ome of us aspire to own bigger boats. Ones we can go offshore, chase bigger fish, troll all day or stay out overnight with the comforts that are not practical in a smaller trailer boat. A 7.5m hardtop, such as the Surtees 750 with twin Yamaha 150s that is up for grabs as the gate prize at this year’s Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show is a case in point. Who wouldn’t want to own such an ultimate beast, that will take you out into the offshore fishing grounds with a few hardcore fishing mates or provide a very cosy and comfortable weekender for the family? The only concerns that come from owning such a rig is towing, storage and launching. Now, all that can be easily overcome with the right tow vehicle or dry stacking, so they are not an issue. However, sometimes having a big trailer boat does have its downside and I recently had discussions with two friends of mine who own bigger alloy boats and for reasons wanted something smaller as well. One owns a 10m Everyman with twin outboards which he keeps on an Airberth. It’s a fabulous boat which I have fished from many times, but it’s not something that you make a spur of the moment decision to take out. Things need to be planned and it all takes time to get in the water. It’s also 20 mins from his house to the marina. And then there’s all the cleaning to do after. While he doesn’t mind all that, he does live 1 min from the water and was looking for something he or his son could launch quickly and easily on the beach. He needed a small boat to go fishing, towing biscuits and generally getting the grandkids involved with boating at an early age. You can never teach them too young and I can well remember taking my oldest son Carl boating at around six months and that was trip in a 5m open runabout from Whangapoua to the Great Mercury Island. He must have liked it because he slept most of the way. But back to my mate. After looking around, he decided on a 3.9m RIB, with a 30hp Suzuki, which could be towed behind a 4WD quadbike and kept in the carport at home. His son also wanted a boat that he could take home to his place in Auckland. Now he has the best of both, the Everyman for the serious fishing fix and overnighting and the RIB for some quick and hassle-free boating fun. I also had a call from a friend who owns a 7m McLay hardtop and loves it to bits, but also needed something smaller. He too didn’t want to sell the big boat and wanted to stay with both an alloy boat and if possible another McLay. Well, he found what he wanted in the McLay Fortress 4.8. After pouring over my own McLay 4.8 Fortress and going for a run, he put the order in. I like the fact he has gone for the big tiller steer engine (I have an 80hp Merc and he has gone for the 90hp) as the boat handles the power well. He has also got the builders to make a lot of small but practical changes to the boat to suit his needs. It’s going to be a great little boat that will be used a lot from his beach house up North and like my mate with the RIB, will certainly see him do a lot more family boating.

MARCO LAUNCH 950 SOUWESTER
Morrinsville based Marco Boats has recently launched one of their biggest boats to date, the 950 Souwester. At 10m LOA and with a mean of 3m it is right on the cusp of being a trailer boat, but the owner does use it as such. It is a seriously good weekender and has all the necessary appointments for overnighting such as the galley, head and shower, two 70 litre chest freezers and a 30-litre fridge drawer. There are berths to accommodate four adults or three adults and
two children. The wheelhouse area flows through to the cockpit via bi-folding doors and a pillar-less electric drop down window. The 950 Souwester is also fitted with Raymarine Axiom MFDs and Humphrees auto trim tabs. 600L of fuel feed a 370hp D6 Volvo which is enough to push the 5500kg vessel to a top speed of 35Knots. The highly regarded Australian custom built Moda range of power cats and monohulls is now available in New Zealand. The company already have an affiliation with New Zealand as all their boats over 7m are designed by Christchurch based Scott Robson design. The hulls have been designed with highperformance attributes, true pedigree and solid construction. Moda boats combine functionality with strength while incorporating modern styling. When ordering a custom Moda boat, the process is slightly different to the normal off the shelf production type. As each boat is built to suit the customer and so almost every package is different. However, one thing they all have in common is the highest quality possible in materials, equipment and construction.
The range of monohulls and power cats are build as a strong boat using Marine grade 5083 structural aluminium where ever possible. All the boats come standard with AMSA approved foam flotation, fuel tank safety cells, external fuel system breathers, good storage points for safety equipment, bilge pumps, and double insulated electrical wiring. Moda offer two powercats the 8000 series and the 9500 series with a 10500 Centre Console model under development .The powercats are true off shore craft with stepped deep vee hulls with high tunnels and are building an excellent reputation for rough water handling with stability. The cat models have a double berth and toilet forward and feature a high level custom fitout to each owners specification with a level of finish not normally seen on this
type of craft . The 8000 is also available in the Gamefisher Series doubling as a deep sea fishing platform that also fulfils the requirements of a family sports bridge cruiser. There is also an 8500 Walkaround and the latest model, the 9500 Express Series. Moda also offers two power cats, the 8000 Series and the 9500 Series which both carry all the best attributes of the monohulls, but with performance and rough water rated catamaran hull design. Having seen a large market shift from cuddy cabin boats to hardtops McLay believe the time is right to introduce a smaller hardtop to their range. At the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, they will be showing for the first time their new 571 Sportsman Hardtop, which they expect to be a big seller for next season. The boat will have a turnkey package prize, complete with trailer and 90hp Mercury 4 stroke outboard for under $60,000. INNOVISION ADD IV555 EXPLORER Innovision recently added the IV555 Explorer to their expanding range of unique alloy boats. The 555 is the third and smallest model in the Explorer range and joins the 606 and 656. The standout feature of the boat is the plum bow that creates a super fine ‘V’ entry angle. The purpose of this is to reduce the boat from pitching. The boat is very dry as the large downturned chine deflects spray. The chines also assist the flood chamber in creating a very safe and stable platform when at rest. Standard features include a large low-level Portofino transom that creates a whole new area that is great for diving, swimming off or even fishing. There are options for a single or dual walk-through transom to give you easy access to an expansive cockpit. Like all Innovision boats, the new IV555 offers unprecedented stability without sacrificing the super smooth ride from the unique bow design. The company build three styles which include the Explorer (hardtop), Sports (sports top) and Active (centre console). They also provide a 10-year structural warranty on all models. s far as anyone can tell, there has never been a boat show prize like it. Not only in New Zealand or Australia but literally anywhere on the planet. Long time Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show exhibitors and sponsors have truly created something special for this year’s event: a Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize boat package that comes with a retail value of more than $207,000! At the core of the package is the flagship of the Surtees range: a fullyfeatured 750 Game Fisher Enclosed Cabin. Powering it along, at speeds up to 47 knots!, are twin Yamaha F150F (XCA) 2.8 litre 4-stroke outboards, complete with the latest electronic ‘fly-by-wire technology and swinging Yamaha Reliance SDS (Shift Dampening System) 13 ¼ x 19P polished stainless steel propellers. And then there are the extras: the Epic double-axle braked trailer, the suite of Garmin electronics worth upwards of $10,000, the Balex Auto Boat Loader, the Lone Star drum remotely-controlled windlass, the Hella LED lighting package, the outriggers, the list goes on. If it sounds impressive on paper, in real life it looks even better. In its temporary home at Andrew Carlson’s Fishing Boats NZ on Auckland’s North Shore, the Grand Prize boat dwarfs the other vessels on show. Resplendent in its burnt orange exterior paint scheme it has already, in the short time it has been there, attracted a huge amount of attention — and several “I’ll buy it on the spot” offers! (Especially, apparently from those with similarly-coloured vehicles keen to have a matching set.) With a trailerable weight of around 2.5 tonne and capable of shipping an impressive 300-litres of fuel, this is not a rig for the family sedan. However, thanks to those twin axles and the independent breaking, our tow vehicle (a Ranger SUV) has little trouble transporting it safely across the Auckland Harbour Bridge to the Outboard Boating Club. Once there, there are, likewise, few issues with launching this substantial 7.5-metre vessel, thanks largely to Balex automatic launching and retrieving system. The trailer is backed into the water, the winch and safety catch are released and, from his position at the helm, Fishing Boats NZ’s Sam Tucker leans out the window and presses the Balex remote. Down aft, the large rollers turn, the Grand Prize moves backwards and into the water, the tow vehicle drives away. Job done.

