommodate all your necessary electronics and switches. The Hardtop was fitted with a flush mounted Simrad NSS16 EVO3, MFD, and the Pro Dive a bracket mounted Simrad 12” MFD. Lenco tabs, Fusion sound system and Maxwell winches are used on both boats. When it comes to the hardtop model, it’s certainly more of a multipurpose boat, with all the attributes for fishing, (bottom fishing or trolling lures) and the comforts and appointments you would want for family boating. While Jonathan says he can’t impress enough about how important the ride was when designing the hull, he also wanted something extra. Something that no one else had in a similar-sized alloy boat. Take, for example, the optional sliding side drawers under the extra wide side coamings for your fishing tackle, knives, soft baits etc. However, it doesn’t stop there, with four more drawers under the side trays in the cabin of the Hardtop, neatly marked; First Aid, Flares, Essentials and Tools. “We looked at the void under the coamings and thought why not utilise the space, so the drawer idea developed. It works extremely well, and it’s something we will offer in all our models”, says Jonathan. Then there are the small things like a gas strut to hold up the live bait tank
lid, rather than a hinge and clip. The side trays are wide enough to stow dive bottles, and there is even the addition of U-Dek padding behind to stop the bottles rattling or moving. It’s things like that that illustrate the extra attention to detail throughout the boats. It is more likely that you will only use the cuddy cabin of the Pro Dive as a place to stow gear, so Offshore have added high floor railings to stop gear come back into the cockpit. There are a pair of pipe storage trays above and a large Cule hatch for forward access to the flat deck area. The 650 Hard Top provides a more useable space to overnight, with 1.9m long berths, space for an optional head, plus side trays with the drawers as mentioned before. Adding that extra touch of class, the interior linings are vinyl covered panels rather than stickon fabric—a nice touch. There is also dedicated rod storage under the side squabs, and you also have the option of a fixed rear bulkhead and lockable door. If the weather cuts up rough and you need to hang onto something, then there are plenty of places provided on the Offshore 650 with 32mm gauge pipe used throughout the boat. Again, heavier than a lot of the competitors, but they give you a secure feeling when you need to get a grip!
It’s all about the ride, the ride, the ride.

HEAVY IS A BONUS Something unique to the Offshore 650 is the 8mm plate hull being standard and not an option. I usually see boats like this with 4-6mm sheet, so 8mm is right up there. 4mm is used on the sides, so the majority of the hull weight is down low, which attributes to the boats great ride. The hull is a conventional moderate vee, with an 18 deg transom, fine entry and turndown chines aft. All this makes the boat stable, with a soft and quiet ride. The 650 feels stiff, quiet and bump-free, all of which Jonathan wanted to achieve. I ran the boat in calm to moderate water
off Tutukaka and was impressed with the agility and handling of the boat. Had we had time, I would have been happy to run the 22nm all the way out to the Poor Knights Islands. Maybe next time when I hope to get back and review the currently under construction 750 Hard Top, the next addition to the Offshore stable. Power choices are any single outboard from 150hp to 200hp, with the Pro Dive running a Yamaha 150 and the Hardtop a Mercury Pro XS 200 V8. conservative 4000 rpm @ 24 knots and the fuel useage is only 23 lph and the range increases to around 140nm. The 650 Hardtop ran to 42 knots @ 6000 rpm, using 73 lph, with a range of around 75 nm. Again being a little lighter on the throttle will see 4000 rpm @ 30 knots , will result in 27 lph and a range increase to 200nm.

SOUTHERN TT 756
Ultimate Commuter BY FREDDY FOOTE
Amphibious boats have been part of boating landscape for over 15-years now, with growing numbers of builders adopting the technology and incorporating them into their model line-up. Freddy Foote checks out the Southern TT 756 from Southern Boats and Tectrax.Â
S
OUTHERN BOATS OUT OF MOSGIEL, IS THE LATEST KIWI ALLOY MANUFACTURER TO START PRODUCING AMPHIBIOUS OFFERINGS FOR THE NEW ZEALAND MARKET. THE RENOWNED ALLOY BUILDER HAS ELECTED TO PARTNER WITH TECTRAX; ALSO A KIWI COMPANY, AND ALSO THE ONLY ONE OFFERING AN ALLELECTRIC DRIVE SYSTEM FOR BOATS. Boaties wanting a traditional kiwi trailer boat, coupling it with amphibious technology is growing in popularity, and while it does come at a considerable cost, there are certainly some benefits to how they then go about their boating activities and use the boat.