ONE TOUCH DIGITAL CONTROL
Fly-by-wire electronic control has been around for a while: on airplanes, in cars and on large vessels. It is still relatively new on trailer boats however and the novelty still delights. For a start, all one needs is a single finger. (There is a key — just one, even though there are two engines — but it is solely used to turn the whole system on.) One everyone is on board and ready to go, I simply push the single go button and both engines start simultaneously (there are also separate start buttons for each engine but these are generally only used when one wants to run just one at a time, when trolling for example). Although there two throttle controls, these too have been configured to run as a single unit, unless otherwise selected and the same applies to the trim. As we idle out to the breakwater, Sam explains that the proper name for this electronic “fly-by-wire” system is actually Yamaha DEC (Digital Electronic Control): it requires no mechanical remote control cables; throttle and shift operations are electrically controlled and the result is effortless control without cable friction. He’s not kidding. In the marina, I reverse around in the confined space using one engine in forward and one in reverse and switching between the two several times. There is none of that “thunk” sound as the levers go into and out of neutral and there is no jerkiness as we slowly increase revs up to the permitted 5 knots. Once clear of the confines of the breakwater, the throttles are thrown hard forward against their stops and the effect is breathtaking! The acceleration is both unbelievably smooth and incredibly powerful. It is like an enormous, unrelenting push in the back. One minute we are at displacement speed, seconds later we skidding across the water and heading for upwards of 40 knots.
Each Surtees comes complete with what Surtees call their SiQ technology package, Designed to improve both stability and handling. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

BOAT TEST
SURTEES 750 GAME FISHER ENCLOSED CABIN
The boat comes with a Lone Star drum winch.
The rear seat folds down for access to the batteries and out of the way when fishing.
Flanking the cabin door, a pair of drop-down windows. Moving up and down through the rev range is equally smooth. There are no discernable dead spots and the overall effect is, in many ways, more like turning a dial than using a traditional throttle. For our initial run down to the calm waters of Islington Bay, we have left the water ballast in Surtees trademark flooding keel (Anti-Roll™ ballast stability control) in place. This is done simply by keeping the aft gate () closed, rather than allowing it to open naturally as the boat moves onto the plane. (Anti-Roll™ and Anti-Roll Lock™ are part of the Surtees’ SiQ™ package, see panel). The result is a far smoother ride in the slight but sometimes sharp chop with the only downside a slight tendency to porpoise. A quick downward nudge on the trim quickly sorts this out. As we later discover on our ballast-less ride home, there is, somewhat surprisingly, very little cost, in either speed or fuel consumption for carrying this extra 530 litres of water in our keel. Our top speed drops just two knots and the increase in fuel burn is of a similarly insignificant amount. Monitoring our performance in these various modes is equally effortless thanks to the Yamaha CL7 multi-function colour display. A 7in touch screen, it is capable of monitoring up to four engines and six tanks through a single gauge, boasts internal Wi-Fi and is fully programmable.

BUILT TO FISH
A good friend of mine is fond of saying about his pride and joy: “It may be a fishing boat but it doesn’t need to look (nor smell) like one”. His words spring to mind as I gaze over the 750’s substantial cockpit. Nine geometric SeaDek anti-skid floor panels, grey with black edging, are separated by bare aluminium water channels, creating a sole that is both immensely practical and enormously attractive. This “work of art” effect is further enhanced with another three SeaDek panels on both coamings, each with its own drink and rod holders. Add another rod holder in each aft quarter, three in the Surtees baitboard, six up in the integral rocket launcher and a further four in a portable unit hanging off the starboard side locker (plus loads of space in the two wide side lockers) and there is enough stowage for even the most enthusiastic team’s weaponry. As the name implies, the 750 Game Fisher has been designed primarily to chase big fish. To that end, it boasts is a 300-litre fuel tank to get one out to those offshore islands, reefs and seamounts; there is a fullyplumbed, 800gph under-step live bait tank, complete with clear window; that Surtees baitboard mounted high above the transom; a set of 14’ Oceanblue outriggers; big wide coamings to rest on when the fishing is slow and a platform wide enough so one can comfortably stand between transom and engines.

In addition to being a great fishing platform, this package is a pretty effective overnighter.

In addition to being a great fishing platform, this package is a pretty effective overnighter, too. Occupying the for’ward port quarter of the cockpit is a seat module. In it is a handy sink, serviced by a faucet on the coaming and fed by an 80-litre fresh water tank. Over on starboard, an identical-looking unit, is home to an alcohol cooker. In the enclosed cabin, just through the twin powder-coating aluminium and glass doors, is the third part of the overnighting trifecta: an Engel 42-litre fridge, snugly positioned under the driver’s seat. Combine this with the sink and cooker, the large bunk space (especially with the infill in place) and the warmth of the enclosed cabin and a night or even a weekend away is not only possible but reasonably comfortable, too. At this stage, there is no toilet but this is an easy and relatively inexpensive addition. Because stowage is always at premium when staying away, Surtees have thoughtfully added pull-out drawers under both seat cabin seats and there is also a nifty shelf unit that pulls out from alongside the crew seat. This unit, the two drawers and the numerous open lockers on both sides of the enclosed cabin are all lined with frontrunner, too, so things stay put and quiet while underway. There is also stowage in a large underfloor locker (with two access hatches) between the seats and under the cabin squabs. Each of the latter comes with its own strap to hold it open while loading or accessing the items within. Both driver’s and crew’s seats are impressive units, too. Although hard mounted on the modules below, both are very well padded and come with hinge-able bolster for additional comfort when either stand or sitting. High returns behind the two bunks double as footrests and an aluminium track each side of the seat units is there for an optional drop-in seat.
opening windows on each side and, flanking the cabin door, a pair of drop-down windows. The dash arrangement has been well thought out, too, especially considering the generous amount of electronics and other equipment on board. The large 12” Garmin GPSMAP 7412 XSU MFD screen combines with the Yamaha digital panel directly below to ensure every bit of information one could possibly require is just a quick glance away. The former can be configured to show data from the GPS plotter, the down view or side view sonar and the radar, or any combination one wishes. Also close at hand are the two DC panels, the control unit for the Lone Star drum winch, a combined voltage gauge and double USB charging outlet, a fuel gauge, the single starter key and the single and two individual on/off buttons for the engines. Above are the Garmin VHF, the Fusion stereo unit and two of the four speakers (the other two are in the cockpit). There is also a handy red/white light in the ceiling (for night running), part of a comprehensive Hella LED lighting package that includes twin flood lights, under gunwale and bait tank lighting in the cockpit and a bright spotlight.
GREAT VISIBILITY
Visibility from both seats is superb. The offshore-ready windscreen is in three sturdy sections, each with its own Exalto wiper; there are a large

DRUM WINCHES ON A ROLL
One of the benefits of a drum winch is they are capable of handling more rode than you might otherwise get into your standard anchor locker.
A few years ago we ran a feature on drum winches and our listing included five brands and 22 models. Such has been the popularity of drum winches, our 2018 listing shows more than double that in both manufacturers and models. So why have drum winches become so popular? ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14

that has all changed They did a great job but they looked ugly and in many ways were very agricultural. The idea was right but the profile needed some refinement. It wasn’t too long before someone had the bright idea of recessing the drum winch into the anchor locker and below the deck profile. All of a sudden the drum winch gained acceptance, especially amongst the alloy boat manufacturers. The benefit they had over the fibreglass builders is they could easily adapt the anchor locker to accept the size of a drum winch and electric motor.
In 1995, Australian Dean Forster pioneered the trailer boat drum winch and while drum winches were not a new concept, it was Dean who perfected the application for small boats. His award-winning company Stressfree Marine is one of the world leaders in the manufacture and design of drum winches. It was, however, not an immediate success and it took about 5 years to ‘educate’ the Australian boat owners into the benefits of a drum winch. While the first trailer boat drum winches were seen as cumbersome arrangements mounted on the foredeck, today WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