All-electric? What is this technology, and how does it work? Designed and manufactured here in New Zealand, the Tectrax system is 100% electric. The first check is two years after purchase, and it can be done by a boat dealer or by Tectrax. Tectrax have several electric motor systems available, with the

TT 756 we see here fitted with the T3000 extended range (ER) system. The T3000 ER system has an expected run time of 35 minutes, assuming 30% soft sand or uphill, on flat asphalt, drive time is approximately 1hr and 5 minutes and expect a top speed fully loaded of 8km/hr on land. Using a standard electrical socket, re-charge time is two hours. The addition of the Tectrax T3000 ER system to the boat adds around 620kg to the weight of the boat. The electric motors are very powerful with high speed turned into high torque via a reduction gearbox, with power coming from a 72-volt battery.

Should you run the battery flat, the internal battery management system will protect the batteries and not allow them to be damaged. An easy to understand display keeps you fully informed on battery levels, however. While the system is electrically braked, each rear motor also has an integrated disc brake for safety, and all motors also have regenerative braking (re-charging the batteries) and all AWD along with traction control. Through a combination of chemical and mechanical seals along with design, the motors have an IP69 waterproof rating (total submersion). pumps, so there is no need for an additional motor on the deck.
LAYOUT
What you immediately notice about the TT 756 when you step aboard, is just how big it feels internally. It has noticeably high sides, which give an added feeling of security. This boat was built for a taller than average owner, so steps were taken in the design stage to make the cockpit sides higher for increased comfort and safety. Physically, the boat is big. The hull length is 7.5m, but with the addition of the platforms, it measures closer to 8.5m in length overall. Forward, there is a full lock-up cabin, and though it is a smaller space, with some of the forward area taken up by the Tectrax wheel, it is still more than ample for storage. There is also a toilet located under the forward Vee berth. Though the boat is not designed to be an overnighter,

some may be able to bunk down in there for a night depending on how tall you are. The helm is generously well appointed and finished. Centre is a large Furuno multi-function display, which integrates with the Tectrax control system. Above that are the Yamaha engine instruments while to the right is the control for the Maxwell anchor winch, wiper switches and Zipwake trim control. To the left are controls and switches for the Tectrax, while below is the VHF, and Fusion stereo system. At the helm itself, like other Southern’s the seat is finished in marine vinyl and features a lift-up bolster, with a footrest below. The throttle is well-positioned within easy reach, and a sliding window provides ventilation while underway. The general seating arrangement consists of king/ queen seats on both port and starboard sides. Traditional storage options here are a limited as space is taken up with the Tectrax technology which sees a couple of electronic boxes and hydraulic systems housed under the seats. In the spacious cockpit, it has high extra high gunwales with thigh padding to assist anglers – although, in the case of this boat, you could describe it as waist-high padding! Double cockpit shelving takes care of storage for rods and like the rest of the cockpit and top decks, are lined with UDEK foam to help prevent knocks and scratches. A low profile walkthrough is featured in the starboard

corners, which leads through to a boarding platform with ladder. In the transom itself, there is a live bait tank complete with a viewing window on the port side, while a bait board is centre, with various other storage lockers below which store engine batteries and house the onboard systems for engines fuel filters and pumps etc. Underway, the TT 756 feels big, and it is. With the added weight of the Tectrax system, it has a tow weight of 3300kg. The extra weight is noticeable, which isn’t a bad thing. What you gain in weight, gives the boat a ride even better in the moderate