more rode ( the warp & chain) than you might otherwise get into your standard anchor locker. When it comes to the anchor warp, you don’t have to stick with the conventional braided anchor rope. If you are out in the deeper water and need as much warp on the drum as possible, then some boat owners are using rope such as Dyneema or Spectra. This allows you to maintain the strength, due to the extremely high breaking strain rating and means you can drop down the size of the warp to 4mm or even 2mm. Most manufacturers offer drum winches with 12 or 24 volts sealed motors that can be mounted through a 360-degree arc, so you can adjust it to fit the space available. They are corrosion resistant and designed to stand the harsh salty environment of an anchor locker. Most of them today are built inside stainless steel housings to provide maximum corrosion protection. Drum winches draw around 25 - 30 amps and under load up to 60 amps, so it is recommended that dual batteries be installed. This is no different to a standard capstan style winch. To protect the motor, a circuit breaker will trip out if there is a power overload, such as getting your anchor stuck on the bottom. Drum winches vary from as light as 12 kg and as much as 170 kgs. If you compare a Maxwell RC6 winch, that weighs just 8 kg, with a max pull of 500kg and a capacity for 12mm rope and 6mm chain, with a similar capacity drum winch, they are up to three to four times heavier. However, some manufacturers present the weigh of their drum winch with the rode on, so it pays to check if you are not sure. Also, a low profile RC6 winch will set you back around $1300 to $1500, whereas a comparable drum winch will generally anywhere between $2000 to $3500. If you thought you could never get a drum winch into the anchor locker,
All About Space
Drum winches take space and when you are talking about an under 5.5m boat, the anchor locker volume isn’t generally that much. No problem for the traditional capstan/winch where you simply haul it all in by hand and stow it manually. You can always move the rode around and fill the space. Same goes for an auto winch, such as a Maxwell RC6 which takes all the hard work out of hauling in the anchor, but still means you have to physically tuck all the rode and chain into the locker. If you have a fully auto system, where you can do the business from the helm, then no problem, unless you have an unusually shallow locker. What happens is the warp drops into a bundle and as the pile builds up it binds to the base of the winch plate where the rode comes in and everything stops. This is especially bad when you have all chain. If the locker is deep enough, then it’s not an issue. With bigger boats that’s easy, but not so in a lot of smaller trailer boats. What happens with the drum winch, is all the rode is spooled onto the drum so doesn’t have any drop at all. The drum can be mounted on the base of the anchor locker or the bulkhead and as long as there is a clean and clear line to the bow roller and it is fitted correctly, it is almost impossible to get a bind up. The only way this can happen is if you overfill the drum and the warp and chain spills off the edge or it has not been mounted straight. It is essential to have the right rope and chain guide just in front of the hatch opening. These come in a variety of sizes (mainly 4” & 6”) and help the rope and chain to track out to each side of the drum. The rollers will also help to eliminate any scuffing on the boat as the rope and chain track down from your bowsprit to spool on and off the drum. Plus there are hawse pipes available if you want a clean look on the deck. One of the benefits of a drum winch is they are capable of handling

then think again. There are now some very compact models available that are designed specifically for boats under 5m. Manufacturers have done a lot in recent years to improve not only the way their drum winches operate and their efficiency but also the quality and the compactness. With all the strain that goes on a drum winch, it is essential that all the components are to the highest standard. Drum winches need to be robust and reliable, so it pays to know what you are buying.
Will It Fit?
TASMAN
SERIES
All the drum winches we have in our buyers guide essentially all do the same job; it’s just that some do it differently and better than others. Some offer more features and depending on the model are suitable for different size boats. Combined they offer over 55 models, to cater for boats from under 5m to over 12m. It is into the trailer boat market where the majority of drum winches are sold because of the rope/chain option. When it comes to all chain that’s not really an option on a drum winch. Unlike a capstan winch where the chain simply goes through a chainwheel and is dropped into the locker, with a drum winch all the anchor rode remains on the drum. One issue is the weight of the chain on the drum (40m of 7mm chain = 40kg), which over time could damage not only the drum, but also other componentry such as the bearings. Also, chain doesn’t settle on the drum as uniform as warp, and then there is the question of the amount you would be able to get on the drum. A lot less than conventional rope and a fraction of Dyneema or Spectra. When looking for a drum winch, the first thing to consider is the space you have to mount it. No problem if you are happy with it on deck, but if it’s to go in the anchor locker, you need to consider the overall dimensions. With a new alloy boat, most manufacturers can easily make a few adjustments to fit a drum winch and even if you are retrofitting one to an older boat, it’s often not difficult to modify the bulkhead. In a grp boat this is not so easy, so getting a unit to fit is not so simple. Interestingly some production grp boat manufacturers are addressing the problem and making their anchor lockers ‘drum winch’ friendly. The Savwinch 880SC is designed for the same small boat market and while it carries 60m of warp, it is slightly higher, but with less width. It weighs in at just 16 kg. Stressfree’s Mini Me is capable of handling 65m of warp and size wise falls in between the other two. Lone Star’s GX1 is another compact unit, weighing just 17 kg and the BLA 4500 is even lighter at 16 kg and ideal for boats up to 5.5m. The Maxtek drum winch weighs in at only 12.5 kg. Overall they are similar in dimensions and it’s just that one may fit a little better in the space you have than another.

SAVWINCH
Savwinch is a well-recognised brand of drum anchor winches that are purpose designed and built for the harsh saltwater environment. They offer the world’s first electronic fast fall system, which has no mechanical clutches. The new electronic fast fall (SAV-EFF) variable speed Savwinch range is Australian made and built to the highest standards. This system allows you to drop your anchor as fast as a free fall system and is electronically controlled. Using the same technology as the SAV EFF, the SAV EFF2S offers the boater a 2-speed system. The fast fall system increases the voltage and the speed of the motor, so there are no loads involved. It can drop as fast as you can drop it. But it’s all touch button controlled with your finger. Savwinch offer 13 different models based on five sizes from the 880 suitable for boats to 5.5m, up to the 3000 for boats up to 14m. In 2016 Savwinch released their brand new Signature “Stainless Steel Motor” series. These are 316 stainless steel motors, not just a cover. The SS motors are entirely submersible without the use of sealants or glues. In 2017 Savwinch introduced the world’s first complete 316 stainless steel winch, the SSS range. Like the SS winches, these are fully sealed 316 stainless steel motors but also feature a full 316 stainless steel gearbox. The models are available in different variants and are offered with a 7-year warranty. All units come with either a 12/24 volt fully sealed motor, external gland (no terminals), an oversized high-grade gearbox and corrosion resistant componentry. www.savwinch.com.au ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14

seals. The proven Maxwell 1000W motor is the same as used on the RC Series and VWC/HWC winches. Marine anodised aluminium legs are used to protect against corrosion on alloy hulls. The Tasman Series also uses large diameter plain bearings that offer longer life, are stronger and more robust in the harsh marine environment. Gearbox bearings are lubricated sintered bronze and the non-gearbox end is a self-lubricated composite bearing for minimal maintenance. www.maxwellmarine.com
MAXWELL
Maxwell is well known for its extensive range of capstan winches, so it was only a matter of time before they got into the drum winch market. In 2017 they released the Tasman drum winch series with two models; Tasman 8-8 and the Tasman 8-6. The only difference between the two units is the drum size, with the 8-8 designed to take 8m warp and chain and the 8-6, 6mm warp and chain. While the smaller 8-6 weighs 31 kg, the 8-8 comes in at 37 kg. Both units have a 1000w motor, are available in 12v or 24 volt, have a maximum pulling force of 1000kg and hauling speed (full drum) of 60m/ min. Depending on the model, the Tasman drum series is suitable for 110m to 160m of rode. They all come with a 3 years warranty. Maxwell proprietary gearbox has a custom ratio for optimised performance, direct fit to larger diameter shafts, large bearings and
MAXTEK
Maxtek offers two sizes of compact, 12-volt anchor-well mounted drum style anchor winches; the MTX600 and the MTX900. The MTX600 uses a 600-watt motor and the MTX900 takes a step up to a 900-watt motor. Both drum winches are ideal for shallow or narrow anchor wells. The drum and assembly on these winches are all manufactured from 316-grade stainless steel. Single person operation is achieved with the inclusion of a dual direction solenoid and remotely mounted foot and up/down toggle switch. DRUM WINCHES welded housing bracket closes up the gap between the drum preventing rope jams and the need for additional guards. The Pro Series II 1500 series anchor winch is the most powerful in the Viper range and designed for commercial and large vessel installations of 8m plus. The 1500 has a considerable rope capacity of up to 200mtrs of 6mm double braid or 100mtrs of 8mm triple strand rope spliced to 10mtrs of 8mm short link chain making anchor in deep water a breeze and is powerful enough to haul up a 37lb plough anchor all day. The Viper 1500 has a fall rate of 50m per minute and comes with a lifetime warranty against water intrusion and 5-year Viper warranty. www.kiwiyachting.co.nz
VIPER
Manufactured by Bell Marine in Victoria, Australia, the Viper range of drum winches features the Viper S Series, which incorporate a fully stainless steel gearbox. Their range covers three drum sizes with seven models, from the Micro through to the powerful Pro Series II 1500. Don’t be fooled by the name Micro or by its size, this is one of the world’s most powerful electric drum winch for its size and was designed to fit into bow riders, tinnies, walkarounds and any boat with limited anchor well space. The Micro is constructed from 8mm plate 316 marine grade stainless steel (hand polished to a mirror finish) and the drum rotates at a fall rate of 40mtrs per minute. The Viper Pro Series II features a stainless steel electric motor and has a fall rate of 45 m per minute and a retrieval rate of over 41m per minute. Seven years ago we sent Freddy Foote down to Tauranga to test the Scorpion 610 HT. Back then he said it was a boat that delivered some of the best bang for your buck on the market. Now one of Sportcraft Boats most popular models, we sent him back to rediscover if it is still as great as it was back then. ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14

or a long while, there has always been a segment of the market where there was demand for high-quality aluminium trailer boats - at an affordable price. While this sector was always well serviced, times have changed. Some more well-known name brands have virtually vanished from the market or have evolved to reach a higher price point. Where a gap has been left, organisations such as Sportcraft Boats have swooped and cemented themselves into this part of the market with their Bluefin and Scorpion brands. I’ve always been very impressed by the Sportcraft Boats experience and their approach to manufacturing and marketing of their brands. Sportcraft Boats are principally retailers who manufacturer and are lead by Jamie Black, who heads up the Tauranga branch, with another in Morrinsville. I tested the 610 Hardtop model some years ago and it was a great package. I even caught a fish that day! But the key memory was affordability - so much boat for your money!
The 610 Hardtop is a boat that will suit a wide variety of users. From a boat for a couple of blokes to take out and slay some fish, to a family vessel with a spacious cabin to stow all of the kid’s gear for the day and even enough room for them to take a kip.
User-Friendly Layout
So what’s changed over the years? Well, to the eye, not a lot. According to Jamie Black, there have only been minor refinement changes to the boat over the years. After all, if it isn’t broke why fix it? The layout remains practical, with the right amount of features to get you out on the water, all at a very affordable price. Aft, an adequately sized boarding platform is on either side of the outboard pod, and the port corner has an aluminium boarding ladder fitted. A grab rail has also been welded onto the rear of the transom to help swimmers and divers re-enter the boat. While no walkthrough is fitted, one can be included as an option on either side. Otherwise, you clamber over the transom and into the cockpit.
Sportcraft Boat’s Jamie Black demonstrates the roomy forward cabin.

Two large tote tanks will give a fuel capacity of 90L.
Large cockpit side shelves run both sides of the cockpit.
Our test boat came with two tote tanks, which are located under the transom. No option for an underfloor tank, however, the two 45L tote tanks will give you a 90L capacity and combined with the efficiency of the Mercury 90hp four-stroke outboard will give you plenty of range. The transom has a shelf built into it, ideal for storing any miscellaneous items such as tackle boxes, etc. The battery is below and is hidden away with a vinyl curtain. The cockpit is relatively sizeable, with long deep-carpeted side shelves adorning either side. Two-rod holders each side are situated along the coamings. Above you have a rocket launcher with storage for six rods, which is within easy reach for most. Seating consists of two basic single seats, with storage space underneath. If you want more seating, especially for the kids, king/ queen style seats can also be fitted, as too can a removable aft bin seat.
The small storage shelves on either side of the helm, are a great place for keys and cellphones. For passenger comfort when standing, there is a handrail that runs along the top edge of the dash area. The dash is really neat and tidy, is fully carpeted and on the test boat we had a flush mounted Simrad MFD with Mercury digital engine instruments, a VHF and the switch for the Lewmar anchor winch. Forward in the cabin, there is plentiful storage space available in the cabin sides, in the form of two large side shelves, as well as large storage compartments underneath the squabs. At 1.9m, the bunks are very lengthy, so are long enough to sleep on. Add a privacy curtain, and you have a great little overnighter. Despite having a spacious and lengthy cabin, the 610 still has a lot of fishing room in the cockpit with 2.5m from the dash to the inside of the back transom. The side gunnels are flat and nice and wide which makes it practical for seating and other uses.
There is a sizeable boarding ladder in the port corner.

underneath, they will get you home in reasonable comfort should conditions worsen while you are out. Two of us launched the boat super easily at the Sulphur Point boat ramp in Tauranga, some of the best launching facilities in New Zealand. The 610 was easily handled, but it’s also a boat that is light enough that you could comfortably launch it on your own. On the trailer, the rig weighs in at 1220kg, so beach launching this boat is a real possibility. Towing with a large family sedan or small SUV is easily achievable. As tested, this rig is $54,695 . This includes the 7 inch Simrad combo GPS sounder and the auto Lewmar windlass anchor winch. A standard package starts at $49,995, where it comes with the Mercury 90hp four-stroke outboard, VHF, Fish Finder anchor and warp, trailer, rocket launcher, bait board and the internal carpeting. Incredible value? You bet!
SCORPION 610 HARDTOP
Underway
The driving position is very good and the first thing I noticed was just how far back I was from the windscreen - it makes it feel like a very roomy and spacious boat. The 610 is an easy and fun boat to drive, not requiring too much trim to get it running nicely and would be ideally suited to those who are new to boating. It’s the kind of boat you can learn how to handle very quickly and easily. The 90hp Mercury four-stroke was a good match and powered the 610 hull easily. The Mercury returned 31.0 knots @5500rpm with a pleasant cruise of 23 knots @ 4000rpm using 21.3L/h The 610 Hardtop can be powered by as little as 90hp, of with as much as 125hp. I think the 90hp was an ideal match for the hull. It provided more than enough grunt and will have plenty in reserve should you end up loading the boat with passengers and gear. Our test day conditions were beautiful, with hardly a ripple on the waters around Tauranga. I’ve tested Scorpions of this size before in varying conditions, and they have done well. With a 5mm hull

hasing snapper with lures in NZ is nothing new. Since the first snapper jigs came out in the late seventies, there has been a never-ending progression of lures, lures, and more lures. It was bound to happen with man’s quest to improve and create new and better types and styles in everything, then lures would be no exception. Bait fishing is still active in this country, but as more and more fishers come into contact or observe how effective it is when the correct methods and tackle are used, the interest is growing. Let’s face it, lure fishing has a lot going for it; you don’t have to freeze lures, they are small and don’t take up much room, clean and don’t stink up the boat. Plus because you drift with them, there is no pulling the anchor up and down. And when fished correctly, my god do they catch fish. So why wouldn’t you use them! It’s a no-brainer. Sure you will have to buy a specific rod and reel for the type of lure fishing you choose, but who doesn’t like buying a nice new piece of kit every once in a while and oh man those new lure specific rod and reels are just beautiful to fish with. So let’s have a look at what lures are available, how and where they are fished, what rod and reels should be used and how to rig them?