to rough water. The added weight, which mostly is down quite low, also makes the boat extremely stable. I was expecting a drop in performance, not so. With the Yamaha F300 fourstroke on the transom, the big TT 756 still delivered a respectable 35 knots at 5800rpm. At a cruise of 18 knots at 3500 rpm, the Yamaha fourstroke was using 35.1L/H The TT 756 was also fitted with a Zip Wake trim system which was fantastic, it is a big heavy boat, and it is susceptible to windage; however, the Zip Wake system allows you to make quick trim quick adjustments on the go which are almost instant. Navigating onto land is a simple process. Navigate towards your chosen landing spot, lower your wheels, then when the wheels touch the bottom, engage forward drive, and turn off your outboard motor. Checking the direction of your forward wheels and terrain in front of you is as easy as viewing the navigation screen which has a feed from the camera located above the front wheel. Overall, one of the best amphibious boats I’ve ever tested.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #20
P O P U L A R 6 - 7 M B OATS
SPOILED FOR CHOICE LOOKING FOR AN ALLOY BOAT SOMEWHERE IN THE 6M-7M RANGE THEN CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE POPULAR OPTIONS.
Aluminium boats come in many different sizes, styles and layouts, and when there are over 60 brands to pick from, so finding the one that best suits your needs can be a daunting task. If you are looking for a new or pre-owned alloy boat, there is so many to choose from unless you already have a good idea about a particular brand and model, there is a lot of guesswork, and you might regret the decision you made. We decided to ask some of the leading production aluminium boat builders what their most popular models of 2019 and into 2020 are. While they indeed varied a lot in size, one thing was quite noticeable, it was 6m to 7m that made up the bulk of the sales. Boats between 5m-6m were undoubtedly right up there and even the entry-level tinnies under 5m, but it was 6m-7m in the cabin, centre console and hardtop variants that are proving the most popular. Boats over 7m were also helping to fill the order books, especially around 7.5m hardtops. Some manufacturers now specialise in the bigger trailer boats and models around 8m-9m are still popular, albeit at a far lesser number than those found in the 6m-7m bracket. Perhaps price may have something to do with that, as much as storage and towing considerations.
ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #20
So what is available in 6m-7m? A lot! You have the choice of open runabouts, centre consoles, mid-cabin, cabin, cuddy cabin and full hardtops. While over 95% will be outboard powered, some are being built with petrol and diesel sterndrives. Generally, you will see a single outboard 150-200hp. However, because a lot of the larger engines may only vary in horsepower due to a different ‘electronic chip’ and still weigh the same, it’s not uncommon to see up to 225hp-250hp on a 6-7m boat. If you are considering a boat of this size, then do your homework and find out what suits your requirements. Centre consoles offer a massive fishing platform, while hardtops give you that allweather protection and cabin/cuddy cabin boats provide a bit of both. Some manufacturers utilise the same hull as the basis for different models, such as centre console, cabin or hardtop. You also have the choice of a conventional plate boat or a pontoon construction, and both have their following. Kiwi alloy boat builders lead the world in pontoon boat design as well as hardtops and both enjoy good export sales. Check out our buyers guide to some of the most popular aluminium boats in the 6-7m sector.