The Savage Gear Squish Erratic Fall, is available in a wide range of weights and colours.
SOFT BAITS
SLOW JIGS
Soft plastic bait, commonly known as just soft bait, are plastic-based fishing baits, termed so because of their soft, flexible rubber texture. Soft plastics are available in a large range of colours, sizes and particularly shapes. Soft plastics found their origins in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with small worms and grubs being moulded from hard rubber. The stiff rubber used, as well as the basic shapes produced, did not allow the flexible action and effectiveness of modern soft plastics to be observed. In 1972, lure manufacturer Mister Twister patented the Curly Tail concept, utilising the flexibility of silicone-based plastic to create a rubber lure with a more lifelike action and vastly improved fish-catching effectiveness. In the early 2000s the gear needed to make good soft baits started to become available in New Zealand. I am talking about carbon graphite 2.1m (7ft) spin rods, small compact high-end spin reels with superb drag systems, braid line, fluorocarbon leader, a vast range of different weighted jig heads, and of course a huge selection of scented tails. Within months a new fishing system was born and Kiwis took to it with a vengeance. I must admit soft baiting is probably my favourite form of fishing, in water depths up to about 30m and definitely under 20m. It’s so much fun and so effective when fished correctly on the drift. For those of you that haven’t tried this form of fishing, I suggest you borrow a soft bait rig, leave the bait at home and have a go. Just find some fish on the sounder and drift through them, cast your soft bait up ahead of the boat letting it fall to the bottom and keep twitching the lure. If you don’t hook up and the lure drifts too far behind, then wind it in and repeat. If the fish are there, you’ll have a ball and fill your bin. I bet you will be out buying a new soft bait outfit the next day.
Here we move into an entirely different type of lure where soft baits work better in water under 30m, slow jigs are designed for deeper water. These metal lures are designed to just drop off the side of the boat, so a much shorter rod is used. Slow jigs come in a wide range of weights, colours, types and styles to allow for water depth and current strength. The ideal rod is short graphite say 1.5m-1.8m (5/6ft) with a very soft flexible tip and the reel is generally a small quality overhead, loaded with 6.8/9.0 kilo (15-20 lb) braid. The lures themselves are divided into several styles, Lucanus, bottomship, sliders, ingicu, micro, and some of the old chrome jigs from yesteryear. These can be cleaned up and re-rigged with skirts and the new micro hooks and they work just fine. Nice to do a bit of recycling if you still have some of those old school jigs kicking around. Drop this type of lure straight to the bottom then engage the reel and wind very slowly about ten times, if you get a touch but don’t hookup just continue to wind slowly and the fish will generally come straight back and hit the lure hard and hook up. You don’t need to strike with these lures just let the rod, braid and the lure do it all for you. Should a hookup not happen after ten winds then drop the lure to the bottom and start the process over again. Good to do this while drifting. Quite often you will get hit as the lure re-drops to the bottom and with some of the lures, it doesn’t hurt to give them a twitch as you wind. As with soft baits, you should fish with a light to medium drag setting, because you’re usually fishing over flat sand and mud, so if the fish wants to run let it He can’t go anywhere and you get to have a big smile on your face for a bit longer.

SMALL TUNA
Soft baits tend to take medium to large fish.
Every summer as the warm blue water pushes down from the tropics it brings skipjack and albacore tuna within reach. These are just two more species that will readily take small trolled tuna lures, but more importantly, will just as happily chase your cast out soft baits. You will need to use light jig heads, so they don’t sink too quickly. Small metal or chrome casting lures can also be used on your soft bait rod. When albacore is encountered, they might be slightly deeper, so this is where your slow jig combo can come into play. Again using a lighter weight jig for a slower decent drop to about 10m, then retrieve again until you hook up. You will need a full spool of braid with these little guys, as they will take line like you won’t believe Your spool will just be a blur if you do hook one up, but oh god are the great fun. Lure fishing around our northern coasts can produce a wide range of species snapper, kahawai, john dory, gurnard, trevally, mackerel, kingfish, and small tuna. I haven’t included game fishing with lures because that’s a whole different ballgame. If you haven’t tried fishing with lures, then you should. Leave the bait at home one day and give them a try, as long as you follow the simple rules I am sure you will do well and have a great day, a clean boat and a bin full of fish.
KINGIE JIGS
Kingies love lures especially jigs. As a jig tumbles down in amongst them they will watch it with interest, but as soon as the jig is retrieved back to the surface at speed they see a potential meal getting away and that’s too much for them and they pounce. Kingie jigs come in weights from 200gr to about 400gr, they are generally long and are designed to either drop, flutter, or dart about as they descend, to attract the kingfish’s attention. Good colours are orange/gold, purple, bright silver/blue or oily chrome. Although I am sure, there are plenty of other good colours to use. The rod and reel combo for kingie jigging is a little like the slow jig combo but on steroids. A short rod with a powerful action, an immensely strong mid-size overhead reel and colour coded braid line all rated at 24 to 37 kilos. You will need to be as strong as this combo and your fitness levels will need to be up there to take on this form of kingie fishing. Kingies know how to fight and how to fight dirty, so if you nail a good one on a jig, you will have earned it. Another form of chasing kingies is with poppers and stick baits, casting these surface lures and retrieving them at mid to high speeds is a real buzz. Poppers splash across the surface at high speed and stick baits have a swimming action just under the water. It all happens on the surface and if kingies or big kahawai are about it will only take a few casts to get them charging in after these lures and explosive takes are sometimes just meters from the boat. You will need a powerful casting set for this game. The rod is usually 2.4m and rated 24 to 37 kg, matched with a big grunty spin reel with braid to match the rod and reel combo. If you’re like me and like things a bit easier, then trolling for kingfish is a good option. Rapala type bibed minnow lures work well over reef country and can go as deep as 10m, so watch your depth. Also feathered or vinyl tuna lures or even small marlin lures can get kingies excited.
JUST REMEMBER LET THEM RUN AND HAVE SOME FUN.

hen I was last in Nelson to run a couple of DNA Boats, it was a sunny day, with a gentle swell and a warm breeze. This time it was a lot different, with a dull overcast sky, 2m plus swell and rain. But hey you take what you get when you arrive from out of town for a boat review. In this case, it was again a pair of DNA boats, a DNA 630 XHT hardtop and a smaller DNA 480 XC open cuddy. Right from the start, I decided I would start with the hardtop as I could see myself getting

rather wet in the smaller open boat. As it turned out by the time we launched the boats, the rain had turned to a drizzle and it looked like we would have a short weather window before a late afternoon Southerly blew in. Jason Elvines has been building alloy boats since 2006, when he created a boat for himself, sold it, built another one and sold that. Seeing a future in boat building, he started DNA boats in 2008 and since then the brand has gone from a few sales into the local Nelson and

Every boat is customised to suit an owner’s specific needs and no matter what that is, the quality and build process never change. the pontoon hardtop range, which starts with the 570 XHT and extends through to the 680 XHT. The 570 XHT, 590 XHT and the 630 XHT are very similar in many respects to each other, apart from the overall lengths. The 590 XHT is 200mm longer in the cockpit than the 570 XHT but with the cabin and hardtop the same, while the 630 XHT is 600mm longer with the extra length spread between the cockpit and cabin/hardtop areas.

creating a rigid dependable system that is adopted throughout all DNA’s alloy boat range. “CNC profile cut boats bring about fine tolerances and are perfectly symmetrical”, adds Jason. That desire for a perfect balance of stability, soft dry ride and space has led to what Jason refers to as his X-Series alloy pontoon design. He describes the X-Series hull as one of a maximum beam (2.27m) for the length and yet with an underwater profile that does not require extra horsepower to push it through the water. Jason explains; “We did this by adding tapering downturned chines to the hull, allowing us to step the pontoon out further and have the benefit of increasing the internal beam. This also meant the pontoons were slightly lifted so not to cause any drag in the water once planning. He adds, “The tapering chines are better able to deal with spray deflection as they are a nice flowing curve with a more aggressive downturn than just relying on the pontoons alone for
CAD Design
While the DNA 630 XHT is a conventional hardtop, there are some very cool features that help to make it different from its competition. If you are in the market for a 6m alloy hardtop then it’s certainly not an easy choice with so many boats available, so if you are not brand driven, then you have to look at more than just the aesthetics. For DNA that starts with the design. Jason uses CAD which ensures exact precision throughout the build process. For Jason it is not just the hours spent behind the computer, but also practical on water testing. “If I find something I feel could be better, then I can change it easily and produce a visual rendering to make sure I still have the look and practical aspects right”. “ For me, there is no compromise when it comes to producing well balanced soft riding boats, which are the key to the DNA brand”, added Jason. Construction includes an integral hull framing system created by Jason using CNC cut interlocking full depth, full-length frames, ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14

this task. This provides a drier ride, as the spray is thrown further from the boat and in a downward direction. The benefits are in the ride also, as the chines act as a shock absorber, trapping a cushion of air under them as they land”. With the pontoons divided into individual airtight chambers as well as sealed areas under the tread plate floors, the DNA 630 XHT is virtually unsinkable.
Hardtop’s Plus
The 630 XHT is described as a serious fishing diving platform that when configured right can also be used for overnight excursions. It’s big enough fish four comfortably without encroaching into another angler’s space… unless you hook up a Trev or Kahawai. The X series pontoon hulls feature full-flat floors, meaning there are no angular sections of the hull beyond the edge of the floor and pontoon joint. This optimises the fishing space. There are also deep toe spaces where you can hook your feet in underneath the pontoon giving you more positive grip stance

when stand-up fishing. Very fisherman friendly! Kotare, the name of the boat we were using for the review had been fitted out with a load of extras, including plenty of Ultralon U-Deck on the cockpit sole and coamings. Certainly gives the boat a nice look, as well as being soft underfoot, easy to clean and doesn’t get too hot in the blazing sun. The owner, who is new to fishing, wanted a boat that provided everything he would need for serious fishing. While on the port side of the boarding platform there is a two-step fold down dive ladder, the starboard side has a live bait tank fitted. In the centre of the transom is a generous size DNA designed and built removable bait board complete with five-rod holders. It is around the transom area that Jason says most of the customisation is done. The side coamings each have a pair of rod holders, drink bottle holders (which are also great for sinkers, hooks and lures) plus a downrigger mount. Sort of tells me that this owner is serious about his fishing when he adds downriggers to his fishing arsenal.

While there is no cockpit storage under the flat floor, there are wide side trays for rods and assorted gear, plus dry storage under the helm seat. Kotare’s seating was a pair of swivelling buckets with bench seats aft, with storage one side and space for a cooler bin under the other. DNA offers a variety of seating options such as Softrider pedestals to back to backs. Electronics on board were a Simrad 12” MFD, Garmin engine management and a GME VHF. All anchoring can be carried out from the helm via the Maxwell RC6 winch. Kotare’s cabin is set up for day boating, with twin bunks with storage under. With a drop in insert that can be changed to one huge berth if you are looking at overnighting. There is also storage in side trays and the cabin, like the hardtop, is fully lined.
Super Ride
Power options are single outboards, 150-200hp, with Kotare running a Honda 150. Maximum speed inside the harbour was 35.5 knots. I did manage to run across the big swells off the shoreline at around 19-20 knots quite comfortably. The 630 XHT was a pleasure to drive in the following sea and was incredibly soft and dry. I liked the way it tracked where I steered it, with no deviation. The bow shape and hull entry helps provide exceptionally positive control. And did I mention quiet and dry? In the head sea, I had to slow down a bit, but that was to be expected in the swells. Once I sorted out the right trim (reasonably well in) it was a great ride, apart from the occasional large sets of rollers spaced unusually apart, which caught me and gave us a jolt. Overall, however, a super ride for the conditions.
Observations
What I liked about the DNA 630XHT was the practical layout and attention to detail. This is a boat designed and built by a fisherman, who appreciates what fisherman require in a boat. Kotare is the fifth 630 XHT to be built and according to the owner, it has proven an outstanding boat that does everything he wants and performs better than he expected. Plenty of fish have blooded the cockpit and there’s certain to be many more.

MCLAY 561 CROSSXOVER
With a 5mm hull, it’s a very quiet hull and feels stiff.
W
hen McLay Boats first released their trio of CrossXover boats back in 2014, they put a whole new meaning on pontoon boats. Traditionally when you talk about a pontoon boat, you are describing a boat with alloy tubes down either side. However, Steve McLay says different and his range of CrossXover boats are not like any other pontoon boat on the market. The round tubes have been replaced with flat hull panels as you find on any other ‘none pontoon boat’, but with hundreds of litres of closed cell foam under the gunnels from the transom to almost the bow. They may not look in the usual sense of the word like a pontoon boat, but by incorporating the foam buoyancy, they offer the pontoon safety, while retaining the same good looks of a conventional alloy boat. I’m not saying that pontoon boats are not attractive, but they don’t appeal to everyone, although that perception has certainly changed a lot in recent years, with some good looking boats on the market now. What designer Steve McLay was after was a boat that retained all the volume of his “non-pontoon” boats but came with the inherent safety that a pontoon boat offers. Sort of having the best of both mediums and with the CrossXover Series he has certainly achieved that. Since the CrossXover models were released at the 2014 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, I have reviewed two models, the 581 and the 651, both of which I was impressed with, so I was keen to look at the baby of the CrossXover fleet, the 561. The range has grown to five models, with the latest being the 651 CrossXover, a 6.6m hardtop, one of two hardtops in the range. The other three are all cuddy cabins.
River to the Sea
There’s space for a removable isky/chilly bin under the port seat.
Didn’t try the 2 hour walk but Steve McLay tells me it’s worth the time.
We had chosen to do the review and a video on the 561 CrossXover in Steve’s home waters near Milton, or more exactly the Taieri River and then out over the bar to the open sea. In the previous issue of PPB, we ran a review and the McLay 591 XL Sportsman and I mentioned how disappointed I was that the Taieri Bar was flat, flat, flat! However, considering we were only in a 5.75m cuddy this time, I shouldn’t be complaining. Our run in the fresh water of the Taieri River was a change for me ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14

as I do very little river boating and it makes a difference from the open sea. Powered by a Mercury 115 4S, the 561 CrossXover had a top speed of just over 38 knots (44mph). I found the 115 probably overpowered the boat and I would have been more than happy with around 80-90hp, which in the Mercury 4S configuration are the same engine package as the 115, but with less horsepower. We pulled 5500 rpm on the 17” Inertia propeller so although I thought we might have been a little been a little over-propped, but as we were testing in fresh water, that probably accounted for 200 rpm. Max for the engine is 6000 rpm so it was probably about right to get good economy and performance. We cruised along the river, over the flat waveless bar and into the mirror-smooth sea off the coast at around 4500 rpm @ 28.5 knots (33mph) and were burning less than 25 lph. So that’s one tote tank for about 28 nm or around 85 nm with the standard built-in 80-litre fuel tank. It’s a very quiet hull with no apparent ‘tinnie slap’ and feels stiff. Having a 5mm hull (most boats this size are 4mm) certainly helps. One thing about McLay is they don’t skimp when it comes to quality and making sure every boat is built to last. So much so that they offer a five transferable warranty on the hull. Another plus is the extra wide chines which stay wide right through to the bow area and do a great job in forcing the spray and water down low and off the boat. I have an open, tiller steer, McLay 4.8 Fortress and I am always amazed at just how dry the boat is. The chines really do the business, especially when it’s moderate to rough seas. The transom area in all the CrossXover series of boats is very similar, although there are some options available. You can have a full transom from gunnel to gunnel or a cutout step through with a drop in splash guard. The Portofino style stern means you have easy access to both sides of the engine, plus a drop-down ladder on the port side.

Centre of the transom is a large removable bait station complete with tackle drawer, cutting board and four rod holders. Underneath are twin lockers, one for the battery and the other for extra stowage. Because all the space under the 4mm flat cockpit sole (apart from the fuel tank) is taken up with positive buoyancy, there is no underfloor storage available. However, there is wide storage trays either side which can handle plenty of rods and there is room in the cuddy for your dry gear. The cabin is fully lined so there’s no exposed alloy and this adds a nice warm feeling to space. The cuddy cabin area is not big but certainly offers ample space for a couple of adults to sit out of the weather. A large deck hatch makes access to the anchor locker easy, but if you go for the optional Savwinch drum winch, you can do all your anchoring from the helm. The dash of the 561 CrossXover is basic and functional with room to add a lot of extras. Our boat was fitted with a pair of Mercury Smartcraft gauges, GME VHF and a Garmin GPS Map 5. You could fit up to a 9” MFD screen if you want something bigger. I particularly liked the solid alloy handrail that runs across to the passenger area. Strong, solid and gives you a feeling of added security if you’re coming back home in rough water after a day’s fishing. There’s also a lockable glovebox with fold out drink holders ahead of the forward passenger seat and another handrail alongside. Standard seating is swivelling buckets and single rear squabs on alloy seat bases, but other styles are available, from pedestals to king/queens. The test boat didn’t have a rocket launcher or bimini but there is one available. Depending on how fancy you want to go, it can include wakeboard holders, along with eight-rod tubes. If you want extra protection then clears can be run off the screen to the bimini.