BLUEWATER 6.5 PORTOFINO HARDTOP | LOA: 6.80M | BEAM: 2.50M | D/R: 19 DEG Blue Water Boats, supply a full range of modifications to suit your needs from changing soft tops to hard tops or designing and building a full range of bimini tops. Custom paint jobs, upholstery and seating arrangements can all be customised. The standard cabin has 2m bunk lengths, with an infill provision, excellent storage options and overhead access hatch. All Bluewater hulls are built to Maritime New Zealand commercial survey standards. The hardtop provides good visibility all round through the 6mm tinted and toughened glass windows and has a generous overhang aft to shelter the cockpit. The aft most underfloor stowage area stretches back to about half of the Portofino area and stops at a bulkhead. You have the option of various live bait tank styles and transom arrangements. The 6.5 Portofino is certainly a boat designed for fishermen. www.bluewaterboats.co.nz
DNA 630 XHT
HARDTOP | LOA: 6.30M | BEAM: 2.27MM D/R: 20 DEG DNA’s 6.3m hardtop is a serious fishing diving platform and when configured right can also make an overnight excursion with the family possible. It’s big enough to comfortably fish four adults. Front curved glass screens provide excellent vision capability berth option enables seating and storage forward. Seats are standard with open bases to allow a 90L ice box/Esky to be slid underneath maximising deck room when fishing and doubling an extra seat when underway. Tapering pontoons a sleek appearance and non-pounding ride. High sides give great protection from spray and provide ample storage around the boat for all types of gear meaning a clutter free deck and more room to fish. Computer design enables the boats to be studied and tested in depth while still in the 3D model stage, also allowing the boats to be fully customised. The 630 XHT is one of four boats in the hardtop XHT range. www.dnaboats.co.nz
BLUEFIN 665 LOCK UP
HARDTOP | LOA: 6.65M | BEAM: 2.50M | D/R: 17 DEG When Sportcraft Boats released the Bluefin 665 HT back in 2009, they knew they had a winner. While sales have remained steady, even through the GFC, it is the 665 Lock Up version that is now attracting a lot of attention. The Bluefin range has always been pitched at the ‘mid budget’ buyer, and while they are not perhaps ‘blinged out’ as some of the competition, they certainly lack nothing when it comes to quality construction and on water performance. Those familiar with the Bluefin 665 Offshore will see very little difference between that and the Lock Up externally
WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ
apart for the obvious full bulkhead at the rear of the wheelhouse, but look closer and there are quite a few differences. The 665 Lock Up retains much of the 665 cockpit and forward cabin layout, but it is in the wheelhouse where you find the main difference. Also while the hull is unchanged, the side decks have been narrowed by 100mm per side, offering a wider cabin beam, yet without compromise to the safety and security if you need to walk around the side decks. www.sportcraftboats.co.nz

INNOVISION IV616 EXPLORER
HARDTOP | LOA: 6.25M | BEAM 2.50M | D/R: 18 DEG Innovision boats have their own distinctive look and have been developed to produce the softest ride possible. Some of the key differences are a longer waterline length than boats of a similar size, a fine bow entry and a high bow profile with more volume. The plumb (vertical) bow gives the hull the finest entry of all trailer boats on the New Zealand market. It also increases the water line length when compared to conventional bow designs, which means our boats ride like a 1-1.5m longer boat. The combination of these two factors greatly reduces the slamming and pitching motion when in a nasty chop or ocean swell, making our boats comfortable and safe. The IV616 also has an extended waterline at the transom for added stability at rest and a large cabin space with 1.85m V bunk capable of overnighting. Innovision boats come in four styles: Explorer (Hard Top), Sports (Soft Top), Active (Centre Console/Cabin) and Sedan (Cruising) that all come in a range of sizes. www.innovisionboats.com
FC BOATS 700 HT HARDTOP | LOA: 7.05M | BEAM 2.50M | D/R: 19 DEG
The FC 700HT is a wide body boat with a pronounced raised shearline and reputation for rough water performance. FC Boats have constantly improving the FC 700HT and now with 6mm hull, 5mm sides and 4mm cabin the ride and handling have been further enhanced. Impressive looks and practical layout in either a full lock up cabin or open hardtop will depend on your individual requirements. With full game rigging options and being able to walk and fish from the stern cage to the flat bow platform gives you a 7m boat with so much more.

There are only a handful of manufacturers doing walkaround mid-cab style alloy hardtops, and Rotorua based Orca Marine is one of them. If you like the versatility of a centre console, but also want the added protection of a hardtop, then a midcab walkaround like this Orca 6.2 Sportfisher is a great choice. The 6.2 Sportfisher retains many of the features you would expect to find in a conventional hardtop model if not more. One of the big things is that you still have a full sized cabin and you don’t loose too much room with the walk around. There is in fact still 1.9m of bunk space, which provides overnighting capabilities should someone wish to. The cockpit features a side shelf on either side which provides storage for gaffs, rods, etc. Making your way forward to the foredeck, you can walk around the wheelhouse without ‘shuffling’. The sides are high, and the bow rail makes you feel safe while still giving you enough room to be able to cast out baits or play a fish. www.orcaengineering.co.nz