While McLay has designed the CrossXover range to be an all-purpose boat, there’s no doubt the vast majority of owners will use them for fishing. For that purpose they are perfect and in the case of 561 CrossXover, I can see 2-3 guys comfortable working in the cockpit. If you are planning on some extra family activities such as towing biscuit and skis or a family day out on the water, then the 561 CrossXover has all the necessary attributes from a cabin for all the gear or seating layouts to suit 4-6 people. Coamings are at a perfect height for fishing and high enough for safety if you have small children aboard. Overall another winner from the every expanding McLay Boats line up and a very interesting take on how a pontoon boat can look.

Anglers’ PLAYGROUND
From giant spawning snapper to big, muscular swordfish, there’s a fish to suit all tastes right on Perth’s doorstep as Al McGlashan discovered.
I
’ v e seen some amazing things throughout a lifetime on and in the water, but I’m still constantly surprised. From encounters with massive sharks, freediving with huge bluefin tuna and even encounters with giant squid, there’s barely a time when I head out on the water that something new doesn’t surprise and delight me. But on a trip to Perth recently, I encountered something entirely new and so surprising that I was initially left speechless – a big call for anyone who knows me. From a distance, it was nothing more than an oily slick on the surface, barely visible to most, but it filled me with anticipation. As we approached, the water turned red. It wasn’t blood, rather a mass of writhing fish packed tightly together. Edging even closer, the fish revealed themselves as a swirling mass of huge snapper. It was an amazing sight to behold as tonnes of large
WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
fish were packed together like sardines. I’ve chased snapper all my life, but never have I witnessed such an amazing sight as the fish swam tightly together to form one large swirling mass that created a vortex on the surface of the water. It was nothing short of mesmerising. Over the years I’d heard occasional rumours about the spawning snapper of Cockburn Sound, just south of Perth. A species that keeps mostly to itself and usually stays close to its food source on the ocean floor, these snapper were said to rise to the surface in their thousands for their annual spawning. I’d always been a bit dubious about these stories, but when Phil Gee, from Compleat Angler in the township of Rockingham, just south of Perth, introduced me to his mate Danny Wimpress, I became intrigued. It turns out Danny is a genuinely passionate angler who is

concerned about the state of his local fishery and has decided to help out where he can. In this particular case, helping out involves a special permit that he has been granted to tag snapper during the closed season. He’s been doing it on a voluntary basis for the past 17 years to aid research so that the fishery can be better managed. SPECTACLE OF NATURE Some time later – and inevitably – the conversation resulted in Phil, Danny and myself finding ourselves on a boat, with rods and cameras in hand. I could hardly believe that within minutes of leaving the ramp I was staring at a true spectacle of nature. Drawn by the urge to spawn, thousands of big, mature snapper enter Cockburn Sound each year. As they are drawn together into ever-tightening circles, they formed a swirling funnel, almost like a slow-moving underwater tornado, that stretches from the seabed to the surface. So great is their power that they actually create a whirlpool as their fins break the surface. Sneaking in closer we flicked a couple of Halco Paddle Prawns into the swirling mass, with an instantaneous response. When you consider that the fish were up to a metre in length – that’s 10 kilos of snapper – the reaction was amazing. We fought the fish quickly and got them into the boat, where Danny immediately went to work tagging, measuring and sexing before sending them on their way. Watching those beautiful big breeders swim away was the greatest feeling. I have bottom-bounced for snapper all my life, but never, in my wildest dreams, did I think I would sight-cast to a school of snapper. Again, and again, as we cast baits and lures into the red and silver

mass, the result was immediate, frenzied hook-ups. It was almost like an industrial process, as we brought the fish in and Danny tagged them and slipped them back in the water. Inevitably, I had an urge to get closer to the action and, as seems to happen on these occasions, resistance was futile …
eastern states when it comes to their snapper fishery. What’s even better is that they appreciate the important role that anglers like Danny play when it comes to tagging snapper under strict permit conditions. It’s a refreshingly sensible attitude and so much better than ridiculous marine park lockouts that, in my opinion, do nothing more than appease politically motivated green groups elsewhere in the country.
DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME … Jumping in with these fish was fraught with danger, especially since we had already lost a few fish to big sharks. Snapper are a major food source for sharks, especially whalers and white sharks. Great whites rate snapper very highly on their menu and shadow the snapper schools, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Swimming really isn’t advisable for the inexperienced in this scenario, but I do have form in these situations and, for me, it was a once in a lifetime chance to film snapper spawning on the surface. When it comes to swimming with sharks, I fully understand and accept the risks. At the end of the day I am entering their world so they can’t be blamed if things go south. My theory, rightly or wrongly, is that when my time is up, it doesn’t matter whether I’m crossing the road or lying under a coconut tree. Having said that, every situation is assessed thoroughly before jumping in. As I swam across that void of open water towards the spiraling school of snapper, I fully admit I was absolutely scared stiff. But before I could even react, a wall of snapper literally materialised in front of me out of the murky green water. It’s a sight I’ll never forget as hundreds upon hundreds of huge, mature snapper swam past. It only lasted for a short while before they vanished back into the depths. Western Australian Fisheries has a very conservative view when it comes to fisheries management. They are by no means perfect, but I have to say that they are miles ahead of the
BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE … Perth’s inshore reefs are not just full of snapper – they also host a wide variety of sportfish from dhufish to huge King George whiting, massive salmon and even gummy sharks. Further offshore, the Rottnest Trench is home to some huge mahi, blue marlin and even swordfish. Perth has so much to offer anglers and boating enthusiasts. It’s a vibrant city where people are still happy to say “G’day”. Couple the friendly attitude with an ideal climate and it’s easy to see why it’s such a great place to visit.
And oh yes the bugs!
Perth and its nearby waters provide incredibly diverse and rich fishing.

However, there’s one local that is anything but welcoming – the samsonfish. Jigging the inshore reefs and wrecks is asking for trouble during the warmer months and if the jigging itself isn’t strenuous enough, when a samsonfish hooks up it gets a whole lot worse. Battling samsons really is like modern-day torture – but anglers love it. Every summer, samsonfish aggregate in massive numbers over WA’s inshore reefs and wrecks. They are aggressive and will eat just about anything offered them – but easily the best technique is jigging. Once the sounder has located fish holding over structures such as reefs, pinnacles and wrecks, it’s a matter of fine-tuning the search for the big samsons and the bait schools that attract them.
Phil Gee, of Compleat Angler Rockingham, loves getting his arms stretched by samsonfish, which turn up in droves during the warmer months.
THE JIG’S UP – OR DOWN … The great thing about jigging is that it is a very simple technique. Basically, you drop the jig to the bottom and then crank it back up. Having said that, though, there is a certain amount of coordination and finesse required to work the rod and wind the handle at speed. All I can say is that practice makes perfect. Selecting the right jig for the job is easy. The depth is the deciding factor and the deeper you fish, the heavier the jig. The only other consideration is current or wind. When these two factors come into play, compensate with a heavier jig to get you down into the strike zone, fast. Cranking the jig flat-stick works well, but by adding a bit of ‘life’ to the process, with occasional and sporadic tugs, you can increase your chances. Sometimes a slower retrieve is in order, so it really pays to experiment and vary your retrieve style to find out what works best on the day. When it comes to working the jig, the key is to keep it in the strike zone for as long as possible. In most cases, you’ll find the fish in the bottom half of the water column, so that’s where you need to concentrate. Work the jig up through the water olumn, then drop it back down as soon as it is out of the strike zone. Multiple coloured braid is ideal for this style of work and makes it much easier to assess how deep the jig is. Even though you may have marked fish deep in the water column, always expect the unexpected. If you detect a bump while free-spooling the jig down, immediately click the reel into gear and bring the jig to life.

Samsons aside, the inshore reefs also hold some of the biggest King George whiting in the country as well as the sensational WA dhufish, both of which have to be some of the best eating fish in the country. Baitfishing is always reliable, but dhufish will also happily eat soft plastics and even jigs. OFFSHORE OPTIONS If that’s not enough to whet your appetite then there is also the Rottnest Trench, which lies due west of Perth out past the beautiful Rottnest Island. A giant crack in the Continental Shelf, it disrupts the currents to create a rich eco system for a wide range of pelagics. Every summer and autumn, big blue marlin turn up as the Leeuwin Current pushes a tongue of warm water down the coast. Peak periods vary according to the fickle-natured currents, but when the water is right the fishing can be impressive, with fish up into the 250kg range. With this in mind, trolling a spread of lures on heavy tackle is the only option. Don’t make the mistake of going light – it can spell disaster. Alternatively, when the billfish are quiet there is also a series of FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) deployed by local gamefishing clubs, which hold some huge mahi. Years ago, I fished with my friends Ash and Emma Vincent and had an absolute blinder hooking into some massive mahi. We began by picking up some live herring inshore and then spent the day moving from FAD to FAD. We caught fish at every single one and, especially in the late afternoon, the fish really kicked into gear. Just about all techniques work, from trolling to casting poppers, even jigging metals and plastics, but bait is best. Cubing up with pilchards and drifting livebaits out is pretty much a sure thing, especially if you’re the first ones to hit the FAD. The best time to fish is in the summer and autumn, when the warm water is pushing down the coast. Last, but by no means least, is the potential of the trench to hold swordfish. The boys from Halco Tackle went out to give it a crack and on their first trip caught a sword. They were fishing in 600m during the day, employing techniques learnt overseas, but it certainly worked a treat, highlighting the potential of Perth and its nearby waters to provide incredibly diverse and rich fishing. There really is so much in offer in the west – so instead of heading to the far north, consider the action that can be had right on Perth’s door step. From huge snapper to mahi, dhufish to samsons and more – it’s all on offer.

The 650 Portofino has undergone a bit of a revamp.
The Blue Water 650 Portofino is one tough looking boat and although it has been around for over 14 years and is one of the most popular boats in the Blue Water Boats range, it has been given a revamp. Barry Thompson checks out what’s changed and why this boat has maintained its popularity for so long. recreational market but also with commercial operators, both in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The 650 hull is used as the basis for a number of different layouts in both the commercial and recreational market and has seen very little change to the running surface since boat number one.
After more than 20 years designing and building boats under the Blue Water Boats name, Paul Colcord has established an enviable reputation for not only the quality of his construction, but also hull design that perform exceptionally well, especially in adverse seas. While my run on Auckland Harbour was only on smooth water, I have had the opportunity in the past to review some of Blue Water Boat’s larger 7m plus models, and I can certainly attest to their blue water handling. Might be something to do with how Paul arrived at the brand name perhaps!
In recent years Blue Water Boats have pulled away somewhat from the recreational market as the shop was busy building custom commercial boats and a run of Coast Guard vessels. However, Paul says that they are now refocused on the leisure market and recently launched a brand new 850 Portofino for a Noumea client and had plans for a number of new models in the future.
The Bluewater Boats range is extensive with stock models from around 5m through to 9m in a variety of styles. They have found a loyal following in not only the

quite used to putting the same style layout in the larger 750. Despite the 650 being about 1m shorter overall, everything has proportioned well and is practical and easy to use. Customising a standard boat is what Blue Water Boats do, so once they had worked out with the owner where everything was to go, it was simply a matter of piecing it all together. Hull construction is 5mm, with 4mm topsides. The cockpit sole is fully welded to the hull and is mostly made up of airtight chambers, apart from a rear wet locker aft of the 250-litre underfloor fuel tank. The previous 650s were more of a basic setup for hardcore fishing and diving, a market that the Blue Water brand has specialised in. Foul Hooked is the first to be given a more upmarket treatment with SeaDek flooring, a fully lined cabin, a compact galley and set up for overnighting. “We have also modified the hardtop styling to give it a softer more swept-up look and get away from that box styling, although we have not gone too far away from the original design”, says Paul. The cabin provides excellent sitting headroom on the U shape squabs. Forward and the starboard side is all storage, with a head under the port squab. Foul Hooked has a sliding door to close of the cabin, so you get full privacy. Although most owners prefer the lockable cabin, you can have the sliding door and solid bulkhead removed and leave the space open. A draw curtain would give you adequate privacy when using the head. At over 2m long, the berths are indeed big enough for overnighting and you have the choice of an infill to turn two into one. There were no storage trays in Foul Hooked but these are available as an option.
When the owner of our test boat, Foul Hooked, approached Paul for a new boat he was adamant that it had to be a crossover layout. He mentioned that this would probably be his last boat, so he wanted to incorporate all the best of his previous boats into one. Tall ask for the builder, but one that Paul accepted quite happily. He wanted a boat that would satisfy his fishing needs and yet one that still offered good overnight accommodation and amenities. This didn’t present an issue to Paul as he was

of three. Overnighting is available with an infill. A plumbed in head is fitted under the squabs.
The Evinrude ETEC 200 proved exceptionally efficient.
The driving position has been set up for the owner and while I found it a bit tight when seated, it was okay. The bolster style seat means you can stand to drive and with the fully adjustable seat base, you can position yourself quite well. Visibility is excellent with wipers keeping the glass screens clear when required. The helm is big enough for a 12” MFD, in our case a Simrad 12”, plus real estate around it for extra electronics, switch for the Lone Star drum winch, instruments etc. Foul Hooked has a Simrad autopilot alongside the MFD and the ETEC ICON Touch Series engine management panel below. This offers a mode control for adjustments to power steering, trim assist and fuel tank levels. It also displays all facets of the engine from water pressure, depth, SOW to water temperatures of seawater, livewell and bait well. There’s a single binnacle control which is cableless through to the engine. A Fusion Bluetooth entertainment system and Garmin VHF are mounted overhead. Being a semi-custom boat, the Blue Water 650 is available with a variety of seating layouts. Foul Hooked has twin BLA bucket seats on large alloy box bases. There are plenty of different choices as to how you configure the bases, with options for straight storage, fridge/freezers and a full galley. Foul Hooked has the under seat galley to port with a two-burner grill, plus sink with hot and cold water. There’s extra storage below as well as an 80-litre water tank. A pull out shower means you can get the saltwater off after a dive or clean up in the morning after an overnight stay. Simple and easy. Paul says that he can do just about anything in this space and with the detachable rear seats you can even further increase the working space of the cockpit when fishing.

The cockpit is all about space, with a number of options available for the sole, such as a cheque-plate floor, full teak, carpet or composite foam decking. Foul Hooked was fitted with SeaDek. Standard features across the transom include a walk through with drop-down gate, live bait tank (not plumbed) and access hatch to the batteries. A bait station can be mounted in the centre and there is a trio of rod holders in either coaming, plus a rocket launcher above. Paul says that he can make the transom anyway a client wants and there have been many variations in the 100s of 650 Portofino he has built over the years. The cockpit can be fitted with a canopy extension from the hardtop or if you want to add some weekender space, a full camper pack is available. This was the first Blue Water that Paul had setup with an Evinrude ETEC and remarked on how simple it was and that he was very pleased with the performance and efficiency of the engine. The ETEC 200hp is a 2.7litre V6 that like all others in the range is available with your choice of side panels. From a standing start, I was very impressed with the acceleration and speed onto the plane and top end. With some playing around with the trim I managed to squeeze 5600 rpm @ 45 knots. As expected on the calm water the 650 Portofino performed flawlessly. In tight, fast turns it hung on and presented minimal heel. The helm response was light and positive with nothing unexpected no matter which way I threw the boat. If you ever need to back the boat up on a fish, then it does that well also. It’s a boat that will suit experienced boaties that are looking for a craft that’s easily manageable and provides the necessary spaces and requirements for fishing, diving, overnighting and maybe some family day trips. Overall a great Kiwi hardtop that does the business. ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #14
